Sustainable Gardening For School And Home Gardens: Sustainable Gardening Planting Guide, Johannah Frelier, Denyse Cummins, Carl Motsenbocker Nov 2021

Sustainable Gardening For School And Home Gardens: Sustainable Gardening Planting Guide, Johannah Frelier, Denyse Cummins, Carl Motsenbocker

Sustainable Gardening for School and Home Gardens

How to use this guide: 1) Find your crop 2) If your crop is within the proper planting times for success, decide if you will direct seed or grow or buy transplants. Time required for producing transplants is given in weeks, as is how deep to plant if seeding in the field or trays and how far apart to put plants or seeds from neighbors within a row or the distance from rows of like plants. Days to Harvest informs when to expect to pick the first vegetable from a direct seeded or transplanted crop (in parentheses). Knowing the Plant …

Effects Of Cover Crops On Beetle Assemblages In Tea Plantations, Li Lin Chen, Gabor Pozsgai, Xiang Yu Li, Lei Li, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Min Sheng You Nov 2021

Effects Of Cover Crops On Beetle Assemblages In Tea Plantations, Li Lin Chen, Gabor Pozsgai, Xiang Yu Li, Lei Li, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Min Sheng You

Faculty Publications

Coleoptera are visible members of food webs in tea plantations, with high species richness and abundance. Many tea pests, as well as natural enemies, are members of this order, so a knowledge of how groundcovers affect beetles can aid pest management. We collected beetles in a replicated field experiment in the Wuyi Mountains, Fujian Province, China. Tea was intercropped with Paspalum notatum or Chamaecrista rotundifolia, or rows were cleared to bare ground, or in the control they were left unmanaged to allow weeds to grow naturally. Sampling, done by sweep netting and vegetation beating, was conducted monthly, between May 2006 …

Background: Systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) have proliferated with a concomitant increase in reviews of SRs/MAs or “meta-reviews” (MRs). As uncovered by the 2018 US Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee (PAGAC), there is a paucity of best practice guidance on MRs on physical activity health-related research. This manuscript aims to fill this gap. Methods: In total, the PAGAC conducted 38 literature searches across 3 electronic databases and triaged 20,838 titles, 4913 abstracts, and 2139 full texts from which 1130 articles qualified for the PAGAC Scientific Report. Results: During the MR process, the following challenges were encountered: (1) if the …

Connecting And Communicating: The Activation Of Middle School Parents As Learning Coaches For Ela Classrooms In Online Charter Schools, Lillie Connor-Flores Oct 2021

Connecting And Communicating: The Activation Of Middle School Parents As Learning Coaches For Ela Classrooms In Online Charter Schools, Lillie Connor-Flores

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, K-12 online charter schools have seen increased enrollment as parents and guardians seek alternate options for educating their children. Online schools provide opportunities for flexibility, individualization, and continuous learning when in-person learning is not available. However, research on K-12 online schooling is currently minimal despite enrollment. Further, little to no research explores middle school online students or delves into the stakeholders who support students. Some online schools have employed a Learning coach—an adult assigned to work with a student at home. Learning coaches can be an asset for engaging learning. The researcher asks the following questions: How …

Assessment Of Cash Value Benefits And The Effects On Participant Vegetable Consumption In The Louisiana Wic Program, Celia Rene Bridgeforth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). The WIC program serves low-income women, infants, and children by providing supplemental foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and promotion, and referrals to healthcare and social service programs (Oliveira & Frazão, 2015). Revisions of the WIC food packages to include cash value benefits (CVB) that provided WIC participants the opportunity to purchase fruits and vegetables with their WIC benefits. There is significant research that indicates the benefit of F.V. consumption and the impact on diet-related …

The Young Black Girl: A Narration Of Stem Identity Through Science Origin In Elementary School, Heather F. Lavender Oct 2021

The Young Black Girl: A Narration Of Stem Identity Through Science Origin In Elementary School, Heather F. Lavender

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An ethnographic qualitative case study was conducted by examining the perceptions of two 5th grade Black girls at an independent school about their involvement with school science, the impact of race and gender towards their perception, and the influence of teachers, peers, and family on their science identity. Black girls are often relegated to outsider status within the classroom, lacking power and authority, which results in Black girls being denied a rightful presence in their learning community (Dumas & Ross, 2016). Additionally, their presence in STEM careers does not reflect their presence nationwide (Graves et al., 2014). The proposed …

A Polynomial Roth Theorem For Corners In Finite Fields, Rui Han, Michael T. Lacey, Fan Yang Oct 2021

A Polynomial Roth Theorem For Corners In Finite Fields, Rui Han, Michael T. Lacey, Fan Yang

Faculty Publications

We prove a Roth-type theorem for polynomial corners in the finite field setting. Let ϕ1 and ϕ2 be two polynomials of distinct degree. For sufficiently large primes p, any subset (Formula presented.) with (Formula presented.) contains three points (Formula presented.). The study of these questions on (Formula presented.) was started by Bourgain and Chang. Our Theorem adapts the argument of Dong, Li, and Sawin, in particular relying upon deep Weil-type inequalities established by N. Katz.

