Essays On Economic Growth In India, Sujana Kabiraj
Essays On Economic Growth In India, Sujana Kabiraj
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation comprises of three distinct studies that contribute to the field of economic growth in India. First, we investigate patterns of growth at the district level (second level administrative units) using radiance calibrated night lights data for 2000-2010. We examine growth both at the aggregated district level, as well as along the rural and urban dimensions. We find evidence of both absolute and conditional convergence, with convergence among rural areas being the primary driver. However, there is no evidence of convergence among urban areas. Moving further along similar lines, we explore the effect of credit shocks, generated by scheduled …
Ports Resilience Index: Participatory Methods To Assess Resilience, Lauren L. Morris
Ports Resilience Index: Participatory Methods To Assess Resilience, Lauren L. Morris
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Many hazard threats challenge the uninterrupted operation of the maritime transportation system across multiple temporal and spatial scales. Environmental hazard threats include hurricanes, storm surge, and sea-level rise. Resilience begins at the port, which provides the physical, economic, and social connection between sea and land transportation users. Ports function through port authorities, composed of people with decision-making abilities, which causes port resilience to be a complex process to understand. The paucity of metrics to quantify port resilience warrants other methods to study this place-specific topic. The goal of the Ports Resilience Index (PRI) project centered on the development of a …
Grounds For Displacement: Issues Of Migration On Louisiana's Disappearing Coast, Jessica Rose Simms
Grounds For Displacement: Issues Of Migration On Louisiana's Disappearing Coast, Jessica Rose Simms
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research inquiry engages with residents from three Louisiana parishes who have already or are currently facing possible migration decisions. The research focuses on understanding the links among the influence and mobility of three factors: social relations (i.e., faith-based networks, civic organizations, family, cultural and heritage identities, etc.), inherent resilient practices, and place, including sense of and attachment to it. It will draw from those bodies of literature as well as environmental migration literature, while underscoring that decisions of migration are influenced by environmental factors, but ultimately shaped by a complexity of often simultaneous forces, including social, political-economic, and cultural …

Immigration, Ethnicity, And Citizenship: The Words And Faces Of The Chinese Of North America, Pengyi Huang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I have analyzed the migrant experience of Chinese immigrants in North America through their representation in literature and photography. Each of its three chapters focuses on three major ethnic issues affecting the lives and identity of Chinese immigrants and their offspring in North America: the first concerns the ways in which occupation, home, and family affect the destinies of Chinese immigrants; the second deals with the role of language in the lives of Chinese immigrants and the career of Chinese migrant writers; the third addresses stereotypes about Chinese immigrants and their offspring and the redefinition of their …
Sediment Transport And Channel Morphology Dynamics Of Highly Regulated Alluvial Rivers - A Case Study Of The Lowermost Mississippi River., Sanjeev Joshi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Mississippi River delta is facing severe land loss. An urgent need exists to examine sediment transport and channel morphology dynamics along this highly engineered alluvial river that has shaped and will continue to shape its delta. This dissertation research focuses on investigating channel morphology dynamics and sediment transport in the recent three decades along a 327-km reach (from about 492 to 167 km upstream from the river’s outlet in the Gulf of Mexico) of the Lowermost Mississippi River (LmMR). The specific objectives of this research were to: 1) analyze riverbed adjustment, i.e., channel-bed aggradation or channel erosion at seven …

Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Louisiana Land Subsidence Using High-Resolution Geo-Spatial Data, Hanyu Xiang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Land subsidence, defined as a land sinking or a gradual inward caving of land, presents a common disturbance observed in many areas of the world. In Louisiana, this specific problem posed a serious threat to the populace living there. Considered by denizens to be an adverse impact of land use, the extant Louisiana subsidence causes serious problems that tend to worsen, such as excessive wetland formation or land loss. Unless researchers find appropriate treatments to address this increasingly serious problem, the present issues will be exacerbated. To visualize the spatio-temporal subsidence patterns, this study used data collected by high-precision GPS …

Ecosystem models have difficulty predicting plant drought responses, partially from uncertainty in the stomatal response to water deficits in soil and atmosphere. We evaluate a ‘supply–demand’ theory for water-limited stomatal behavior that avoids the typical scaffold of empirical response functions. The premise is that canopy water demand is regulated in proportion to threat to supply posed by xylem cavitation and soil drying. The theory was implemented in a trait-based soil–plant–atmosphere model. The model predicted canopy transpiration (E), canopy diffusive conductance (G), and canopy xylem pressure (Pcanopy) from soil water potential (Psoil) and vapor pressure deficit (D). Modeled responses to D …

Groundwater recharge from rainstorms can be vital for regional water resources. With the expansion of the need for more water in some specific regions under global climate change, groundwater is being pumped at a far greater rate than it can be naturally replenished. Considering that excess rainstorms could be utilized for groundwater recharge to lessen the declining tendency of regional groundwater level in the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China, we analyzed groundwater changes in the quantity of a regional shallow aquifer in the region following extreme rainfall in 2013. The results show that shallow groundwater table in the north and central …

Message from President: When November opens the calendrical gateway to the holidays, Thanksgiving, the holiday nominally devoted to appreciation, draws attention to the question of gratitude. Faculty members live, move, and have their being in the sphere of gratitude. These talented people, whose aptitudes would qualify them for a thousand high-paying careers, set aside lucrative opportunities in order to celebrate the bounty of knowledge. Even during the most depressing moments of an academic career—even despite excessive workloads, deteriorating facilities, and budget shortfalls—faculty members quietly applaud, through their service, the implicit generosity of a universe that not only makes itself interpretable, …

