Understanding Mechanisms For Coastal Marsh Sustainability In A Changing Climate, Ashley R. Booth Nov 2024

Understanding Mechanisms For Coastal Marsh Sustainability In A Changing Climate, Ashley R. Booth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the Chenier Plain of Louisiana and Texas, coastal marshes are subject to high rates of relative sea level rise (RSLR), restricted sedimentation, and declining elevation attributed to subsidence and decades of intensive management. These marshes were created via mineral sedimentation but now largely accrete via organic matter accumulation. This organic matter accumulation (OMA) – or the balance between plant productivity and decomposition – is essential for maintaining elevation and thus long-term sustainability. However, management for elevation is complicated by a poor understanding of how abiotic factors like flooding and salinity impact processes driving OMA and elevation. To better understand …

Just as archivists continue to frame their professional work around …

Development Of Machine Learning-Based Tool For Prediction Of Long-Term Field Performance Of Asphalt Concrete Overlays In A Hot And Humid Climate, Elise Mansour Nov 2024

Development Of Machine Learning-Based Tool For Prediction Of Long-Term Field Performance Of Asphalt Concrete Overlays In A Hot And Humid Climate, Elise Mansour

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The performance of pavement plays a critical role in Maintenance, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (MR&R) for highway agencies. Reliable and accurate estimation of pavement performance can be instrumental in prioritization of the limited resources and funding for highway agencies. The latter requires robust prediction models that can handle large-scale, real-world data and can forecast pavement performance in the long run. Unfortunately, the traditional performance prediction models have raised concerns regarding their efficiency and accuracy. It is because these models were based on a limited number of explanatory variables, were not up-to-date and were designed for forecasting short-term (up to five years) …

Evaluating Growth Of Coastal Grass In Recycled Glass Sand: Evidence For Safe Application In Coastal Restoration, Allison B. Huddleston Nov 2024

Evaluating Growth Of Coastal Grass In Recycled Glass Sand: Evidence For Safe Application In Coastal Restoration, Allison B. Huddleston

Honors Capstones

Louisiana’s coastal land loss results from complex interactions of anthropogenic and naturally occurring processes that impact sediment supply in the Mississippi river delta. Given the coastline's vital role in the state’s economy, Louisiana has made significant investments in coastal restoration projects, including planting native vegetation and adding borrowed sediments. The amount of sediment needed to maintain Louisiana’s existing coastline exceeds the available amount that could be extracted, and state officials have since identified this lack of sustainable sediment resources as a critical limitation for future restoration projects. One proposed solution to address this shortage is using recycled crushed glass cullet …

Objectives: Preschooler physical activity (PA) is vital for growth and development. The World Health Organization PA guidelines state preschoolers should achieve ≥ 180 min/day of Total PA (TPA) of which ≥ 60 min is moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). A step/day recommendation to match these guidelines may be a more practical metric for caregivers to promote PA. The purpose of our investigation is to improve upon existing step recommendations by creating one for indoor-based activities, acknowledging where preschoolers spend most of their time, and various cut-points for PA. Methods: In a laboratory study (Aim 1), a validated direct observation protocol was used …

Coastal wetlands face threats from climate change-induced flooding and biological invasions. Plants respond to these stressors through changes in their phytochemical metabolome, but it is unclear whether stressors affecting one tissue compartment (e.g., leaves) create vulnerabilities in others (e.g., roots) or elicit similar responses across tissues. Additionally, responses to multiple simultaneous stressors remain poorly understood due to the focus on individual metabolites in past studies. This study aims to elucidate how the phytochemical metabolome of three Phragmites australis (Cav.) lineages, common in the Mississippi River Delta, responds to flooding and infestation by the non-native scale insect Nipponaclerda biwakoensis (Kuwana). Among …

Precision Bottlebrush Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Structure-Property Relationship, Nduka D. Ogbonna

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bottlebrush polymers, a type of non-linear polymer characterized by densely grafted side chains on a linear backbone, offer a versatile platform for material design due to their unique thermomechanical and rheological behavior. Addressing the grand challenge of achieving structural precision for bottlebrush polymers remains crucial because traditional disperse mixtures are plagued with batch variability, limiting our ability to control their functions, and correlate theoretical predictions with experiments. To date, narrow-dispersity bottlebrush polymers remain highly heterogeneous, as they are typically synthesized from disperse linear building blocks.

