The Effects Of Single Versus Multiple Levels Of Feedback Sensitivity Upon Learned Control Of Skin Temperature., Alfred Ellis Buxton Jan 1982

The Effects Of Single Versus Multiple Levels Of Feedback Sensitivity Upon Learned Control Of Skin Temperature., Alfred Ellis Buxton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relationship between single and multiple levels of augmented feedback received during training of bidirectional finger temperature control. Twenty-five male and twenty-five female undergraduate students were randomly assigned, balanced for sex, to one of five training groups. Three groups received a single level of feedback sensitivity (none, low, high) and two groups received multiple levels of feedback sensitivity within the same training trial (high-low and low-high). Finger temperature feedback was provided in the form of visual analogue feedback. All subjects received two one-hour training sessions. Each session consisted of a skin temperature decrease trial followed by a …

Differential Effects Of Marriage Depending Upon Sex For Students In Professional Programs., Patricia Cawunder Jan 1982

Differential Effects Of Marriage Depending Upon Sex For Students In Professional Programs., Patricia Cawunder

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The major hypothesis of this study was that the married state conveys a performance benefit to the male student and is a detriment to the female student. Differential effects of marriage by sex were hypothesized to be related to traditional sex-role concepts such that married female students receive less spouse support and have more role conflict than the male. The hypotheses were tested with law students and veterinary medical students. Performance was measured with GPA, and measures of spouse support and role conflict were developed from weightings of judges for items in a structured telephone interview. Different results were obtained …

Reducing Shoplifting Incidents Through The Use Of Signs., Jeffrey Allan Gottlieb Jan 1982

Reducing Shoplifting Incidents Through The Use Of Signs., Jeffrey Allan Gottlieb

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study consisted of three experiments designed to reduce the shoplifting rate of targeted merchandise in retail establishments without adversely affecting sales. In the first two experiments, attempts were made to replicate earlier findings suggesting that identifying frequently stolen merchandise would reduce its theft rate. In addition, signs were posted in locations where shoppers contemplated or carried out the act of shoplifting in order to achieve generalized reductions in shoplifting. Neither the signs identifying frequently stolen merchandise nor the signs identifying locations used by shoplifters had a consistent impact on any of the target merchandise. The third experiment was designed …

A Study Of The Three-Level Hierarchy Of Information Processing In Reading Comprehension With Respect To Cognitive Demand., Lane Roy Gauthier Jan 1982

A Study Of The Three-Level Hierarchy Of Information Processing In Reading Comprehension With Respect To Cognitive Demand., Lane Roy Gauthier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to study the three-level hierarchy of information processing with respect to cognitive demand. The study addressed the problem of differences between the most commonly used levels of comprehension, literal, inferential, and critical. The main types of information processing models, bottom-up, top-down, and interactive-compensatory, all accept the premise that literal processing is less cognitively demanding than inferential processing, and that inferential processing is less cognitively demanding than critical processing. In order to test whether statistically significant differences actually existed in these three levels of comprehension, fifty students were chosen and individually tested. Twenty-five fifth graders, and twenty-five …

Development Of Louisiana Public School Guidance Services, 1942-1972., Alice Hunter Chilton Jan 1982

Development Of Louisiana Public School Guidance Services, 1942-1972., Alice Hunter Chilton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine how guidance services developed in the public schools of Louisiana between 1942 and 1972. In order to understand the events of these years, it was necessary to examine the period preceding them. In the beginning of the guidance movement, social workers pioneered in assisting youth with problems associated with industrialization. Louisiana was unique in that its guidance program started within the school system. An experimental program began in the Orleans Parish Schools in 1921. It was considered effective and continued. In the 1920s vocational guidance was offered for the first time at …

Standardization Of The Dreger Dyadic Family Interacting Scale., Somsri Reem Kongprasirtpong Khalid Jan 1982

Standardization Of The Dreger Dyadic Family Interacting Scale., Somsri Reem Kongprasirtpong Khalid

