Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim
Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a procedure, which can only consider relative priorities as estimated by decision-makers. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is a data-oriented approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of a group of entities referred to as Decision Making Units (DMUs). This research work integrates and combines positive aspects of AHP's estimated qualitative data and DEA's quantitative data. This combination is accomplished by specifying two variants of the DEA methodology for selection of the best DMU. Initially the priority weights of AHP are integrated with the DEA methodology to provide results that are logic based. Next, …
The Effects Of The Laboratory On College Students' Understanding Of Evolution: Implications For Conceptual Change., Lorna Benita Holtman
The Effects Of The Laboratory On College Students' Understanding Of Evolution: Implications For Conceptual Change., Lorna Benita Holtman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated eighty junior and senior college students' understanding of evolutionary biology concepts in lecture-only and lecture-laboratory settings. The evolution lab stressed the processes of evolution, and involved simulations, experiments, discussions, report writing, and reading. Test scores do not reveal everything about the actual process of learning in the laboratory. This study examined conceptual change patterns over a period of one semester using in-depth interviews with eight participants. The study revealed that the lecture-laboratory group performed better than the lecture-only group on certain shared items on the objective examination. The interview participants showed various patterns of conceptual change; that …
A Method To Discriminate Species From Hydroacoustic Fish Sampling Systems., Rui De Paula E Silva
A Method To Discriminate Species From Hydroacoustic Fish Sampling Systems., Rui De Paula E Silva
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Samples of species and size composition obtained by trawling were matched with the corresponding echo-distributions from two hydroacoustic and trawl surveys in the western Indian Ocean, off Mozambique, and in two surveys in the northern Gulf of Mexico. In the Mozambique surveys, a Simrad EY-M echosounder was used and the data was analyzed by applying the Craig & Forbes algorithm. In the Gulf of Mexico surveys, a BioSonics Dual-beam System (Model 102 echosounder, ESP echo-integrator, and ESP dual-beam processor) was used. The results obtained show that, provided that a particular hydroacoustic and trawl sample yielded a stable size-distribution of the …

Bioanalytical Applications In The Near -Infrared Region Using Fluorescent Covalent And Non-Covalent Probes With Near-Infrared Fluorescence Detection., Clyde Vernon Owens Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research presented in this dissertation entails the preparation, characterization, and analytical application of a series of novel tricarbocyanine, phthalocyanine, and napthalocyanine dyes which can be used as fluorescent probes for bioanalytical assays. The first part of this research focuses on the synthesis of a nuclear staining tricarbocyanine dye used for low-level detection of DNA restriction fragments separated via capillary electrophoresis. The second part focuses on the synthetic, purification, and applications of several tricarbocyanine, phthalocyanine, and naphthalocyanine dyes. The tricarbocyanine dyes were synthesized to contain a heavy atom-modification to enhance k isc through spin-orbit coupling and a reactive functional group …
Essays On The Gain -Loss Pricing Model., Kevin Chun-Hsiung Chiang
Essays On The Gain -Loss Pricing Model., Kevin Chun-Hsiung Chiang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation conducts empirical examinations of a new normative (equilibrium) model, the Gain-Loss Pricing Model (GLPM) of Lin (1999a), in which loss aversion is intuitively incorporated into investors' portfolio decisions. In this equilibrium, the risk-return relation is based on the tradeoff between the expected market-related gain of an asset and its expected market-related loss. In addition to its economic intuition, the new model is shown to be more robust than the mean-variance-based Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). This dissertation consists of two essays. The first essay examines the empirical power of the GLPM using NYSE/AMEX/NASDAQ stocks. This testing framework has …
Modeling Escherichia Coli Concentration In Surface Runoff: The Ecoli Model., Teck Yee Ling
