Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves
Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the last two decades a tremendous volume of research data has been collected about differences between female and male students in mathematics. But although the amount of data collected has been large, there have been few conscious attempts to understand this data in social, economic, technological, and political terms. This history of academic research on gender differences connects the explosion of academic interest in the 1970s and 1980s with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the sense of technological crisis that pervades mathematics education and popular consciousness. The emergence of "Women's Lib" and interest in gender equity in …
Analytical Model Of The Progression Of Cracking In Fiber-Reinforced Composites., Jane L. D Runkle
Analytical Model Of The Progression Of Cracking In Fiber-Reinforced Composites., Jane L. D Runkle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two analytical shear lag models have been developed for the progressive damage and final failure of epoxy matrix, fiber-reinforced composites under biaxial loading. The first is a three layer model for laminates of the type ($\pm\theta$,90n) s under general biaxial loading. It gives matrix cracking predictions for the central 90$\sp\circ$ ply group. The second model is a five-layer model for laminates of the type (90n/0m/90p) s under biaxial loading, but it does not include in-plane shear. The five-layer model predicts matrix cracking in all ply groups. The amount of damage in terms of modulus decrease and number of matrix cracks …

We report a study of electron proton collisions at very low Q2, corresponding to virtual photoproduction at centre of mass energies in the range 100-295 GeV. The distribution in transverse energy of the observed hadrons is much harder than can be explained by soft processes. Some of the events show back-to-back two-jet production at the rate and with the characteristics expected from hard two-body scattering. A subset of the two-jet events have energy in the electron direction consistent with that expected from the photon remnant in resolved photon processes. © 1992.
Jones Polynomials For Intersecting Knots As Physical States Of Quantum Gravity, Bernd Brügmann, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Jones Polynomials For Intersecting Knots As Physical States Of Quantum Gravity, Bernd Brügmann, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We find a consistent formulation of the constraints of quantum gravity with a cosmological constant in terms of the Ashtekar new variables in the connection representation, including the existence of a state that is a solution to all the constraints. This state is related to the Chern-Simons form constructed from the Ashtekar connection and has an associated metric in space-time that is everywhere nondegenerate. We then transform this state to the loop representation and find solutions to all the constraint equations for intersecting loops. These states are given by suitable generalizations of the Jones knot polynomial for the case of …
The Position Of Isleño In Hispanic Dialectology, Lynn Ellen Pearson
The Position Of Isleño In Hispanic Dialectology, Lynn Ellen Pearson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This is a study on Isleño, a vestigial variant of Spanish spoken in Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana by the descendants of Canary Islanders who settled in Louisiana during the 1780's. The goal of this research is to determine the position of Isleño in Hispanic dialectology. Previous researchers have made conflicting claims about the origins of Isleño's linguistic features, e.g. on one hand that Isleño is primarily composed of Canary Island Spanish antecedents, or on the other hand that documented contacts between the Isleños and speakers of other non-Canarian Spanish varieties have influenced Isleño's linguistic make-up. These claims are tested using …
Multiplication, Division, And Shift Instructions In Parallel Random Access Machines, Jerry L. Trahan, Michael C. Loui, Vijaya Ramachandran
Multiplication, Division, And Shift Instructions In Parallel Random Access Machines, Jerry L. Trahan, Michael C. Loui, Vijaya Ramachandran
Faculty Publications
We prove that polynomial time on a parallel random access machine (PRAM) with unit-cost multiplication and division or on a PRAM with unit-cost shifts is equivalent to polynomial space on a Turing machine (PSPACE). This extends the result that polynomial time on a basic PRAM is equivalent to PSPACE to hold when the PRAM is allowed multiplication or division or unrestricted shifts. It also extends to the PRAM the results that polynomial time on a random access machine (RAM) with multiplication is equivalent to PSPACE and that polynomial time on a RAM with shifts (that is, a vector machine) is …
Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Organometallic Complexes, Ae Ja Kim
Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Organometallic Complexes, Ae Ja Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Solid-state NMR spectroscopy has been used to obtain information about electronic structure and molecular geometry for some organometallic complexes. The principal elements of the 13C chemical shielding tensor for a dimetallocyclopropane unit and three square-planar metal cyanides have been determined from a nonlinear least squares fit of the chemical shift powder pattern. For the dimetallocyclopropane unit, the orientation of the chemical shielding tensor with respect to the molecular axis has been assigned based on the dipolar coupling tensor. The principal elements of the 13P chemical shielding tensor for three binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes have been obtained from a …