A vast body of evidence regarding eHealth interventions for nutrition, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and obesity exists. This scoping review of systematic reviews aimed to evaluate the current level of evidence in this growing field. Seven electronic databases were searched for systematic reviews published until October 27, 2019. The systematic reviews must have included adult participants only and have evaluated eHealth behavioral interventions with the primary aim of changing nutrition, physical activity, and sedentary behavior or treating or preventing overweight and obesity. One hundred and six systematic reviews, published from 2006 to 2019, were included. Almost all (n = 98) …

The Inverse Problem For A Spectral Asymmetry Function Of The Schrödinger Operator On A Finite Interval, B. Malcolm Brown, Karl Michael Schmidt, Stephen P. Shipman, Ian Wood

Faculty Publications

For the Schrödinger equation (Formula presented.) on a finite x-interval, there is defined an “asymmetry function” (Formula presented.), which is entire of order 1/2 and type 1 in λ. Our main result identifies the classes of square-integrable potentials (Formula presented.) that possess a common asymmetry function (Formula presented.). For any given (Formula presented.), there is one potential for each Dirichlet spectral sequence.

Isotopic Fingerprints Of Mountain Uplift And Global Cooling In Paleoclimatic And Paleoecological Records From The Northern Tibetan Plateau, Mingqiu Hou, Guangsheng Zhuang, Minghao Wu

Faculty Publications

Post-middle Miocene changes in climate and ecology in the northern Tibetan Plateau have been attributed to tectonic uplift and global climate change. However, the relative roles of tectonism and global climate change have been a long-standing debate. To untangle the complex influences of global climate change versus the tectonism on regional climate and ecology in the northern Tibetan Plateau, we studied carbon isotopes (δ13Cwax) of leaf wax long-chain n-alkanes and carbon (δ13C) and oxygen isotopes (δ18O) of carbonates from three stratigraphic successions (ca. 16 Ma to 2 Ma) in the Hexi Corridor (foreland basin) …

Offerings, Diana C. Patin Sep 2021

Offerings, Diana C. Patin

LSU Master's Theses

These photographs and writing are a set of offerings, collected as part of an intensive examination of myself and my contentious relationship with self-image. I first established which traits in my personality represent me best. I landed on my fatness, my queerness, my southernness, and my penchant for caring. Then I took a deep dive into each of those four themes with the objective of uncovering both the areas of exaltation and spaces of hurt within them. The images that result are both confrontational and gentle. It is my hope that the uncompromising honesty within these offerings communicates that while …

Background: Previously, young males administered 200 mg/week of testosterone enanthate during 28 days of energy deficit (EDef) gained lean mass and lost less total mass than controls (Optimizing Performance for Soldiers I study, OPS I). Despite that benefit, physical performance deteriorated similarly in both groups. However, some experimental limitations may have precluded detection of performance benefits, as performance measures employed lacked military relevance, and the EDef employed did not elicit the magnitude of stress typically experienced by Soldiers conducting operations. Additionally, the testosterone administered required weekly injections, elicited supra-physiological concentrations, and marked suppression of endogenous testosterone upon cessation. Therefore, this …

Cage's Imitation Game: Cheap Imitation And Song Books Through The Sketches, Jeffrey Perry Sep 2021

Cage's Imitation Game: Cheap Imitation And Song Books Through The Sketches, Jeffrey Perry

Faculty Publications

The theme of John Cage’s Song Books (1970), according to Cage, is contained in the statement “We connect Satie with Thoreau” (Cage 1970a, 1). Previous studies of Cage’s Song Books have not asked what I feel to be obvious questions: how, precisely, does Cage connect Satie with Thoreau? To what end? And how does Cage connect to Satie and Thoreau (and to the other sources from which he borrows)? I make use of Cage’s sketch materials to seek answers. I examine three of the Solos for Voice from Song Books that make use of the cheap-imitation procedure that Cage had …

Understanding The Etiology Of Taproot Decline Of Soybean Caused By Xylaria Necrophora, José E. Ortiz Solórzano Aug 2021

Understanding The Etiology Of Taproot Decline Of Soybean Caused By Xylaria Necrophora, José E. Ortiz Solórzano

LSU Master's Theses

Taproot decline (TRD) of soybean is caused by Xylaria necrophora. However, the mechanisms by which it infects soybean and produces symptoms are unknown. Symptoms of TRD include foliar interveinal chlorosis and necrosis and root necrosis, yet X. necrophora appears to be restricted to the roots. While Xylaria species are predominantly wood decomposers, a few are pathogens. More importantly, they produce secondary metabolites (SMs) with multiple bioactivities, including phytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity. Preliminary experiments suggested that X. necrophora was producing SMs responsible for TRD symptoms. We evaluated cell-free culture filtrates (CFs) for phytotoxicity on soybeans, testing for changes in chlorophyll …
