Ultrafast And Nonlinear Spectroscopy Of Nanomaterials, Rami Anthony Khoury Jul 2018

Ultrafast And Nonlinear Spectroscopy Of Nanomaterials, Rami Anthony Khoury

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ultrafast and nonlinear spectroscopies are implemented in the investigation of excited-state dynamics and structural properties of materials and nanomaterials. In the first study, the excited-state dynamics of size-dependent colloidal TiO2-Au nanocomposites are investigated using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The dynamics corresponding to the plasmon depletion band are characterized by electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling lifetimes that are observed to be independent of the gold nanocluster shell thickness. The excited-state dynamics corresponding to the interband transition of gold is also spectrally overlapped with the interfacial electron transfer lifetime, which is shown to decrease as the nanocluster shell thickness increases. In …

Conditional Decoupling Of Quantum Information, Mario Berta, Fernando G.S.L. Brandão, Christian Majenz, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

Insights from quantum information theory show that correlation measures based on quantum entropy are fundamental tools that reveal the entanglement structure of multipartite states. In that spirit, Groisman, Popescu, and Winter [Phys. Rev. A 72, 032317 (2005)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.72.032317] showed that the quantum mutual information I(A;B) quantifies the minimal rate of noise needed to erase the correlations in a bipartite state of quantum systems AB. Here, we investigate correlations in tripartite systems ABE. In particular, we are interested in the minimal rate of noise needed to apply to the systems AE in order to erase the correlations between A and B given …

Erepo-Orp: Exploring The Opportunity Space To Combat Orphan Diseases With Existing Drugs, Michal Brylinski, Misagh Naderi, Rajiv Gandhi Govindaraj, Jeffrey Lemoine

Faculty Publications

© 2017 About 7000 rare, or orphan, diseases affect more than 350 million people worldwide. Although these conditions collectively pose significant health care problems, drug companies seldom develop drugs for orphan diseases due to extremely limited individual markets. Consequently, developing new treatments for often life-threatening orphan diseases is primarily contingent on financial incentives from governments, special research grants, and private philanthropy. Computer-aided drug repositioning is a cheaper and faster alternative to traditional drug discovery offering a promising venue for orphan drug research. Here, we present eRepo-ORP, a comprehensive resource constructed by a large-scale repositioning of existing drugs to orphan diseases …

Re-Forming Educational Reform: An Oral History Of Three Louisiana Teachers, Ashley L. Seatter Jul 2018

Re-Forming Educational Reform: An Oral History Of Three Louisiana Teachers, Ashley L. Seatter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of educational reforms from 1983- 2014 through conducting oral histories with three Louisiana teachers. My research, as a postmodern and cultural feminist, was to interview and create a dialogue with three teachers; to find the intersection between school, reform and the meaning these give to their teaching life. I chose to interview teachers who are currently or close to retirement, who taught in a Louisiana accredited school system.

My focus was to investigate the lives of teachers, including their thoughts on educational reform changes during their tenure of teaching. Much …

Secondary transportation of raw and comminuted forest products is a major component in forest harvesting operations in terms of economics, public perception, and safety. Consequently, there is a substantial amount of literature on this topic. The existing literature has dealt with many of the technical aspects of transportation with a majority of them focusing on improving supply chain issues; however, there are only few specific to secondary transportation issues in general. This annotated bibliography will help practitioners, researchers, and stakeholders gain a better understanding of the existing literature from 2000 to 2015. To this end, we began by classifying the …

Sub-Shot-Noise-Limited Phase Estimation Via Su(1,1) Interferometer With Thermal States, Xiaoping Ma, Chenglong You, Sushovit Adhikari, Elisha S. Matekole, Ryan T. Glasser, Hwang Lee, Jonathan P. Dowling Jul 2018

Sub-Shot-Noise-Limited Phase Estimation Via Su(1,1) Interferometer With Thermal States, Xiaoping Ma, Chenglong You, Sushovit Adhikari, Elisha S. Matekole, Ryan T. Glasser, Hwang Lee, Jonathan P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with a thermal state and a squeezed vacuum state as inputs and parity detection as the measurement. We find that the phase sensitivity can beat the shot-noise limit and approaches the Heisenberg limit, with increasing input photon number, in an ideal situation. We also consider the e ect of various noises, including photon loss, dark counts, and thermal photon noise. Our results show that the phase sensitivity is below the shot-noise limit with photon loss and dark counts, but cannot beat the shot-noise limit in the presence of thermal noise.

