Jadeite artefacts at Maya sites are normally associated with ritual and ceremonial locations, with high-quality jadeite reserved for elite objects. The discovery of a jadeite gouge with a wooden handle at a Classic Maya salt-working site submerged by sea-level rise - Ek Way Nal, Belize - is therefore unexpected and provides new information about the utilitarian use of this stone. The extremely high quality of this jadeite tool is particularly surprising, offering new insight into the Classic Maya exchange systems and the role of salt makers such as those based at Ek Way Nal.

Spatiotemporal Variation Of Benthic Silica Fluxes In The Ngom Shelf, Byron Ebner
Spatiotemporal Variation Of Benthic Silica Fluxes In The Ngom Shelf, Byron Ebner
LSU Master's Theses
Dissolved silica (DSi), plays an important role in regulating primary productivity of silicifying organisms, such as diatoms which precipitate hard parts composed of biogenic silica (bSi) in coastal and shelf ecosystems fed by major rivers. In the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM), loading of nitrogen and phosphorous have increased compared to a decline in DSi in the Mississippi River. Continued decreasing in DSi loading could lead to limited diatom growth and production or shifts in community composition, therefore, it is important understand the role of benthic fluxes in providing silica to the overlying water column as there are few regional …
Effects Of Plant Viruses On Vectors And Non-Vector Herbivores In Three Different Pathosystems, Sunil Paudel
Effects Of Plant Viruses On Vectors And Non-Vector Herbivores In Three Different Pathosystems, Sunil Paudel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Plant viruses are an important component of agro-ecosystems and the knowledge of impacts they can cause on their hosts, and on different vectors and non-vector herbivores associated with the hosts, is very crucial in devising sound management strategies for virus disease and vector control in the landscape. The interactions between these components, however, are difficult to predict and vary according to the system under investigation. In order to understand some of these interrelationships, different sets of experiments were carried out in three different pathosystems to look at the impacts of plant viruses on vector and non-vector herbivores. Firstly, in Sorghum …
"La Llorona": Evolución, Ideología Y Uso En El Mundo Hispano, Raquel Sáenz-Llano
"La Llorona": Evolución, Ideología Y Uso En El Mundo Hispano, Raquel Sáenz-Llano
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis studies the evolution, ideology and use of the myth of La Llorona through time in the Hispanic World. Considering this myth as one of the most known traditional narratives of the American continent, I begin by providing visual, ethnohistorical and ethnographical insights of weeping in Mesoamerica and South America and the specific mention of a weeping woman in some Spanish chronicles to say how western values were stablished in “the new continent” through this legend. I suggest that during the postcolonialism the legend did not tell anymore about a mother that cries and search a place for their …
Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Waterfowl Nesting Ecology In The Bakken Formation Of North Dakota, Cassandra G. Skaggs
Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Waterfowl Nesting Ecology In The Bakken Formation Of North Dakota, Cassandra G. Skaggs
LSU Master's Theses
The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) is one of the most important areas on the continent for grassland-nesting birds. Thirty percent of the PPR overlaps the Bakken shale formation where rapidly accelerating oil and gas development has the potential to impact millions of breeding waterfowl. While oil and gas development has negatively affected other ground-nesting birds such as sagebrush passerines and Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in Wyoming, the potential impact on breeding waterfowl in the PPR is unknown. In addition, the PPR landscape is already heavily fragmented by agriculture, and increasing land conversion and disturbance from petroleum extraction may further …
Campus-Based Sexual Assault: The #Metoo Movement And Students' Understanding Of Issues Around Consent, Genevieve Hampson
Campus-Based Sexual Assault: The #Metoo Movement And Students' Understanding Of Issues Around Consent, Genevieve Hampson
LSU Master's Theses
College students who have experienced sexual assault are at higher risk for negative impacts involving physical and mental heath. In addition, appropriate resources and positive systematic response to disclosure are pivotal in the recovery process of survivors. Empirically relevant research has focused on campus-based sexual assault and interrelationships among variables surrounding students’ attitudes towards explicit sexual consent. This cross-sectional descriptive study of 110 students enrolled in two freshman sociology classes contributes to the emerging body of research regarding the use of social media platforms to raise awareness of sexual assault by examining students’ sociodemographic characteristics, literacy using technology, rape myth …
Assessment And Correction Of Lidar-Derived Dems In The Coastal Marshes Of Louisiana, William M. Lauve
Assessment And Correction Of Lidar-Derived Dems In The Coastal Marshes Of Louisiana, William M. Lauve
LSU Master's Theses
The onset of airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) has resulted in expansive, precise digital elevation models (DEMs). DEMs are essential for modeling complex systems, such as the coastal land margin of Louisiana. They are used for many applications (e.g. tide, storm surge, and ecological modeling) and by diverse groups (e.g. state and federal agencies, NGOs, and academia). However, in a marsh environment, it is difficult for airborne lidar to produce accurate bare-earth measurements and even accurate elevations are rarely verified by ground truth data. The accuracy of lidar in marshes is limited by the sensor’s resolution …

