Dna Methylation, Chromatin Structure And Expression Of Maize Ribosomal Rna Genes., Eldon Ralph Jupe Jan 1988

Dna Methylation, Chromatin Structure And Expression Of Maize Ribosomal Rna Genes., Eldon Ralph Jupe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The restriction endonuclease HpaII was utilized to examine ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) methylation in maize and teosinte leaf DNA. Much of the rDNA was inaccessible to HpaII cleavage indicating that these repeat units were completely methylated. In all of the DNAs examined, a significant fraction (10-25%) of the rDNA was cleaved at least once by HpaII into repeat unit length (9.1 kbp) fragments. The undermethylated HpaII sites mapped to the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of the rDNA. The major site of undermethylation was located in a region near the transcriptional start site. An EcoRI polymorphism, present in the 26S gene …

Semantic Constraint Modeling In Database Using The Applicative Data Language., Herman Hai-Lou Lee Jan 1988

Semantic Constraint Modeling In Database Using The Applicative Data Language., Herman Hai-Lou Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is a growing need to incorporate database integrity subsystems into large information systems in engineering design environments and real-time control and monitoring environments. The objectives of the integrity subsystem are to provide a user interface for constraint specification, to compile the specification into enforcement strategies, and to check data integrity at both compile-time and run-time. The approach proposed by this research is to develop the conceptual view of the database using the Entity Relationship Model (ERM). Users' queries and semantic constraints can be specified by an ER-based data language, the Applicative Data Language (ADL). Any ADL constraint specification is …

Compatibility Of Biological Control With Host Plant Resistance And Insecticidal Control In Soybeans., David Boyd Orr Jan 1988

Compatibility Of Biological Control With Host Plant Resistance And Insecticidal Control In Soybeans., David Boyd Orr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were conducted to investigate the influence of both plant resistance and insecticidal controls used in soybean on several natural enemies of pest insects. There were two major objectives to this research: (1) to examine the effects of an insect herbivore-resistant soybean genotype on relationships between four levels of a trophic system; (2) to determine the influence of the primary insecticides applied to control Louisiana soybean insect pests on survival of a major biological control agent of stink bugs. In the first study, pre-imaginal development of the predatory pentatomid, Podisus maculiventris (Say), was affected by soybean antibiosis in a manner …

An Investigation Of Internal Auditor Judgment On The Importance Of Indicators Of Potential Financial Fraud: An Analytic Hierarchy Process Approach., Barbara Ann Apostolou Jan 1988

An Investigation Of Internal Auditor Judgment On The Importance Of Indicators Of Potential Financial Fraud: An Analytic Hierarchy Process Approach., Barbara Ann Apostolou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Financial fraud has become a serious problem to the business community. As a result, regulators and financial statement users have looked to the auditing profession for answers to the problem. The role of the internal auditor has received significant attention due to the unique position they fill. That is, they are positioned to observe and test financial and operational activities of the firm on a continuous basis. In addition, internal auditors are able to devote more time to the deterrence and detection of financial fraud than their external counterparts. The National Commission on Fraudulent Financial Reporting (Treadway Commission) issued its …

Electronic Structure Of Clusters: Applications To High-T(C) Superconductors., Han Chen Jan 1988

Electronic Structure Of Clusters: Applications To High-T(C) Superconductors., Han Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We present a method of studying the electronic structure of clusters by ab initio, self-consistent, local spin density functional calculations. The linear combination of Gaussian orbitals (LCGO) method has been adopted in developing a general cluster program. A variational charge fitting procedure is used in the evaluation of the matrix elements of the electrostatic potential, and a separate least-squares fitting procedure is used in regard to the exchange-correlation potential. Self-consistent solutions have been obtained using this program for the Ba$\sb4$Cu$\sb2$O$\sb7$ clusters as a portion of the Cu-O chain in the high-T$\sb{c}$ superconductor YBa$\sb2$Cu$\sb3$O$\sb7$. Four different charge states of Ba$\sb4$Cu$\sb2$O$\sb7$ are …

An Object Oriented Paradigm For Requirements Specifications., David W. Cordes Jan 1988

An Object Oriented Paradigm For Requirements Specifications., David W. Cordes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Software engineering defines a formalized five-step life-cycle for software development. These steps are: requirements specification, design, implementation, testing and maintenance. The requirements specification phase of the software development life-cycle is responsible for determining the functionality of the proposed system. In this work, a methodology is developed that enhances the generation of accurate requirements specifications, utilizing an object-oriented paradigm. This research realizes four objectives. First, the process of information transferral between the user and the specification team is enhanced. Second, a working base of knowledge containing the domain-specific information within the initial requirements document is established for use by the specification …

Information Acquisition And Decision-Making In Creditors' Decision Environment., Pao-Chuan Lin Jan 1988