Perils Of The Fungal Kingdom: Mycotoxins In Food And Feed, Adrianna Isobel Pribil

LSU Master's Theses

Humans and fungi have a complex relationship, especially in regards to the many fungal secondary metabolites that can be produced. When secondary metabolites are toxic to animals and humans they are defined as mycotoxins. Fungi can grow on crops pre-harvest and post-harvest, and have the potential to produce mycotoxins which occur regularly in animal feed and food for human consumption. In high doses, mycotoxins cause variety of problems that result in economic losses and extreme health issues. However, multiple mycotoxins will co-occur in nature and commonly occur in low doses. Thus chronic low daily doses of multiple mycotoxins overtime may …

Mathematics Course For Elementary Teachers In An Alternate Certification Pathway, Rachael Cramer Williams

LSU Master's Theses

In the current alternate certification program for elementary teachers at McNeese State University, students receive course work from only one of the elementary mathematics methods courses required in the traditional certification program. To assure that candidates in the alternate path learn all the math they need, I have created a course that combines the most important concepts from the two courses in one. In this thesis I will describe how the new course was designed, present an outline of the course, detail the content at the unit level and provide a template for the final exam.

Effects Of Natural And Anthropogenic Forcing On Marsh Channel Evolution, Jeremiah Robinson Jul 2018

Effects Of Natural And Anthropogenic Forcing On Marsh Channel Evolution, Jeremiah Robinson

LSU Master's Theses

Wetlands have many ecological and physical properties that are essential for coastal communities. These ecosystems sustain local economies, provide essential habitats, are a source of numerous ecological and biological services, and protect coastal populations from storms. Of the many wetland types, salt marshes are among the most vulnerable to environmental changes. Salt marshes quickly respond to natural and human-driven perturbations and their high rate of loss in the last century is cause for concern.

In this project the rate of marsh loss driven by channel widening was measured through a comparative analysis of modern high resolution images and historic aerial …

Nmr Structural Investigation Of Chlamydial Protein Complex And Lysine Glycomimetic For Drug Design, Abigael Chebichiy Songok

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research and design of drugs for treatment against microbial infections require the study of pathogenic proteins involved during infection and replication. Drugs can be designed to interfere with the interaction network of these pathogenic proteins and inhibit the infection process. Determination of the structure and ligands of the target proteins in microbes is essential for designing mechanistic-based drugs. Two Chlamydia proteins involved in host cell invasion were investigated in this study. The goal is to identify amino acids involved at the binding interface of Chlamydia chaperon proteins Scc1 and Scc4 by solution NMR spectroscopy. This information will give a lead …

An output-feedback decentralized optimal controller is proposed for power systems with renewable energy penetration. Renewable energy source is modeled similar to the classical generator model and is equipped with the unified power flow controller (UPFC). The transient performance of power system is considered and stability of the dynamical states are investigated. An offline decentralized optimal controller is designed that utilizes only the local states. The network comprises conventional synchronous generators as well as renewable sources with inverter equipped with UPFC. Subsequently, the optimal decentralized controller is compared to the initial stabilizing controller used to obtain the optimal controller. An online …

Modeling And Analysis Of Thermal Effects On A Fractured Wellbore During Lost Circulation And Wellbore Strengthening Processes, Ze Wang Jul 2018

Modeling And Analysis Of Thermal Effects On A Fractured Wellbore During Lost Circulation And Wellbore Strengthening Processes, Ze Wang

LSU Master's Theses

To successfully prevent fracture propagation and combat lost circulation, a thorough understanding of the stress state in the near-wellbore region with fractures is imperative. One important factor that is not yet fully understood is how temperature variation during lost circulation affects pre-existing or newly initiated fractures. To address this problem, a 3D finite element analysis was conducted in this study to simulate the transport processes and state of stresses in the near-wellbore region during mud invasion into fractures. To take the thermal effects into account, a thermo-poro-elasticity model was coupled with flow and heat transfer processes. This study included a …

Integrated Reservoir-Wellbore Nodal Analysis Workflow For Worst-Case Discharge Modeling, Florencia Anahi Vasquez Cordoba

LSU Master's Theses

According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), worst-case discharge (WCD) is the single highest possible daily flow rate of liquid hydrocarbon during an uncontrolled wellbore flow event [49]. The main objective of this research is to develop a workflow to calculate worst case discharge (WCD) volumes for a drilling scenario using an integrated reservoir-nodal analyses approach. Using robust integrated production modeling (IPM) tools, a nodal analysis workflow is developed to compute WCD volumes and rates that operators can use easily if they have IPM, or adapt to using a different software (including excel) in absence of IPM. A …

