Coastal wetland restoration can be complex and expensive, so knowing long-term consequences makes it important to inform decisions about if, when, and where to conduct restoration. We determined temporal changes in land gain and loss in receiving basins and adjacent reference areas for two diversions of the Mississippi River in south Louisiana (Davis Pond and Caernarvon initiated in 1991 and 2002, respectively). Water from both diversions went into receiving basins with vegetated areas as did the adjoining reference areas. The results from two different types of satellite imagery analyses demonstrate a net land loss after diversions began. The results were …

The widely used agricultural herbicide atrazine enters wetlands and may potentially affect wetland plants that provide critical reinforcement of soil strength and contribute to ecosystem stability in ways that may vary among soil types. We conducted greenhouse experiments using four levels of atrazine doses and three different soil textures to test for differences between control and experimental treatments and interactive effects of soil texture and atrazine exposure by using the tensile root strength of the coastal wetland emergent macrophyte Spartina patens as the response variable. The tensile root strength of S. patens was not affected after 50days of atrazine exposure …

The Trump administration has proposed replacing the Clean Water Rule, a 2015 regulation that defined the statutory term waters of the United States to clarify the geographic jurisdiction of the Clean Water Act. Since its promulgation, the Clean Water Rule has been subjected to numerous judicial challenges. We submitted an amici curiae brief to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, explaining why the Clean Water Rule, and its definition of waters of the United States, is scientifically sound. The definition of waters of the United States is a legal determination informed by science. The best available …

Coastal marshes are important carbon sinks facing serious threats from climatic stressors. Current research reveals that the growth of individual marsh plants is susceptible to a changing climate, but the responses of different marsh systems at a landscape scale are less clear. Here, we document the multi-decadal changes in the phenology and the area of the extensive coastal marshes in Louisiana, USA, a representative of coastal ecosystems around the world that currently experiencing sea-level rise, temperature warming, and atmospheric CO2 increase. The phenological records are constructed using the longest continuous satellite-based record of the Earth's ecosystems, the Landsat data, and …

The diamondback terrapin is the only temperate turtle species that exclusively inhabits estuarine environments. Morphological, behavioral and physiological features contribute to the terrapin’s ability to regulate body fluid osmotic pressure in a euryhaline environment. Low integument permeability combined with aquatic–terrestrial shuttling behavior limits passive exchange of water and salts with the environment, and terrapins regulate active uptake of salts via alterations in drinking and feeding behavior. The lachrymal salt gland facilitates excretion of excess sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) ions through active transport mechanisms. We investigated body fluid dynamics, oxygen consumption (V O2) and osmotic status …

Tropical cyclone induced phytoplankton productivity is examined using a tropical cyclone version of the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS®). A four-component Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Detritus biological model is integrated into COAMPS to create a fully integrated air-ocean-wave-biology model. This study investigates the upper ocean physical and biological states before and after Hurricane Ivan traversed the central Gulf of Mexico, in mid-September 2004. Elevated concentrations of surface chlorophyll-a appear in the simulation two days after the passage of the tropical cyclone, and these results are spatially and temporally coherent with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data for this time period. Model results …

Hurricanes are increasingly being recognized as important episodic drivers in ocean biogeochemical cycling; however, spatiotemporal response of their impacts on coastal and estuarine ecosystems are limited. Hurricane Michael, which made landfall just west of Apalachicola Bay (ApB) on October 10, 2018 as a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 250 km h−1, caused widespread damage to the northwest Florida coast, and adverse effects on oyster reefs and water quality in ApB due to winds and coastal flooding associated with a strong storm surge. The impact of wind forcing and retreating storm surges on coastal and shelf biogeochemical …

The electric power industry is an essential part of the energy industry as it strengthens the monitoring and control management of household electricity for the construction of an economic power system. In this paper, a non-intrusive affinity propagation (AP) clustering algorithm is improved according to the factor graph model and the belief propagation theory. The energy data of non-intrusive monitoring consists of the actual energy consumption data of each electronic appliance. The experimental results show that this improved algorithm identifies the basic and combined class of home appliances. According to the possibility of conversion between different classes, the combination of …

© 2019 by the authors. Marine biogeochemical processes can strongly interact with processes occurring in adjacent ice and sediments. This is especially likely in areas with shallow water and frequent ice cover, both of which are common in the Arctic. Modeling tools are therefore required to simulate coupled biogeochemical systems in ice, water, and sediment domains. We developed a 1D sympagic-pelagic-benthic transport model (SPBM) which uses input from physical model simulations to describe hydrodynamics and ice growth and modules from the Framework for Aquatic Biogeochemical Models (FABM) to construct a user-defined biogeochemical model. SPBM coupled with a biogeochemical model simulates …

Isomers 2 and 3 are produced by reaction of the pyridyltriazole ligand 1-benzyl-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (bpt) (1) with fac-[RuCl2(DMSO-S)3(DMSO-O)]. Reaction in acetone produces ca 95% 2, which is the OC-6-14 isomer, with cis DMSO and trans chlorido ligands, and 5% 3 (the OC-6-32 isomer, with cis DMSO and cis chlorido ligands, and the pyridyl moiety of bpt trans to DMSO). Reaction in refluxing toluene initially forms 2, which slowly isomerizes to 3.

