Evaluation Of Cotton, Gossypium Hirsutum L., Genotypes For Resistance To The Reniform Nematode, Rotylenchulus Reniformis Linford And Oliveira., John Palmer Beasley Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., is a valuable cash crop in Louisiana that is grown primarily for its fiber. The reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira, is a major pest of cotton in Louisiana, where it was first identified in 1941 and has now been found in 39 of 64 parishes. Nematicides and crop rotation are conventional methods of reniform nematode control, but resistant cultivars offer the most economical and practical method of control. The primary objective of this study was to examine and evaluate new and previously reported sources of reniform nematode resistance in cotton, which could eventually be …

Ten hypotheses were tested. The following …
Production And Nitrogen Dynamics Of A Vallisneria Americana Grass Bed In Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana (Nitrogen Cycle, Modeling, Seagrasses, Decomposition Phenology, Vallisneria-Celery Grass-Eelgrass, Environmental Factors)., Diana Lee Steller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Vallisneria americana grass beds of Lake Pontchartrain contribute approximately 200 g dry weight/m('2)/yr primary production, a continuous release of detrital material, and rapid nutrient recycling. A harvest method was used to estimate production. The addition of litterfall to harvest production raised annual production estimates by up to 28%. When litterfall was corrected for decomposition, the production estimates were raised by up to 85% over harvest estimates alone. Litterfall and decomposition increased toward shore and occurred throughout the year providing a continuous supply of energy and nutrients. Grass bed production varied along the coastline and was greatest at mid-depths. Values of …

Allelochemicals From Soybean Affecting Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker) Biology And Pheromone From Chilo Plejadellus Zinken Mediating C. Plejadellus Sexual Behavior (Looper)., Porfirio Caballero
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Extracts of foliage from the insect resistant soybean genotype PI227687 were bioassayed for activity against the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), in feeding deterrency and growth inhibition tests. Dichloromethane extract had a pronounced deterrent effect on feeding, while petroleum ether and methanol extracts stimulated feeding. The water extract exhibited neutral activity. Flash chromatography of the dichloromethane extract yielded four fractions with moderate deterrent properties, one which was strongly deterrent, and one which was stimulative. Similar fractionation of the methanol extract yielded four fractions; one stimulated feeding, two deterred feeding, and one was neutral. Feeding P. includens larvae on artificial diet …

Chromatofocusing In The Purification And Separation Of Apo- And Holo-(Vitamin D-Binding Protein), M. J. Keenan, R. P. Holmes
Chromatofocusing In The Purification And Separation Of Apo- And Holo-(Vitamin D-Binding Protein), M. J. Keenan, R. P. Holmes
Faculty Publications
Chromatofocusing was used to purify the vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) from pig plasma in a procedure that consisted of an initial DEAE-cellulose chromatography followed by DEAE-Sephadex chromatography, with final purification by chromatofocusing. The protein was purified 184-fold over its concentration in plasma. When the plasma was labelled with a tracer concentration of [3H]calcidiol, it was apparent that holo- and apo-DBP did not co-chromatograph on chromatofocusing. The separation of these two forms of DBP on chromatofocusing was verified by using purified apo-DBP mixed with either a tracer or a saturating concentration of calcidiol. This separation was consistent with differences observed in …

The Behavioral Ecology Of The First Instar Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.) (Aggregation, Pheromone, Embryo, Egg, Nymph)., Jeffrey Alan Lockwood
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Outer row embryos of the southern green stick bug, Nezara viridula (L.), orient toward the center of the egg mass; inner row embryos do not. Embryonic orientation was mediated by stimuli provided by the glue which holds the egg mass together. Physical and chemical orientation cues associated with the glue were present only on the inner surfaces of outer row eggs; other eggs received no such differential stimuli and therefore oriented as a function of the oviposition behavior of the female. Embryonic orientation assured that upon hatching, outer row nymphs received the stimulation necessary for arrestment and inclusion in the …
Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner
Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner
Faculty Publications
Salt marshes are widely believed to serve as nurseries for many fishes and crustaceans of fishery value as a result of the high production of vascular plant detritus and the protection from predation offered by shallow, spatially complex habitats. Comparisons of the yields of species which reside in salt marsh habitats during critical life history stages (such as penaeid shrimp) with the area of such habitats and their greater densities in flooded marshes and associated tidal creeks support the premise that marshes enhance the yield of such species. A range of evidence, including the amount of detrital export from marshes, …

Liver And Egg Yolk Cholesterol Changes Caused By Dietary Lipids., Jesus Perez-Buriel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of seven short term experiments were conducted using SCWL laying hens to study liver and egg yolk cholesterol changes caused by dietary lipids. For all the experiments, the individually caged layers were 55 week-old or older and automated procedures were used to measure the liver and yolk cholesterol responses. In the first four experiments the diets contained olive or safflower oils at 8%, oleic or linoleic acids at 6%, all with or without cholesterol. In experiment 5, dietary levels of olive and safflower (1 and 8%) and cholesterol (0 and 1%) were factorially combined and examined. The olive …
Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar
Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study seeks to investigate the processes of socio-economic change that have affected the major ethnic groups in Manipur, mainly the subsistence level tribals and the Meitei peasantry; the strategies adopted by these groups, and individuals within the groups, to cope with the changed environment; and the spatial expression of these processes of change in varying patterns of development. Manipur, a polyethnic state in northeastern India, is currently the scene of hostilities among the different ethnic groups. The study tests the hypothesis that the underlying cause of these conflicts is the difference in the levels of development of the …

Mechanical And Chemical Conditioning As An Aid In Hastening Drying Rate Of Ryegrass Forage., Marcel Tsang Mui Chung
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate four types of mechanical, two types of chemical and combinations of mechanical-chemical conditioning treatments on drying rate and quality of ryegrass forage. Mechanical treatments ranged from cuticle abrasion to crushing of the stems while the chemicals were expected to remove or disrupt epicuticular waxes. The statistical design was a randomized block with two observations per cell. Analysis of variance results yielded highly significant block-treatment interaction for all variables examined. Two types of drying pattern were indicated. For treatments restricted to the plant surface as caused by the brushes and chemicals, the drying pattern was …

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Weeds which occur in crop ecosystems may cause suppressive or stimulating effects on arthropod abundance. Yet, little is known about the weed-insect interactions in Louisiana soybean. A three-part study was conducted from 1980-1983 to measure the abundance of arthropods in soybean, Glycine max Merr., as affected by the presence of absence of various weeds. A survey of arthropod abundance was conducted in commercial soybean fields which were either weedy or weed-free in central and south central Louisiana during 1980. Weedy fields had greater abundance of spiders, Geocoris punctipes (Say), and Lebia analis Dejean. Late instar green cloverworm, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner, …