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Triads consisting of father, mother, and an offspring from 122 intact families responded to the Dreger Dyadic Family Interaction Scale (DDFIS) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. The sample was made up of mostly white, middle-class, non-clinic families. Two offspring age-groups were included, 12-14 and 18-21. Factor analysis on the DDFIS yielded ten factors. Analyses of variance comparing subgroups within the samples indicated many findings consistent with existing literature or in the expected direction. There were also unexpected findings. Another two independent groups of college students were asked to rate the wholesomeness and the social desirability of the DDFIS items. …

Toward A Classification Of General Systems Theory Concepts: The Categorization Of Vocabulary Components And Their Usage Patterns In The Literature., Stephanie S. Robbins Jan 1982

Toward A Classification Of General Systems Theory Concepts: The Categorization Of Vocabulary Components And Their Usage Patterns In The Literature., Stephanie S. Robbins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The achievement of the goals of General Systems Theory are, in part, dependent on the development and use of a language which will facilitate relevant communication across disciplines so that structural similarities which are hidden by the use of specialists' languages can be examined. This study explores various dimensions of the language associated with GST. The major vocabulary components associated with GST were identified using four criterion. The first was designed to enumerate terms that reflected the dimensional aspects of systems terminology needed to identify systems characteristics which are isomorphic across different disciplines. The second criterion eliminated discipline-bound terms with …

Year By Year Comparisons Of Factor Scores On The Children's Behavioral Classification Project Instrument., Kim Elizabeth Vangeffen Jan 1982

Year By Year Comparisons Of Factor Scores On The Children's Behavioral Classification Project Instrument., Kim Elizabeth Vangeffen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A considerable body of research has been developed in the area of children's problems and their classification. Nevertheless, none of the systems which have been studied have gained widespread acceptance. One of the biggest problems with previous research in this area has been the lack of data tying problem dimensions to age or developmental level. The purpose of the present research was the examination of year by year differences in 25 dimensions of children's behavior. Subjects consisted of 281 school children between the ages of 5 and 14. The Children's Behavioral Classification Project Instrument was administered to the parent or …

The Relationship Of The School Principal's Leader Behavior To Teacher Morale., Marietta Welch James Jan 1982

The Relationship Of The School Principal's Leader Behavior To Teacher Morale., Marietta Welch James

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between morale of Louisiana public elementary school teachers and their principal's leader behavior. The study was designed to test the following major hypotheses: (1) There is no significant relationship between elementary school teachers' perceptions of the principal's leader behavior and teacher morale. (2) There is no significant difference in the relationship in the mean morale score of teachers perceiving their principals as above the mean on the total leader behavior score and those perceiving their principals as below the mean on the total leader behavior score. (3) There is no …

Psychophysiological Concomitants Of Levels Of Cognitive Processing., Ronald Alan Cohen Jan 1982

Psychophysiological Concomitants Of Levels Of Cognitive Processing., Ronald Alan Cohen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The peripheral electrophysiological manifestations of levels of cognitive processing and memory performance were investigated by recording heart rate, skin conductance, skin temperature and electromyogram measures during a three phase verbal task. Subjects processed words at three cognitive levels (phonetic, low semantic, high semantic), and physiological recordings were made during cue covert processing and verbalization phases. Three colored lights were used to cue subjects to the appropriate processing level for each word. An incidental memory task was given following the processing tasks. As expected, words processed at the higher cognitive levels were recalled better. There was greater physiological reactivity associated with …

Self-Talk And Exposure In The Reduction Of Avoidance In Aquaphobic Children., Johanna Wolfson Jan 1982

Self-Talk And Exposure In The Reduction Of Avoidance In Aquaphobic Children., Johanna Wolfson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Efficacy of verbal self-regulation and in vivo exposure, as compared to placebo treatments, was tested in reduction of water avoidance in aquaphobic children. Forty-seven aquaphobic subjects were assigned to one of five conditions: (1) Self-talk with imaginal exposure (ST); (2) Self-talk with in vivo exposure (ST/E); (3) Attention Control with imaginal exposure (AC); (4) Attention Control with in vivo exposure (AC/E); (5) No Treatment Control (NTC). Children in the ST/E and AC/E groups demonstrated the greatest gains in reduction of avoidance, while those in the ST and ST/E groups showed greater gains in swim proficiency. As compared to the NTC, …