A Campaign Of Giants: The Battle For Petersburg: Volume One, From The Crossing Of The James To The Crater, Benjamin F. Cooling
Civil War Book Review
The conclusion of the Centenary of World War I may be the appropriate moment to re-visit America’s forerunner to modern siege warfare, the ten-month Richmond-Petersburg campaign which all but concluded the agonizingly long struggle in the eastern theater. Just as the Western Front in France eventually cracked, opening the way to the Armistice, so too did Robert E. Lee’s determined stand for the Confederate capital, thus leading to the Appomattox solution. In a comprehensive, labor of love based on encyclopedic knowledge of men and events, long-time Petersburg authority A. Wilson Greene prepares a three-volume treatise, the first of which covers …

Writing History With Lightning: Cinematic Representations Of Nineteenth-Century America, David J. Brokaw
Civil War Book Review
Matthew Christopher Hulbert and John C. Inscoe’s edited volume, Writing History with Lightning: Cinematic Representations of Nineteenth-Century America, aptly gets its title from Wilson’s notorious response upon viewing Birth of a Nation. Wilson’s apocryphal statement, alluding to the undeniable lure of history played out on the big screen, arguably still holds true to this day. But as Hulbert notes in his introduction, Wilson purportedly added, “My only regret is that it is all so terribly true,” a claim not only fraught with historical error, but with devastating implications for Jim Crow America. As these twenty-six contributors deftly illustrate, …

Oliver P. Morton And The Politics Of The Civil War And Reconstruction, John Patrick Daly
Civil War Book Review
Oliver P. Morton and the Politics of the Civil War and Reconstruction is an outstanding biography of a vital subject. Morton deserves the greater attention James Fuller gives him. Morton‘s career as Indiana’s Republican governor has always merited attention, but Fuller goes a step past this to show that his even longer career as a senator during Reconstruction was equally important. Civil War historians know Morton primarily as the wartime governor of Indiana (1861-1867). Famously, Morton did not call the state legislature into session when Democrats took control of it. Morton feared the Democrat’s Copperhead tendencies and tepid support for …

© The Author(s) 2018. Dosage compensation of the mammalian X chromosome (X) was proposed by Susumu Ohno as a mechanism wherein the inactivation of one X in females would lead to doubling the expression of the other. This would resolve the dosage imbalance between eutherian females (XX) versus male (XY) and between a single active X versus autosome pairs (A). Expression ratio of X- and A-linked genes has been relatively well studied in humans and mice, despite controversial results over the existence of upregulation of X-linked genes. Here we report the first comprehensive test of Ohno’s hypothesis in bovine preattachment …

Copyright © 2019 Salter et al. Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) are small quails in the New World Quail family (Odontophoridae) and are one of the most phenotypically diverse avian species. Despite extensive research on bobwhite ecology, genomic studies investigating the evolution of phenotypic diversity in this species are lacking. Here, we present a new, highly contiguous assembly for bobwhites using tissue samples from a vouchered, wild, female bird collected in Louisiana. By performing a de novo assembly and scaffolding the assembly with Dovetail Chicago and HiC libraries and the HiRise pipeline, we produced an 866.8 Mb assembly including 1,512 scaffolds …

Union Bound For Quantum Information Processing, Samad Khabbazi Oskouei, Stefano Mancini, Mark M. Wilde

In this paper, we prove a quantum union bound that is relevant when performing a sequence of binary-outcome quantum measurements on a quantum state. The quantum union bound proved here involves a tunable parameter that can be optimized, and this tunable parameter plays a similar role to a parameter involved in the Hayashi–Nagaoka inequality (Hayashi & Nagaoka 2003 IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 49, 1753–1768. (doi:10.1109/TIT.2003.813556)), used often in quantum information theory when analysing the error probability of a square-root measurement. An advantage of the proof delivered here is that it is elementary, relying only on basic properties of projectors, Pythagoras’ …

We report the analysis of additional multiband photometry and spectroscopy and new adaptive optics (AO) imaging of the nearby planetary microlensing event TCPJ05074264+2447555 (Kojima-1), which was discovered toward the Galactic anticenter in 2017 (Nucita et al.). We confirm the planetary nature of the light-curve anomaly around the peak while finding no additional planetary feature in this event. We also confirm the presence of apparent blending flux and the absence of significant parallax signal reported in the literature. The AO image reveals no contaminating sources, making it most likely that the blending flux comes from the lens star. The measured multiband …

Microlensing can be used to discover exoplanets of a wide range of masses with orbits beyond ∼1 au, and even free-floating planets. The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) mission will use microlensing to discover approximately 1600 planets by monitoring ∼100 million stars to find ∼50,000 microlensing events. Modeling each microlensing event, especially the ones involving two or more lenses, is typically complicated and time consuming, and analyzing thousands of WFIRST microlensing events is possibly infeasible using current methods. Here, we present an algorithm that is able to rapidly evaluate thousands of simulated WFIRST binary-lens microlensing light curves, returning an …

The equivalence principle is a perennial subject of controversy, especially in connection with radiation by a uniformly accelerated classical charge, or a freely falling charge observed by a supported detector. Recently, related issues have been raised in connection with the Unruh radiation associated with accelerated detectors (including two-level atoms and resonant cavities). A third type of system, very easy to analyze because of conformal invariance, is a two-dimensional scalar field interacting with perfectly reflecting boundaries (mirrors). After reviewing the issues for atoms and cavities, we investigate a stationary mirror from the point of view of an accelerated detector in 'Rindler …