Information Acquisition And Decision-Making In Creditors' Decision Environment., Pao-Chuan Lin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study identified the financial information used by the loan officers in a commercial lending context. The identification of information acquisition made it possible for the researcher to verify whether the manipulated financial information in the experiment was processed by the subjects. As a consequence, the inference concerning the impact of the treatment on loan officers' decisions could be more conclusive. Most real decision tasks are similar to a situation in which the decision maker has to search for and decide which information to use rather than conforming to an a priori decision model specified by the researcher. The subjects …

Constancy Of (Acoustic) Relative Timing Measures In The Fluent Utterances Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers., Phoebe Cooper Weaver Jan 1988

Constancy Of (Acoustic) Relative Timing Measures In The Fluent Utterances Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers., Phoebe Cooper Weaver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stuttering and nonstuttering children's articulatory timing abilities as measured by duration differences were compared as rate, stress and phonetic complexity were varied and both internal and external timing sources were used. Use of external timing sources resulted in within normal limit performance by the stutterers as compared to their nonstuttering peers. Significant average intrasubject variability occurred on phonetic complexity tasks involving a variable linguistic sentence and its reiterative counterpart and on a syllable expansion through clustering task. Use of internal timing sources resulted in within normal limit performance by the stutterers on both rate tasks but on only one of …

The Effects Of The Tax Reform Act Of 1986 On The Real Estate Capital Markets And Its Differential Effects On Entity And Functional Forms: An Empirical Investigation., Evelyn C. Hume

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Differences of opinion exist in the literature regarding the relationship between changes in tax policy and changes in the value of firms' capital stock. The purpose of this study was twofold. One aim was to determine whether the real estate capital markets react to public information regarding proposed or actual changes in tax law. The second and primary objective was to test the traditional economic theory that a direct relationship exists between changes in tax law and the value of the firm. Changes in cost recovery rules for real property and in corporate tax rates were the tax provisions of …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stomach content analysis and stable carbon isotope ratios were used to determine diet and food assimilation of red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii) and white river crawfish (Procambarus acutus acutus) in three types of commercial ponds. Crawfish stomachs contained largely macrophytes, detritus and leaf litter, and to a lesser extent aquatic insects and zooplankton. Food habits of P. clarkii and P. acutus acutus were similar, but P. acutus acutus consumed more animal material than did P. clarkii. Food habits were similar among different sizes of P. clarkii and P. acutus acutus. Seasonal stable carbon isotope ratios ($\delta\sp{13}$C) of P. clarkii and …

Aspects Of Vowel Perception By Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Listeners., Joan Marie Besing Jan 1988

Aspects Of Vowel Perception By Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Listeners., Joan Marie Besing

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of durational differences on the identification of vowel tokens was studied using ten normal hearing and six hearing impaired subjects. Stimuli were synthetically generated and varied in duration of the steady state, durations of the initial and final transitions and F1/F2/F3 location. Listeners were required to identify the given vowel token from a set of ten possible alternatives. The results from the normal hearing group supported the established effects of duration on the perception of vowels. However, these effects were different depending on the frequency locations of F1/F2/F3. Further, changes in the duration of the initial transition had …

Query Processing On The Entity-Relationship Graph Based Relational Database Systems., Hung-Pin Chen Jan 1988

Query Processing On The Entity-Relationship Graph Based Relational Database Systems., Hung-Pin Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An ERG (Entity-Relationship Graph) can be used to provide a semantic structure to a relational database system. An ERG is defined by local regions. A local region contains two nodes of entity types and a node of relationship type. The semantic constraints of the database represented by the ERG (Entity-Relationship Graph) can be used to enforce the global integrity of the database system. A query is mapped onto the ERG to obtain an ERQG (Entity-Relationship Query Graph). This mapping can be specified by the user by navigating the database or automatically allocated by the system via a universal relation interface. …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of The Operating Funds Flow Measures Of Cash, Net Quick Assets, And Working Capital In Predicting Future Cash Flow., Catherine Innes Green Gaharan Jan 1988

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of The Operating Funds Flow Measures Of Cash, Net Quick Assets, And Working Capital In Predicting Future Cash Flow., Catherine Innes Green Gaharan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 95, "Statement of Cash Flows," the Financial Accounting Standards Board requires a statement of cash flows in place of a statement of changes in financial position. This information is assumed to be useful in predicting future cash flow. The first part of this three-part study empirically tests this assumption by comparing the abilities of three operating funds flow measures (working capital, net quick assets, and cash) to predict future cash flows. The second part of this study determines whether the reporting concept best for predicting future cash flow is dependent upon industry classification. …

