Fundamental Properties Of Borate-Modified Oriented Strandboard Manufactured From Southern Wood Species, Sunyoung Lee
Fundamental Properties Of Borate-Modified Oriented Strandboard Manufactured From Southern Wood Species, Sunyoung Lee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the United States, damages to buildings from termites and decay fungi cost billions of dollars annually. As a result, there is an urgent need for building construction that will withstand the ravages of these biological pathogens. Chemical modification of building products is one of the techniques for developing durable wood-based construction. This study was conducted to examine the effects of powder zinc borate (ZB) and calcium borate (CB) on resin gel time, strength, swelling, leaching, termite, decay, and mold resistance properties of oriented strandboard (OSB). It was found that gel time of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin decreased with increased …
Massively Parallel Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Crack-Front Dynamics And Morphology In Amorphous Nanostructured Silica, Cindy Lynn Rountree
Massively Parallel Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Crack-Front Dynamics And Morphology In Amorphous Nanostructured Silica, Cindy Lynn Rountree
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Atomistic aspects of dynamic fracture in amorphous and nanostructured silica are herein studied via Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, ranging from a million to 113 million atom system. The MD simulations were performed on massivelly parallel computers using highly efficient multi-resolution algorithms. Crack propagation in these systems is accompanied by nucleation and growth of nanometer scale cavities up to 20 nm ahead of the crack front. Cavities coalesce and merge with the advancing crack to cause mechanical failure. Recent AFM studies in silica glasses confirm this scenario of fracture [1]. The morphology of the fracture surfaces is studied by calculating the …

Developing Landscape-Scaled Habitat Selection Functions For Forest Wildlife From Landsat Data: Judging Black Bear Habitat Quality In Louisiana, Robert Owen Wagner
Developing Landscape-Scaled Habitat Selection Functions For Forest Wildlife From Landsat Data: Judging Black Bear Habitat Quality In Louisiana, Robert Owen Wagner
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding habitat needs of animal populations is critical for their effective management. In recent years, technological advances have increased the range of methods available to examine habitat selection patterns. However, available habitat data are often either limited to small geographic areas or are of coarse resolution, resulting in a gap in data to model habitat selection at landscape scales. I explored a method of processing Landsat data, the at-satellite reflectance tasseled cap, to address this data gap using black bears in south central Louisiana as a case study. As I showed, this case was particularly instructive because these bears occupy …

The McMurdo Dry Valleys is the largest of the ice-free areas in Antarctica. Precipitation events in excess of 1 cm of snow accumulation are rare. During the winter, snow is transported by strong katabatic winds blowing from the polar plateau, and deposited into the lee of topographic features (e.g., stream channels and other topographic depressions). At the start of the austral summer (early October), as much as 10% of the valley soils may be covered by distributed snow patches. Because liquid water is the primary driver of biological, physical, and chemical processes in this polar desert, quantifying fluxes of water …

The Marshland Upwelling System (MUS) is an alternative method for coastal dwellers to treat their wastewater. Past studies have dealt with the removal of fecal pathogens from wastewater. However the objectives of this research were to: 1) evaluate the treatment capability of the MUS under high hydraulic loadings and cool temperatures with respect to CBOD5, TKN, TAN, NO2--N, NO3--N, TP, and PO4-P, and 2) determine the ideal flowrate and injection frequency to achieve satisfactory nitrogen removal without hydraulic failure. The artificial wastewater study was performed to evaluate the treatment of …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Deterioration Rates Of Textiles And Their Role In Determining Postmortem Interval, Kellie Marie Gordon
A Comparative Analysis Of The Deterioration Rates Of Textiles And Their Role In Determining Postmortem Interval, Kellie Marie Gordon
LSU Master's Theses
A predominant problem that must be solved in the medico-legal field of forensic science is when death occurred. Accurate determination of postmortem interval (PMI) enables investigators to narrow the time frame of events for a case, a crucial step for law enforcement in forensic analysis. Multiple taphonomic variables affect the decay rate of the human body and the subsequent formation of PMI estimates. Employing a two-phased strategy, this study seeks to analyze the correlation between the deterioration rates of various fabric types in relation to determining the PMI of a forensic case. First, an analysis was completed based on a …

Reducing Phosphorus Runoff Using Poultry Litter Derived From Phytase-Amended Diets, Anserd Julius Foster
LSU Master's Theses
Surface-applied poultry litter generated using a phytase-amended diet may release less phosphorus (P) to runoff water than does litter from a conventional diet. The release of soluble reactive (SRP) and total dissolved P (TDP) from litter generated under conventional and phytase-amended diets was examined in three studies: 1) batch desorption, 2) flow-through cell, and 3) field micro-plot. In Study 1, samples of litter (10 from conventional, C, and 20 from phytase-amended, A, diets) were extracted with water at litter: water ratios from 1:5 to 1:200. Phosphorus in A litter was significantly less at the 1:10 extraction ratio; however, there was …

