Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified common variants that are associated with a variety of traits and diseases, but most studies have been performed in European-derived populations. Here, we describe the first genome-wide analyses of imputed genotype and copy number variants (CNVs) for anthropometric measures in African-derived populations: 1188 Nigerians from Igbo-Ora and Ibadan, Nigeria, and 743 African-Americans from Maywood, IL. To improve the reach of our study, we used imputation to estimate genotypes at ~2.1 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and also tested CNVs for association. No SNPs or common CNVs reached a genome-wide significance level for association with height …

Message from the President: For the last several months, members of the extended LSU community have hopped from big issue to big issue, from hope to fear to anxiety, and on to occasional relief. Although the very big issue of the higher education budget will occupy us for months to come, it is important to remember the many smaller items that support or otherwise accumulate into the gigantic challenges that we face today. So it is that, in the wake of the Louisiana Postsecondary Review Council, with its disappointing recommendation that all four year institutions capitulate to a single “superboard,” …

Clay Mineral Evolution In The Central Okinawa Trough Since 28 Ka: Implications For Sediment Provenance And Paleoenvironmental Change, Yanguang Dou, Shouye Yang, Zhenxia Liu, Peter D. Clift, Hua Yu, Serge Berne, Xuefa Shi

The Okinawa Trough is a natural laboratory for the study of later Quaternary land-ocean interaction and paleoenvironmental changes. In this study we reconstruct the evolution of clay mineral assemblages in Core DGKS9604 retrieved from the central Okinawa Trough. Illite dominates the clay mineral compositions, with average contents above 60%. Clay mineral evolution since 28 ka is closely related to changes in sediment provenance and paleoenvironment. Sea level rise and the strength of the Kuroshio Current control the dispersal and deposition of clays on the East China Sea shelf and in the Okinawa Trough, and thus, determine the clay mineral compositions …

Message from President: This second issue of the Faculty Senate Newsletter comes with thanks for the favorable reception offered to the first installment. Already the breadth and variety of offerings is growing. This month, we add an“Education Opinion” area. All colleagues are invited to submit letters or brief statements of opinion on matters of academic or institutional policy. This issue of the newsletter also introduces reportage by our graduate assistants, Greg Molchan and Casey Kayser, who covered the recent Faculty Senate-Chancellor Forum, and continues our monthly “Administrator in the Spotlight”feature. Readers of this issue will discover a wide range of …

Gumbo Yearbook, Class Of 2010, Louisiana State University And Agricultural And Mechanical College
Gumbo Yearbook
The Gumbo yearbook chronicles the entire academic year at LSU. In words and especially photos, the Gumbo shows the people, places, and events that make each year unique. In addition to formal portraits of schools and departments, the book contains hundreds of snapshots of students with their friends and dozens of pages showcasing organizations.
The 2010 Gumbo was published with a DVD containing a video yearbook, as well as a PDF. Those files are linked below.
Renegotiating Barbuda's Commons: Recent Changes In Barbudan Open-Range Cattle Herding, Andrew Sluyter, Amy E. Potter
Renegotiating Barbuda's Commons: Recent Changes In Barbudan Open-Range Cattle Herding, Andrew Sluyter, Amy E. Potter
Faculty Publications
Barbuda remains little developed and sparsely populated relative to its neighbors in the Leeward Lesser Antilles, a rather extraordinary and relatively unknown Caribbean place. Much of its distinctiveness derives from the communal land-tenure system, itself rooted in three centuries of open-range cattle herding. Yet, as revealed through interviews, newspaper archives, and landscape observations, openrange cattle herding has declined over the past three decades, with related changes in land tenure. As the new Barbuda Land Act came into effect in 2008, codifying the communal tenure system, the very landscape elements that manifest open-range herding have become obscure. In particular, the rock-walled …

The Hispanic Atlantic's Tasajo Trail, Andrew Sluyter
Faculty Publications
Produced along the Río de la Plata during the nineteenth century, shipped to Havana, and consumed by African slaves, the salt-cured beef known as tasajo affected both of those places and, to some degree, the Atlantic world in general. Initial exploration of the tasajo trail that connected Buenos Aires and Cuba employs primary sources such as nineteenth-century descriptions and shipping records to characterize the landscapes, places, routes, and agents of the largely unexplored research territory of that anomalous commodity: one that, unlike others such as sugar, slaves not only produced but also consumed; one that underpinned more prominent, latitudinal transatlantic …
A Phylogenetic Approach To Disentangling The Role Of Competition And Habitat Filtering In Community Assembly Of Neotropical Forest Birds, Juan Pablo Gómez, Gustavo A. Bravo, Robb T. Brumfield, José G. Tello, Carlos Daniel Cadena
Faculty Publications
Methods that assess patterns of phylogenetic relatedness, as well as character distribution and evolution, allow one to infer the ecological processes involved in community assembly. Assuming niche conservatism, assemblages should shift from phylogenetic clustering to evenness with decreasing geographic scale because the relative importance of mechanisms that shape assemblages is hypothesized to be scale-dependent. Whereas habitat filtering is more likely to act at regional scales because of increased habitat heterogeneity that allows sorting of ecologically similar species in contrasting environments, competition is more likely to act at local scales because low habitat heterogeneity provides few opportunities for niche partitioning. We …

Draganski And Schafer: A Perspective On Works For Voice And Woodwind Quintet, Susan Elizabeth Ruggiero
Draganski And Schafer: A Perspective On Works For Voice And Woodwind Quintet, Susan Elizabeth Ruggiero
LSU Major Papers
The purpose of this document is to explore the relationship between voice and woodwind quintet by examining two prominent multi-movement works in the repertoire, Minnelieder: Love Songs from the Medieval German for mezzo soprano and wind quintet by R. Murray Schafer and Six Songs on Mother Goose Rhymes for soprano and woodwind by Donald Draganski. A secondary aim is to impart greater awareness and understanding of works for voice and woodwind quintet. Music for this combination is largely unknown and neglected, yet this subgenre of vocal chamber music has several works by twentieth and twenty-first century composers worthy of attention. …
