A discussion of the Civil War and Reconstruction in Louisiana would not be complete without including the name of Jamas G. Taliaferro. Taliaferro, a prominent citizen from Harrisonburg, Louisiana, was a lawyer by profession, but was also involved in the politics of his area. After the death of his wife in 1850, lie devoted more time to politics and became active in state politics. In addition to being a lawyer and judge, he owned and edited the Harrisonburg Independent, the only newspaper in Catahoula Parish at this time.

In this study a descriptive analysis Is made of selected limitations on the organization of treatment at Louisiana State Penitentiary within the past approximate decade. Since 1t 1s concerned with a '*modern prison, the study Is applicable to most contemporary American prisons undergoing any phase of the transition from objectives of custody and production to that of treatment orientation. Throughout ascending and descending fixed‐ratio (FR) sequences, rats were allowed to terminate the FR stimulus control by pressing a time‐out (TO) lever. To minimize chance or accidental responses on this second lever, three presses were required to produce the 30‐sec SΔ period. As FR performance became more “strained,” there was an increased predisposition to escape from the time‐in stimulus complex. The generality of this finding was extended by obtaining recoverability (independent of the direction of stimulus change) of the FR‐TO function in the descending series.