Despite advancements in the areas of parallel and distributed computing, the complexity of programming on High Performance Computing (HPC) resources has deterred many domain experts, especially in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), from utilizing performance benefits of such systems. Researchers and scientists favor high-productivity languages to avoid the inconvenience of programming in low-level languages and costs of acquiring the necessary skills required for programming at this level. In recent years, Python, with the support of linear algebra libraries like NumPy, has gained popularity despite facing limitations which prevent this code from distributed runs. Here we present …

Predicting River Stage Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Eric Rohli Jul 2018

Predicting River Stage Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Eric Rohli

LSU Master's Theses

River stage prediction is an important problem in the water transportation industry. Accurate river stage predictions provide crucial information to barge and tow boat operators, port terminal captains, and lock management officials. Shallow river levels caused by prolonged drought impact the loading capacity of barges and tow boats. High river levels caused by excessive rainfall or snowmelt allow for greater tow capacities but make downstream transportation and lock management risky. Current academic river height prediction systems utilize either time series statistical analysis or machine learning algorithms to forecast future river heights, but systems that combine these two areas often limit …

Groundwater And Thermal Legacy Of A Large Paleolake In Taylor Valley, East Antarctica As Evidenced By Airborne Electromagnetic And Sedimentological Techniques, Krista Falcon Myers Jul 2018

Groundwater And Thermal Legacy Of A Large Paleolake In Taylor Valley, East Antarctica As Evidenced By Airborne Electromagnetic And Sedimentological Techniques, Krista Falcon Myers

LSU Master's Theses

During the Last Glacial Maximum, grounded ice in the Ross Sea extended into the otherwise ice-free McMurdo Dry Valleys, creating a series of large ice dammed paleolakes. Grounded ice within the mouth of Taylor Valley allowed for lake levels to reach elevations not possible at modern day and formed what is known as Glacial Lake Washburn (GLW). GLW extended from the eastern portion of Taylor Valley roughly 20 km west to a level ~300 m higher than modern day Lake Fryxell. The formation and existence of GLW has been debated, though previous studies correlate the timing of GLW with early …

Curve Tracking Control Under State Constraints And Uncertainties, Robert Kelly Sizemore Jul 2018

Curve Tracking Control Under State Constraints And Uncertainties, Robert Kelly Sizemore

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We study a class of steering control problems for free-moving particles tracking a curve in the plane and also in a three-dimensional environment, which are central problems in robotics. In the two-dimensional case, we provide adaptive controllers for curve tracking under unknown curvatures and control uncertainty. The system dynamics include a nonlinear dependence on the curvature, and are coupled with an estimator for the unknown curvature to form the augmented error dynamics. This nonlinear dependence puts our curvature identification objective outside the scope of existing adaptive tracking and parameter identification results that were limited to cases where the unknown parameters …

In order to fulfill these purposes, two studies (a meta-analysis and an online survey) were conducted. The meta-analysis yielded 52 antecedents and 7 consequences. Ad-related perception, ad tactics, personal characteristics, ad exposure conditions, personal experiences, and demographic information were major categories of antecedents. Decreased cognitive abilities to recall and recognize ad messages were primary consequences of advertising avoidance. In addition, the survey found that …

Glimpses Of Space-Time Beyond The Singularities Using Supercomputers, Parampreet Singh Jul 2018

Glimpses Of Space-Time Beyond The Singularities Using Supercomputers, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

A fundamental problem of Einsteins theory of classical general relativity is the existence of singularities such as the big bang. All known laws of physics end at these boundaries of classical space-time. Thanks to recent developments in quantum gravity, supercomputers are now playing an important role in understanding the resolution of big bang and black hole singularities. Using supercomputers, explorations of the very genesis of space and time from quantum geometry are revealing a novel picture of what lies beyond classical singularities and the new physics of the birth of our universe.

We report a measurement of the flux-integrated cross section for inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon. The double-differential measurements are given as a function of the muon momentum and angle. Relative to our previous publication on this topic, these results have an increased angular acceptance and higher statistics. The data sample presented here corresponds to 5.7×1020 protons on target. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be (6.950±0.662)×10-39 cm2 nucleon-1 and is consistent with our simulation.

