Reassembled Art And History: The San Michele In Africisco (Ravenna)Mosaics, Carla Linville White
Reassembled Art And History: The San Michele In Africisco (Ravenna)Mosaics, Carla Linville White
LSU Master's Theses
Mosaic art gives the appearance of immutability and endurance. The materials and designs often echo or emphasize the architectural forms upon which they are fixed. Mosaics have an aura of permanence that is lacking in drawings, paintings, and frescoes. However, these same materials that present an appearance of solid form are mere fragments of stone or glass set into a base of concrete. As an art dependent on architecture, they are subject to the vicissitudes of time and weather. In the nineteenth century, human intervention in the form of invasive and unenlightened restoration practices arguably halted the deterioration of important …
Transport And Retention Of Cadmium, Copper, And Lead In Soils: Miscible Displacement Experiments, Nazanin Akrami
Transport And Retention Of Cadmium, Copper, And Lead In Soils: Miscible Displacement Experiments, Nazanin Akrami
LSU Master's Theses
Heavy metal contamination is a major concern for soil and water quality. To quantify their potential hazard, it is crucial to understand their mobility and retention in soils. The source of the problem is anthropogenic activities such as mining, smelting, usage of sewage sludge and fertilizers. The objective of this study was to quantify Cd, Cu and Pb transport and retention in three soils having different properties, and evaluate their competitive influence on the mobility of individual heavy metal. The second objective was to quantify Cd, Cu and Pb retention kinetics in the different soils. This study also investigates the …
Does The Jigsaw Method Improve Student Conceptual Knowledge In Physical Science?, Althea Alisa Morgan
Does The Jigsaw Method Improve Student Conceptual Knowledge In Physical Science?, Althea Alisa Morgan
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT The goal of my research is to determine if the Jigsaw Method has an effect on student conceptual knowledge of Physical Science in a classroom setting that predominately uses cooperative learning. The assessment instruments that were given in pretest and posttest format to assess student knowledge were the Matter Concept Inventory (MCI) and Edusoft Assessments. The research study group consisted of two sections of a ninth grade Physical Science class (N = 42) in a rural high school in Louisiana. As an intervention prior to the study, students were introduced to working in cooperative learning groups. The students in …
Fare Thee Well, Georgia L. Godwin
Fare Thee Well, Georgia L. Godwin
LSU Master's Theses
The common thread in all my work is time—its passage, effects, and remembrance. I have created a series of works that are meditations on time, the ephemeral quality of memory and the effects of aging, profession, and life decisions on our bodies, especially faces. The physical materials and my treatment of them reinforce these themes, showing the erosive qualities of earth, and drawing inspiration from natural features that signify the passage of time such as desert hoodoos, desert varnish, old wood, erosion and chemical oxidation, and from man-‐made features such as old documents that have been written, erased, and rewritten. …
Improving The Reliability Of Caregivers' Responses On The Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scales (It-Mais) Via Video, Chelsi Meagan Gibbons
Improving The Reliability Of Caregivers' Responses On The Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scales (It-Mais) Via Video, Chelsi Meagan Gibbons
LSU Master's Theses
The IT-MAIS is a caregiver-report tool used to assess a child’s functional auditory development pre- and post-implantation (Zimmerman-Phillips, et al., 2001) and as a measure of functional auditory behaviors in studies exploring cochlear implant (CI) candidacy (Barker, Kenworthy, & Walker, 2011; Franz 2002; Osberger, Zimmerman-Phillips, & Koch, 2002). However it lacks psychometric analysis of its overall reliability and validity, which are essential in determining the strength of the IT-MAIS’ conclusions in determining the direction of a child’s clinical intervention outcomes. Barker, Donovan, Schubert, and Walker (2013) showed in their longitudinal study that caregivers did not predictably respond to items from …
The Future Of Broadcast Television: Online Streaming Infringement And The U.S. Supreme Court, Elizabeth Cuttner
The Future Of Broadcast Television: Online Streaming Infringement And The U.S. Supreme Court, Elizabeth Cuttner
LSU Master's Theses
