Red crown rot of soybean caused by Calonectria ilicicola is a serious disease in Louisiana. The pathogen infects soybean roots and the above ground symptoms and signs appear during reproductive stages of the plant. Little information is available on root infection as well as effects of environmental factors or varietal resistance on this process. Field studies were conducted in 1994, 1995, and 1996 to determine the effects of planting date, cultivar susceptibility, and soil pathogen population on soybean root colonization by C. ilicicola and subsequent disease development. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease that particularly affects memory with difficulties starting insidiously and gradually progressing. Anterograde amnesia for semantic and episodic types of declarative knowledge becomes the most prominent and disproportionately impaired cognitive symptom. By the middle stages of the disease, this memory loss progresses to severe impairment. The neuropathology of early AD involves the hippocampal complex, which is involved in new learning and storage of recent experiences. The morphological and functional mechanisms involved in the early fertilization events in the freshwater zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Bivalvia:Veneroida:Dreissenidae) are presented. Mature adults release gametes in response to external applications of 5-hydroxytryptamine. Sperm retain a primitive morphology consisting of a head, midpiece and tail The head is approximately 1.6 $\mu$m in diameter and 4 $\mu$m in length. An acrosomal vesicle is highly compartmentalized with a central axial core containing actin. The midpiece is composed of 4 mitochondria and a pair of centrioles. The ADHD Rating Scale-IV is a screening instrument designed to assess attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children. It is comprised of 18 items and has both a home and school version for parents and teachers to complete, respectively. A sample consisting of 178 parent-teacher dyads of children aged 6-12 years of age participated in the study. Psychometric investigation of these scales revealed high internal consistency, adequate test-retest reliability, and appropriate correlations with other measures of ADHD. Principal components factor analysis revealed two factors for both scales: (1) Inattention-hyperactivity and (2) Impulsivity-hyperactivity. This dissertation approaches Anne Hutchinson's trial transcripts (1637-1638), Anne Bradstreet's "To My Dear Children" (1656), and Mary Rowlandson's "The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, together with the Faithfulness of His Promises Displayed; Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mary Rowlandson" (1682) from the perspectives of autobiographical scholarship and feminist theory. It places these writers within a subversive matrilineal autobiographical tradition. It analyzes how seventeenth-century American Puritan women engender the conversion genre, which many scholars have assumed to be gender-neutral. In particular, it considers how Hutchinson, Bradstreet, and Rowlandson negotiate cultural inscriptions of the female body as they …

An association between alcohol and crime has been proposed for over forty years in Criminological Literature. The research conducted in this dissertation uses pooled data on alcohol, neighborhood characteristics, and crime in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The intention of the paper is to further augment our understanding of the alcohol-crime relationship by studying it at the macro-level. Using 278 Baton Rouge block groups as units of analysis, the results of the study confirm that the presence of package-only alcohol outlets have significant effects on assault and robbery within neighborhoods.

The main emphasis of this dissertation is the development of nonlinear control strategies based on biological control systems. Commonly utilized biological control schemes have been studied in order to "reverse engineer" the important concepts for applications in process control. This approach has led to the development of a nonlinear habituating control strategy and nonlinear model reference adaptive control schemes. Habituating control is a controller design strategy for nonlinear systems with more manipulated inputs than controlled outputs. Pathogenic theories of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS) were reviewed and critiqued, and a new theory for the pathogenesis of RLS and PLMS was presented. It was proposed that both disorders are caused by sleep-related hypoperfusion in the area of the cerebral cortex that mediates sensation and movement in the legs. The hypoperfusion was proposed to be caused by high amplitude oscillations in total cerebral blood flow known as B-waves and by flow-reducing turbulence at several of the bifurcations in the anterior cerebral artery. Ten potyvirus isolates from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cv. Beauregard showing russet crack symptoms and three other isolates associated with internal cork and feathery mottle symptoms were obtained from commercial fields in the United States. The biological properties of these isolates and those of a mechanically transmitted virus obtained from I. purpurea were compared with a previously characterized sweet potato feathery mottle virus strain (SPFMV-C) from North Carolina. The symptoms induced in a range of hosts indicated that two of the isolates were associated with russet crack symptoms in the cultivar Jersey; however, none of them could be associated with …

