Methods Of Parameter Estimation Of Linear Regression Models For Yield Prediction., Man Yong Shin Jan 1989

Methods Of Parameter Estimation Of Linear Regression Models For Yield Prediction., Man Yong Shin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Different parameter estimation methods of yield prediction models were investigated using data from the Southwide Loblolly Pine Seed Source Study. This project consisted of three distinct studies. Each study dealt with a possible situation in which other parameter estimation methods rather than the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator might be used. Three different evaluation statistics were computed to select the "best" estimation method for each situation. The objective of the first study was to select the best estimator for a yield model which had multicollinearity among independent variables. Three types of biased estimators were compared with the ordinary least squares …

Models And Tests In Functional Morphology: The Significance Of Description And Integration, Dominique G. Homberger Dec 1988

Models And Tests In Functional Morphology: The Significance Of Description And Integration, Dominique G. Homberger

Faculty Publications

SYNOPSIS: Functional-anatomical work on complex structural systems is handicapped by several difficulties: (1) Lack of established guidelines on how to select the structures that are relevant for the intended study, (2) lack of methods to check the accuracy of the description of a system's morphology, and (3) the need to integrate a large mass of results obtained through a variety of approaches taken from different disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, physics, biochemistry, ecology and evolutionary biology. Suggestions to alleviate some of the problems include (1) to use information on the physiological and physical properties of the tissues in a system …

Dissipative Quantum Tunneling: Quantum Langevin Equation Approach, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell Mar 1988

Dissipative Quantum Tunneling: Quantum Langevin Equation Approach, G. W. Ford, J. T. Lewis, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

The quantum Langevin equation is used as the basis for a discussion of dissipative quantum tunneling. A general analysis, including strong coupling and non-markovian (memory) effects, is given for the case of tunneling through a parabolic barrier at zero temperature in the presence of linear passive dissipation. It is shown that dissipation always decreases the tunneling rate below the barrier and increases transmission above the barrier. As a particular application, the case of the resistively shunted Josephson junction is considered. Simple closed form expressions for the tunneling rate and for the noise power spectrum are obtained and compared with results …

The Genetic Variance-Covariance Structure Of The Louisiana Sugarcane Breeding Population., Scott Bradly Milligan Jan 1988

The Genetic Variance-Covariance Structure Of The Louisiana Sugarcane Breeding Population., Scott Bradly Milligan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Genetic variances estimates were obtained for ten traits of the Louisiana sugarcane breeding population. The variances and resulting statistics were derived from a population of three offspring each from 40 biparental crosses of 28 elite parents. The offspring and their parents were grown in replicated tests in five environments (year-location combinations). Narrow and broad-sense heritabilities, genetic correlations, genetic coefficients of variation and genetic gain estimates were estimated. To represent clonal populations in different stages of selection, the population was divided into three subpopulations: offspring, noncommercial parents and commercial parents. For each subpopulation, the genotype x environment (GE) variation was partitioned …

Effect Of Cooperative Grouping On Stoichiometric Problem-Solving In High School Chemistry., Joy Bridges Tingle Jan 1988

Effect Of Cooperative Grouping On Stoichiometric Problem-Solving In High School Chemistry., Joy Bridges Tingle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of stoichiometric problem solving in chemistry was conducted in three high schools in a rural school district. Students (n = 178) in grades 10-12 solved problems individually or in a cooperative group using a prescriptive problem-solving strategy. This strategy consisted of a statement of the problem, redescription that included not only extraction of the stated and implied information but picture discription, prediction, mathematical solution, and check. The main purpose of the study was to determine empirically whether there was a difference in achievement between students solving problems individually and in cooperative groups. The cooperative groups were heterogeneously based …

This study examined thought processes including problem-solving and interpretations of instructional situations of expert and novice physical education teachers at two grade levels. Four expert and four novice teachers (two each at the third grade and two each at the seventh grade) participated in the study. Thoughts, concerns, decisions, and awarenesses of expert and novice teachers during instruction were evaluated as well as their students' perceptions of the instruction. A total of 144 students were interviewed. Class rules and management routines established during the first week of the school year by two of the expert teachers (one at each grade …

A Study To Investigate The Effects Of State Taxation And Plan Type On Small Employer Retirement Plan Cost., W. Robert Smith Jan 1988

