A Comparison Of Two Insect Collection Techniques In Oiled And Non-Oiled Salt Marshes In Louisiana, Benjamin J. Adams, Xuan Chen, Linda M. Hooper-Bùi

Insects are important components in coastal marsh ecosystems and can be used as an indicator of marsh health. Collections of insects in coastal marshes are usually made using either sweep nets or insect vacuums. Differences in these 2 methods have not been compared within the marsh ecosystem. Therefore, we compared collections made using these methods in oiled and non-oiled marshes along multiple transects on the Louisiana coast. We found that sweep net collections accounted for 5.9 times more individual arthropods and more total insect taxa when compared with the insect vacuum collections. Oiled marshes had greater total insect richness but …

Message from President: Followers of the headlines relish big events, whether mammoth economic downturns or raging battles or colossal storms. Leaders, especially those of the academic kind, most often deal with small events, whether the rotation of Chairs in a tiny department or the bursting of a water main on a satellite campus or declining enrollments in an unfashionable curriculum. Those seeking the reasons for the troubles faced by Louisiana higher education institutions might be well-advised to narrow their inquiries: to consider the role of the incremental in building or dissolving the grand—in, as it were, gradually pushing up or …

How Little Is Too Little? An Examination Of Information Literacy Instruction Duration For Freshmen, Dauterive Sarah, Bourgeois John, Sarah Simms

This study focuses on librarian-led classes within an introductory seminar course for first-year undergraduates and whether the length of information literacy sessions affects student learning. The authors question how much library interaction is actually beneficial for students? At what point do the returns plateau? With limited resources, what is the most efficient means of reaching students in-person?

Message from President: Visiting the web sites, social media pages, or similar mass-distribution venues for Louisiana and indeed American universities will quickly disabuse explorers of the notion that adults exist or that the human life span extends much beyond twenty. Click to the ULM web site and you will see frolicsome youths bouncing on inflatable “moon walks” or scampering in muddy pools or water skiing; pop over to the Nicholls web site and the first image that appears is that of summer camp for elementary school pupils; try LSU Eunice and you will find a rotating display of shabbily clad …

'People Are Enemies To What They Don't Know' Managing Stigma And Anti-Muslim Stereotypes In A Turkish Community Center, Crystal Paul, Sarah Anna Becker

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, anti-Muslim discourse and sentiment has become pervasive in the West. Using a collaborative ethnographic approach, we observe how participants at a Turkish Community Center (TCC) cultivate stigma management strategies against the cultural backdrop of post-9/11 anti-Muslim stereotypes. In our analysis, we use Goffman's work on stigma and critical race theory to explore the socially embedded nature of stigmatization processes for Turkish Muslims in a local community center. Our findings reveal how aspects of Turkish culture and Islam, together with a structural context …

Breeding Behavior Of Female White-Tailed Deer Relative To Conception: Evidence For Female Mate Choice, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Stephen S. Ditchkoff, Bret A. Collier, Charles R. Ruth, Joshua B. Raglin

Female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are thought to choose between two behavioral strategies to maximize the quality of potential mates: sit and wait, characterized by concentrating activity within a restricted area, and excursive behavior, characterized by increased activity and excursions outside the home range. As movement patterns may influence conception, our goal was to examine the patterns of female white-tailed deer movements to evaluate which breeding strategy was employed. We equipped 36 female white-tailed deer with GPS collars from August 2013 to December 2015. We found that movement rate and probability of activity were greatest near the peak of the …

Message from President: Readers of the now old-fashioned novels of Dorothy Sayers and Evelyn Waugh remember an era of academic elegance: a time when colleges and universities reveled in custom, costume, character, and social complexity. True, the jottings of the aforementioned writers caricatured an academic establishment that hovered on the thin line between comedy (per academic satire) and criminality (per detective novels), yet they also portrayed a cultural elite that occasionally fell into absurdity or even lawlessness owing to its willingness to stand apart from the norm. Rank-and-file citizens might puzzle over the singing of the Mallard Song at All …
