Platonic Economic Theory: The Economics Of Moderation., Kenneth Neal Townsend
Platonic Economic Theory: The Economics Of Moderation., Kenneth Neal Townsend
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation analyzes the contributions to the economic analysis of welfare made by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Heretofore unexamined, these contributions demonstrate the importance of the development of notions of sufficiency and moderation as integral parts of welfare analysis. This dissertation also examines the significance of Plato's method of inquiry into matters of social science for contemporary economic analysis. In particular, the importance of metamathematical induction for the acquisition of knowledge of the values upon which welfare depend is analyzed in the form that it is employed in Plato's dialogues. This analysis is conducted to the end that economists …

Models For The Economic Allocation Of Sampling Inspection Effort In Multi-Stage Production Systems., Hassan Dabbaghi
Models For The Economic Allocation Of Sampling Inspection Effort In Multi-Stage Production Systems., Hassan Dabbaghi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Appropriate inspection and control are significant components of production systems. Many products are manufactured in multistage production lines. At each stage the process can produce defective units. In order to produce finished products with desired quality in an economical way, considerations must be given to the explicit costs of inspection, repair, processing and disposal associated with particular levels of control and inspection. In this dissertation models and solution techniques are developed for simultaneous selection of sampling inspection plans and manufacturing operations control levels within multistage production systems. Per unit expected minimum cost of output quality, which satisfies specified consumer's and …
Nitrification At The Rice Root., Chayong Nammuang
Nitrification At The Rice Root., Chayong Nammuang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nitrification at the rice root was investigated. Nitrifiers were found in the rice rhizoplane, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils under flooded conditions. They were greater in the rhizoplane than in the rhizosphere soil and greatest at the heading stage of rice growth. Ammonium-sulfate or NaNO(,2) injected into the flooded soils with growing rice plants did not increase the activities of nitrifiers in the rice rhizoplane. Incubation of the flooded soil with (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) or NaNO(,2) did not increase the activities of NH(,4)('+)- or NO(,2)('-)-oxidizers in soils without rice. The (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) did not increase denitrifiers, but incubation with NaNO(,2) caused an early increase …
Regulation Of Macromolecular Synthesis In The Fungus Mucor Racemosus., Joseph Frederick Ross
Regulation Of Macromolecular Synthesis In The Fungus Mucor Racemosus., Joseph Frederick Ross
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cells of the dimorphic Zygomycetous fungus Mucor racemosus were grown in both batch and continuous culture in order to study the regulation of RNA and protein synthesis as a function of (i) growth rate, (ii) morphogenesis and (iii) nutritional shift-up. In all three cases cells were analyzed for parameters used to calculate (i) cellular ribosome concentration, (ii) percentage of ribosomes active in protein synthesis and (iii) polypeptide chain elongation rate. Cultures subjected to atmospheric or nutritional shifts were additionally pulse labelled or pulse labelled and steady-state labelled with radioactive amino acids and phosphate to measure the rates of synthesis and …
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …
Electronic Structure Of Iron., Diola Bagayoko
Electronic Structure Of Iron., Diola Bagayoko
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A survey of previous theoretical and experimental works on iron in some Bravais lattices and at various temperature and pressures shows this 3d transition metal to exhibit a wealth of allotropic transformations and to possess, along with some of its alloys, peculiar magnetic properties in the face centered cubic (FCC) phase. We present an ab-initio self-consistent spin polarized band structure study of this metal in the body (BCC) and face centered cubic lattices at absolute zero and at various atomic volumes. Our calculations employed gaussian basis functions in a LCAO scheme and used the RSK local density potential. In contrast …

The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today there is a burgeoning "new" law and economics literature which extends the application of economic principles virtually across the board. The essence of the "new" law and economics is value (or wealth) maximization, which means exploiting economic resources in such a way that value--human satisfaction as measured by willingness and ability to pay--is maximized. Value maximization has become essential in both explanative and reformative analyses of the law. This new science of law is not without its critics. They include economists, especially those of the Austrian and American Institutionalist schools, as well as various legal theorists and practitioners not …