Ada Rehan: American Actress (1857-1916). (Volumes I And Ii)., Aileen Alana Hendricks-Wenck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although Ada Rehan (1857-1916) achieved international fame as America's representative actress, rivaling Ellen Terry during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, historians have forgotten her. After beginning in 1872 to perform with her sister, Kate, and brother-in-law, Oliver Doud Byron, in their company and, later, in Mrs. Louisa Lane Drew's Arch Street Theatre Company (1873-75), Ada moved upward to ingenue roles in Barney Macauley's company (1875-76). Then she assumed leading parts with John W. Albaugh's company (1876-79), followed by a few months supporting Fanny Davenport. Finally, she advanced to a position in one of the most prominent theatres in …

The Effects Of Fire On Forest Community Composition, Structure, And Pattern In Florida Sandhills., Alan John Rebertus Jan 1988

The Effects Of Fire On Forest Community Composition, Structure, And Pattern In Florida Sandhills., Alan John Rebertus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The influence of fire on turkey oak (Quercus laevis Walt.) and sand live oak (Q. geminata Small) populations was examined in experimental fires in sandhills near Tampa. Turkey oak crown survival was positively related to oak dbh, distance to the nearest longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), and dbh of the nearest pine. The pyrogenic litter of pines adversely affected survival of small turkey oaks within 10-20 m of the nearest pine, depending on fire severity. Resprouting of crown-killed turkey oaks was inversely related to oak dbh and, in one field, distance to the nearest pine. Poor resprouting away from pines …

Plant Protein Improvement By Genetic Engineering: Use Of Synthetic Genes., Moon Sik Yang Jan 1988

Plant Protein Improvement By Genetic Engineering: Use Of Synthetic Genes., Moon Sik Yang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The essential amino acid composition of plant foodstuffs is very important, especially in the developing countries where people very heavily depend on plant proteins from a single source. In these situations, it would be highly beneficial to 'engineer' the plant to produce proteins with a balanced essential amino acid content. Recombinant DNA technology and Agrobacterium-based vector systems offer a novel approach to modify plant proteins. Several attempts with some encouraging results have been made to express plant storage protein genes in transgenic plants. However, improvement of the quality of plant protein using these techniques is in an early stage. In …

A Comparison Of Four Multiattribute Utility Function Elicitation Procedures For Preference Predictions., Phillip C. Fry Jan 1988

A Comparison Of Four Multiattribute Utility Function Elicitation Procedures For Preference Predictions., Phillip C. Fry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Multiattribute utility analysis is a set of formal procedures designed to assist a decision maker in resolving problems requiring tradeoffs among competing objectives. The approach elicits a multiattribute utility function (MAUF) intended to represent the decision maker's preferences for multivariate alternatives. While different MAUF assessment technologies are available, few studies have been conducted that compare assessment techniques. The purpose of this research was to investigate the predictive ability of four MAUF elicitation procedures. Keeney-Raiffa (KR), holistic orthogonal parameter estimation (HOPE), simple multiattribute rating technique (SMART), and mathematical programming elicited MAUFs were compared in terms of (1) ordinal preference predictions, (2) …

'You Are About To Begin Reading': The Nature And Function Of Second Person Point Of View In Narrative., Darlene Marie Hantzis Jan 1988

'You Are About To Begin Reading': The Nature And Function Of Second Person Point Of View In Narrative., Darlene Marie Hantzis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study asserts that second person point of view functions as a distinct category of point of view, which has been discounted by critical theorists. Second person point of view is defined in this study as a particular use of the second person pronoun. The "you" in second person point of view texts generates an alternating pattern of identification and displacement that constructs an intersubjectivity among narrative elements--narrator, actant, and narratee(s). Therefore, common uses of the "you" to refer only to the reader (narratee) of a text or to the actant in a text do not constitute second person point …

Applications Of Solid State Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopy., William Lawrence Jarrett Jr Jan 1988

Applications Of Solid State Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopy., William Lawrence Jarrett Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solid-state deuterium NMR spectroscopic techniques have been applied to a series of organic and organometallic systems. The construction and operation of an ADLF (adiabatic demagnetization in the laboratory frame) spectrometer is described in detail. The instrument has been used to obtain high-field solid-state deuterium NMR spectra for a series of para-substituted phenyl acetic acids which have been deuteriated at the methylene site, as well as $d\sb1$-napthalene, triphenylphosphonium-(methyl-$d\sb3$) bromide, and barium chlorate monohydrate (25% deuteriated). The data for the para-substituted phenyl acetic acids show that the two methylene deuterons are inequivalent. This inequivalency is due to the difference in the $\sp2$H-C$\sb1$-C$\sb2$-O …

The Relative Effects Of Salespersons' Ratings On Ability And Effort Criteria., Sandra Edwards Mckay Jan 1988

