Habitat Influences On Nongame Bird Nest Success In A Managed And Fragmented Southern Pine Forest., Michael Darren Baker

We confirmed the breeding-season presence of 52 bird species and assessed the reproductive quality of a fragmented southern pine forest managed for natural resource extraction on Barksdale Air Force Base in northwest Louisiana, USA. We also conducted point counts to assess relative abundance, richness, and diversity among four habitat discontinuity types (timber harvests, pipeline corridors, access roads, and natural gas wells). Each parameter was greater on study plots adjacent to gas wells than on those adjacent to roads. We determined the fate of 817 nests of 42 species between 1996 and 1998 and determined Mayfield daily nest success (MDNS) for …

Aboveground biomass allocation and its effect on various aspects of N and P dynamics were investigated in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) stands planted at different spacings. Further, the relationship of nutrient demand and root production was investigated to validate the functional balance hypothesis in forest stands. N mineralization was greater in loblolly pine stands than slash pine, corresponding with greater needle litter N concentration. Both N and P mineralization increased in loblolly pine stands with increasing stand density, the result of greater nutrient input through increased litterfall. There were no species differences in …

A series of amphipathic peptides rich in alpha,alpha-disubstituted amino acids (alphaalphaAA's) was synthesized and studied for antimicrobial activity and helix preferences in various solvent systems. In addition, a constrained lactam dipeptide amino acid was synthesized and incorporated into a peptide to examine beta-sheet dimer formation. Several short, amphipathic, 310- and alpha-helical peptides containing 80% alphaalphaAA's were synthesized using various combinations of 1-aminocyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid, alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, and 4-aminopiperidine-4-carboxylic acid. The peptides showed direct antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. In addition, several of the peptides showed in vivo and in vitro activity against Brucella abortus and Mycobacterium chelonei. Studies …

Case studies, developed with criteria from Yin's Case Study Research: Design and Methods (1994), probed single mental constructs of four introductory college biology students who were recent high school graduates. Data sources included autobiographical essays, interviews, coconstructed concept maps (Wandersee & Abrams, 1993), a videotape questionnaire, and graphics. A multisensory microscopy experiment provided the setting for the construction of shared meanings by the participants. Concept maps were used then to explore the existing cognitive framework of the participants. Infant low birthweight rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is higher compared to the nation. Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in Louisiana. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study of 14 students in a metropolitan public school in the Deep South was to find out, during a period of three months, what these kindergarten-aged children knew about birds, whether this knowledge represented current scientific thought, if such science instruction meaningfully affected their prior knowledge, and if so, what the factors during instruction that seemed to influence their understanding of the concept of bird were. Ongoing debate about the evolutionary history of the Amazonian avifauna suffers from a shortage of data. Especially needed are thorough geographic sampling, sensitive markers of genetic diversity, and historical data in the form of explicit phylogenies. I examined patterns of geographic variation in three widespread species complexes of nearly identical Amazonian flycatchers in the genus Hemitriccus, based on spectrographic analysis of vocalizations and phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences (1026 base pairs of cytochrome b from 44 individuals) from throughout Amazonia. This dissertation examined the molecular systematics and historical biogeography of tree shrews (Tupaiidae). Comparison of cytochrome b sequences and DNA hybridization data suggests that cytochrome b sequences evolved 7.9 to 13.4 times faster than single-copy nuclear DNA. These two data sets are taxonomically congruent. They indicate that the Mindanao tupaiid Urogale everetti is a member of Tupaia, and that there is lineage-based variation in rates of evolution among the tupaiids. A new species of Tupaia from Sarawak (Malaysia), T. stuebingi, was described using morphological, ecological, and cytochrome b sequence data. Floral ontogeny in representatives of Malvaceae was compared using scanning electron microscopy. Many aspects of floral development have been resolved by this research, including the presence of a petal-stamen ring meristem in malvaceous taxa. There are several ontogenetic pathways to the formation of this ring meristem; in addition, common petal-stamen mounds are usually present during some stage of development. Stamen proliferation is achieved by partitioning of the ring meristem and furcation of common stamen primordia. This research entails the synthesis of derivatized disaccharides, mass spectrometry studies for structural elucidation of the synthetic disaccharides and molecular modeling of the native and derivatized disaccharides. Peralkylated (methyl to pentyl), peresterifed and tert-butyl-dimethyl silylated linkage isomeric glucose-glucose disaccharides were synthesized to eventually be used in mass spectrometry studies. In this dissertation, mass spectrometry was used to examine anomeric pair discrimination of two sets of peralkylated (methyl to pentyl) disaccharides (maltose/cellobiose and isomaltose/gentiobiose). Successful transgenic plant production is largely dependent on the use of suitable promoters. In this study, we described isolation of rice ubiquitin genes, and demonstrated the potential utility of the rice ubiquitin promoters in plant transformation systems. Two polyubiquitin genes (RUBQ1 and RUBQ2) and two ubiquitin extension/fusion genes (RUBQ3 and RUBQ4) have been isolated from a rice genomic BAC library. DNA sequence data revealed that both RUBQ1 and RUBQ2 contained an open reading frame encoding a hexameric precursor ubiquitin and an intron immediate upstream of the initiation codon. Rice fields are an important source of the greenhouse gases methane (CH 4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). In this dissertation study, experiments were conducted at three levels---in soil suspensions, in soil cores, and under actual field conditions, to investigate the impact of soil redox potential on CH4 and N2O emissions to the atmosphere. Methane and N2O emissions occurred at distinctively different redox conditions in the homogenous soil suspensions. No significant amounts of CH4 was produced when the soil redox potentials were above -150 mV. The delay in early height growth (EHG) known as the "grass stage" has been one important factor that limits the artificial regeneration of longleaf pine (Pinus palstris Mill.). Genetic improvement of the "grass stage" by interspecific hybridization between longleaf pine and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm) followed by recurrent backcrosses aiming at the introgression of genes controlling the EHG from slash pine into longleaf pine may be a solution. The ecology of fishes and macroinvertebrates inhabiting shallow seagrass beds was studied at Bahia La Graciosa, located in Amatique Bay in the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. The study area included extensive turtle grass, Thalassia testudinum, meadows over muddy substrate, whereas a more exposed shoreline also supported turtle grass meadows over sandy substrates outside the bay. A total of 166 samples were collected across two seasons and habitat types in three sampling trips to the area with a cylindrical drop sampler. This study investigates the patterns of cophylogeny documented between pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) and their ectoparasitic chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae). The first two chapters investigate the mechanisms that reinforce cospeciation in this system. Chapter one examines whether mammalian hair diameter is a resource tracked by chewing lice, and thus reinforces the patterns of cospeciation. I found that hair diameter of pocket gophers is correlated with gopher body size and the body size of the ectoparasitic chewing lice. Hair diameter also is correlated with size of the rostral groove, which chewing lice use to grasp hair shafts of pocket gophers. In …