Survival Of Vibrio Cholerae, Biotype E1 Tor, Serotype Inaba In Seafoods., Arthur Hinton Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The D values of Vibrio cholerae in oyster and shrimp meat homogenate were determined at 49(DEGREES), 54(DEGREES), 60(DEGREES), 66(DEGREES), 71(DEGREES), 77(DEGREES), and 82(DEGREES)C. In oyster homogenates, the D values in minutes were 4.7 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.33 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.29 at 77(DEGREES)C, and < 0.24 at 82(DEGREES)C. In shrimp homogenates, the D values in minutes were 9.17 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.43 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.39 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.32 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.31 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 77(DEGREES), and < 0.28 at 82(DEGREES)C. Whole oysters, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae/gram, were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in hot oil (191(DEGREES)C) for one minute. Whole shrimp, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in steam (100(DEGREES)C) for 10 minutes. Vibrio cholerae was not isolated from the cooked oysters or shrimp. Sterile and unsterile shrimp, oyster, crab, and crayfish meat homogenates were inoculated with 10('7) V. cholerae/g. The homogenates were treated with 0, 25, 50, or 100 krad and stored at 4(DEGREES), 0(DEGREES), or -8(DEGREES)C for 21 days. No V. cholerae were isolated from any of the homogenates treated with 100 krad. Vibrio cholerae was able to survive longer in the sterile oyster, crab and crayfish homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at the same temperatures. The organism was able to survive longer in the unsterile shrimp homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the sterile homogenates stored at the same temperature. At -8(DEGREES)C, survival time was usually longer in the unsterile seafood homogenates than in the sterile seafood homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C. Due to the retardation of competitive inhibition the organism was usually able to survive longer in the unsterile homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) or 0(DEGREES)C.
The Effect Of Gypsum Amendments On The Displacement Of Exchangeable Aluminum From Acid Bt Horizons., Charles Kanmu Mulbah
The Effect Of Gypsum Amendments On The Displacement Of Exchangeable Aluminum From Acid Bt Horizons., Charles Kanmu Mulbah
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two acidic silt loam soils, Beauregard and Gigger were used in a study involving Ca movement and Al displacement from 15.2 cm laboratory soil clumns. Each column was uniformly packed to the appropriate bulk density. The top 5.1 cm portion of each column contained soil pre-mixed with powdered gypsum at rates of 0, 1 and 2 equivalents of the exchangeable Al. Calcium movement and Al displacement in the soil columns were accomplished by applying distilled-deionized water at a constant flow rate and the effluent was analyzed. In addition, a pulse containing dissolved gypsum at the rate of 4 Al equivalents …
Computer Analysis Of Coastal Ocean Features In Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery (Japan, Gotoh Islands)., Gary Arthur Mastin
Computer Analysis Of Coastal Ocean Features In Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery (Japan, Gotoh Islands)., Gary Arthur Mastin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A wide variety of oceanographic phenomena is revealed in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ocean imagery. Four basic classes of SAR oceanographic phenomena, surface waves, fronts, wind patterns and internal waves, are of oceanographic interest. These classes are defined in light of their generation mechanisms and as a function of Bragg scattering, which accounts for their visualization in SAR ocean imagery. Digital exploitation of SAR imagery offers image enhancement and parameter extraction capabilities and is currently an area of extensive research. The state of the art in digital exploitation of SAR imagery is reviewed, with special attention to SAR speckle reduction …

