Beta Transmutations In Apatites With Ferric Iron As An Electron Acceptor-Implication For Nuclear Waste Form Development, Ge Yao, Zelong Zhang, Jianwei Wang

© 2017 the Owner Societies. Apatite-structured materials have been considered for the immobilization of a number of fission products from reprocessing nuclear fuel because of their chemical durability as well as compositional and structural flexibility. It is hypothesized that the effect of beta decay on the stability can be mitigated by introducing an appropriate electron acceptor at the neighboring sites in the structure. The decay series 137Cs → 137Ba and 90Sr → 90Y → 90Zr were investigated using a spin-polarized DFT approach to test the hypothesis. Apatites with compositions of Ca10(PO4)6F2 and Ca4Y6(SiO4)6F2 were selected as model systems for the …
Local Alignment Of Ligand Binding Sites In Proteins For Polypharmacology And Drug Repositioning, Michal Brylinski
Local Alignment Of Ligand Binding Sites In Proteins For Polypharmacology And Drug Repositioning, Michal Brylinski
Faculty Publications
© Springer Science+Business Media LLC 2017. The administration of drugs is a key strategy in pharmacotherapy to treat diseases. Drugs are typically developed to modulate the function of specific proteins, which are directly associated with particular disease states. Nonetheless, recent studies suggest that protein-drug interactions are rather promiscuous and the majority of pharmaceuticals exhibit activity against multiple, often unrelated proteins. Certainly, the lack of selectivity often leads to drug side effects; on the other hand, these polypharmacological attributes can be used to develop drugs acting on multiple targets within a unique disease pathway, as well as to identify new targets …

The sugarcane aphid (Melanaphis sacchari) has become a serious pest causing severe economic losses to sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] grown in the southern United States. Since its original detection in four states in 2013, M. sacchari on sorghum has now, in 2016, spread to 19 states. The presence of one or multiple genotypes on sorghum in the United States has not yet been established. In this study, genome sequencing of M. sacchari was used to develop microsatellite markers. A total of 8,665,267 reads and 1.44 Gb of nucleotide sequences were generated, and 79.6% of the reads were from M. …

© 2017, Springer Science+Business Media New York. Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, shorelines throughout the Barataria Basin of the northern Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana were heavily oiled for months with Macondo-252 oil, potentially impacting estuarine species. The Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) has been identified as a sentinel species for the study of site-specific effects of crude oil contamination on biological function. In November and December 2010, 4–5 months after the Macondo well was plugged and new oil was no longer spilling into the Gulf waters, Gulf killifish were collected across the Barataria Basin from 14 sites with varying …

The implementation of minority research and training (MRT) programs at the post secondary level has risen to close the educational achievement gap and build undergraduate pathways to generate a highly skilled and diverse STEM pool. Although the numbers of advanced science related degrees have slowly increased over the past decade, partially due to the utilization of MRT programs, this increase has not been adequate to establish an impactful representation in either academic or industry research careers. Numerous studies identify various support interventions influencing positive outcomes among MRT participants achieving graduate degrees. However, majority of the studies utilize quantitative or a …

Posterior Estimates Of Dynamic Constants In Hiv Transmission Modeling, Yingqing Chen, Renee Dale, Hongyu He, Quoc Anh T. Le
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we construct a linear differential system in both continuous time and discrete time to model HIV transmission on the population level. The main question is the determination of parameters based on the posterior information obtained from statistical analysis of the HIV population. We call these parameters dynamic constants in the sense that these constants determine the behavior of the system in various models. There is a long history of using linear or nonlinear dynamic systems to study the HIV population dynamics or other infectious diseases. Nevertheless, the question of determining the dynamic constants in the system has …

Near-Martingale Property Of Anticipating Stochastic Integration, Chii Ruey Hwang, Hui Hsiung Kuo, Kimiaki Saitô, Jiayu Zhai
Faculty Publications
A stochastic process Xt is called a near-martingale with respect to a filtration {Ft} if E[Xt|Fs] = E[Xs|Fs] for all s ≤ t. It is called a near- submartingale with respect to {Ft} if E[Xt|Fs] ≥ E[Xs|Fs] for all s ≤ t. Near-martingale property is the analogue of martingale property when the Itô integral is extended to non-adapted integrands. We prove that Xt is a near-martingale (near-submartingale) if and only if E[Xt|Ft] is a martingale (near-submartingale, respectively). Doob-Meyer decomposition theorem is extended to near-submartingale. We study stochastic differential equations with anticipating initial conditions and obtain a relationship between such equations …
Creating Band Gaps In Periodic Media, Robert Lipton, Robert Viator
Creating Band Gaps In Periodic Media, Robert Lipton, Robert Viator
Faculty Publications
We identify explicit conditions on geometry and material contrast for creating band gaps in two-dimensional photonic and three-dimensional acoustic crystals. This approach is novel and makes use of the electrostatic and quasi-periodic source free resonances of the crystal. The source free modes deliver a spectral representation for solution operators associated with propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves inside periodic high contrast media. An accurate characterization of the quasi-periodic and electrostatic resonance spectrum in terms of the shape and geometry of the scatters is possible. This information together with the Dirichlet and a Neumann-like spectra associated with the inclusions deliver conditions …

Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence Ii: Classical Groups, Pramod N. Achar, Anthony Henderson, Daniel Juteau, Simon Riche
Faculty Publications
We construct a modular generalized Springer correspondence for any classical group, by generalizing to the modular setting various results of Lusztig in the case of characteristic-0 coefficients. We determine the cuspidal pairs in all classical types, and compute the correspondence explicitly for SL(n) with coefficients of arbitrary characteristic and for SO(n) and Sp(2n) with characteristic-2 coefficients.

Constructible Sheaves On Nilpotent Cones In Rather Good Characteristic, Pramod N. Achar, Anthony Henderson, Daniel Juteau, Simon Riche
Faculty Publications
We study some aspects of modular generalized Springer theory for a complex reductive group G with coefficients in a field k under the assumption that the characteristic ℓ of k is rather good for G, i.e. ℓ is good and does not divide the order of the component group of the centre of G. We prove a comparison theorem relating the characteristic-ℓ generalized Springer correspondence to the characteristic-0 version. We also consider Mautner’s characteristic-ℓ ‘cleanness conjecture’; we prove it in some cases; and we deduce several consequences, including a classification of supercuspidal sheaves and an orthogonal decomposition of the equivariant …

An A Posteriori Analysis Of C0 Interior Penalty Methods For The Obstacle Problem Of Clamped Kirchhoff Plates, Susanne C. Brenner, Joscha Gedicke, Li Yeng Sung, Yi Zhang
Faculty Publications
We develop an a posteriori analysis of C interior penalty methods for the displacement obstacle problem of clamped Kirchhoff plates. We show that a residual based error estimator originally designed for C interior penalty methods for the boundary value problem of clamped Kirchhoff plates can also be used for the obstacle problem. We obtain reliability and efficiency estimates for the error estimator and introduce an adaptive algorithm based on this error estimator. Numerical results indicate that the performance of the adaptive algorithm is optimal for both quadratic and cubic C interior penalty methods. 0 0 0

General Stieltjes Moment Problems For Rapidly Decreasing Smooth Functions, Ricardo Estrada, Jasson Vindas
Faculty Publications
We give (necessary and sufficient) conditions on a sequence {fn}∞n=0 of functions under which every generalized Stieltjes moment problem ∞{0 fn(x)φ(x) dx = an; n ∈ N; has solutions φ ∈ S(R) with supp φ ⊆ [0;∞). Furthermore, we consider more general problems of this kind for measure or distribution sequences {fn}∞n=0. We also study vector moment problems with values in Fréchet spaces and multidimensional moment problems.

Stability And Control Design For Time-Varying Systems With Time-Varying Delays Using A Trajectory-Based Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Silviu Iulian Niculescu
Faculty Publications
A recent work by Mazenc and Malisoff provides a trajectory-based approach for proving stability of time-varying systems with time-varying delays. Here, we provide several significant applications of their approach. In two results, we use a Lyapunov function for a corresponding undelayed system to provide a new method for proving stability of linear continuous-time time-varying systems with bounded time-varying delays. We allow uncertainties in the coefficient matrices of the systems. Our main results use upper bounds on an integral average involving the delay. The results establish input-to-state stability with respect to disturbances. We also provide a novel reduction model approach that …