A Study To Investigate The Effects Of State Taxation And Plan Type On Small Employer Retirement Plan Cost., W. Robert Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Congress enacted legislation in 1978 (Revenue Act of 1978) that created a new type of retirement plan, the simplified employee plan. Congress believed that the administration costs associated with existing plans, especially qualified plans, were an undesirable obstacle to plan adoption and maintenance among small employers. Qualified plan participants, i.e., employees, in many cases are able to receive substantial reductions in the amount of tax due on retirement plan distributions. One of the primary differences between qualified plans and the simplified employee plans mentioned above is that under certain circumstances the tax due on distributions from qualified plans may be …

Intensional Query Processing In Deductive Database Systems., Il Yeol Song Jan 1988

Intensional Query Processing In Deductive Database Systems., Il Yeol Song

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the problem of deriving a set of non-ground first-order logic formulas (intensional answers), as an answer set to a given query, rather than a set of facts (extensional answers), in deductive database (DDB) systems based on non-recursive Horn clauses. A strategy in previous work in this area is to use resolution to derive intensional answers. It leaves however, several important problems. Some of them are: no specific resolution strategy is given; no specific methodologies to formalize the meaningful intensional answers are given; no solution is given to handle large facts in extensional databases (EDB); and no strategy …

Neural Networks With Asynchronous Control., Michael Christopher Stinson Jan 1988

Neural Networks With Asynchronous Control., Michael Christopher Stinson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neural network studies have previously focused on monolithic structures. The brain has a bicameral nature, however, and so it is natural to expect that bicameral structures will perform better. This dissertation offers an approach to the development of such bicameral structures. The companion neural structure takes advantage of the global and subset characteristics of the stored memories. Specifically we propose the use of an asynchronous controller C that implies the following update of a probe vector x by the connection matrix T: $x\sp\prime$ = sgn (C(x, TX)). For a VLSI-implemented neural network the controller block can be easily placed in …

Cogmir: A Computer Model For Knowledge Integration., Zheng Xin Chen Jan 1988

Cogmir: A Computer Model For Knowledge Integration., Zheng Xin Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Knowledge integration is an important topic for knowledge engineering. In this dissertation, we explore some aspects of knowledge integration, namely, accumulation of scientific knowledge and performing analogical reasoning on the acquired knowledge. Knowledge to be integrated is conveyed by paragraph-like pieces, these pieces will be referred to as documents. By incorporating some results from cognitive science, the Deutsch-Kraft model of information retrieval is extended to a model for knowledge engineering, which integrates acquired knowledge and performs intelligent retrieval. The resulting computer model is termed COGMIR, which stands for a COGnitive Model for Intelligent Retrieval. A scheme, named query invoked memory …

Online Detection And Estimation Of Parameter Jumps., Fahmida Nilufar Chowdhury Jan 1988

Online Detection And Estimation Of Parameter Jumps., Fahmida Nilufar Chowdhury

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In many dynamic systems, the parameters are subject to jumps at unknown points in time. The jumps may be the result of some change in the operating system, or plant failure. In this work a method has been developed for fast detection of these jumps and estimation of the post-jump values. The proposed method is called the Combined Filter Algorithm. It is based on the conventional Kalman filter. Single-sample hypothesis test is used to determine the presence or absence of jumps. Small jumps, missed by the hypothesis test, are traced by a Random Walk Model Kalman filter. This is made …

Intermolecular Interactions And The Theory Of Electron Transfer Between Hexaaquoiron Ions And Hexaammineruthenium Ions In Water., Paul James Magestro Jan 1988

Intermolecular Interactions And The Theory Of Electron Transfer Between Hexaaquoiron Ions And Hexaammineruthenium Ions In Water., Paul James Magestro

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Theoretical studies of the electron transfer rates between hexaaquoiron(II) and (III) ions, and between hexaammineruthenium(II) and (III) ions in aqueous solutions have been undertaken using detailed representations of the interaction potentials and including the flexibility of the ligand geometry. This is done through an intuitive and efficient computational scheme involving tested site-site potentials for water and ammonia. The calculations on the ferrous-ferric electron exchange indicate that fluctuations in the configuration of the hydration shell are important and affect the rate significantly. In the hexaammineruthenium reaction, there is no evidence for any substantial contribution from this factor, although rates tend to …