Nietzsche And Heraclitus, Virginia Lyle Jennings Howard
Nietzsche And Heraclitus, Virginia Lyle Jennings Howard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nietzshe's philosophical ideas are closely based upon his early studies of Greek thought. Unless his philosophy is approached from the standpoint of its foundation in the ancient Greeks, Heraclitus in particular, then it can be difficult to gain a coherent picture of Nietzsche's thought. In Heraclitus he found an affirmation of precisely what he loved about the ancient Greek way of life, its most fundamental concept: the contest. The Greeks embrace their apparently terrible characteristics and control them with a rule-governed contest. In the same way Heraclitus's universe consists of opposites which strive for dominion, not through wars of annihilation, …
The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield
The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the circumstances surrounding and the rhetoric involved in the cold fusion controversy begun on March 23, 1989, when two University of Utah electrochemists, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons, announced by press conference the discovery of room-temperature nuclear fusion. The dissertation seeks to determine to what extent a rhetorical analysis of cold fusion discourse may increase understanding of the controversy; the success of Fleischmann and Pons as scientific rhetors; the ways in which scientists' attitudes, values, and assumptions manifest themselves in the discourse; and finally, what may be learned about scientific discourse in general by examining the cold …

Dietary Restraint, Disinhibition Of Eating, And Resting Metabolic Rate In Women., Olga J. Lawson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of control (dieting) and loss of control over eating (overeating) on resting metabolic rate (RMR) were examined in a sample of 44 normal premenopausal women. A 2 (Restraint: High and Low) x 2 (Disinhibition: High and Low) design was utilized. Subjects were selected by their scores on the restraint and disinhibition scales of Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (Stunkard & Messick, 1985). The four groups were: women who alternated between dieting and overeating (HR/HD); women who dieted without overeating (HR/LD); women who did not diet or overeat (LR/LD); and women who did not diet and repeatedly overate (LR/HD). Body …

Community Versus The Imperial Mind: Images Of Civil Strife In Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun"., Henry Michael W Russell
Community Versus The Imperial Mind: Images Of Civil Strife In Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun"., Henry Michael W Russell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun allegorically represents the crisis of civil order in the American Republic in the 1850s foreshadowing the Civil War that erupted a year after the novel's publication. Hawthorne's last completed romance, set in Rome, suggests Americans must judge themselves against the community and continuity embodied in the European culture they had recently cast off. Challenging Emerson's doctrine that man may have an original relationship to history and the Creator, Hawthorne undermines the Founders' great idea: that an assembly of men could discover and formulate--in an act of the human mind--self-evident, inalienable rights that govern political and …
Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Among Mentally Retarded Children., Virginia Elaine Fee
Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Among Mentally Retarded Children., Virginia Elaine Fee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Teachers completed the CTRS-39 on 100 boys assigned to one of four groups based on IQ and scores on a DSM-III-R checklist of the symptoms for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (AD-HD). The groups included a normal control group, children with AD-HD, mentally retarded children, and mentally retarded children with AD-HD. There were no significant differences between the AD-HD group and the mentally retarded AD-HD group on all but one of the Conners' Factors and no significant differences on the IOWA Conners' Scales that were extracted from the CTRS-39. Mentally retarded children in general were found to be more anxious than their …
Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink
Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I explore the relationship between partisan votes and partisan seat allocation in U.S. state lower-house elections. Specifically, I measure the representational form (the rate of partisan seat changes given particular partisan vote changes) and partisan bias (asymmetry in the seats-votes relationship) of 441 lower-house state legislative elections in 46 states from 1968 to 1987. I then test a number of hypotheses that have been advanced to explain variation in representational form and partisan bias. Values for representational form and partisan bias are generated by creating simulations from actual election results. I simulate seat gains made by Republicans given one percent …
Improving Long-Term Adherence To Fluid Restrictions In Hemodialysis Patients., Kevin Dale Everett
Improving Long-Term Adherence To Fluid Restrictions In Hemodialysis Patients., Kevin Dale Everett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goals of this project were to investigate factors that predicted nonadherence to fluid restrictions for patients on hemodialysis, and to evaluate a relatively long-term behavioral intervention to improve adherence to recommended fluid requirements. One hundred forty-one subjects were recruited from outpatient dialysis clinics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In the prediction study, several medical and demographic variables as well as psychological variables of health locus of control, depressed mood, and social support were placed into a regression equation to determine the variance of fluid noncompliance predicted. It was found that variables of being male, educated, younger, and having an external …

