The Role Of Sweet Potato Resistance In The Population Dynamics And Development Of Meloidogyne Incognita., Gary Wright Lawrence

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Root-knot nematode populations endemic to Louisiana soils were identified to species and race. Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood, (MI) accounted for 97 percent of the populations identified. Of the M. incognita species 55 percent were Race 1, 38 percent Race 3, and 7 percent Race 4. Meloidogyne javanica represented 3 percent of the populations studied. Populations were compared to the M. incognita used in the LSU sweet potato breeding program (MIS) for their virulence on the susceptible 'Centennial' and resistant 'Jasper', 'Jewel', and L4-73. The populations varied in virulence to the sweet potato cultivars with some populations being more …

High Temperature Combustion Of Selected Chlorinated Hydrocarbons., David Leslie Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study combining ignition delay measurements and quenched product distributions from shock-tube experiments with chlorinated hydrocarbons has been conducted to develop a better understanding of the combustion characteristics of these compounds which are candidates for incineration. The ignition delay times of selected C(,1), C(,2) and C(,6) chlorinated hydrocarbon- stoichiometric oxygen mixtures have been measured behind reflected shock waves at a pressure of 1.8 atm over the temperature range 1200-1700K. Studies were also conducted with mixtures of chlorinated and nonchlorinated hydrocarbons to examine the effect of chlorine atom/hydrogen atom ratio on ignition delay behavior. The results indicate that contrary to conventional …

The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Retinol-Binding Protein., M. E. Newcomer, T. A. Jones, J. Aqvist, J. Sundelin, U. Eriksson, L. Rask, P. A. Peterson

Faculty Publications

The complex of retinol with its carrier protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP) has been crystallized and its three-dimensional structure determined using X-ray crystallography. Its most striking feature is an eight-stranded up-and-down beta barrel core that completely encapsulates the retinol molecule. The retinol molecule lies along the axis of the barrel with the beta-ionone ring innermost and the tip of the isoprene tail close to the surface.

External Labelling Of Glycoproteins From First-Trimester Human Placental Microvilli, S. J. Fisher, M. S. Leitch, R. A. Laine

Faculty Publications

The brush-border glycoproteins of first-trimester human placentas were investigated by using two external labelling techniques: (1) sequential digestion with neuraminidase and galactose oxidase, followed by reduction with NaB3H4, which 3H-labels terminal galactose and galactosaminase residues; and (2) sequential treatment with periodate and NaB3H4, which 3H-terminal sialic acid residues. The labelling procedures were performed on intact tissue so that the results would more closely approximate the topography of the bursh border in vivo. The microvilli were isolated, subjected to sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, and the [3H]glycoproteins detected by fluorography. Densitometer scans of the fluorograms of the [3H]galactoproteins showed that, under reducing …

Molecular Analysis Of Induced Mutations At The Adh Locus (Alcohol Dehydrogenase, Restriction, Cloning, Southern, Blotting)., Mark Richard Kelley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Presented here are three distinct, but interwoven areas of mutation research and molecular genetics using Drosophila melanogaster as the test organism. The first section describes the characterization of the DNA replication process and DNA repair in the oocyte. This involved sex-linked recessive lethal tests on ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) treated females and unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) studies involving EMS, methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) and N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU). Oocytes were positive for UDS with EMS and MMS in a DNA repair competent strain and negative in excision repair deficient strains. ENU was negative in a DNA repair competent strain. Since UDS is not quantitative …

Progeny Studies And Genotype X Environment Interactions For Yield And Other Characters In Sweet Potatoes, Ipomoea Batatas, L. (Path Analysis, Heritability, Correlations)., Marc J. J Janssens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A multi-environmental trial was conducted in Rwanda, located in the highlands of Central Africa. The trial consisted of 26 cultivars of sweet potatoes repeated over 11 environments. Genotype X environment (G X E) interactions were highly significant for vine yield, fresh root yield, number of roots, and dry matter yield. Average root weight was not significant for G X E interactions. The G X E variance component was generally more important than the variance component for cultivars. From pathway analysis it was concluded that the G X E effects of dry matter yield were little determined by the G X …

