History, Politics, And Religion In The Life And Compositions Of Sahba Aminikia, Sinella Aghasi Moshabad Mar 2019

History, Politics, And Religion In The Life And Compositions Of Sahba Aminikia, Sinella Aghasi Moshabad

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sahba Aminikia is an Iranian-American composer who was underrepresented in his home country. He was born into a family with Baha’i faith only two years after the Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979. The consequences of the revolution brought several challenges for him as a musician and a religious minority. Aminikia was deprived of the right to further his education, so he first moved to Russia, and later on, immigrated to the United States where he received his master's degree in composition. The research is focused on the analysis of the two pieces titled One Day; Tehran(2010), and Shab …

Carceral Dreams: Punishment In Contemporary Utopian Fiction, Amandine Faucheux Mar 2019

Carceral Dreams: Punishment In Contemporary Utopian Fiction, Amandine Faucheux

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the representation of legal violence—punishment—is an essential definitional axis to utopian literature. Utopian scholarship tends to position the political or economic system that a text imagines as the key determinant of that text’s identity as a Utopia, a dystopia, or an anti-Utopia. I propose instead that the propensity of the imaginary society to inflict violence in a legal or official context defines its utopian or dystopian quality. Through an analysis of twentieth and twenty-first century Anglophone utopian novels and stories by George Orwell, Octavia E. Butler, James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon), Adam Roberts, and Kelley Eskridge, …

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction In The Digital Age, Taylor Danielle Orgeron Feb 2019

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction In The Digital Age, Taylor Danielle Orgeron

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction in the Digital Age maps the historical and thematic relationship between video games and contemporary works of metafiction first by detailing the intertwined histories of video games and contemporary metafiction, and then by applying new materialist and game studies methodologies to both video games and contemporary novels. Not only does the height of postmodern metafiction directly coincide with the introduction of home consoles and the golden age of arcade video games in the 1970s, but the same postmodern works considered to be canonical in metafiction studies are also those lauded as the first hypertexts in new media …

John Adams Composing Through Others: Modeling, Innovation, And Recomposition, Michael Edward Palmese Feb 2019

John Adams Composing Through Others: Modeling, Innovation, And Recomposition, Michael Edward Palmese

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

John Adams has frequently embedded allusions to the music of others in his work while also drawing on more general stylistic conventions and sensibilities of others to inform his creative output. Although this dynamic has been widely acknowledged in Adams’s body of work by scholars and critics generally, it has received little sustained attention or explanation. I argue that much of his work involves “composing through others,” a process in which he adopts, in various ways, the aesthetic conventions, styles, and sensibilities of other composers. By unearthing traces of this creative approach through a focus on short, but significant, periods …

Analyzing The Population Density Pattern In China With A Gis-Automated Regionalization Method: Hu Line Revisited, Cuiling Liu Feb 2019

Analyzing The Population Density Pattern In China With A Gis-Automated Regionalization Method: Hu Line Revisited, Cuiling Liu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The famous “Hu Line”, proposed by Hu Huanyong in 1935, divided China into two regions of comparable area sizes that drastically differ in population: about 4% in the northwest part and 96% in the southeast. However, the Hu Line was proposed largely by visual examination of hand-made maps and arduous experiments of numerous configurations, and has been subject to criticism of lack of scientific rigor and accuracy. Furthermore, it has been over eight decades since the Hu Line was proposed. During the time, China sustained several major man-made and natural disasters (e.g., the World War II, the subsequent Civil War …

More Than A Pretty Interface: The Louisiana Digital Library As A Data Hub, Sl Ziegler

Faculty Publications

The Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) is an online platform for libraries, museums, archives, and historical organizations across the state. The books, manuscripts, oral histories, maps, and photographs held in the LDL showcase the cultural resources of Louisiana. The interface enables users to discover materials through search and browse, and to view and interact with these materials. The metadata about these items is also a great asset. When explored in their entirety, the data held in the LDL is as valuable as the digital facsimiles. The LDL may be conceptualized as a data hub, a place to gather and share the …