Determination Of The Range In Binding-Site Densities Of Rat Skin Heparin Chains With High Binding Affinities For Antithrombin., A. A. Horner, M. Kusche, U. Lindahl, C. B. Peterson Jan 1988

Determination Of The Range In Binding-Site Densities Of Rat Skin Heparin Chains With High Binding Affinities For Antithrombin., A. A. Horner, M. Kusche, U. Lindahl, C. B. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Rat skin heparin proteoglycans vary markedly in the proportions of their constituent polysaccharide chains that have high binding affinity for antithrombin. As the proportion of such chains in a proteoglycan rises, their degree of affinity for antithrombin also increases [Horner (1987) Biochem. J. 244, 693-698]. The antithrombin-binding-site densities of such chains have now been determined, by measuring heparin-induced enhancement of the intrinsic fluorescence of antithrombin and by chemical analysis for the disaccharide sequence glucuronosyl-N-sulphoglucosaminyl (3,6-di-O-sulphate), which is unique to this site in heparin [Lindahl, Bäckström, Thunberg & Leder (1980) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 77, 6551-6555]. Antithrombin-binding-site density ranged from …

Ergodic Actions Of Semi-Direct Product Groups., Edgar Navarro Reyes Jan 1988

Ergodic Actions Of Semi-Direct Product Groups., Edgar Navarro Reyes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We describe ergodic Borel actions of a semi-direct product group $K$ $\times\sb{s}$ $G$ on a standard Borel space where G is a group acting on a compact group K by automorphisms. In the canonical action of G on the dual K of K we assume each G-orbit in K is finite. This condition is automatically satisfied if K is a compact connected semi-simple Lie group. We discuss amenable actions and relatively weakly-mixing actions of this semi-direct product group.

Comparison Between Solutions Of Sdes And Odes, P. Sundar

Faculty Publications

A ratio-limit comparison between ξt, the solution of an SDE driven by a semimartingale, and Ht, the solution of an associated ODE, is proved on the set where limt→∞ξt=∞. Sufficient conditions in terms of the driving processes and the coefficients are obtained for limt→∞ξt to be ∞. © 1988.

Integrated Semigroups And Their Applications To The Abstract Cauchy Problem, Frank Neubrander Jan 1988

Integrated Semigroups And Their Applications To The Abstract Cauchy Problem, Frank Neubrander

Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with characterizations of those linear, closed, but not necessarily densely defined operators A on a Banach space E with nonempty resolvent set for which the abstract Cauchy problem u′(t) = Au(t), u(0) = x has unique, exponentially bounded solutions for every initial value x ∈ D(An). Investigating these operators we are led to the class of "integrated semigroups". Among others, this class contains the classes of strongly continuous semigroups and cosine families and the class of exponentially bounded distribution semigroups. The given characterizations of the generators of these integrated semigroups unify and generalize the classical characterizations …

Lessons Of The Masters: Social Tension As A Creative Necessity In The Fiction Of Hawthorne, James, And Joyce., Craig Arthur Milliman Jan 1988

Lessons Of The Masters: Social Tension As A Creative Necessity In The Fiction Of Hawthorne, James, And Joyce., Craig Arthur Milliman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of talented characters reveals that three of the most influential novelists in English dealt with the often disabling image of the artist they had inherited from their Romantic forebears by insisting on dialectical tension between the artist and society as essential to the creation of literary art. The various talented characters in Hawthorne's short fiction, such as Aylmer, Rappaccini, Oberon, the Canterbury poet, the portrait painter of "The Prophetic Pictures," the woodcarver Drowne, and Owen Warland, fail to create art unless they retain certain links with their societies of origin. This tension between artist and society appears as …

Modelling Of Passive Contaminant Transport In River Sediments., Susan Anne Savant-Malhiet Jan 1988

Modelling Of Passive Contaminant Transport In River Sediments., Susan Anne Savant-Malhiet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contaminant transport from riverine sediments was investigated via physical and mathematical models. Due to its remote nature, there exists a lack of understanding of transport mechanisms and rates at the sediment-water interface of rivers. This dissertation is focused on evaluation of potential abiotic transport processes which affect the movement of contaminants across this sediment-water interface. Only non-dispersive transport of passive contaminants was considered allowing the research to focus on the movement of the sediment pore water which carries the contaminants. The abiotic processes studied include the advection by flow of sediment pore water and the movement and turnover of sediment …