Rural Community Influentials: Participation In Local Voluntary Organizations., Jusoh Nordin B Muhamad Jan 1982

Rural Community Influentials: Participation In Local Voluntary Organizations., Jusoh Nordin B Muhamad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the variables or types of variables that are possible predictors of organizational participation. Three categories of independent variables--ecological, situational, and individualistic variables are investigated. The sample consists of 442 rural community influentials from twelve counties in six southern states. Both the Spearman's test of correlation as well as multiple regression analysis are employed to assess the relationships among the independent and dependent variables. The zero-order correlations show that ecological variables (population size, percent white, and urbanization) and situational variables (organization availability and organization diversity) are generally highly correlated with organizational participation (p < 0.001). On the other hand, individualistic variables (occupation, education, age, and length of residence) are generally not significantly related to organizational participation, particularly in membership in influential organizations. The multiple regression analysis reveals that the three categories of variables account for about 20 percent of the variance in membership in influential organizations, and about 15 percent of the variance in the general measures of participation (simple memberships in any set of organizations, attendance at meetings and holding offices). Situational variables are found to have the most influence on membership in influential organizations, whereas population size (an ecological variable) is found to have the most influence on participation as indicated by the general measures of participation. Situational variables account for about 13.5 percent of the variance in membership in influential organizations, although the percentage of explained variance in the general measures of participation is less than 2 percent. Ecological variables, on the other hand, account for about 9 percent of the variance in organizational participation. One of the important tasks of the study is to examine whether organizational participation is related to community influence. Although there is some evidence that participation is associated with influence, the amount of variance explained by organizational participation is rather weak (less than 9 percent). Overall, the study suggests that structural variables (ecological and situational variables) are more important predictors of participation than individualistic variables. Hence, any explanation of the phenomenon of participation will be incomplete if structural factors are ignored.

Level of accurate empathy of 19 paraprofessional telephone crisis counselors was examined following participation in either an apprenticeship or didactic-experiential training program. The apprenticeship program consisted of 32 hours of on-the-job experience supervised by an experienced volunteer counselor and 28 hours of training provided by crisis center staff members. The didactic-experiential program consisted of 60 hours of preservice training provided by the center's staff. Prior to training, participants in both groups were administered the Short Dogmatism Scale and the Adult Self Expression Scale, a measure of assertiveness, as well as questionnaires to assess demographic variables, knowledge of crisis theory and …

A Study Of Moral Development Of Selected Employees In Certain Public Accounting Firms., Guy L. Tull Jr Jan 1982

A Study Of Moral Development Of Selected Employees In Certain Public Accounting Firms., Guy L. Tull Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Little empirical research exists in the area of measuring morality and moral development of business, business people, and business-related professions such as accounting and law. While these professions have Codes of Professional Conduct that state that members must be of high moral character, mechanisms for empirically measuring moral character have, until recently, been non-existent. Through the pioneering research by Lawrence Kohlberg, a moral development testing instrument is now available. The purpose of this study was to measure the level of moral development of auditors in three national ("Big-Eight") accounting firms, utilizing Kohlberg's stage theory of moral development. Eighteen subjects were …

The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy Jan 1981

The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

From "Queen Yseult," 1857, to "Hertha" of Songs before Sunrise, 1871, three archetypes--the femme fatale, the Terrible Mother, and the androgyne--dominate Swinburne's poems, dramas, and novels. These archetypes project the dominant artistic conflict of the Victorian period, the controversy over the function of art and the role of the artist, for they symbolize the psychological and cultural conflict between the doctrine of art for art's sake and its antithesis, art for morality's sake. The femme fatale becomes a symbol of art and beauty, the goal of the artist-androgyne's aesthetic quest. Her masochistic lover strives to possess beauty in the form …

The Social Environments Of Nursing Homes And Their Consequences For The Styles Of Participation Of Older Residents., Susan Mclaughlin Cole Jan 1981