Electronic Structure Of Small Iron Clusters., Keeyung Lee Jan 1984

Electronic Structure Of Small Iron Clusters., Keeyung Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The linear combination of Gaussian orbitals (LCGO) method has been adopted in developing a spin-polarized molecular orbital calculation code. The calculations are based on density functional theory using local density approximation for the exchange-correlation potential. A variational fitting method is used to obtain a charge density fit to avoid the need for using four-center integrals in evaluating the Coulomb potential. The matrix elements of the exchange potential are evaluated by direct numerical integration using a doubling grid developed for this purpose. Self-consistent solutions have been obtained using this method for Fe(,9) and Fe(,15) clusters with open boundaries and with body-centered …

A new, highly efficient ultrasonic nebulizer was used for sample introduction and aerosol generation. Extensive evaluations and modifications of commercially available atomic absorption spray chambers and burner heads were conducted. Observations made during these studies centered on some of the fundamental properties of aerosol transport within the atomic absorption nebulization system. The new flame atomic absorption system consisted of the ultrasonic nebulizer incorporated into a modified spray chamber. The aerodynamic properties of the chamber …

An In Vitro Evaluation Of The Effect Of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus On Preimplantation Bovine Embryos., Charles Richard Looney Jan 1984

An In Vitro Evaluation Of The Effect Of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus On Preimplantation Bovine Embryos., Charles Richard Looney

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A total of 402 bovine embryos, non-surgically collected on day 6.5-7.5 after estrus, were utilized in evaluation of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) for estimating embryo viability in vitro and to investigate the effect of Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) Virus on embryonic development during in vitro culture. Fluorescent assessment, using UV microscopy (440-480 nm) of embryos after staining in FDA (2.5 (mu)g/ml phosphate buffered saline: PBS), was found to be a rapid, non-toxic and accurate method for evaluation of viability. Embryos with highest fluorescent scores (Score = 4) prior to culture developed at the highest rate (95.7%), while embryos with no fluorescence …

The Relationship Between Photosynthesis And The Capacity For Nitrogen Fixation In Soybean., Eddie Paul Millhollon Jan 1984

The Relationship Between Photosynthesis And The Capacity For Nitrogen Fixation In Soybean., Eddie Paul Millhollon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diurnal trends in leaf carbohydrate partitioning and nodule activity in soybeans under natural conditions and the irradiance level required to allocate sufficient carbohydrate to obtain maximum rates of N(,2)(C(,2)H(,2)) reduction were studied. Soybeans grown outdoors maintained constant levels of soluble carbohydrates in the leaves and constant rates of N(,2) fixation and root + nodule respiration when root temperature was kept constant but shoot temperature varied. When plants were subjected to a 40-hour dark period, then exposed to 200 to 1000 (mu)E m('-2) sec('-1), 200 (mu)E m('-2) sec('-1) resulted in maximum leaf soluble carbohydrate and nodule activity. Results suggest that nodule …

Life Cycle Of Alaria Marcianae In Louisiana (Trematoda, Transmammary, Milk-Borne)., Wesley Lawrence Shoop

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The life cycle of Alaria marcianae (Trematoda) as found in Louisiana involves the planorbid snail, Helisoma trivolvis, as first intermediate host; tadpoles of Rana catesbiana, R. clamitans, R. utricularia, Hyla cinerea, and Gastrophryne carolinensis as second intermediate hosts; a wide range of amphibian, reptilian, and mammalian paratenic hosts; and the bobcat (Lynx rufus), domestic cat (Felis domesticus), and juvenile raccoon (Procyon lotor) as definitive hosts. Eggs defecated by the definitive host require an incubation period of approximately 20 days; a free swimming miracidium hatches from each egg and must penetrate a snail within 24 hr or die; the miracidium transforms …

The Effects Of Psychotrophic Contamination And The Addition Of Sodium-Citrate On Major Chemical Components And Flavor Of Buttermilk., Wayne Ward Allen Jan 1984