Constrained Vcg Auction With Multi-Level Channel Valuations For Spatial Spectrum Reuse In Non-Symmetric Networks, Feixiang Zhang, Xiangwei Zhou, Mingxuan Sun Feb 2019

Constrained Vcg Auction With Multi-Level Channel Valuations For Spatial Spectrum Reuse In Non-Symmetric Networks, Feixiang Zhang, Xiangwei Zhou, Mingxuan Sun

Faculty Publications

Spatial spectrum reuse enables better utilization of limited spectral resources to achieve higher system throughput. However, improving the system throughput or spectrum efficiency does not necessarily translate to the satisfaction of more secondary users (SUs) according to their demands. To improve user satisfaction, user characteristics involving the supply and demand relationship need to be considered and thus enable heterogeneous channel valuations in spatial spectrum reuse. In this paper, we design a channel transaction mechanism for non-symmetric networks and maximize user satisfaction in consideration of multi-level flexible channel valuations of the SUs. Specifically, we introduce a Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) auction, in which …

Predicting High-Dimensional Isotope Relationships From Diagnostic Fractionation Factors In Systems With Diffusional Mass Transfer, Yuyang He, Huiming Bao Jan 2019

Predicting High-Dimensional Isotope Relationships From Diagnostic Fractionation Factors In Systems With Diffusional Mass Transfer, Yuyang He, Huiming Bao

Faculty Publications

© 2018 American Chemical Society. A dual or multiple stable isotope relationship, for example, a trajectory in a δ-δ (or δ′-δ′) space, can be used to deduce the relationship of underlying diagnostic isotope fractionation factors (α) and therefore reveal the mechanism of a reaction process. While temporal data sampled from a closed-system can be treated by a Rayleigh distillation model, spatial data should be treated by a reaction-transport model. Owing to an apparent similarity between the temporal and spatial trajectories, the research community has often ignored this distinction and applied a Rayleigh distillation model to cases where a reaction-transport model …

Analyzing Hermeto Pascoal's Calendário Do Som, Adam Rosado Jan 2019

Analyzing Hermeto Pascoal's Calendário Do Som, Adam Rosado

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hermeto Pascoal is one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, having composed thousands of pieces across his career. Despite his immense and eclectic catalogue, the current analytical literature on him is comparatively scant, particularly outside of the composer’s native Brazil. In order to represent the diversity of his music, this dissertation studies a collection of his works entitled the Calendário do Som. This collection was an exercise in daily composition and comprises 366 short pieces written from July 23, 1996 to July 23, 1997. Through the analysis of the pieces in this collection, this dissertation …

Experimentally Examining The Proposed Relationships Among “Rehearsal-Based” Effects, Corey Ian Mcgill Jan 2019

Experimentally Examining The Proposed Relationships Among “Rehearsal-Based” Effects, Corey Ian Mcgill

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite the importance of rehearsal to most models of verbal working memory, its role has been recently called into question. Much prior work in support of rehearsal models has centered on the experimental effects of word-length, phonological-similarity, and irrelevant sound on serial order recall performance and the interaction of all three with concurrent articulation. However, recent research has suggested that confounding effects of stimuli, such as orthographic neighborhood, may be the true cause of the word-length effect. While these findings alone have significant implications for modern models of rehearsal, to understand them within the context of modern theories of working …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Myroslav Skoryk is one of the most influential Ukrainian composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His works draw extensively on the folk traditions of Ukraine to evoke various aspects of the country’s cultural legacy.

The violin holds a special place in the cultural, societal, and historical heritage of Ukraine. Skoryk’s works for violin draw on both Ukrainian folk traditions as well as classical performance traditions. The intricacies of Skoryk’s folk-inspired classical pieces of music are rooted in the oral traditions of Ukrainian folk music.