Modeling Escherichia Coli Concentration In Surface Runoff: The Ecoli Model., Teck Yee Ling
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A biological model, ECOLI, is developed that is capable of continuously simulating E. coli concentration in surface runoff from agricultural land applied with manure. The model was calibrated and validated by using data from field-scale studies at Franklinton, Louisiana. During validation the model was interfaced with GLEAMS-SWT model to obtain the necessary hydrologic and erosion variables as input to the ECOLI model. The ECOLI model was found to perform best when simulating runoff concentration following the first application of waste. For reapplication of waste within 50 days, the trend of decrease over time was well-simulated but simulated E. coli concentrations …
The Design And Construction Of Novel Near -Infrared Time -Correlated Single Photon Counting Devices For The Identification Of Analytes In Multiplexed Applications., Emanuel Austin Waddell Jr
The Design And Construction Of Novel Near -Infrared Time -Correlated Single Photon Counting Devices For The Identification Of Analytes In Multiplexed Applications., Emanuel Austin Waddell Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This manuscript details the design, construction, and application of novel near infrared time correlated single photon counting devices to the identification of analytes in analytical separations. The thrust of this research is to provide a simple, low cost technique for the high-speed identification of DNA sequencing bases that are labeled with a series of unique near infrared fluorophores. These fluorophores are unique because they possess the same emission and absorption maxima, but different fluorescence lifetimes. Consequently, they allow analytes to be discriminated by fluorescence lifetime as opposed to color. The first goal of this dissertation research was to implement a …
Hydrodynamics, Bottom Boundary Layer Processes And Sediment Transport On The South-Central Louisiana Inner Shelf: The Influence Of Extratropical Storms And Bathymetric Modification., David Alton Pepper
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The south-central Louisiana inner shelf has several distinctive characteristics that are not well accounted for by common hydrodynamic and sediment transport models, including a high-frequency wave regime, low fair-weather hydrodynamic energy levels, a coastal orientation parallel to most storm approaches, and a prominent submerged sand body (Ship Shoal). To address these unique considerations, inner-shelf processes were studied using three instrumentation systems deployed on the seaward and landward sides of the shoal between November, 1998 and January, 1999. These instruments were designed to measure hydrodynamic characteristics, suspended sediment concentration, and bed level, which were used to calculate bottom boundary layer parameters …
Effect Of Interfacial Tension On Propagating Polymerization Fronts, R. Texier-Picard, J. A. Pojman, Vit A. Volpert
Effect Of Interfacial Tension On Propagating Polymerization Fronts, R. Texier-Picard, J. A. Pojman, Vit A. Volpert
Faculty Publications
This paper is devoted to the investigation of polymerization fronts converting a liquid monomer into a liquid polymer. We assume that the monomer and the polymer are immiscible and study the influence of the interfacial tension on the front stability. The mathematical model consists of the reaction-diffusion equations coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations through the convection terms. The jump conditions at the interface take into account the interfacial tension. Simple physical arguments show that the same temperature distribution could not lead to Marangoni instability for a nonreacting system. We fulfill a linear stability analysis and show that interaction of the …
A Canonical Description Of The Plancherel Measure For A General Two-Step Free Nilpotent Lie Group., Chin-Te Chu
A Canonical Description Of The Plancherel Measure For A General Two-Step Free Nilpotent Lie Group., Chin-Te Chu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this work on g=Fn,2 , free 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra on n generators, we use the group of automorphisms to give a basis-free description of the Fourier Inversion Formula, thereby generalizing and strengthening an example discussed by Corwin & Greenleaf. In the Introduction we discuss Example 4.3.14 in Corwin & Greenleaf's book. It demonstrates how different bases of F3,2 lead to different inversion formulas. But the third "more" invariant formula describes Plancherel measure on a support expressed in terms of rotations, dilations, and translations. Actually it is not canonical since it still depends on choices of bases for F3,2 …