The Relative Effects Of Salespersons' Ratings On Ability And Effort Criteria., Sandra Edwards Mckay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Performance appraisal is a crucial function of sales managers. Often, performance appraisal information is used as a basis for decisions relating to pay, promotion, and termination. Such decisions can have a substantial impact on the motivation, satisfaction, and productivity of members of the sales force. Despite its importance, little research has investigated the way in which decisions concerning salesperson performance are made. The primary goal of this research was to examine the relative effects of salespeople's ability and effort on decisions relating to promotion, compensation, transfer, and termination. A secondary purpose was to see if salesperson sex influenced these decisions. …

Genetics Of Resistance To Reniform Nematode, Rotylenchulus Reniformis Linford And Oliveira, In Cotton, Gossypium Hirsutum L., Noor Muhammad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four Gossypium hirsutum L. lines (La. RN 910, Auburn 612 RNR, M 019-RNR, and 'Deltapine 41' (Dp 41)) were selected for a genetic study of their reaction to reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira, based on observed differences. Dp 41 (susceptible) was crossed to each of the three moderately resistant lines. F$\sb1$ generations were selfed and each was backcrossed to each of its parents. Estimates of mean gene effects and the three types of digenic epistatic effects affecting genetic variation of resistance to reniform were calculated using the generation means of P$\sb1$, P$\sb2$, F$\sb1$, F$\sb2$, P$\sb1$F$\sb1$, and P$\sb2$F$\sb1$. Six …

Molecular Analysis Of Mutant And Wild Type Alcohol Dehydrogenase Alleles From Drosophila., Mark Andrew Batzer Jan 1988

Molecular Analysis Of Mutant And Wild Type Alcohol Dehydrogenase Alleles From Drosophila., Mark Andrew Batzer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Wild type alcohol dehydrogenase polypeptides (ADH) from Drosophila melanogaster transformants were examined using western blots and polyclonal antiserum specific for Drosophila melanogaster ADH. These data indicate that ADH from Hawaiian drosophilids was similar in molecular weight to Drosophila melanogaster ADH, but that the isoelectric points of the Hawaiian electromorphs were distinct. Therefore it was evident that western blots could be used to characterize ADH from different species of Drosophila. Mutants induced in Drosophila spermatozoa at the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) locus using X-rays, 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea (ENU) or ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) were characterized using genetic complementation tests, western blots, Southern blots, northern blots …

Crystal Structure Analyses Of An Organic Charge Transfer Salt, Three Bridged Binuclear Cobalt Complexes, And A Thiazole Derivative., Andrea Claire Greene

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The structures of five compounds have been determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction. A non-superconducting organic charge-transfer salt, bis- (bis-(ethylenedithia)-tetrathiafulvalene) dibromoaurate(I), (BEDT-TTF)$\sb2$AuBr$\sb2$, was synthesized electrochemically, and crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2/c with Z = 2 and lattice constants 9 = 7.7950(21) A, b = 6.7150(6) A, c = 32.2000(31) A, $\beta$ = 100.508(13)$\sp\circ$; R = 0.0365 for 174 variables and 1904 observed reflections. One end of the independent BEDT-TTF molecule is disordered, a crystallographic feature which is common in these salts. Short sulfur-sulfur contact distances between cations are observed; however, the cations are not arranged in the same manner …

An Investigation Of The Student Equity Effects Of The Public School Finance System In Louisiana., Barbara Yates Lacost Jan 1988

An Investigation Of The Student Equity Effects Of The Public School Finance System In Louisiana., Barbara Yates Lacost

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Louisiana school funding system on two dimensions of student equity: equality of opportunity and equal treatment of equals. This was accomplished by assessing alternate year data from 1977-78 to 1985-86 in order to document changes, if any, that occurred in the equality associated with the distribution of state and local revenue. Berne and Stiefel's (1984) conceptual framework for measuring equity was utilized to determine the variables and measures used. Of first importance was the investigation of equal opportunity. This principle was represented by the fiscal neutrality standard, which …

A Molecular Characterization Of An Escherichia Coli Restriction System Specific For 5-Methylcytosine-Containing Dna., Troy Kevin Ross Jan 1988

A Molecular Characterization Of An Escherichia Coli Restriction System Specific For 5-Methylcytosine-Containing Dna., Troy Kevin Ross

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The McrB restriction system in Escherichia coli K-12 is responsible for sequence-specific recognition and inactivation of DNA containing 5-methylcytosine. A derivative of plasmid pUC8 with a 5.5-kilobase pair BglII-EcoRI restriction fragment from the E. coli K-12 chromosome, imparted the wild-type phenotype to the McrB$\sp-$ strain K802. The limits of the McrB region within this DNA fragment were defined by deleting portions of the 5.5-kb insert and assaying for McrB restriction of M.AluI-methylated DNA. Analyses of polypeptides encoded by the McrB region using a maxicell strain revealed that at least three proteins, having molecular weights of approximately 51,000, 39,000, and 33,000, …