This document provides background information on certain Ukrainian folk music traditions and their connection to …

A Critical Edition Of The Bachianas Brasileiras Nº2 For Piano And Cello By Heitor Villa-Lobos, Henrique Borges Gomes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) is one of the most prominent names in Twentieth century music. His compositional scope encompasses languages that often combine national elements of Brazilian music with traditions of European music. Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras is one of the most representative works that reflect the dialogue of those distinct worlds. With this series of distinct pieces, Villa-Lobos aimed to achieve musical universality through incorporating elements of Bach’s music with that of his own, which was already permeated by Brazilian popular traditions.

This research focusses on the four movements of the “reduced” version of the Bachianas Brasileiras no.2 …

Civil War Obscura: Madame Castel’S Lodger, Meg Groeling Jan 2019

Civil War Obscura: Madame Castel’S Lodger, Meg Groeling

Civil War Book Review

In 2019, most folks know what fan fiction is, and this book definitely falls into that category. I have never read a book quite like Madame Castel’s Lodger, a semi-factual, semi-fictional biography of Confederate General P. T. G. Beauregard. Digging up old books that once were popular may seem like an odd hobby, but this particular volume reminds me of why I do it. It is truly an homage to Beauregard and gives some insight into his character only possible if the writer is southern herself.

The American Military: A Concise History, Stanley J. Adamiak Jan 2019

The American Military: A Concise History, Stanley J. Adamiak

Civil War Book Review

The United States has had a tumultuous history, growing from colonies on the edge of the Atlantic world to a global superpower. Its armed forces have fought a variety of wars, both large and small, including a destructive civil war and global conflicts. Over time, its policies adapted to the challenges of industrialization, societal change, and projecting its economic and military power beyond its borders.

Slave Law And The Politics Of Resistance In The Early Atlantic World, Alex Borucki Jan 2019

Slave Law And The Politics Of Resistance In The Early Atlantic World, Alex Borucki

Civil War Book Review

Edward B. Rugemer substantially repositions the significance of the actions of the enslaved, by examining how slave rebellions (and more broadly, the behavior of enslaved people) shaped certain contours of slave law in Barbados, Jamaica, and South Carolina. He surveys how the political significance of slave resistance was reflected into the deliberation and writing of slave laws in the British Atlantic.

Maryland, My Maryland: Music And Patriotism During The American Civil War, Catherine Bateson

Civil War Book Review

The Cary sisters Jennie and Hetty, and their cousin Constance, were so popular within their social and Confederate circles in Maryland and Virginia that they were “granted honorary ranks in the army” in the early years of the American Civil War (75). It was an impressive accolade for the relatives responsible for the initial success of the Confederate anthem Maryland, My Maryland. Jennie and Hetty set the song’s words to the familiar tune of O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree), while Constance aided the promotion and performance of the ballad alongside them. The story of their military promotions …

Normal Tissue Damage: Its Importance, History And Challenges For The Future, Jacqueline P. Williams, Wayne Newhauser Jan 2019

Normal Tissue Damage: Its Importance, History And Challenges For The Future, Jacqueline P. Williams, Wayne Newhauser

Faculty Publications

Sir Oliver Scott, a philanthropist and radiation biologist and, therefore, the epitome of a gentleman and a scholar, was an early Director of the BECC Radiobiology Research Unit at Mount Vernon. His tenure preceded that of Jack Fowler, with both contributing to basic, translational and clinical thought and application in radiation across the globe. With respect to this review, Fowler's name in particular has remained synonymous with the use of models, both animal and mathematical, that assess and quantify the biological mechanisms that underlie radiation-associated normal tissue toxicities. An understanding of these effects is critical to the optimal use of …

© 2019 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Purpose: Teacher ratings were used to compare children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their typically developing peers on 2 subtypes of social withdrawal (shyness and unsociability). Measurement invariance analysis was utilized to determine if teachers rated the 2 groups using the same underlying construct for each of the rating scale items that have been designed to assess withdrawn behavior. Method: The Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (TBRS; C. H. Hart & Robinson, 1996) was administered to the teachers of 173 children with DLD and 182 typically developing children (age range: 5;0-12;11 years;months) to compare 2 …