Estimating Epidemiological Parameters Of A Stochastic Differential Model Of Hiv Dynamics Using Hierarchical Bayesian Statistics, Renee Dale, Bei Bei Guo Jul 2018

Estimating Epidemiological Parameters Of A Stochastic Differential Model Of Hiv Dynamics Using Hierarchical Bayesian Statistics, Renee Dale, Bei Bei Guo

Faculty Publications

Current estimates of the HIV epidemic indicate a decrease in the incidence of the disease in the undiagnosed subpopulation over the past 10 years. However, a lack of access to care has not been considered when modeling the population. Populations at high risk for contracting HIV are twice as likely to lack access to reliable medical care. In this paper, we consider three contributors to the HIV population dynamics: at-risk population exhaustion, lack of access to care, and usage of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) by diagnosed individuals. An extant problem in the mathematical study of this system is deriving parameter estimates …

Discrete Bethe–Sommerfeld Conjecture, Rui Han, Svetlana Jitomirskaya Jul 2018

Discrete Bethe–Sommerfeld Conjecture, Rui Han, Svetlana Jitomirskaya

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we prove a discrete version of the Bethe–Sommerfeld conjecture. Namely, we show that the spectra of multi-dimensional discrete periodic Schrödinger operators on Zd lattice with sufficiently small potentials contain at most two intervals. Moreover, the spectrum is a single interval, provided at least one of the periods is odd, and can have a gap whenever all periods are even.

Large Deviation Principle For Stochastic Integrals And Stochastic Differential Equations Driven By Infinite-Dimensional Semimartingales, Arnab Ganguly Jul 2018

Large Deviation Principle For Stochastic Integrals And Stochastic Differential Equations Driven By Infinite-Dimensional Semimartingales, Arnab Ganguly

Faculty Publications

The paper concerns itself with establishing large deviation principles for a sequence of stochastic integrals and stochastic differential equations driven by general semimartingales in infinite-dimensional settings. The class of semimartingales considered is broad enough to cover Banach space-valued semimartingales and the martingale random measures. Simple usable expressions for the associated rate functions are given in this abstract setup. As illustrated through several concrete examples, the results presented here provide a new systematic approach to the study of large deviation principles for a sequence of Markov processes.

Primordial Power Spectrum From The Dapor–Liegener Model Of Loop Quantum Cosmology, Ivan Agullo Jul 2018

Primordial Power Spectrum From The Dapor–Liegener Model Of Loop Quantum Cosmology, Ivan Agullo

Faculty Publications

We compute the predictions for the power spectrum of scalar perturbations from a recent new proposal for the effective Hamiltonian of loop quantum cosmology. The model provides an attractive picture of the early cosmos, in which our classical Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker universe emerges from a quantum phase where the spacetime curvature remains constant and of Planckian size. We compare the predictions for the cosmic microwave background with previous results obtained within loop quantum cosmology, and discuss the differences and similarities. The analysis provides an example of the way differences between quantization schemes can be translated to physical observables.

Bounded Backstepping Control And Robustness Analysis For Time-Varying Systems Under Converging-Input-Converging-State Conditions, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Laurent Burlion, Jerome Weston Jul 2018

Bounded Backstepping Control And Robustness Analysis For Time-Varying Systems Under Converging-Input-Converging-State Conditions, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Laurent Burlion, Jerome Weston

We provide new bounded backstepping results that ensure global asymptotic stability for a large class of partially linear systems with an arbitrarily large number of integrators. We use a dynamic extension that contains one artificial delay, and a converging-input-converging-state assumption. When the nonlinear subsystem is control affine, we provide sufficient conditions for our converging-input-converging-state assumption to hold. We also show input-to-state stability with respect to a large class of model uncertainties, and robustness to delays in the measurements of the state of the nonlinear subsystem. We illustrate our result in a first example that has a nondifferentiable vector field and …

Rényi Relative Entropies Of Quantum Gaussian States, Kaushik P. Seshadreesan, Ludovico Lami, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

The quantum Rényi relative entropies play a prominent role in quantum information theory, finding applications in characterizing error exponents and strong converse exponents for quantum hypothesis testing and quantum communication theory. On a different thread, quantum Gaussian states have been intensely investigated theoretically, motivated by the fact that they are more readily accessible in the laboratory than are other, more exotic quantum states. In this paper, we derive formulas for the quantum Rényi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states. We consider both the traditional (Petz) Rényi relative entropy as well as the more recent sandwiched Rényi relative entropy, finding formulas …