A Hybrid Model For Document Retrieval Systems., Zhen-Bao Zou Jan 1988

A Hybrid Model For Document Retrieval Systems., Zhen-Bao Zou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A methodology for the design of document retrieval systems is presented. First, a composite index term weighting model is developed based on term frequency statistics, including document frequency, relative frequency within document and relative frequency within collection, which can be adjusted by selecting various coefficients to fit into different indexing environments. Then, a composite retrieval model is proposed to process a user's information request in a weighted Phrase-Oriented Fixed-Level Expression (POFLE), which may apply more than Boolean operators, through two phases. That is, we have a search for documents which are topically relevant to the information request by means of …

Class Numbers And Units Of Number Fields E With Elementary Abelian K(2)O(E)., Ruth Ilse Berger Jan 1988

Class Numbers And Units Of Number Fields E With Elementary Abelian K(2)O(E)., Ruth Ilse Berger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is a contribution to the research that is going on in Algebraic Number Theory, relating classical questions on class numbers and units of a number field F to the structure of $K\sb2$($O\sb{F}$), the Milnor K-group $K\sb2$ of the ring of integers. We are interested in number fields F where the 2-primary subgroup of $K\sb2$($O\sb{F}$) is elementary abelian of rank $r\sb1$(F), the number of real embeddings of F. In (C-$H\sb1$) it is proven that the 2-primary subgroup of $K\sb2(O\sb{F}$) is of the above type if and only if the number field has the following properties: (a) the number field has …

Characterization Of The Pulpwood Procurement Environment Of Northwest Louisiana With A Geographic Information System., Richard William Brinker Jan 1988

Characterization Of The Pulpwood Procurement Environment Of Northwest Louisiana With A Geographic Information System., Richard William Brinker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An analysis of the pulpwood procurement environment was made to describe and model forest land area, ownership patterns, timber production, forest inventory, and the transportation network of 13 parishes in the northwest region of Louisiana. Pulpwood delivered to a pulpmill accounts for approximately 50 percent of pulp production costs. The cost of delivered pulpwood is a function of the mode of transportation, distance from the mill, competition for stumpage, and quality of the transportation network. A data base is developed from wood usage requirements, pulpmill and wood concentration yard locations, location of forested areas and their relative volumes. Areas of …

White Noise Approach To Multiparameter Stochastic Integration., Mylan Redfern Betounes Jan 1988

White Noise Approach To Multiparameter Stochastic Integration., Mylan Redfern Betounes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation we will set up the Hida theory of generalized Brownian functionals, or white noise analysis, on ${\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d})$, the space of tempered distributions, and apply it to multiparameter stochastic integration. With the partial ordering on $\IR\sbsp{+}{\rm d}$: (s$\sb1$, dots,s$\sb{\rm d}$) $<$ (t$\sb1$, dots,t$\sb{\rm d}$) if s$\sb{\rm i}$ $<$ t$\sb{\rm i}$, 1 $\leq$ i $\leq$ d, the Wiener process W((t$\sb1$, dots,t$\sb{\rm d}$),x) = $\langle$x,1$\sb{\rm \lbrack 0,t\sb1)\times\cdots \times\lbrack 0,t\sb{d})}\rangle$, x $\in {\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d})$ is a generalization of a Brownian motion and there is the Wiener-Ito decomposition: L$\sp2({\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d}))$ = $\sum\sbsp{\rm n = 0}{\infty}\times$K$\sb{\rm n}$, where K$\sb{\rm n}$ is the space of n-tuple Weiner integrals. As in the one-dimensional case, there are the continuous inclusions (L$\sp2)\sp+ \subset$ L$\sp2({\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d})) \subset$ (L$\sp2)\sp-$, and (L$\sp2)\sp-$ is considered the space of generalized Wiener functionals. We will define the differentiation operator $\partial\sb{\rm (t\sb1,\dots,t\sb{d}})$ and its adjoint $\partial\sp{\*}\sb{\rm (t\sb1,\dots,t\sb{d})}$ and give some properties. We prove that the multidimensional time Ito stochastic integral is a special case of a white noise integral and give conditions for its existence. For d = 2 the Ito integral is not sufficient for representing elements of L$\sp2({\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp2))$. We show that the other integral involved can also be realized in the white noise setting. For F $\in {\cal L}\sp{\*}(\IR\sp{\rm d}$) we will then define F(W((s,t),x) as an element of (L$\sp2)\sp-$ and obtain a generalized Ito formula.