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Teaching Computer Programming To Secondary Mathematics Students., Mary Diane Bodin Calamari
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was formulated in order to gain information about the effectiveness of two methods of instructing secondary mathematics students in introductory computer programming. Investigation of programming instruction in a reduced period of time was a major component of the study for those educators who choose to teach programming as a portion of a mathematics course must do so under time constraints. The research was conducted in three public secondary schools in St. Mary Parish in Louisiana. The subjects were enrolled in an algebra II or a geometry class during the spring semester of the 1982-83 academic year. An experimental-control …
Geodetic Graphs And Convexity., Michael Franklyn Bridgland
Geodetic Graphs And Convexity., Michael Franklyn Bridgland
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A graph is geodetic if each two vertices are joined by a unique shortest path. The problem of characterizing such graphs was posed by Ore in 1962; although the geodetic graphs of diameter two have been described and classified by Stemple and Kantor, little is known of the structure of geodetic graphs in general. In this work, geodetic graphs are studied in the context of convexity in graphs: for a suitable family (PI) of paths in a graph G, an induced subgraph H of G is defined to be (PI)-convex if the vertex-set of H includes all vertices of G …

Behavior Of Euphorbia Heterophylla Seed Bank., Vernon B. Langston
Behavior Of Euphorbia Heterophylla Seed Bank., Vernon B. Langston
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Short term burial of freshly harvested seed and soil disturbances in agricultural populations of wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) indicated a very low carry over of seeds into the second season after dissemination. After seeds were buried at 10, 50, 100, and 200 mm in the fall; 4%, 81%, 30% and 1%, respectively, produced seedlings during the following growing season, and only 3%, 1%, < 1%, and 3% of the seeds, respectively, were viable after one year. Soil disturbances (tillage) did not affect seedling recruitment or longevity of wild poinsettia seed. Early planting dates (May 1) of soybeans required 6 weeks of weed-free maintenance to prevent serious reinfestation and subsequent yield reductions in fields with a high agronomic seed bank of wild poinsettia, whereas for late planting dates (June 10) 3 weeks of weed-free maintenance was required. No significant difference in yield was detected between one or two cultivations for either planting date.

A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A taxonomy developed of specific selling activities of industrial salespeople was developed to differentiate "types" of salespeople. The taxonomy was developed based on the responses of 1393 salespeople from 51 companies to a survey of the frequency with which they performed activities, and the time spent to perform each activity. The first stage of the research was the compilation of an exhaustive list of sales activities. These activities were collected from a series of focus groups and personal interviews. The questionnaire was formulated based on the 121 sales activities collected from the focus groups. Two scales were designed and implemented …
On A Matroid Identity, James G. Oxley
On A Matroid Identity, James G. Oxley
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this note is to prove an identity for generalized Tutte-Grothendieck invariants, at least two special cases of which have already proved to be of considerable use. In addition, one of these special cases is used to strengthen results of Lindström on the critical exponent of a representable matroid and the chromatic number of a regular matroid. © 1983.
Statistical Mechanics Of Conformational Transitions In Biopolymers., Rachid Charbel Maroun
Statistical Mechanics Of Conformational Transitions In Biopolymers., Rachid Charbel Maroun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently extended theoretical methods and existent experimental methods have been employed for the determination of conformational-dependent properties of polymers of biological interest like synthetic polyamino acids, natural polypeptides and proteins. Calculation of theoretical properties, like for example average helical content and average helical length, as derived from the configuration partition function has been achieved by making use of the Rotational Isomeric State approximation through modifications and innovations of a nearest-neighbor interaction version of the Zimm-Bragg model of helix-coil transitions as presented in a matrix format suitable for use in an electronic computer. The scope of the theory allows for the …

Analysis Of Forest Tent Caterpillar, Malacosoma Disstria Hbn. (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), Populations In Louisiana., James David Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The forest tent caterpillar (FTC), Malacosoma disstria Hbn. (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), has caused noticeable defoliation to tupelo gum, Nyssa aquatica L., in southern Louisiana since 1948. This species has a tremendous population growth potential and in epidemic years can totally exceed its host foliage resource. FTC egg hatch in Louisiana occurred after an average of 1,284 degree days using a beginning overwintering period of December 1 and a threshold temperature of 4.4(DEGREES)C 40(DEGREES)F). Larval development proceeded through five instars in Louisiana. Adult emergence and egg oviposition was completed by the second week in June. Two species of egg parasitoids, Ooencyrtus clisiocampae …