Representative samples of soft, low density, group 1 (rice straw, rice hulls, sugarcane bagasse) and hard, high density, group 2 agricultural by-products (pecan shells) were converted into granular activated carbons (GACs). Prior to pyrolysis, group 1 by-products were mixed with four binders, sugarcane molasses, sugar beet molasses, corn syrup and coal tar. GACs were produced from group 1 and 2 materials by physical activation (carbon dioxide, steam) or from group 2 materials by chemical activation (phosphoric acid). In recent years, there have been a few reports of the relationship between eating disorders in mothers and the psychological adjustment of their children. Most of these reports have been based upon anecdotal case studies, however a wide range of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal complications, including behavioral and feeding difficulties in children of these mothers has been described. This study advanced research in this area by incorporating both normal and depression comparison groups. Despite increasing institutional focus in aquaculture, sustainability remains an amorphous and much debated concept. Little consensus has been identified on the issue beyond the general recognition that the concept should contain environmental, economic, and sociological considerations. This study addressed the specific, relevant question of whether politically diverse aquacuiture interests can collectively develop and agree on production-level goals and indicators of aquaculture sustainability. The research partitioned sustainability into its three subcategories: environmental, economic and social. Dysfunction in homeostatic mechanisms of cell death and proliferation are considered to be important in carcinogenesis. The p53 gene has been implicated in the regulation of cell death and proliferation. The host response was measured through sequential immunohistochemical (IHC) detection of apoptosis, PCNA, and p53 in livers of Fundulus grandis fish exposed to MNNG or to 2-AF, two known carcinogens. Studies performed determined the stability of MNNG in saltwater, the suitability of different fixatives on IHC detection of apoptosis, PCNA-PC10, and p53 (various clones), and frequencies of expression of apoptosis, PCNA, and p53. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, critics of African-American poetry have disagreed vehemently about poetic form. Some, like J. Saunders Redding, for instance, have expressed skepticism about poetry based upon oral forms. Others, like Sterling Brown, have argued that a viable poetics can be developed from black expressive forms. This dissertation analyzes the debate over black poetic form and traces the development of modernist and postmodernist poetics that have been shaped by the specific contours of African-American vernacular culture. This study examined genetic relationships among selected populations of black basses. These centrarchid fishes, separated by both physical barriers (land formations) and distance, have shown varying degrees of differentiation, but retain many morphometric characters in common. Eight populations representing four taxa and geographical extremes in the genus Micropterus, with concentration on the spotted bass complex, were selected and evaluated for biochemical genetic characters. This study examined two species and two subspecies of spotted basses. Dissimulation malingering, unlike simulation malingering, refers to downplaying actual psychological difficulties in order to achieve secondary gain. Although several psychological tests have subscales designed to detect dissimulation, only the Assessment of Dissimulation Scale (ADS) has been specifically designed for this purpose. This screening instrument had limited usefulness, as it was validated only with college students. Spasticity is a common motor disorder in spinal cord injured-patients. Therapeutic agents used to treat the motor abnormalities exist but are often unsatisfactory. Tests of potential pharmacotherapies are routinely conducted in anesthetized intact or acutely spinal animals, conditions which do not accurately simulate the human situation. Functional assessment is a tool in behavior therapy used to identify the functional relationships between a behavior of interest and the individual's environment. A functional assessment identifies variables that both occasion and maintain a particular behavior. Traditional functional assessment methodologies have relied on experimental techniques in which analog sessions are designed to mimic situations in the individual's environment. However, these techniques are time-consuming, require extensive training, and rely on the availability of numerous resources in the individual's setting. Freshly milled raw rice bran was stabilized with microwave heat for 3 min. Half of raw and treated bran were packed in Ziplock(c) bags and the other half vacuum packed. Half of the samples were stored at 4--5°C and the other half at 25°C for 16 weeks. The free fatty acid (FFA) content increased rapidly in raw rice bran samples vacuum packed and samples packed in Ziplock(c) bags store at 25°C from an initial amount of 2.5% to 54.3% and 48.1%, respectively. The biodegradation of the crude oil in a salt marsh was monitored by tracking the decline of the ratio of various components in the crude oil to a stable marker, hopane. In studies of mesocosms, addition of nitrogen as ammonium nitrate resulted in more rapid biodegradation of the oil at 0.10 significance. In field plots, addition of nitrogen was found to not significantly increase the rate of oil degradation over the rate in the control plots. The degradation of the oil is best described by a first order decay equation. The kinetic rate parameter k was 0.0054/day in the control …