By all accounts, the peoples of the Northwest Coast of North America did not cultivate plants at the time of European contact. This dissertation provides an interdisciplinary assessment of evidence to the contrary, and presents a critique of the literature from which this orthodoxy has been derived. As a primary line of evidence, this thesis describes estuarine gardens found on this coast during the contact period. Northwest Coast peoples created gardens of Pacific silverweed (Potentilla anserina ssp. pacifica), springbank clover (Trifolium wormskjoldii) and other plants with edible, starchy roots within estuarine plots. The genus Brucella is composed of Gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogens that impact man and animals. Brucella species express a 25 kDa major outer membrane protein termed Omp25. To determine the role of Omp25 in virulence, mutants were created in Brucella abortus (BA25), Brucella melitensis (BM25), and Brucella ovis (BO25) that contain disruptions in the omp25 gene (Deltaomp25 mutants). In the murine brucellosis model, each Deltaomp25 mutant was attenuated when compared to the virulent parental strain. The successful formation and characterization of 1,6-diisocyanohexane (DICH) molecules self assembled onto Au and Pt is realized in this dissertation. Exposure of Au substrates to methanolic solutions of DICH can result in the formation of either a monolayer or polymeric multilayer of DICH. Cyclic voltammograms of solution-phase redox probes at poly(DICH)-coated electrode surfaces (both Au and Pt) exhibit behavior that demonstrates that the poly(DICH) layers are effective transport barriers. I studied the breeding activity, productivity and nesting success of the Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) during a 3-year period 1997--1999, and also analyzed preliminary data from 1995 and 1996. I studied the Parrots in six nesting areas located in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. Data were collected on breeding areas characteristics, nest site characteristics, reproductive activity, productivity, and nesting success. Most of the historical breeding range reported in the literature was searched for nests. Significant resistance to malathion and resmethrin was found in insecticide-treated field populations of adult Culex quinquefasciatus , Say, compared with a laboratory and non-treated field strain. Resistance to both insecticides varied during the active control season and was associated with the frequency of insecticide application. Geographic variations in resistance levels were noted, and significant differences occurred between separate populations within the same mosquito control districts. Four model substrates were assessed for their suitability in detecting elevated esterase activity associated with malathion resistance. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the processes that control litterfall and nutrient dynamics in two contrasting mangrove ecosystems at the Southeastern (SE) Everglades and Terminos Lagoon. The main objectives were: (a) to determine the spatial and temporal variability of litterfall dynamics, (b) to evaluate the relative importance of nutrient use efficiency as a nutrient conservation mechanism along a natural nutrient gradient, and (c) to assess the relative importance of nutrient resorption on litterfall dynamics. The research presented in this dissertation involves the comparison and characterization of polymeric and monomeric amino acid based surfactants for the enantiomeric separation of chiral compounds. Comparison of the performance of these two kinds of surfactants in EKC suggest that polymers are better chiral pseudostationary phases (CPSP) than the monomers for enantiomeric separation of neutral and cationic analytes, at least for the examined in this dissertation. However, the anionic enantiomers of 1,1'-binaphthyl-2-2 '-dihydrogen phosphate (BNP) were better separated using monomeric CPSPs.
