Women In Prison: A Study Of Social Relationships, Charlotte Mae Richardson Jan 1959

Women In Prison: A Study Of Social Relationships, Charlotte Mae Richardson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the preceding half century, sociologists have conducted an increasing number of studies of small informal groups; however, few social scientists have studied these phenomena among inmates in prison. Particularly is this true with regard to female inmates. This thesis seeks to present a sociological description of informal inmate groups, their leaders, and the isolates in a women's division of a state prison. It is hoped that the study will provide insight into possible hypotheses and methodological procedures for future research. The conclusions tend to support the findings of other social scientists who have written in this area. Non-participant observation, …

The Federal Occupation Of Natchez, Mississippi, 1863-1865, John Stanford Coussons Jun 1958

The Federal Occupation Of Natchez, Mississippi, 1863-1865, John Stanford Coussons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Natchez first glimpsed the Federals on May 12, 1862, when a part of Farragut's fleet appeared before the city. The unwelcome guests did not land and soon sailed upriver for Vicksburg. They reappeared permanently on July 13, 1863.

The Federal arrival was unopposed and uneventful except for a great increase in the Negro population. General Ransom, the Union commander, took particular care to prevent disorder.

City economy, suffering from the Union blockade, improved somewhat after occupation. Cotton was the all important item—when the Federals passed it through the lines business prospered. If the lines were closed depression and want resulted. …

Budgeting Techniques As Applied To Small Businesses, Jack Graydon Hudson May 1958

Budgeting Techniques As Applied To Small Businesses, Jack Graydon Hudson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The reasoning behind the reluctance of small businesses to utilize budgeting techniques is challenged in this thesis. Budget systems are used successfully by most larger concerns. The author believes that smaller organizations should investigate the feasibility of installing budgetary techniques in order to obtain similar beneficial results.

Current literature provides the basis for discussing the issues relating to budgeting and small businesses. The approach of adapting accepted techniques to smaller concerns is used. The advantages offered in the three phases of budgeting (planning, coordination and control) are introduced; limitations are also presented. Procedures for actual budget preparation, and responsibility, therefore, …