The term "liminality" originated in the work of two socioanthropologists, Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner; it is descriptive of the middle phase in a rite of passage. Whereas the "betwixt and between" transitional pattern is temporary in tribal societies, it often becomes a way of life in the twentieth century. Although their projects differ greatly, Victor Turner's and Jacques Derrida's mutual interest in border spaces brings them both into this discussion. Some of the same phenomena described by the sociological term, liminality, is discussed philosophically as "undecidability" and "aporia." Laboratory core studies were conducted to determine sediment oxygen demand (SOD) in petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated salt marshes. Natural degradation processes in salt marshes such as aerobic respiration, nitrification and sulfate reduction were investigated to quantify SOD. Oxygen demand in oiled/fertilized cores was greater than control and fertilized cores due to increased oxygen consumption by oil degradation and oxidation of reduced chemicals; sulfide and ammonium. SOD under non-flooded condition was greater than flooded condition due to an increased area of oxic-anoxic interface during air exposure. This study associated climatic and environmental factors with the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (calazar) in Northeast Brazil. Remote sensing (RS) techniques permitted evaluation of spatial and temporal landscape features to stratify the region and define the target population for this vector-borne disease. The Municipality of Caninde, Ceara, Brazil was divided into 873-- 2 x 2 km2 squares centered on coordinates from a Universal Transverse Mercator projection (scale 1:100,000, 1994) and geo-referenced with 2 Landsat T.M. This study investigated cardiorespiratory, hematological, and psychological responses to acute submaximal exercise, and recovery in end stage renal disease patients. Five African-American males on hemodialysis, were randomly assigned to three exercise treatments (30 minutes on the treadmill at 60% VO$\sb2$ peak): pre dialysis (2 hours before), post dialysis (1 hour after), and off dialysis (24 hours after last dialysis). The McrBC system of Escherichia coli K12 restricts DNA containing modified cytosines within specific sites. The modified cytosines recognized may be 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, N$\sp4$-methylcytosine or 5-methylcytosine. In the mcrBC operon, the mcrB gene is expressed to produce the McrB$\sb{\rm L}$ protein (51 kDa) and the McrB$\sb{\rm S}$ protein (33kDa), which is translated from an inframe internal translation start site and lacks the N-terminal 161 amino acids of the long product. The McrC protein is a 39kDa protein and is required for the cleavage of most methylated substrates. Biochemical and physiological mechanisms of profenofos resistance in laboratory and field populations of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.) were studied. High frequencies of profenofos resistance were recorded in all field-collected strains and were strongly correlated with esterase (EST) activity and moderately correlated with glutathione S-transferase activity. Mean levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) sensitivity to inhibition by chlorpyrifos oxon were lower in some field strains than levels in an insecticide-susceptible strain; however, AChE sensitivity and resistance were poorly correlated in all field strains. There was no correlation between resistance and the activities of P450-monooxygenase or glutathione S-transferase measured. Studies with laboratory-selected …

This research estimated the passive use value of local species biodiversity in the Tensas River basin, a section of the Lower Mississippi River Valley. This research employed the contingent valuation method in eliciting willingness to pay for biodiversity conservation using the habitat needs of an umbrella species as a basis for valuation. This study designed and implemented the Lower Mississippi Valley Plant and Wildlife Survey for primary data collection. The sample included 1,351 households drawn from a hunting permit lottery conducted by the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge and 3,044 households drawn at random from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. A high purity $\gamma$-oryzanol was obtained from crude rice bran oil using a normal phase preparative scale HPLC. It was used in implementing a reverse phase HPLC method for separating each individual component of $\gamma$-oryzanol present in rice bran oil. Ten fractions were isolated in the reverse phase HPLC method. The ten components of $\gamma$-oryzanol were identified. Three of these, cycloartenyl ferulate, 24-methylene cycloartanyl ferulate, and campesteryl ferulate, were major components of $\gamma$-oryzanol. The yield of $\gamma$-oryzanol without saponification was significantly higher than that with saponification in solvent extraction. Edwardsiella ictaluri, causative agent of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), is the primary bacterial pathogen of commercially produced channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The purpose of this study was to make progress towards development of a successful ESC vaccine by generating and characterizing a pool of E. ictaluri antigens and determining if they were protective against ESC in catfish. Antigenic protein expression was evaluated in E. ictaluri cells under different conditions of growth using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and western blotting with pooled convalescent catfish serum (CCS).