Adaptive Planar Curve Tracking Control And Robustness Analysis Under State Constraints And Unknown Curvature, Michael Malisoff, Robert Sizemore, Fumin Zhang
Faculty Publications
We provide adaptive controllers for curve tracking in the plane, under unknown curvatures and control uncertainty, which is a central problem in robotics. The system dynamics include a nonlinear dependence on the curvature, and are coupled with an estimator for the unknown curvature, to form the augmented error dynamics. We prove input-to-state stability of the augmented error dynamics with respect to an input that is represented by additive uncertainty on the control, under polygonal state constraints and under suitable known bounds on the curvature and on the control uncertainty. When the uncertainty is zero, this gives tracking of the curve …
Gauge Invariants From The Powers Of Antipodes, Cris Negron, Siu Hung Ng
Gauge Invariants From The Powers Of Antipodes, Cris Negron, Siu Hung Ng
Faculty Publications
We prove that the trace of the n-th power of the antipode of a Hopf algebra with the Chevalley property is a gauge invariant, for each integer n. As a consequence, the order of the antipode, and its square, are invariant under Drinfeld twists. The invariance of the order of the antipode is closely related to a question of Shimizu on the pivotal covers of finite tensor categories, which we affirmatively answer for representation categories of Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property.
Exact Solution Of The Two-Axis Countertwisting Hamiltonian, Feng Pan, Yao Zhong Zhang, Jerry P. Draayer
Exact Solution Of The Two-Axis Countertwisting Hamiltonian, Feng Pan, Yao Zhong Zhang, Jerry P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
It is shown that the two-axis countertwisting Hamiltonian is exactly solvable when the quantum number of the total angular momentum of the system is an integer after the Jordan–Schwinger (differential) boson realization of the SU(2) algebra. Algebraic Bethe ansatz is used to get the exact solution with the help of the SU(1,1) algebraic structure, from which a set of Bethe ansatz equations of the problem is derived. It is shown that solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations can be obtained as zeros of the Heine–Stieltjes polynomials. The total number of the four sets of the zeros equals exactly 2J+1 for …
An Integrated System For Modeling Tree And Stand Survival, Quang V. Cao
An Integrated System For Modeling Tree And Stand Survival, Quang V. Cao
Faculty Publications
Traditionally, separate models have been used to predict the number of trees per unit area (stand-level survival) and the survival probability of an individual tree (tree-level survival) at a certain age. This study investigated the development of integrated systems in which survival models at different levels of resolution are related in a mathematical structure. Two approaches for modeling tree and stand survival were considered: deriving a stand-level survival model from a tree-level survival model (approach 1) and deriving a tree survival model from a stand survival model (approach 2). Both approaches rely on finding a tree diameter that yields a …

Modeling Tree Mortality In Relation To Climate, Initial Planting Density, And Competition In Chinese Fir Plantations Using A Bayesian Logistic Multilevel Method, Xiongqing Zhang, Quang V. Cao, Aiguo Duan, Jianguo Zhang
Faculty Publications
Tree mortality models are important tools for simulating forest dynamic processes, and logistic regression is widely used for modeling tree mortality. However, most of the mortality models that have been developed generally ignore the hierarchical structure. In this study, Bayesian logistic multilevel mortality models were developed with the independent variables of initial planting density, competition, site index, and climate factors in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) plantations in southern China. The results showed that a Bayesian three-level model was best for describing tree mortality data with multiple sources of unobserved heterogeneity compared to fixed-effects and two-level models. The variance …

We obtain explicit inversion formulas for the Radon-like transform that assigns to a function on the unit sphere the integrals of that function over hemispheres lying in lower-dimensional central cross-sections. The results are applied to the determination of star bodies from the volumes of their central half-sections.

A Finite Element Method For Nematic Liquid Crystals With Variable Degree Of Orientation, Ricardo H. Nochetto, Shawn W. Walker, Wujun Zhang
Faculty Publications
We consider the simplest one-constant model, put forward by J. Ericksen, for nematic liquid crystals with variable degree of orientation. The equilibrium state is described by a director field nn and its degree of orientation s, where the pair (s; n) minimizes a sum of Frank-like energies and a double well potential. In particular, the Euler-Lagrange equations for the minimizer contain a degenerate elliptic equation for n, which allows for line and plane defects to have finite energy. We present a structure preserving discretization of the liquid crystal energy with piecewise linear finite elements that can handle the degenerate elliptic …

Maize plants can be N-use efficient or N-stress tolerant. The first have high yields in favorable environments but is drastically affected under stress conditions; whereas the second show satisfactory yields in stressful environments but only moderate ones under optimal conditions. In this context, our aim was to assess the possibility of selecting tropical maize lines that are simultaneously N-stress tolerant and N-use efficient and check for differences between simultaneous selection statistical methods. Sixty-four tropical maize lines were evaluated for Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (NAE) and Low Nitrogen Tolerance (LNTI) response indices and two per se selection indices, Low Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency …

Denote by Ũ(p, q) the universal covering group of Ũ(p, q), the linear group of isometries of the pseudo-Hermitian space Cp,q of signature p, q. Let M be a connected analytic complete pseudo-Riemannian manifold that admits an isometric Ũ(p, q)-action and that satisfies dim M ≤ n(n + 2) where n = p + q. We prove that if the action of SU(p, q) (the connected derived group of eU(p, q)) has a dense orbit and the center of eU(p, q) acts non-trivially, then M is an isometric quotient of manifolds involving simple Lie groups with bi-invariant metrics. Furthermore, the …