On Stochastic Integration For White Noise Distribution Theory., Said Kalema Ngobi
On Stochastic Integration For White Noise Distribution Theory., Said Kalema Ngobi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This thesis consists of two parts, each part concentrating on a different problem from the theory of Stochastic Integration. Chapter 1 contains the introduction explaining the results in this dissertation in general terms. We use the infinite dimensional space S'R endowed with the gaussian measure mu. The Hilbert space ( L2) is defined as (L2) (L2) ≡ L2( S'R , mu) and our results are based on the Gel'fand triple ( S )beta ⊂ (L2) ⊂ S* b . The necessary preliminary background in white noise analysis are well elaborated in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 we present a generalization …
A Class Of Stable, Globally Noniterative, Nonoverlapping Domain Decomposition Algorithms For The Simulation Of Parabolic Evolutionary Systems., Yu Zhuang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Parabolic systems are governed by time dependent partial differential equations. To obtain a high simulation quality that captures important features of a parabolic system requires solving the governing equation to an adequate accuracy, which necessitates a large sampling size in the spatial and temporal dimensions, and hence a large amount of simulation data and high computing cost. Domain decomposition is an effective method of divide-and-conquer paradigm that divides the problem domain into several subdomains, reducing the original problem into several smaller interdependent problems which can be solved in parallel. In this dissertation, we propose a class of stabilized explicit-implicit time …
Lie Semigroups With Triple Decompositions, Jimmie Lawson, Yongdo Lim
Lie Semigroups With Triple Decompositions, Jimmie Lawson, Yongdo Lim
Faculty Publications
In this paper we establish that the causal order determined by an Ol'shanski semigroup on the corresponding homogeneous space is globally hyperbolic. Using this fact, we present sufficient conditions for a special class of Lie semigroups to admit a canonical "triple decomposition," namely those for which the Lie algebra is of Cayley type. This theory applies in particular to semigroups which are naturally associated to euclidean Jordan algebras as the semigroup of compressions of the symmetric cone of the algebra.
Generalized Δ-Y Exchange And K-Regular Matroids, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Dirk Vertigan
Generalized Δ-Y Exchange And K-Regular Matroids, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Dirk Vertigan
Faculty Publications
This paper introduces a generalization of the matroid operation of Δ-Y exchange. This new operation, segment-cosegment exchange, replaces a coindependent set of k collinear points in a matroid by an independent set of k points that are collinear in the dual of the resulting matroid. The main theorem of the first half of the paper is that, for every field, or indeed partial field, F, the class of matroids representable over F is closed under segment-cosegment exchanges. It follows that, for all prime powers q, the set of excluded minors for GF(q)-representability has at least 2q-4 members. In the second …

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Composites: Necessary Conditions And Sufficient Conditions, Yury Grabovsky, Graeme W. Milton, Daniel S. Sage
Faculty Publications
Typically the elastic and electrical properties of composite materials are strongly microstructure dependent. So it comes as a nice surprise to come across exact formulae for effective moduli that are universally valid no matter what the microstructure. Such exact formulae provide useful benchmarks for testing numerical and actual experimental data and for evaluating the merit of various approximation schemes. They can also be regarded as fundamental invariances existing in a given physical context. Classic examples include Hill's formulae for the effective bulk modulus of a two-phase mixture when the phases have equal shear moduli, Levin's formulae linking the effective thermal …
Lower Bounds For Two-Level Additive Schwarz Preconditioners With Small Overlap, Susanne C. Brenner
Lower Bounds For Two-Level Additive Schwarz Preconditioners With Small Overlap, Susanne C. Brenner
Faculty Publications
Lower bounds for the condition numbers of the preconditioned systems are obtained for two-level additive Schwarz preconditioners. They show that the known upper bounds for both second order and fourth order problems are sharp in the case of a small overlap.