The Effects Of Psychotrophic Contamination And The Addition Of Sodium-Citrate On Major Chemical Components And Flavor Of Buttermilk., Wayne Ward Allen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main objective of this research was to determine what effect, if any, post-pasteurization contamination and/or sodium citrate would have on major chemical components and flavor of buttermilk. Also, it was of interest to establish chemical profiles of "good" versus "bad" buttermilk and to gain information which would aid in the prediction of buttermilk flavor. The research was divided into two parts. In "Part I" buttermilk was artificially inoculated with psychrotrophs (Pseudomonas fluorescens P27) at time of bottling. "Part II" examined the effect of psychrotrophic contamination at time of set with a lactic culture. Treatments consisted of buttermilk, both with …

The Design And Evaluation Of An Integrating Monitoring Device For Ozone Using 10,10'-Dimethyl-9,9'-Biacridylidene., Marion Rene Surgi Jan 1984

The Design And Evaluation Of An Integrating Monitoring Device For Ozone Using 10,10'-Dimethyl-9,9'-Biacridylidene., Marion Rene Surgi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A unique film badge design in which a reagent 10,10'-dimethyl-9,9'-biacridylidene (DBA) is dissolved homogeneously in a gas-permeable, silicone-polycarbonate copolymer film, was evaluated. The ambient concentration of ozone can be determined from its reaction with DBA. The disappearance of DBA upon ozonolysis can be monitored at 4300 (ANGSTROM) without extraction or desorption from the polymer membrane. Unlike other reagents for ozone determination, DBA is specific for ozone. Interferences from nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide are less than 1%. Prior to this experimental work, a mathematical diffusion model was developed to predict the response of such a device to a given pollutant …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Geologic Evolution Of Eastern Terraba Trough, Southwestern Costa Rica (Tectonics, Forearc Basin)., Peter B. Yuan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sedimentary rocks of eastern Terraba Trough, southwestern Costa Rica, were deposited in a fore-arc basin developed at an ocean-ocean convergent boundary. The basin developed in Middle to Late Eocene when the Farallon Plate began its subduction beneath the Caribbean Plate. Shallow-water carbonates of the Brito Formation were deposited on shoals of basement blocks. These were surrounded by deeper-marine areas in which volcaniclastics and carbonate debris accumulated. The Brito Formation consists of algal-foraminiferal packstone to grainstone, rudstone, and rare wackestone formed in force-slope, carbonate buildup, and open platform environments in a warm, tropical sea. The environmental conditions remained unchanged during the …

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins Jan 1984

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Weeds which occur in crop ecosystems may cause suppressive or stimulating effects on arthropod abundance. Yet, little is known about the weed-insect interactions in Louisiana soybean. A three-part study was conducted from 1980-1983 to measure the abundance of arthropods in soybean, Glycine max Merr., as affected by the presence of absence of various weeds. A survey of arthropod abundance was conducted in commercial soybean fields which were either weedy or weed-free in central and south central Louisiana during 1980. Weedy fields had greater abundance of spiders, Geocoris punctipes (Say), and Lebia analis Dejean. Late instar green cloverworm, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner, …

Stewardship Of Creation: Some Implications For Economic Theory And Policy., John Harlan Mcdonald Jan 1984

Stewardship Of Creation: Some Implications For Economic Theory And Policy., John Harlan Mcdonald

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neoclassical economic theory defines an optimal or efficient allocation of natural resources as one which secures the maximum output of preferred goods and services, or as an allocation in which the resources are used in their highest valued uses. The theory is based on two important normative assumptions: the welfare of the community is an increasing function of the individual's welfare, and an individual is better off in a freely chosen position. These assumptions form a subjective theory of value which locates the source of intrinsic value in the individual's tastes and preferences; value or wealth is whatever satisfies the …

Oviposition Of Psorophora Columbiae (Dyar And Knab) In Louisiana Pastureland., Dwight Charles Williams Jan 1984