The Social Environments Of Nursing Homes And Their Consequences For The Styles Of Participation Of Older Residents., Susan Mclaughlin Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This exploratory, descriptive study of the social environments of two nursing homes and of the styles of participation that old residents develop has been guided by the symbolic interactionist premise that people act toward things on the basis of the meanings these things have for them. Participant observation was the primary data gathering technique, but two survey type instruments were also used. The goals of the study were to make contributions to (1) the building of grounded, substantive theory in social gerontology; (2) improving data gathering techniques appropriate for studies of old people; and (3) solving practical problems in nursing …

Program compliance was assessed and the utility of predictor instruments was studied. The treatment program lasted 12 weeks with seven follow-up meetings over a nine month period. The Eating Habits condition was designed to modify maladaptive eating habits using behavioral techniques. The Exercise condition consisted of establishing exercise programs for individual subjects. Contingency contracting …

Task Accomplishment Ability Of Children In Small Groups., Nancy Larson Gennuso Jan 1981

Task Accomplishment Ability Of Children In Small Groups., Nancy Larson Gennuso

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was the investigation and analysis of the behavior of small groups of children in a task accomplishment situation. The secondary purpose was to ascertain the effects of a group discussion generated by questions adapted from creative problem solving techniques. A review of literature revealed a lack of research on small groups of children in these areas. Thirty-six small groups of fourth and fifth grade children worked in groups of four on two construction-type tasks, one for pretest and one for posttest. Eighteen of the groups served as experimental groups and participated in the group …

The Effects Of Noise, Provocation, And Level Of Self-Awareness On Physical Aggression., John Fontan Knipmeyer Jan 1981

The Effects Of Noise, Provocation, And Level Of Self-Awareness On Physical Aggression., John Fontan Knipmeyer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cognitive-labeling hypothesis states that the arousal properties of noise will increase aggression only if a person has been provoked and labels the arousal as anger. The arousal hypothesis states that noise-induced arousal may directly increase aggression. It is suggested that discrepant findings are due to differences in subjects' level of self-awareness when participating in sedate versus physical measures of aggression. Male subjects engaged in physical aggression by throwing balls at a confederate within a 2 x 2 x 2 design comprised of provocation versus no provocation, noise versus no noise, and low versus high self-awareness. The ball-throwing was videotaped …

The Effects Of A Non-Competitive Awards Program On The Motivation Of 4-H Members., Norma Jean Roberts Jan 1981

The Effects Of A Non-Competitive Awards Program On The Motivation Of 4-H Members., Norma Jean Roberts

The problem investigated in this study was to test the effect of a non-competitive awards program on the motivation of 4-H members. The objectives of the study were to compare the results of the non-competitive awards program with those of a competitive awards program in four major areas. These were: (1) Completion of project records. (2) Project knowledge and skills acquired. (3) Plans to reenroll in 4-H. (4) Development of a more positive attitude about 4-H experience. Data on project record completion were compared according to grade in school, years in 4-H, sex, race, and place of residence to determine …

Age Differences In Memory For Movement: Effects Of Strategy And Preselection When Ecological Validity Is Varied., Katherine T. Thomas Jan 1981

Age Differences In Memory For Movement: Effects Of Strategy And Preselection When Ecological Validity Is Varied., Katherine T. Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As children mature through the childhood years, motor performance increases in a relatively linear way. This increase in performance is frequently attributed to physical growth factors such as increased height, weight and strength. However, cognitive factors in memory also develop and affect the planning and control of movement. The purpose of these three experiments was to evaluate the developmental increase in strategy use for planning movements and to determine if the motor performance of younger children could be enhanced by inducing strategy use that does not occur spontaneously. The effects of subject selected (preselected) or experimenter selected (constrained) movements was …

Cognitive Predictors Of Success Of Graduate Nurses On State Board Test Pool Examinations And After Two Years Employment., Mary Brown Neiheisel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main purposes of this study were to determine the relationships between cognitive predictors and the success of graduate nurses on the State Board Test Pool Examinations and between cognitive predictors and the success of the nurse after two of years employment. Data were obtained and recorded on appropriate sheets for the first hypothesis and from a mailed questionnaire for the second hypothesis. The population for the first group was the members of five graduating classes of a state university, and data for the second group was from 37.7 percent of the members of one graduating class. Statistical analyses of …