Gravitational Radiation From Schwarzschild Black Holes: The Second-Order Perturbation Formalism, Reinaldo J. Gleiser, Carlos O. Nicasio, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
The perturbation theory of black holes has been useful recently for providing estimates of gravitational radiation from the black-hole collisions. Second-order perturbation theory, relatively undeveloped until recently, has proved to be important both for providing refined estimates and for indicating the range of validity of perturbation theory. Here we review the second-order formalism for perturbations of Schwarzschild spacetimes. The emphasis is on practical methods for carrying out the second-order computations of the outgoing radiation. General issues are illustrated throughout with examples from "close-limit" results, perturbation calculations in which black holes start from the small separation. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

We present the first simulations of non-headon (grazing) collisions of binary black holes in which the black hole singularities have been excised from the computational domain. Initially two equal mass black holes m are separated a distance ≈10m and with impact parameter ≈2m. Initial data are based on superposed, boosted (velocity ≈0.5c) solutions of single black holes in Kerr-Schild coordinates. Both rotating and non-rotating black holes are considered. The excised regions containing the singularities are specified by following the dynamics of apparent horizons. Evolutions of up to t≈35m are obtained in which two initially separate apparent horizons are present for …
Photodetachment In Combined Static And Dynamic Electric Fields, Chitra Rangan, A. P. Rau
Photodetachment In Combined Static And Dynamic Electric Fields, Chitra Rangan, A. P. Rau
Faculty Publications
Through an exact solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for an electron in a static electric field plus the time-dependent electric field of the detaching radiation, the photodetachment cross section of [Formula Presented] is calculated. Careful attention is paid to ensuring proper limiting behavior as the frequency of the time-dependent field goes to zero. We do not find observable effects of a cross term between the two fields on the detachment cross section. Our results point to possible gauge dependence and other difficulties of S-matrix formulations of multiphoton detachment and ionization. © 2000 The American Physical Society.
Similarity Analysis Of Nonlinear Equations And Bases Of Finite Wavelength Solitons, A. Ludu, G. Stoitcheva, J. P. Draayer
Similarity Analysis Of Nonlinear Equations And Bases Of Finite Wavelength Solitons, A. Ludu, G. Stoitcheva, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
We introduce a generalized similarity analysis which grants a qualitative description of the localised solutions of any nonlinear differential equation. This procedure provides relations between amplitude, width, and velocity of the solutions, and it is shown to be useful in analysing nonlinear structures like solitons, dublets, triplets, compact supported solitons and other patterns. We also introduce kink-antikink compact solutions for a nonlinear-nonlinear dispersion equation, and we construct a basis of finite wavelength functions having self-similar properties.
Arrangements And Local Systems, Daniel C. Cohen, Peter Orlik
Arrangements And Local Systems, Daniel C. Cohen, Peter Orlik
Faculty Publications
We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Aomoto complex of the arrangement. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. We also obtain lower bounds for the local system Betti numbers in terms …
The Voice Of The People: Reasons Laypersons Support K--12 Art Education., Lucienne Bond Simon
The Voice Of The People: Reasons Laypersons Support K--12 Art Education., Lucienne Bond Simon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the midst of generating theory for classrooms, philosophizing on the meaning and relevance of art education, determining policy and practices for classrooms, even providing advocacy literature in favor of art education, few references have been made to laypersons' ideas about art education. Lest the layperson (non-art education professional)---the "human element" [Pinar, Reynolds, Slattery, & Taubman, 1995, p. 102)---be overlooked, disregarded, and/or marginalized from considerations about art education, their ideas must be solicited, honored, and respected. Since the mission of art education is to educate future laypersons and not (necessarily) future artists, members of the profession as well as policymakers …
Regional Differences In Understanding Between Two Groups Of High School Science Students On A Complex Environmental Science Concept Known As The Dead Zone Of The Gulf Of Mexico: A Web -Based Approach., Sharon Ann Flanagan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The main research focus of this study was on the regional differences in understanding of two groups of high school science students for a complex environmental scientific phenomenon known as the Dead Zone of the Gulf of Mexico. Participating high school students were drawn from Dead Zone source and effect areas---Iowa chemistry students and Louisiana environmental science students. Students were given a pre- and postinstructional survey concerning environmental issues---including the issue of the Dead Zone or hypoxia of the Gulf of Mexico. The treatment group visited a web site on the Dead Zone constructed for this study, and interacted with …