To address this longstanding challenge of structural heterogeneity in brush polymers, the primary objective of …

Learning Problems Related To Stochastic Differential Equations, Jinpu Zhou Nov 2024

Learning Problems Related To Stochastic Differential Equations, Jinpu Zhou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are essential for modeling systems influenced by both deterministic dynamics and random fluctuations, with applications in a wide variety of disciplines. This thesis develops a Bayesian framework for nonparametric learning in SDEs, addressing key challenges in inference, particularly when dealing with complex systems and incomplete data. The thesis begins by establishing a theoretical foundation in optimization over Hilbert spaces, including a generalized representer theorem to address infinite-dimensional optimization problems encountered in nonparametric inference. Building on this, we introduce a Bayesian framework with shrinkage priors to learn drift functions from high-frequency data. Bayesian approach incorporates low-cost sparse …

Deephive: A Reinforcement Learning Approach For Automated Discovery Of Swarm-Based Optimization Policies, Eloghosa Ikponmwoba, Opeoluwa Owoyele

Faculty Publications

We present an approach for designing swarm-based optimizers for the global optimization of expensive black-box functions. In the proposed approach, the problem of finding efficient optimizers is framed as a reinforcement learning problem, where the goal is to find optimization policies that require a few function evaluations to converge to the global optimum. The state of each particle within the swarm is defined as its current position and function value within a design space, and the particles learn to take favorable actions that maximize the reward, which is based on the final value of the objective function. The proposed approach …

Addressing Knowledge Gaps In Disease Epidemiology And Detection Of Fungicide Resistance In Cercospora Leaf Blight Of Soybean, Stephanie Karen Ramos Nov 2024

Addressing Knowledge Gaps In Disease Epidemiology And Detection Of Fungicide Resistance In Cercospora Leaf Blight Of Soybean, Stephanie Karen Ramos

LSU Master's Theses

Cercospora leaf blight (CLB) has been the primary foliar disease impacting the soybean crop in the mid-South for over a decade. A poor understanding of disease epidemiology and the prevalence of fungicide resistance have added complexity to management efforts. Recent findings suggest that airborne conidia play a significant role in the outbreak of CLB. We investigated the relationship between weather variables and conidial release using multi-site, multi-year spore trapping data. The findings confirm that C. cf. flagellaris is the dominant CLB pathogen, contributing significantly more conidia than C. cf. sigesbeckiae and C. kikuchii in soybean fields across Arkansas, Mississippi, …

Determining The Impact Of Lethal Temperature And Relative Humidity When Combined With Various Insecticide Classes Against A Bed Bug (Cimex Lectularius) Population., Bandana Shrestha

LSU Master's Theses

Common bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are obligatory blood-feeding pests that have adapted well to survive in challenging environmental conditions. Known for their high tolerance to dehydration, low water loss, and high critical thermal maximum, they have become difficult to manage. Environmental factors, particularly temperature and humidity, play a significant role in their survival. However, with growing resistance to insecticides, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are now essential for effective bed bug control. A key strategy in IPM involves combining insecticides with heat treatments. This method aims to overcome the limitations of heat treatment alone, as bed bugs may …

Oocyte vitrification, a cryopreservation process, continues to be characterized as an experimental procedure in horses. The goal of this dissertation was to evaluate the viability, developmental competence, and nuclear structures of cryopreserved equine oocytes to illuminate potential areas of improvement in the vitrification process. Oocytes were collected from abattoir derived ovaries and exposed to either varying lengths of in vitro maturation (IVM) or pretreated with a …

Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo Oct 2024

Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo

LSU Master's Theses

Many animals use visual signals to evade predators, forage for food, and communicate with conspecifics. Some animals that shift into and out of breeding stages, such as fish, can modulate their visual sensitivity to better adapt to changing internal and external conditions. Previous work in our lab demonstrated that females of the cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni have improved visual sensitivity when they enter reproductive readiness. However, little is known about how fish and vertebrates more broadly modulate visual sensitivity across their reproductive cycle. We hypothesized that the hormone and neuromodulator gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) could modulate visual sensitivity because GnRH is …

The rice-soybean fields in 2023 and 2024 were both planted with PVL03 …

Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan Oct 2024

Intensification Strategies Of Southern Arizona Bilinguals, Sadie E. Seilhan

LSU Master's Theses

The present thesis explores the intensification strategies employed by bilingual Spanish-English speakers in Southern Arizona, focusing on six distinct devices: lexical, phrasal, repetition, reformulation, hyperbole, and code-switching. While previous research has largely centered on adverbial and lexical intensifiers in monolingual contexts, this study broadens the scope by examining how bilingual speakers leverage their unique linguistic repertoire to amplify their speech. Using a sociopragmatic framework, the analysis reveals a marked preference for lexical intensification, which accounts for more than half of the recorded instances, with phrasal intensification and repetition following closely. Despite its lower frequency, code-switching stands out as a particularly …

Evaluation Of Wood Fibers Derived From Different Tree Species And Processing Methods On Crop Growth And Microbial Activity In Soilless Substrates, Amanda Mizell Oct 2024

Evaluation Of Wood Fibers Derived From Different Tree Species And Processing Methods On Crop Growth And Microbial Activity In Soilless Substrates, Amanda Mizell

LSU Master's Theses

Soilless culture use is expanding as arable land and viable fumigants have decreased in availability. This has subsequently increased the demand for soilless substrates for container crop production. The primary component in most soilless substrates is Sphagnum peat moss, which is considered unsustainable due to the extensive time it takes to produce and the release of large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere during harvesting. Research into viable peat moss amendments to reduce reliance on this relatively non-renewable material has become a necessity. The most promising amendment that has been accepted in the horticulture industry as a viable amendment is …

The Role Of Siamese In G2 Checkpoint Regulation In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Martha A. Schwall Oct 2024

The Role Of Siamese In G2 Checkpoint Regulation In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Martha A. Schwall

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cyclin-cyclin dependent kinase (Cyclin-CDK) pairs regulate progression through the checkpoints of the cell cycle. They bind with some specificity and must be bound to for their regulative properties to be active. The presence of cyclin-CDKs is conserved throughout eukaryotes, while differences in specifics exist between yeast, animals, and plants. In Arabidopsis, SIAMESE (SIM) is a CDK inhibitor that restricts progression through mitosis. Overexpression of SIM is required for endoreplication in Arabidopsis trichomes, and overexpression of SIM results in increased endoreplication in leaf epidermal cells. SIM is expressed at high levels in the root elongation zone, where it plays a …

Stress On The Brain: An Investigation Into The Impact Of Stress On Learning, Memory, And Metamemory Processes, Felicia M. Chaisson Oct 2024

Stress On The Brain: An Investigation Into The Impact Of Stress On Learning, Memory, And Metamemory Processes, Felicia M. Chaisson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While acute anxiety or stress has been shown to enhance certain cognitive functions, such as memory for emotionally salient stimuli, its effects on memory for emotionally neutral information remain ambiguous. Successful memory encoding and retrieval often involve control processes—both self-initiated and directed—that dictate organization during learning. Previous research indicates that these processes facilitate the contextual binding and organization of information. However, multi-domain evidence suggests that stress during encoding may be disrupted due to changes in neural mechanisms at play. This dissertation explores how stress impairs cognitive control, identifies potential underlying neural correlates, and examines broader metacognitive influences. Chapter 1 begins …
