The F Street Mess: How Southern Senators Rewrote The Kansas-Nebraska Act, Randall M. Miller
The F Street Mess: How Southern Senators Rewrote The Kansas-Nebraska Act, Randall M. Miller
Civil War Book Review
In her first book, Alice Elizabeth Malavasic argues that four southern senators who made up the F Street mess from 1853 to 1856 constituted the “most powerful bloc in the U.S. Senate.” (p. 8) During the 1850s, as self-proclaimed heirs of John C. Calhoun’s constitutional ideas and proslavery strategy, these senators used their positions as chairmen of critical senatorial committees to push slavery’s interests vigorously. In Malavasic’s accounting, the friendship and group dynamic of the four Democratic messmates – David Rice Atchison of Missouri, Andrew P. Butler of South Carolina, Robert M.T. Hunter of Virginia, and James M. Mason of …

The Hidden Light Of Northern Fires, Meg Groeling
Civil War Book Review
Daren Wang is not the first author to write a Civil War novel, but he is one of the few to get a review in these august pages. Hidden Light is his first novel, but Wang has written for The Atlantic Journal-Constitution, Paste, and Five Points magazine. Additionally, he is the founding executive director of the Decatur Book Festival. Such an active mind was imprinted with an interest in history at an early age when he and his family actually moved to Town Line, New York.
Borders Of Engagement: Rethinking Scholarship, Activism, And The Academy, Bryan J. Mccann
Borders Of Engagement: Rethinking Scholarship, Activism, And The Academy, Bryan J. Mccann
Faculty Publications
The rhetorical norms around scholarly engagement presume that scholars participate in activist work outside their professional spaces. The avatar of the activist-scholar is the energetic graduate student who fulfills their academic responsibilities while also pursuing activist interests in the “community.” This chapter argues the presumption that activist rhetoricians and other scholars must traverse the border between academy and community reifies the border between the engaged scholar and academia itself. Rhetorical studies, and higher education generally, have always to some degree been invested in traversing the campus-community border. Rhetorical studies, both its communication and composition manifestations, came of age alongside the …
The Role Of Talker Familiarity In Auditory Distraction, Brittan A. Barker, Emily M. Elliott
The Role Of Talker Familiarity In Auditory Distraction, Brittan A. Barker, Emily M. Elliott
Faculty Publications
The current research employed a classic irrelevant sound effect paradigm and investigated the talker-specific content of the irrelevant speech. Specifically, we aimed to determine if the participants' familiarity with the irrelevant speech's talker affected the magnitude of the irrelevant sound effect. Experiment 1 was an exploration of talker familiarity established in a natural listening environment (i.e., a university classroom) in which we manipulated the participants' relationships with the talker. In Experiment 2, we manipulated the participants' familiarity with the talker via 4 days of controlled exposure to the target talker's audio recordings. For both Experiments 1 and 2, a robust …

What We Know About Team Dynamics For Long-Distance Space Missions: A Systematic Review Of Analog Research, Suzanne T. Bell, Shanique G. Brown, Tyree Mitchell
Faculty Publications
Background: To anticipate the dynamics of future long-distance space exploration mission (LDSEM) teams, research is conducted in analog environments (e.g., Antarctic expeditions, space chamber simulations), or environments that share key contextual features of LDSEM such as isolation and confinement. We conducted a systematic review of research conducted on teams in LDSEM-analog environments to identify which factors have been examined with quantitative research, and to summarize what the studies reveal about team dynamics in LDSEM-analog environments. Methods: We used a comprehensive search strategy to identify research on teams that lived and worked together. Data on team dynamics were extracted where possible, …

The food-burying behavior has been reported in many mammals and birds, but was rarely observed in invertebrates. The red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is an invasive pest in many areas of the world that usually performing food-burying during the foraging processes. However, the impacted factors and measureable patterns of this behavior is largely unknown. In the present study, food-burying vs food-transport behaviors of Solenopsis invicta were observed under laboratory and field conditions. When starved (no food was provided for 37 days) in the laboratory, food (sausage) was consumed by large numbers of ants, and few burying behaviors were …

Faculty Publications
Using a resilience framework, the current cross-sectional study examined indicators of behavioral health risk and resilience among U.S. international students (N=322) across key sociodemographic characteristics. A multimethod approach was used to collect data with both an online platform and paper-based survey instrument. Results showed that higher levels of acculturative stress were reported by older students, females, undergraduates, students who lived with their families, and those who had resided in the US longer than 2 years. Findings underscore the importance of culturally relevant screening and prevention strategies that target resilience and other protective factors to reduce health risk and encourage well-being …
Crossing The Deadlines: Civil War Prisons Reconsidered, Angela M. Riotto
Crossing The Deadlines: Civil War Prisons Reconsidered, Angela M. Riotto
Civil War Book Review
In the volume’s foreword, John T. Hubbell, professor emeritus at Kent State University, succinctly summarized the historiography of Civil War prisons, remarking, “It seems that prisons and prisoners have been…a part of the narrative, yet somehow strangely apart from it.” Seeking to remedy this disconnect, Michael P. Gray, author of The Business of Captivity: Elmira and its Civil War Prisons (2001), tasked eight scholars to “reconsider” Civil War prisons and prisoners of war (POWs) and scholars’ interpretations of the topic. The result, Crossing the Deadlines: Civil War Prisons Reconsidered, is an enlightening essay collection that highlights the latest methodologies …

A Poetics Of Temperance: Gender, Genre, And Meaning-Making In Early Modern England, Cristina Maria Rosell
A Poetics Of Temperance: Gender, Genre, And Meaning-Making In Early Modern England, Cristina Maria Rosell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For several hundred years, the scholarly discussion of temperance was dominated by the legacy of classical models. This dissertation, titled A Poetics of Temperance: Gender, Genre, and Meaning-Making in Early Modern England, develops said discussion in a new way by forging a language about ethics and aesthetics into a poetics of temperance. The term poiesis derives from Greek and signifies “to make, create, produce” (OED). Accordingly, Aristotle uses the Greek poietes, “from which our word ‘poet’ derives,” to denote a “maker” (Murray xxxii). In brief, this project understands the role of women in emergent genres as …

Understanding Fear Of Zika: Personal, Interpersonal, And Media Influences, Chun Yang, James Price Dillard, Ruobing Li
Faculty Publications
Fear of infectious disease often motivates people to protect themselves. But, it can also produce negative bio-social-psychological effects whose severity is on par with those of the disease. The WHO declaration of Zika as a world health crisis presented an opportunity to study factors that bring about fear. Beginning nine days after the WHO announcement, data were gathered from women aged 18–35 living in the southern United States (N = 719). Respondents reported experiencing fear of Zika at levels akin to those reported following other significant crises/disasters (e.g., the terrorist attacks of 9/11). Fear increased as a function of (1) …

Perceived Risks And Enjoyment Of Access-Based Consumption: Identifying Barriers And Motivations To Fashion Renting, Chunmin Lang
Faculty Publications
Access-based consumption, a growing trend in today’s society, provides the consumer with an opportunity to have access to new and diverse products without the burden of ownership. As one form of access-based consumption in the fashion industry, fashion renting still lacks development and popularity. The purpose of this study is to identify how perceived risks and frugal shopping affect the attitudes, perceived enjoyment and further behavioral intention toward the adoption of fashion renting. An online survey was conducted with 452 participants in the United States. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results confirmed the negative …