© 2016 The Author(s) 2016. Extreme climate and weather events, such as a drought, hurricanes, or ice storms, can strongly imprint ecosystem processing and may alter ecosystem structure. Ecosystems in extreme environments are particularly vulnerable because of their adaptation to severe limitations in energy, water, or nutrients. The vulnerability can be expressed as a relatively long-lasting ecosystem response to a small or brief change in environmental conditions. Such an event occurred in Antarctica and affected two vastly different ecosystems: a marine-dominated coastal system and a terrestrial polar desert. Both sites experienced winds that warmed air temperatures above the 0°C threshold, …

The Songhua River Basin (SRB) in Northeast China is one of the areas most sensitive to global climate change because of its high-latitude location. In this study, we conducted a modeling assessment on the potential change of water resources in this region for the coming three decades using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). First, we calibrated and validated the model with historical streamflow records in this basin. Then, we applied the calibrated model for the period from 2020 to 2049 with the projected and downscaled climatic data under two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The study …

Joint assessment of groundwater-surface water resources can help develop sustainable regional water management plans for intensive agriculture. In this study, we estimated allowable groundwater and surface water quantities using a water balance model, WetSpass-GMS, for the Sanjiang Plain (10.9 × 104 km2), one of the most important grain production bases in China. We then applied a double control based on the groundwater availability and the concept of an ecologically ideal shallow groundwater depth (EISGD) to three different water use scenarios: (A) continuation of the current water use management; (B) maximal use of water resources under a double control; and (C) …

© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS. Identifying drivers of infectious disease patterns and impacts at the broadest scales of organisation is one of the most crucial challenges for modern science, yet answers to many fundamental questions remain elusive. These include what factors commonly facilitate transmission of pathogens to novel host species, what drives variation in immune investment among host species, and more generally what drives global patterns of parasite diversity and distribution? Here we consider how the perspectives and tools of macroecology, a field that investigates patterns and processes at broad spatial, temporal and taxonomic scales, are expanding scientific …

This article presents an explorative analysis of community resilience to seismic hazard in the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake area of Southwest China. We used a regression model to analyze the impact of 13 key socioeconomic and demographic variables on community resilience in 105 counties, based on data derived from population census and provincial statistical yearbooks of China. In this research, we argue that community resilience should be measured by the change of population growth rate (Δdp) instead of population growth rate (dp) when using socioeconomic data from a fast-growing country such as China. Using Δdp as the dependent variable resulted in …

The Antarctic ice sheet topography including elevation and slope is a key parameter for understanding ice sheet dynamics because the surface slope is a major controller of the ice flow gravitational driving stress magnitude. This study used Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry data to analyze the ice margin morphological parameters for 20 ice shelves and 12 outlet glaciers distributed over Antarctica. The bottom-up segmentation algorithm application effectively extracted the morphological parameters from the laser altimetry profiles. The ice shelves had an average boundary elevation of 29.5 m and a slope of 7.8°, with a decreasing surface …

Background: Access to sanitation facilities is imperative in reducing the risk of multiple adverse health outcomes. A distinct disparity in sanitation exists among different wealth levels in many low-income countries, which may hinder the progress across each of the Millennium Development Goals. Methods: The surveyed households in 397 clusters from 2008-2009 Kenya Demographic and Health Surveys were divided into five wealth quintiles based on their national asset scores. A series of spatial analysis methods including excess risk, local spatial autocorrelation, and spatial interpolation were applied to observe disparities in coverage of improved sanitation among different wealth categories. The total number …

© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Aim: Plant species co-occur within communities in response to variation in environmental conditions, limited species dispersal and biotic interactions. We used surveys and resurveys of the same sites of three temperate forest plant communities to study patterns of association between co-occurring species pairs and to infer how these mechanisms contribute to community assembly. Our goal was to compare these forces among communities occupying more and less disturbed landscapes and examine how these have changed over the last 50 years. Location: Wisconsin, USA. Methods: We resurveyed 266 sites first surveyed in the 1950s to …

The taxonomic status of the red Wolf (Canis rufus) is heavily debated, but could be clarified by examining historic specimens from the southeastern United States. We analyzed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 3 ancient (350-1900 year olds) putative Wolf samples excavated from middens and sinkholes within the historic red Wolf range. We detected 3 unique mtDNA haplotypes, which grouped with the coyote mtDNA clade, suggesting that the canids inhabiting southeastern North America prior to human colonization from Europe were either coyotes, which would vastly expand historic coyote distributions, an ancient coyote-Wolf hybrid, or a North American evolved red Wolf lineage related …

© 2016 Nordic Society Oikos. The understanding of the diversity and distribution of helminth parasites is currently constrained by the limited number of host-parasite interaction databases, and the difficulty in accessing existing data. The London Natural History Museum's Host-Parasite Database represents one such underutilized database, containing over a quarter million helminth parasite occurrence records, accessible through a web interface. To enable users to programmatically search and manipulate data from this database, I developed an R package called helminthR. Here, I introduce the core functions of the package, and detail how helminthR can be used to obtain host-parasite interaction records, citations …