Strategies To Overcome Antagonism Of Quizalofop-P-Ethyl When Applied In Mixture With Other Herbicides, Lucas C. Webster
LSU Master's Theses
A field study was conducted in 2017 and 2018 at the LSU Agricultural Center H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station (RRS) near Crowley, LA. to evaluate the influence of different adjuvants in overcoming the antagonism of quizalofop when mixed with bispyribac in Louisiana rice production. The antagonism of quizalofop mixed with bispyribac plus HCOC at 14 DAIT was overcome with a neutral interaction observed at 28 DAIT for barnyardgrass control with an observed control of 91%, compared with an expected control of 97%. The addition of COC, SNS or HCOC into a mixture of quizalofop plus bispyribac provided synergistic or …
Efficacy Of Aqueous And Gaseous Chlorine Dioxide In Reducing Salmonella, E. Coli O157:H7, And Listeria Monocytogenes On Sweet Potatoes, Strawberries, And Blueberries, Phillip Luu
LSU Master's Theses
Chlorine dioxide, a stronger oxidizing agent, is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. This study evaluated the efficacy of chlorine dioxide on reducing Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes on sweet potato (aqueous ClO₂), strawberries and blueberries (gaseous ClO₂). Sweet potatoes inoculated with multi-strain cocktails of each bacterial pathogen (107 CFU/cm²) were treated with 5 ppm aqueous ClO₂ or water for 10, 20, and 30 minutes. Strawberries and blueberries spot inoculated with multi-strain cocktails of each bacterial pathogen (107 CFU/g) were treated with gaseous ClO₂ sachets (63 mg/l for strawberry and 30 mg/l for blueberry) …

Understanding The Potential Of Immersible Virtual Environment (Ives) For Biophilic Design, Asal Emamjomeh
LSU Master's Theses
Biophilic design, which translates literally to love of life [1], is a new and popular trend in sustainable building design. Architects are applying this style in different building types, from offices to schools to hospitals. Research that assesses mental health and cognitive benefits of biophilic design in interior environment and immersive reality is ongoing. This study intends to determine the capability of immersive virtual environment (IVE) to support building design by comparing the psychological and cognitive responses to natural elements in an interior environment (In-Situ) and IVE. Thirty-five LSU students from undergraduate and graduate levels participated in this …
Self-Healing Composite Of Thermoset Polymer And Programmed Super Contraction Fibers, Guoqiang Li, Harper Meng
Self-Healing Composite Of Thermoset Polymer And Programmed Super Contraction Fibers, Guoqiang Li, Harper Meng
College of Engineering Patents
A composition comprising thermoset polymer, shape memory polymer to facilitate macro scale damage closure, and means for molecular scale healing has the ability to repair structural defects by a bio-mimetic, close-then-heal process. The shape memory polymer serves to bring surfaces of a structural defect into proximity, after which the healing means moves into the defect and provides molecular scale healing. The means for molecular scale healing can be a thermoplastic, such as fibers, particles or spheres, which are heated to or above the thermoplastic's melting point, and then the composition is cooled below that melting temperature. The compositions can not …

Removal Of Eriochrome Black T By Sulfate Radical Generated From Fe-Impregnated Biochar/Persulfate In Fenton-Like Reaction, Jong Hwan Park, Jim J. Wang, Negar Tafti, Ronald D. Delaune
Faculty Publications
A new heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, Fe-impregnated biochar catalyst (Fe-BC) was synthesized and evaluated in detail for its catalytic activity with sulfate radical under various conditions. The optimum conditions for the removal of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) by Fe-BC were determined as 0.27 g/L K2S2O8 (PS) and 0.5 g/L Fe-BC for 0.1 g/L EBT, and which resulted 85–88% removal efficiency within 2 h. The effective oxidation of EBT was observed over a pH range of 2–4 and temperature of 25–45 °C and maintained EBT removal efficiency of 77.6–92.7%. Under optimum conditions, the catalytic activity was faster in the order of PS …
