Profundulus Kreiseri, A New Species Of Profundulidae (Teleostei, Cyprinodontiformes) From Northwestern Honduras, Wilfredo A. Matamoros, Jacob F. Schaefer, Carmen L. Hernández, Prosanta Chakrabarty
Faculty Publications
A new species of Profundulus, P. kreiseri (Cyprinodontiformes: Profundulidae), is described from the Chamelecón and Ulúa Rivers in the northwestern Honduran highlands. Based on a phylogenetic analysis using cytochrome b and the presence of synapomorphic characters (dark humeral spot, a scaled preorbital region and between 32-34 vertebrae), this new species is placed in the subgenus Profundulus, which also includes P. (P.) oaxacae, P. (P.) punctatus and P. (P.) guatemalensis. Profundulus kreiseri can be distinguished from other members of the subgenus Profundulus by having less than half of its caudal fin densely scaled. Profundulus kreiseri can further be differentiated from P. …

Message from President: “Diversity” is one of those words that can carry diverse meanings. As one story in this issue of the Newsletter reports, LSU A&M’s diversity office is making a salutary move by the introduction, in its annual report, of numerous colorful icons representing the many diversities that the world has to offer. That modern, dispersed diversity contrasts with the more centripetal sort that attracted attention earlier in Louisiana’s history, when higher education institutions sought primarily and specifically to remedy past injustices through outreach to African-American student and faculty cadres. The flexibility of the term “diversity” comes in handy …

Message from President: T. S. Eliot brooded that the world might end not with a bang but with a whimper. The new academic year, far from commencing with the sense of optimism that often accompanies a new tour of scholarly duty, is opening with a whimper in fearful anticipation of a bang: with the accumulated burden of several disappointing years and the fear that some greater calamity might erupt at any moment. As the annual parade of welcome messages pours from the electronic inkwells of assorted campus and system leaders, it might be time to look at those areas in …

Latinos (Research Report #115), Amanda D. Cawley, Mark J. Schafer, Troy Blanchard
LSU AgCenter Research Reports
This first review in this series focused on various racial and ethnic groups in the Gulf of Mexico region explores the experiences of Latinos -- a group that has gained significant local and national attention over the past 20 years as the number of Latinos residing in the area, and in the nation, has drastically increased.

A Generalization Of The Mader-Helgason Inversion Formulas For Radon Transforms, Y. A. Antipov, B. Rubin

In 1927, Philomena Mader derived elegant inversion formulas for the hyperplane Radon transform on ℝ n. These formulas differ from the original ones by Radon and seem to be forgotten. We generalize Mader's formulas to totally geodesic Radon transforms in any dimension on arbitrary constant curvature space. Another new interesting inversion formula for the k-plane transform was presented in the recent book "Integral geometry and Radon transform" by S. Helgason. We extend this formula to arbitrary constant curvature space. The paper combines tools of integral geometry and complex analysis. © 2012 American Mathematical Society.

Background: The pathway-focused association approach offers a hypothesis driven alternative to the agnostic genome-wide association study. Here we apply the pathway-focused approach to an association study of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in 1614 Nigerians with genome-wide data. Methods and Results: Testing of 28 pathways with biological relevance to hypertension, selected a priori, containing a total of 101 unique genes and 4,349 unique single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed an association for the adrenergic alpha 1 (ADRA1) receptor pathway with hypertension (pp>10-5) SNPs offers a novel method for detecting the "missing heritability" of hypertension. These findings …

Message from President: The relentless flow of bad news from the state capitol leads educators around the state to assume that they can do nothing to remedy the problems beleaguering Louisiana’s college campuses. In large measure, this despair is warranted, in part because lawmakers lack the incipient and sometimes superstitious respect for learning that keeps universities in large states up-and-running during even the hardest times. There are, however, a variety of steps that campuses can take to solve problems on the home turf and with that lay the groundwork not only for a quick recovery but also for better, happier, …

Habitual levels of dietary sodium and potassium are correlated with age-related increases in blood pressure (BP) and likely have a role in this phenomenon. Although extensive published evidence exists from randomized trials, relatively few large-scale community surveys with multiple 24-h urine collections have been reported. We obtained three 24-h samples from 2704 individuals from Nigeria, Jamaica and the United States to evaluate patterns of intake and within-person relationships with BP. The average (±s.d.) age and weight of the participants across all the three sites were 39.9±8.6 years and 76.1±21.2 kg, respectively, and 55% of the total participants were females. Sodium …

Sustainability: More About The Toolmaker Than The Tools, R. Eugene Turner

A sustainable system is not necessarily a high-quality one, but it could be. We could, for example, “survive” on the desperate edge, as the remnants in a self-fouled and deteriorating environment. Why won’t a future sustainable system be just another industrial model of mass efficiency and throughput? Perhaps the incompatible outcomes are a choice between the sometimes nearly invisible civilizing aspects of culture nurturing respect, equality, and cooperation on one hand, and the greed and self-indulgences undermining social tolerance, empathy, and cooperation that ends up promoting violence and dehumanization. The human heritage is subtle, indestructible, and worth nurturing if we …

Message from President: Nearly two months have slipped away since LSU completed a football season that produced an astonishing record of victories: a record that, even without a national championship as garnish, must surely count as a super-size main course in the meatiest of sports. Remarkably, what lingers from the past season is not the sweet aroma of victory but rather something of a bad taste. Football, like most sports, allegorizes the institutions that sponsor it. Identifying the reason that one of the greatest seasons in sports history is creating only a paucity of post-season joy is a good way …

This study aimed to investigate the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on adventitious rooting in two sweetpotato cultivars. Experiments with 'Beauregard' and 'Evangeline' sweetpotato cuttings revealed differential adventitious root (AR) emergence responsesto1-MCP application. 'Beauregard'AR count and length decreased with 1-MCP application in two of four experiments. In contrast, 1-MCP did not influence 'Evangeline' root count. However, 'Evangeline' root length decreased in three of four experiments. Trypan blue staining of 'Beauregard' nodal tissue with delayed AR primordia emergence showed localized dead tissue in the general area where ARs emerge. The degree of staining appeared to correspond with the stage of AR emergence …