Aereo and FilmOn X are online streaming services that allow subscribers to watch and record broadcast content online by capturing over-the-air signals through antennas assigned to each user and streaming that content to subscribers. The broadcasters and media owners who own copyrights in the content transmitted via the over-the-air signals that Aereo and FilmOn X capture argue that this service infringes upon their exclusive right of public performance, specifically under the Transmit Clause. The broadcasters have brought suit against both Aereo and FilmOn X for copyright infringement in several courts across the United States; some courts have found the online …
Leadership Bias: The Case Of The Cherokee Freedmen, Kristi Barnett Williams
Leadership Bias: The Case Of The Cherokee Freedmen, Kristi Barnett Williams
LSU Master's Theses
Journalists inform residents living on or near Native American reservations about key policy issues. Since most tribal councils own and operate their news outlets, retaliation towards journalists working for the tribe is a real concern if the leadership does not appreciate the message. In response to the threat of retaliation, some tribes, like the Cherokee Nation, have legal protections for journalists. The Cherokee Nation’s newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, operates under the guidelines of the Cherokee Independent Press Act (CIPA) originally passed in 2000 and amended in 2009. CIPA was the first of its kind in Indian Country. This thesis analyzes …
Journalism And The "Dark Arts" - A Comparative Study Of British And American Media Ethic Codes Against The Backdrop Of The British Phone Hacking Scandal, Paromita Saha
LSU Master's Theses
The British phone hacking scandal in 2011 raised questions about the influence of powerful media conglemorates, most notably, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, on the culture of the media and democracy on both sides of the Atlantic. Both American and British media are the world’s leading examples of a free market press built on the same ideological foundations. This study argues that the phone hacking scandal calls for a revised and nunanced look at the differences and similarities between the American and British media systems. This comparative analysis uses British and American news media ethic codes as an unit of analysis. …
The Moderating Effect Of Gender On The Relationship Between Socialization And Internalizing Problems In Early Childhood, Hilary Lynn Adams
The Moderating Effect Of Gender On The Relationship Between Socialization And Internalizing Problems In Early Childhood, Hilary Lynn Adams
LSU Master's Theses
Researchers in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have confirmed that comorbidities are a common problem among diagnosed individuals. Current estimates suggest that more than two thirds meet criteria for an additional diagnosis of psychopathology. In particular, rates of several internalizing problems (i.e., anxiety, depression) appear to be greater for individuals with ASD than their typically developing counterparts. However, little research has been conducted examining factors apart from autism symptomatology that could influence this prevalence difference. Additionally, it is well established that anxiety and depression are more common in females than males in the general population. However, few studies …
Wolf's Spanisches Liederbuch: The Story Of Redemption, Michael Stanley Durham, Jr.
Wolf's Spanisches Liederbuch: The Story Of Redemption, Michael Stanley Durham, Jr.
LSU Master's Theses
The study of musical hermeneutics, i.e. the search for finding congeneric and exogeneric meaning in music, has seen a resurgence in recent years, drawing on earlier work by McLaughlin, Coker, Kivy, and Cone. The songs of Hugo Wolf, inspired and molded by the text, lend themselves to hermeneutical study. Neumeyer and Komar have expanded Schenker’s ideas of organic structure to apply them across multi-movement works and song cycles to show the organic unity found within. Wolf’s Spanisches Liederbuch is often casually referred to as a “cycle,” but it does not fit the schema we traditionally hold for cycles in that …
The Effects Of Using Morphophonic Faces As A Method For Teaching Sight Words To Low-Performing Kindergartners, Ashley Alexandra Brown
The Effects Of Using Morphophonic Faces As A Method For Teaching Sight Words To Low-Performing Kindergartners, Ashley Alexandra Brown
LSU Master's Theses
Five kindergarten subjects who had no known disabilities, but were identified as low beginning readers received intervention using both Plain Word Cards (PWC) and pictured word cards, termed MorphoPhonic Faces (MPF). A group of eight words were presented as printed word cards and a comparable group of eight words were presented as MPF. Results revealed that MPF did not hold an advantage for learning and retaining sight words compared to the plain print words. Improvements in sight word training corresponded in time with improved skills underlying the alphabetic principle, including phonological awareness skills and letter-sound learning, as well as emerging …
The Magic Nesting Doll, Michael Paul Mitchell
The Magic Nesting Doll, Michael Paul Mitchell
LSU Master's Theses