Oviposition Of Psorophora Columbiae (Dyar And Knab) In Louisiana Pastureland., Dwight Charles Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cattle hoofprint samples from a permanent pasture in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana during 1980 yielded an average of 9.2 eggs and capsules of Psorophora columbiae (Dyar and Knab)/hoofprint. Pasture sections differed significantly (P < .0001) in number of eggs and capsules/hoofprint. Sections ranged from 2.7 to 20.6 eggs and capsules/hoofprint. The number of eggs and capsules collected/date also differed significantly (P < .01), but peaks in numbers did not always correspond with peaks in rainfall or adult mosquito collections. Hoofprint densities and herd movement did not influence egg distribution. Estimates of numbers of eggs and capsules on the 30 ha permanent pasture range from 2,633,621 in late February to 16,913,025 on June 2, 1980. Mosquito oviposition was compared in hoofprint samples taken from a permanent pasture and a fallow rice field in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana during 1981. Hoofprints from the permanent pasture contained significantly (P < .001) more Ps. columbiae eggs than did hoofprints from the fallow rice field, averaging 3.3 and 1.9 eggs/hoofprint respectively. However, estimates of egg density in the 2 sites did not differ significantly (P > .05) since hoofprint density was greater in the fallow rice field. Egg density estimates were 15.2/m('2) for the fallow rice field and 13.3/m('2) for the permanent pasture. Hoofprint depth, hoofprint location, and cattle movement did not influence egg distribution. Results of studies with caged Ps. columbiae exposed to natural lighting conditions indicated that the oviposition cycle was bimodal with the main peak occurring in the 2 h period …

Coastal Louisiana Recent Land Loss And Canal Impacts, William W. Scaife, R. Eugune Turner, Robert Constanza Sep 1983

Coastal Louisiana Recent Land Loss And Canal Impacts, William W. Scaife, R. Eugune Turner, Robert Constanza

Faculty Publications

Annual coastal land loss in the sedimentary deltaic plain of southern Louisiana is 102 km2, which is correlated with man-made canal surface area. The relationships between land loss and canals are both direct and indirect and are modified by the deltaic substrate, distance to the coast, and availability of new sediments. Loss rates are highest in the youngest of the former deltas nearest the coast; they are lowest in the more consolidated sediments far from the coast. The average estimate for land loss at zero canal density in the six regression equations developed was 0.09%±0.13% annually, the present land loss …

Systematics Of The Water Snakes Of The Nerodia Cyclopion Complex, William Edward Sanderson Aug 1983

Systematics Of The Water Snakes Of The Nerodia Cyclopion Complex, William Edward Sanderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The taxonomic status of the green water snake, Nerodia cyclopion, is re-evaluated. The two recognized subspecies are compared by using a variety of standard morphological characters, and significant differences are noted. Discriminant analysis of head-scale measurements provides highly significant separation of the two taxa. Examination of specimens from the zone of parapatry reveals no evidence of recent gene flow between the taxa. Based on these morphological data, plus the biochemical and ecological data of other workers, I suggest that the subspecies be recognized as full species, Nerodia eyelopion and Nerodia floridana.

A Study Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On An Amino Bonded Phase Liquid Chromatographic Column In The Normal And Reversed Phase, Dori Karlesky, Dennis C. Shelly, Isiah M. Warner

Faculty Publications

Experiments were run using an n-propyl amine polar bonded phase (Chromosorb LC-9) liquid chromatographic column in both the normal and reversed phase mode. Results confirm that the mechanism of separation in the normal phase is due mainly to a charge transfer interaction between the lone pair electrons on the stationary phase nitrogen and the π electron cloud of the solute PNAs. Elution order seems to depend upon a combination of π energy, and type of ring condensation of the solute. Plots of log I versus number of aromatic carbons for catacondensed PNAs suggest that while the specific interaction is different …

The Distribution Of Macrobenthos In Barataria Basin, Louisiana, Antonio Liborio Philomena Feb 1983

The Distribution Of Macrobenthos In Barataria Basin, Louisiana, Antonio Liborio Philomena

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Macrobenthos and environmental variables were measured in the Barataria basin, Louisiana, at 32 stations in November 1978. Three of the stations (Lake Salvador, Little Lake and St. Denis Bayou) were sampled bimonthly from November 1977 through November 1978. Abundance, diversity, and biomass results indicated two different areas: fresh, low-salinity habitats in the upper and middle basin with high biomass, abundance, and diversity, and high-salinity habitats in the lower basin with low biomass, abundance, and diversity. Over the whole basin, crustaceans were the most abundant organisms, while the mollusks dominated the biomass. Insects, nematodes, and oligochaetes were characteristic of freshwater habitats, …