Minimum Time Motion Of A Robotic Manipulator., Heon Hwang Jan 1988

Minimum Time Motion Of A Robotic Manipulator., Heon Hwang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation treats the modeling, analysis, and trajectory control of a robotic manipulator to execute specified point-to-point tasks. The relative coordinate representation of kinematic and dynamic variables is defined using vectors and matrices based on coordinate transformations. A kinematic modeling of a manipulator is performed using Denavit-Hartenberg link parameters. For given end-effector information (location and orientation), a stable and efficient iterative numerical algorithm for a joint solution is developed. A modified general Gauss elimination and a direct minimum search are combined with other refinements to yield fast convergency and stable results. This algorithm can be used as a routine solution …

Application Of Entropy Theory To Multivariate Hydrologic Analysis. (Volumes I And Ii)., Predrag Felix Krstanovic Jan 1988

Application Of Entropy Theory To Multivariate Hydrologic Analysis. (Volumes I And Ii)., Predrag Felix Krstanovic

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses the multivariate hydrologic analysis by the entropy theory. It is divided into two major parts. The first part (Volume I) examines hydrologic frequency analysis, specifically rainfall-runoff modeling and the design of rainfall networks. The second part (Volume II) develops two flood forecasting models: the univariate streamflow model, and the bivariate rainfall-runoff model. The hydrologic frequency analysis focuses on three topics: multivariate normal distribution, multivariate exponential distribution and multivariate exponential distribution and multivariate mixed distributions. Many forms of univariate, bivariate and multivariate normal distributions are derived by using the principle of maximum entropy (POME), emphasizing the serial dependency …

On Prime Powers And Symbolic Prime Powers., Patrick Hall Phenis Jan 1988

On Prime Powers And Symbolic Prime Powers., Patrick Hall Phenis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We study the conditions under which the power of a prime ideal is equal to the corresponding symbolic prime power. We begin by extending a result of Villamayor(h). We consider a smooth k-algebra S(S$\sp\prime$) which is the localization of a finite k-algebra where k is a field of characteristic zero. For a prime ideal P (P$\sp\prime$) we show that if $S\over P$ $\cong$ $S\sp\prime\over P\sp\prime$ then P$\sp{n}$ = P$\sp{(n)}$ if and only if P$\sp\prime\sp{n}$ = P$\sp\prime\sp{(n)}$, for n $\geq$ 1. In the proof we use a generalization of the notion of a truncated cotangent complex introduced by Illusie. We then …

On The Relative K(2) Of Non Commutative Local Rings., Robert B. Russell Jan 1988

On The Relative K(2) Of Non Commutative Local Rings., Robert B. Russell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines topics in Algebraic K-Theory, concerning the computation of absolute and relative Milnor groups, K$\sb2$(R) and K$\sb2$(R,I), for both commutative and non-commutative classes of rings, including the relative K$\sb2$ of non-commutative (not necessarily commutative) rings, and the absolute K$\sb2$ of commutative semilocal rings. Our main theorem is a natural extension of a result by Maazen and Stienstra (H. Maazen and J. Steinstra, A presentation of K$\sb2$ of split radical pairs, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 10(1977), 271-294) which determines the relative K$\sb2$ of rings in a commutative setting. We prove the non-commutative analog of this result for local rings. …

On Roundedness In Matroid Theory., Talmage James Reid Jan 1988

On Roundedness In Matroid Theory., Talmage James Reid

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis studies the relationship between subsets and specified minors in a 3-connected matroid. For positive integers k and m, a set S of k-connected matroids is (k,m)-rounded if it satisfies the following condition. Whenever M is a k-connected matroid having an S-minor and X is a subset of E(M) with at most m elements, then M has an S-minor using X. Oxley characterized the (3,2)-rounded sets that contain a single matroid. In Chapter 2, we obtain an analog of this result for binary matroids. In Chapter 3, we use this result to characterize the pairs of matroids which form …