Decision-Making Formats: A Comparison On An Evaluative Task Of Interacting Groups, Consensus Groups, The Nominal Group Technique, And The Delphi Technique., Robert Charles Erffmeyer Jan 1981

Decision-Making Formats: A Comparison On An Evaluative Task Of Interacting Groups, Consensus Groups, The Nominal Group Technique, And The Delphi Technique., Robert Charles Erffmeyer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Using Steiner's (1972) model of group process and productivity, four decision-making formats: the interacting method, the consensus method, the nominal group technique, and the Delphi technique, were compared on two dimensions of an effective decision, quality and acceptance. A literature review indicated that a comparison of the effectiveness of the decision-making formats is difficult because of the prevalence of idiosyncratic modifications made to the formats. To preserve the integrity of the findings of the present study, no modifications were made in the intervention techniques. A total of 144 male undergraduate students, working in four-person, ad hoc groups solved the NASA …

Anthropocentrism: Construct Validity And Measurement., Edward W. Chandler Jan 1981

Anthropocentrism: Construct Validity And Measurement., Edward W. Chandler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The values, attitudes, and beliefs which humans hold regarding mankind's role in the universe must be understood if the natural environment is to be preserved. In this study, the utility of the construct "anthropocentrism" as an organizing principle for understanding consistencies among individuals' attitudes regarding man's role in nature was explored. Anthropocentrism was defined as a doctrine which posits humanity as the center of the universe and sees the well being of mankind as the ultimate purpose of things. The various attitudinal manifestations and historical roots of anthropocentrism were explored, and the sparse empirical literature relevant to this construct was …

A Comparison Of The Early Social Behavior Of Twins And Singletons., Randall Louis Lemoine Jan 1981

This study was a comprehensive descriptive comparison of the early social behavior of twins and singletons in a playgroup situation. Eight pairs of same-sex female twins and 16 age-matched female singleton children, ages 17 to 43 months, participated as subjects. Playgroups composed of one pair of twins and two same-age unfamiliar singletons met for two free play sessions with their mothers present. A wide range of observational measures were recorded using a behavior categorization system. Twin-singleton comparisons were made between the four younger playgroups (mean age two years) and four older playgroups (mean age three years). Twins and singletons were …

Vestibular Responsiveness In Normal- And In Impaired-Hearing Children., Nancy Mixon Hillman Jan 1981

Vestibular Responsiveness In Normal- And In Impaired-Hearing Children., Nancy Mixon Hillman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Vestibular responsiveness of 90 normal- and of 31 impaired-hearing children from 4 through 16 years of age was investigated using a modified Barany-chair test to provide horizontal angular acceleratory stimuli to the semi-circular canals and a parallel swing to provide alternating horizontal linear acceleratory stimuli to the otolithic end organs. Children's eye movements behind a sleep mask in response to vestibulo-ocular reflexes initiated by the angular and linear accelerations were recorded via electronystagmography and telemetry. Mean frequency, amplitude, and slow phase velocity of primary postrotatory nystagmus and presence or absence and latency of secondary per- and postrotatory nystagmus were obtained …

Homosexualities: A Study Of Types., D'Lane Sally Miller Jan 1981

Homosexualities: A Study Of Types., D'Lane Sally Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

With 102 male homosexual and 12 male heterosexual Ss, this study explored the possibility that a typology of homosexuality could be developed using an expanded definition of homosexuality. Proposed dimensions were the variables: gender identity, social sex role, sexual orientation, overt sexual behaviors, current psychological status, and parent-child relations. Ss were recruited by a variety of methods and demographic characteristics suggest a fairly heterogeneous sample was obtained. Scores obtained from a battery of six tests were factor analyzed using an oblique (promax) rotation. Eight factors were obtained and factor pattern scores were used in two hierarchical cluster analysis methods (Johnson, …
