Refuse: Excess And Resistance In Gilded Age Print And Literature, Leah Michelle Powell May 2019

Refuse: Excess And Resistance In Gilded Age Print And Literature, Leah Michelle Powell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the late-nineteenth century, mechanization led to fears about the possible consequences of overproduction while immigration led to fears about the possible consequences of overpopulation. This dissertation examines Gilded Age texts that represent regionalized spaces in efforts to process interlinked anxieties about a surplus of people and a surplus of things. I argue that images of excess and cheapness were rhetorically powerful in efforts to both control and advocate for unassimilated and nonstandard people and places in a nation increasingly dominated by an urban commodity economy. This focus on excess often takes the form of verbal or visual imagery, but …

This study examined the fan bases of three university football teams as they learn about and react on social media to their schools and head coaches becoming implicated in controversies. Under the protection of those with similar likes and the secrecy of social media, users can voice opinions in favor of and against the football team’s firing of a coach or handling of an investigation. Fan bases analyzed in the study are Ohio State University, Maryland University, and Baylor …

Falling On Deaf Ears: Social Workers’ Attitudes About Deafness, Hearing Loss, And Deaf Cultural Competence, Esperanza J. Garibay Apr 2019

Falling On Deaf Ears: Social Workers’ Attitudes About Deafness, Hearing Loss, And Deaf Cultural Competence, Esperanza J. Garibay

LSU Master's Theses

D/deaf and hard of hearing people have lower health literacy and higher rates of misdiagnosis of serious illnesses than their hearing counterparts (Sheier, 2009). This is, in part, a result of the inaccessible and culturally incompetent care provided to d/Deaf and hard of hearing individuals (Kuenburg, Fellinger & Fellinger, 2016; Hoang, LaHousse, Nakaji & Sadler, 2010 Sheier, 2009). Inaccessible and culturally incompetent care may be byproducts of human service providers’ attitudes towards d/Deaf and hard of hearing people (Ulloa, 2014; Cooper, Mason & Rose, 2005), and providers’ level of competence with properly caring for d/Deaf and hard of hearing clients …

In Search Of National Identity: Portraits Of Motherless Women In Clarín And Galdós, Leslie I. Quezada Apr 2019

In Search Of National Identity: Portraits Of Motherless Women In Clarín And Galdós, Leslie I. Quezada

LSU Master's Theses

Drawing on novels by Leopoldo Alas Clarín and Benito Pérez Galdós, I will examine the portraits of women in La Regenta (1885), Tristana (1892), andLa de San Quintín (1894). By exploring how women in the works are reflected in terms of identity and nature of their role from a male-authored perspective, I will study how different aspects influence the development of their character, as well as the issues they face when searching for their identity. Galdós and Clarín unravel the women to embody the nation of Spain and the conditions it was going through before the …

Determining Nutrient Recommendations For Agricultural Crops Based On Soil And Plant Tissue Analyses Between Different Analytical Laboratories, Lauren Liuzza Apr 2019

Determining Nutrient Recommendations For Agricultural Crops Based On Soil And Plant Tissue Analyses Between Different Analytical Laboratories, Lauren Liuzza

LSU Master's Theses

There is limited information concerning the disparities between soil and plant tissue testing laboratories. Soil and plant tissue analyses are crucial to determining nutrient applications for agricultural field crops. Accurate fertility inputs improve crop production and long-term agricultural sustainability. The over application of nutrients can potentially decrease yields and reduce profits. A study was established in 2016 at Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) in Alexandria, Louisiana to 1) assess and compare soil and plant tissue nutrient values, ratings and recommendations between research and commercial laboratories for field corn (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max), and …

Item Comparison Of Two Language Assessments In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christina M. Hensgens

LSU Master's Theses

The language skills of children with ASD vary across the population and prove challenging to assess for many reasons. The current study was designed to compare two language assessments for children with ASD to gain understanding in determining the best method for assessment. The Preschool Language Scale-5 (PLS-5) is a standardized language assessment commonly used in the field of Speech-Language Pathology, while the Verbal Behavioral Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is commonly used in Applied Behavior Analysis. Scores from children with ASD (N=17) on a total of 64 functionally equivalent items from both assessments were analyzed to determine the …

Making Connaught Place (New Delhi, India) Bicycle And Pedestrian Friendly, Surabhi Jain Apr 2019

Making Connaught Place (New Delhi, India) Bicycle And Pedestrian Friendly, Surabhi Jain

LSU Master's Theses

India is a place where people have walked miles since ancient times for basic day-to-day needs like water, food, education, shopping, entertainment, tourism, and shelter. However, the rapid growth in population and urbanization is changing the way people live and commute. The urban sprawl is pushing people to the outskirts of the city core because of which personal automobiles is becoming the main source of transportation. This is leading to congestion on roads for most times of the day. The objective of this thesis is to explore and examine how to improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities in a prominent commercial …

We're The Ones We've Been Waiting For: A Conjuring, Monterica Sade Neil Apr 2019

We're The Ones We've Been Waiting For: A Conjuring, Monterica Sade Neil

LSU Master's Theses

The following project began as an examination of and reckoning with my family’s history of secrecy, addiction, and violence in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s centered on where that history led me, the first person in my family to graduate from high school since 1969 and a first-generation college student, and where I saw that history lead my younger brother, Kerr-Dulea Freeman Neil.