The Magic Nesting Doll is the introduction and first scene to a ballet that borrows the story from a children’s book of the same name by Jacqueline K. Ogburn. The Introduction sets the scene for the story by introducing the themes to the three main characters, Katya, introduced by the oboe, the evil Grand Vizier, an octatonic march, and his nephew the Prince introduced by the English horn with a somber yet regal theme. These themes are introduced in that order within the body of the work. Scene I begins the story with Katya working with her Grandmother, who falls …
The Louisiana Sciences Education Act's Impact On High School Science, Gareth Mitchell
The Louisiana Sciences Education Act's Impact On High School Science, Gareth Mitchell
LSU Master's Theses
Over the last two decades, extensive research has been conducted concerning the legality and effectiveness of teaching opposing viewpoints on controversial topics in science education. However, one of the most important aspects of this dilemma has been disregarded: the effect it has on individual teachers in their unique environments. The purpose of this research was to analyze teacher’s comprehension of recent state legislation as well as how it impacts their instruction. This quantitative approach took place through an online survey of secondary science teachers in biology, which focuses on their teaching experience, understanding of the Louisiana Science Education Act of …
Twa: A Masque, Jacqueline Kari
Twa: A Masque, Jacqueline Kari
LSU Master's Theses
Twa: A Masque is a collection of poems arranged in five impossible plays, subsumed under one general dramatic architecture. The work plays with the tradition of balladic variation, locating in the violence and strangeness of murder ballads and other aspects of the folk base an opportunity to explore themes of gender, identity, and trauma, and to expand the performative potential for non-linear narrative voices inside narrative poetry. This project re-versions archetypal characters and storylines and synthesizes multiple registers of language against the backdrop of a necropastoral fantasyland. Twa: A Masque doubles and mis-takes poetry for theater, archaism for neologism, and …
Effects Of Focused Instruction Process (Fip)On Student End-Of-Course Test (Predicting End-Of-Course Test Using Teacher-Made Test), Roland Damasco Dante
Effects Of Focused Instruction Process (Fip)On Student End-Of-Course Test (Predicting End-Of-Course Test Using Teacher-Made Test), Roland Damasco Dante
LSU Master's Theses
This study took place at a medium-sized suburban high school. It was designed to determine the usefulness of certain teacher-made tests in predicting students' end-of-course (EOC) tests. The teacher taught the students the skills in which their performance was weakest on the previous state test. The students were tested after each skill on a four-point quiz (teacher-made test). Students who scored 3—4 moved on to the next lesson or enrichment, while those who scored 0—2 were re-taught and re-tested. The procedure was repeated throughout the school year. At the end of the course, students took the state-mandated end-of-course test. The …
I'Ay Recours A Vous: An Historical And Discursive Analysis Of The Lettres Circulaires Des Décédées Of The Ursuline Order In Old And New France During The Louisiana French Colonial Period, Jarrette K. Allen
LSU Master's Theses
The Ursulines of New Orleans have been serving their beloved community now for just short of 300 years, ever since they arrived from France in 1727. They brought with them long-standing traditions and values from the Old World and innovated in many ways to adapt to the New. One of these traditions was the sending of circular letters that served as eulogies for their deceased sisters. They maintained this tradition in New Orleans but also developed a unique style, creating a livre des décédées (or “book of the dead”) that contains the biographies of the sisters and memorializes them for …
Association Of Lean Implementation On Perceived Organizational Maturity Levels Of Managers And Staff In The Public Sector, Patrick Eduardo O'Mara
Association Of Lean Implementation On Perceived Organizational Maturity Levels Of Managers And Staff In The Public Sector, Patrick Eduardo O'Mara
LSU Master's Theses
Extensive research has shown the impact of Lean implementation at the process level of an organization to increase quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce operational costs. However, little research has been done to associate Lean with improvement at the strategic level of an organization. The objectives of the present research were to (a) study the association of Lean implementation with maturity levels of employees (b) study the relationship between Lean implementation in the levels of agreement with cohesion between managers and staff in evaluating perceived current state and desired state of organizational practices (c) identify potential barriers of Lean implementation …