A Screening Assessment Of Solidification/Stabilization For Storm Water Residuals, Erin Ezell Krielow
LSU Master's Theses
Metal species infused particulate matter associated with urban rainfall-runoff is a unique and profuse source of pollution. Generated from urban activities, such as traffic activity and vehicular/infrastructure abrasion, contaminated residual material is deposited to roadways during dry weather and transported to surrounding environments and/or best management practice (BMP) treatment facilities during wet-weather events. These particulates range in size from 1 ƒÝm to 10000 ƒÝm and are contaminated with metal species that originate from such sources as vehicular body wear (Cu), tire wear (Zn), and brake dust (Pb). Depending on the efficiencies of the BMP treatment facilities, these containment systems have …
Biomechanical Effects Of Cyclic Loading On The Lower Back, Lakiesha Claude
Biomechanical Effects Of Cyclic Loading On The Lower Back, Lakiesha Claude
LSU Master's Theses
More than 30 million people in the United States may have low back pain at any time, and 10 million of them have chronic symptoms. Epidemiological studies indicate that along with axial compressive loads, other factors including repetitive twisting or lateral bending and lifting are significant risk factors for low-back disorders. Literature repeatedly confirms that cyclic occupational functions expose workers to a 10-fold increase in episodes of low back injury and pain. This study examined the biomechanical effects of cyclical loading on the lower back. Twenty in vivo feline preparations were subjected to passive cyclic loading at 20 N (n=6), …

It is important to be able to predict the potential spread of water borne diseases when building dams or redirecting rivers. This study was designed to test whether the use of a growing degree day (GDD) climate model and remotely sensed data (RS) within a geographic information system (GIS), could be used to predict both the distribution and severity of Schistosoma haematobium. Growing degree days are defined as the number of degrees centigrade over the minimum temperature required for development. The base temperature and the number of GDD required to complete one generation varies for each species. A monthly climate …
A Role For Constitutive Pathogen Resistance5 In Promoting Cell Expansion In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Ginger Marie Brininstool
A Role For Constitutive Pathogen Resistance5 In Promoting Cell Expansion In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Ginger Marie Brininstool
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Arabidopsis thaliana is a model organism used for genetic, molecular, and biochemical analyses of higher plant processes. Leaf hairs (trichomes) on the surface of Arabidopsis leaves are macroscopic single cells that develop by elaborate cell expansion and differentiation of the epidermis. Arabidopsis trichomes provide an excellent model to study plant cell expansion and differentiation and the cell cycle. Upon maturation, an Arabidopsis trichome becomes a branched, stellate structure with a highly birefringent cell wall. Arabidopsis mutants have been isolated that have trichomes that look glassy and have reduced birefringence. CONSTITUTIVE PATHOGEN RESISTANCE5 (CPR5) is a previously isolated Arabidopsis gene observed …

Treatment Of Mixtures Of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (Mek) And Toluene Using Continuous And Sequencing Batch Operated Biofilters, Jorge C. Atoche
LSU Master's Theses
During the past decade, biofiltration has increasingly been applied as an air pollution control technology to minimize or eliminate emissions of volatile organic compounds from industrial sources. Although of the ability of this technology to maintain high removal efficiency during relatively steady conditions has been well established for many waste streams, a limitation of this technology has been its inability to maintain high removal efficiency during transient loading conditions typical of industrial operations. In the research described herein, a conventional continuous-flow biofilter (CFB) and a sequencing batch biofilter (SBB) were operated for more than 295 days to treat a model …
"You Stupid, Lazy Kid": Perceptions Of Verbal Aggressiveness In Older Adults, Jon M. Croghan
"You Stupid, Lazy Kid": Perceptions Of Verbal Aggressiveness In Older Adults, Jon M. Croghan
LSU Master's Theses
Young adults' stereotypes of older adults has been well-documented in communication literature, however, there has been a lack of research on the impact of message strategy on intergenerational interactions. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among three factors that previous research suggests should influence the activation of stereotypes toward a target: age, relational level, and message strategy. This study examines the role that message strategy, in this case, verbal aggressiveness, plays in activating young adults' (n = 186) negative stereotypes of older adults. The young adults' self-reported levels of trait verbal aggressiveness was positively correlated with …

Estimation Of Waterfowl Food Abundance In Coastal Freshwater Marshes Of Louisiana And Texas, Christian Jesse Winslow
Estimation Of Waterfowl Food Abundance In Coastal Freshwater Marshes Of Louisiana And Texas, Christian Jesse Winslow
LSU Master's Theses
Food abundance might limit survival or recruitment of wintering waterfowl. Nutritional requirements of wintering waterfowl have been estimated, but there are insufficient data on the abundance of seeds and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) to determine if enough habitat exists to support target populations of waterfowl throughout winter. I estimated waterfowl food abundance at 14 coastal freshwater marsh sites in Texas and Louisiana from August 2001 to March 2003, and tested the hypothesis that wintering waterfowl reduce food abundance. I analyzed 210 and 360 seed and SAV samples, respectively, taken during September 2001, February 2002, September 2002, and February 2003 to …
Resistant Rice Starch Development, Siow Ying Tan
Resistant Rice Starch Development, Siow Ying Tan
LSU Master's Theses
This study showed that enzyme treatments were effective in producing resistant starch from rice flour and starch. Rice starch produced higher resistant starch yields than rice flour. The lower resistant starch yields in rice flour could be attributed to the presence of lipids and proteins which were competitively binding to amylose, resulting in decreased recrystallization of amylose. The gelatinization type and incubation periods were not as influential as enzyme treatments in the resistant starch formation. The rapid visco amylograph (RVA) analysis indicated that the gelatinized samples have minimal pasting characteristics since they had been gelatinized prior to enzyme treatments. Pasting …