The following project is centered on why I felt it was my responsibility to save Kerr-Dulea from a path he’d carved out for himself with what he’d been given by our elders, my childhood—a little girl’s witnessing of her …

The Profoundest Problem Of Ethics: About The Possibility Of A Profound Solution, Pol Pardini Gispert Apr 2019

The Profoundest Problem Of Ethics: About The Possibility Of A Profound Solution, Pol Pardini Gispert

LSU Master's Theses

My thesis is concerned with the prospects for finding a solution to what Henry Sidgwick called the Profoundest Problem of Ethics. I begin by analysing Sidgwick’s The Methods of Ethics to reveal the assumptions about rationality that led Sidgwick to claim that Ethics is plagued with a profoundest problem. I then evaluate the capacity of seven accounts – those of Derek Parfit, Roger Crisp, David Brink, David Phillips, William Frankena, Owen McLeod, and Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek and Peter Singer – to solve the Profoundest Problem of Ethics; arguing that not one is able to solve it. In the conclusion, I …

Differences Between The Acoustic Parameters Of Prosody In Speakers With Asd And Typically Developing Speakers Ages Three To Six, Heather Delaune Apr 2019

Differences Between The Acoustic Parameters Of Prosody In Speakers With Asd And Typically Developing Speakers Ages Three To Six, Heather Delaune

LSU Master's Theses

The present study was designed to compare the acoustic parameters of prosody of children between the ages of three and six with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD to age matched typically developing (TD) speakers. The acoustic parameters of prosody examined were fundamental frequency (f0), intensity, speech rate, and speech rhythm. Analyzing the acoustic features of atypical expressive prosody in speakers with ASD would provide more detailed and defined information regarding the nature of the prosodic abnormality in these individuals to guide clinicians in providing a more concentrated focus for intervention. Speech samples were obtained from ten English-speaking, monolingual children (5 ASD, …

© 2019 The Author(s). Evolution © 2019 The Society for the Study of Evolution. The virulence–transmission trade-off hypothesis proposed more than 30 years ago is the cornerstone in the study of host–parasite co-evolution. This hypothesis rests on the premise that virulence is an unavoidable and increasing cost because the parasite uses host resources to replicate. This cost associated with replication ultimately results in a deceleration in transmission rate because increasing within-host replication increases host mortality. Empirical tests of predictions of the hypothesis have found mixed support, which cast doubt about its overall generalizability. To quantitatively address this issue, we conducted …

Purpose: Retrieval practice has been found to be a powerful strategy to enhance long-term retention of new information; however, the utility of retrieval practice when teaching young children new words is largely unknown, and even less is known for young children with language impairments. The current study examined the effect of 2 different retrieval schedules on word learning at both the behavioral and neural levels. Method: Participants included 16 typically developing children (MTD = 61.58 months) and 16 children with developmental language disorder (MDLD = 59.60 months). Children participated in novel word learning sessions in which the spacing of retrieval …

Acoustic Characteristics Of Vowels Produced By Young Children From The New Orleans Area, Rebecca E. Dorsa Apr 2019

Acoustic Characteristics Of Vowels Produced By Young Children From The New Orleans Area, Rebecca E. Dorsa

LSU Master's Theses

Understanding dialects and their effects on speech and language is integral to the field of speech-language pathology, as dialectal differences could potentially be misdiagnosed as speech or language disorders if these factors are not well-considered. The number and organization of the vowel system of one regional dialect of American English differs from those of another regional dialects. Therefore, understanding the effect of dialect on vowel productions in children can aid in the accurate evaluation of children from various dialectal backgrounds. The aims of the proposed study were to 1) determine the age at which young children develop acoustic markers of …

Effects Of Plant Viruses On Vectors And Non-Vector Herbivores In Three Different Pathosystems, Sunil Paudel Mar 2019

Effects Of Plant Viruses On Vectors And Non-Vector Herbivores In Three Different Pathosystems, Sunil Paudel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Plant viruses are an important component of agro-ecosystems and the knowledge of impacts they can cause on their hosts, and on different vectors and non-vector herbivores associated with the hosts, is very crucial in devising sound management strategies for virus disease and vector control in the landscape. The interactions between these components, however, are difficult to predict and vary according to the system under investigation. In order to understand some of these interrelationships, different sets of experiments were carried out in three different pathosystems to look at the impacts of plant viruses on vector and non-vector herbivores. Firstly, in Sorghum …

Marcela: Emociones, Geografía E Intelectualidad, Maria D. Garcia De La Torre Mar 2019

Marcela: Emociones, Geografía E Intelectualidad, Maria D. Garcia De La Torre

LSU Master's Theses

By positioning Marcela at the field because she prefers honest conversation with young women instead of the superficiality of the court, Cervantes invites us to consider the debate of “disregard of the court and worship of the small village” from a different perspective. Marcela’s set out towards the field entails a much complex meaning which until now has been recognized. Her set out from the court turns out to be part of a Cervantine strategy which seeks to display the field as a natural space whose self-development makes possible “culture” or the speech of reason and not only as the …

Acquiring Native-Like Norms Of Making A Request In Spanish During Short-Term Study Abroad In Argentina And Spain, Christine H. Song

LSU Master's Theses

The current study examines if L2 learners of Spanish acquire native-like norms of making a request during short-term study abroad in Argentina and Spain via Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT). The investigation included 3 groups of the participants: an experimental group of 15 U.S. students who studied in Argentina or Spain; a control group of 12 U.S. students who had not studied abroad; and a control group of 7 native speakers of Spanish. The results show that students in the study abroad group became more native-like in making a request to a certain extent. Firstly, the students in the experimental group …