Developing Students' Understanding Of Similar Figures: A Perceptual Approach., Danny Ray Mcnabb
Developing Students' Understanding Of Similar Figures: A Perceptual Approach., Danny Ray Mcnabb
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Children encounter and recognize similar figures in their everyday experiences with such things as basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls, ping-pong balls; or a candy bar that comes in various sizes of the same shape. Yet their school experience with the mathematics of similarity generally does not build on these perceptual intuitions. Traditional mathematics curricula bypass students' visual intuitions and their quantitative understandings, proceeding directly to set piece problems solved by formal algebraic methods. The result for many students is that the topic of similarity contributes to their evolving view of mathematics as a domain of complex procedural methods divorced from …

Models Of Professional Development For Teachers: Factors Influencing Technology Implementation In Elementary Schools., Marilyn Hill Catchings
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This qualitative multiple case study explored factors which contribute to the implementation of technology in elementary schools. This research had a phenomenological focus because there was a concentration on the structure and essence of the experiences of the teachers and leaders in the phenomenon, the implementation of technology in the school. The four schools chosen for the study were judged to have outstanding technology implementation by state technology leaders and a researcher screening process. They were selected because the researcher determined that these cases were the ones from which the most could be learned. These particular schools had ample technology …
Sociomathematical Norms Of Elementary School Classrooms: Crossnational Perspectives On The *Reform Of Mathematics Teaching., Jeongsuk Pang
Sociomathematical Norms Of Elementary School Classrooms: Crossnational Perspectives On The *Reform Of Mathematics Teaching., Jeongsuk Pang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mathematics education reform in the United States has marshaled large-scale support for instructional innovation, and enlisted the participation and allegiance of large numbers of mathematics teachers. However, there is concern that many teachers have not grasped the full implications of the reform ideals. This study explored the breakdown that may occur between teachers' adoption of reform objectives and their successful incorporation of reform ideals by comparing and contrasting two reform-oriented classrooms. This study was an exploratory, qualitative, comparative case study using constant comparative analysis. Seven mathematics lessons were video-taped from each class, and intensive interviews conducted with the two teachers. …
A Longitudinal Study Of Students Academic Achievement Change: A Multilevel Structural Equation Model From A Multiple Group Perspective., John Kipngeno Rugutt
A Longitudinal Study Of Students Academic Achievement Change: A Multilevel Structural Equation Model From A Multiple Group Perspective., John Kipngeno Rugutt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of this study was three-fold: First, to determine if the growth parameters (intercepts and slopes) in mathematics and language were related within domains and ethnicity. Second, to determine if the pattern of interrelationships among the individual achievement growth parameters were the same for African American and White students. Third, to establish whether there existed discernible patterns variability in academic growth parameters within each ethnicity over time. The study employed a three-wave longitudinal panel design, with data drawn from Louisiana State Department of Education. The data were then analyzed utilizing both a multilevel structural equation methodology and hierarchical linear …
Water Quality Model For Evaluation Of Nonpoint Source Impacts Of Rice Field Runoff., Elizabeth Deette Smythe
Water Quality Model For Evaluation Of Nonpoint Source Impacts Of Rice Field Runoff., Elizabeth Deette Smythe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Water quality impairment in many water bodies in the state of Louisiana is attributed to agricultural nonpoint sources of pollution. Many of these use-impaired streams have also been hydromodified to facilitate agricultural development, deepening and straightening the channels to form "stretch lakes". This dissertation evaluated the unique, and previously uncharacterized and unquantified ricefield loadings and their impacts on these dystrophic waterbodies in order to provide the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) with assessments of stream impacts from implementing altered cropping practices known as "best management practices" (BMPs). In order to produce an assessment of rice BMPs, this dissertation developed …