This study examined differing perceptions of teachers and parents pertaining to frequency and importance of social skills and problem behaviors in preschool children. Specifically, the present investigation considered social skills of preschool children considered to be At-Risk for educationally handicapping conditions as well as a group of Typical preschool children. Both teacher and parent ratings on the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) (Gresham & Elliott, 1990) and the revised Conners Rating Scales (CRS), (Goyette, Conners, & Ulrich, 1978) were obtained from a sample of 95 preschool children. Fifty-two subjects were enrolled in an at-risk preschool program (i.e., Head Start) and …
Metaphor Within/Without Metaphysics: Nietzsche, Heidegger, And Derrida., Jonggab Kim
Metaphor Within/Without Metaphysics: Nietzsche, Heidegger, And Derrida., Jonggab Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The contemporary preoccupation with metaphor lies in its capability of deconstructing and disempowering metaphysics, and of creating a logic of uncertainty or a Derridian logic of supplements in opposition to the logic of identity and of non-contradiction. As a figure of speech saying one thing but meaning something else, metaphor contains in itself a certain alterity and otherness which resists a logical identity as well as a systematic philosophy. In my study of metaphor in the texts of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida, I inquire into the problematic relation or difference between philosophy and metaphor, focusing on how the former is …

Specific and sensitive amplification of major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene (ompA) DNA sequences of Chlamydia species with various MOMP genotypes was achieved by a two-step polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Degenerate, inosine-containing oligonucleotide primers homologous to the 5' and 3' ends of the translated regions of all chlamydial MOMP genes were used in a PCR to amplify a DNA fragment of approximately 1,120 bp. A portion of this DNA fragment was amplified in a second genus-specific reaction that yielded a DNA fragment of approximately 930 bp. A pair of degenerate oligonucleotide primers homologous to internal sequences of the primary DNA …

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The phase equilibria of supercritical carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon mixtures were studied. Correlation techniques for vapor-liquid and solid-fluid equilibria were studied for binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures using existing experimental data. Experimental investigation and correlation of the experimental data were carried out for solid-liquid equilibria of light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures, and CO$\sb2,$ light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures. A new technique of vapor-liquid equilibrium calculation by the activity coefficient method was developed and applied to binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures. The extrapolated vapor pressure of CO$\sb2$ was used for calculation of the fugacity of pure hypothetical liquid CO$\sb2$ and for …
Three Essays On International Linkages Of The Korean Economy., Jai-Ki Lee
Three Essays On International Linkages Of The Korean Economy., Jai-Ki Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay investigates whether the long run version of purchasing power parity (PPP) holds between Korea and its two major trading partners--the U.S. and Japan. The PPP relationship is examined using cointegration tests, which are proper to see the departures from the long run equilibrium. The second essay examines the empirical relationship between real exchange rates and interest rate differentials in the Korean-U.S. as well as the Korean-Japanese economies. This relationship is also examined using cointegration tests. The third essay examines how foreign economic shocks affect the Korean economy and analyzes the channels …
Transgenic Rice Plants Containing A Chlorsulfuron Resistance Gene, A Hygromycin Resistance Gene And The Maizeactivator Transposable Element., Zhijian Li
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A mutant Arabidopsis acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene csr-1-1, conferring chlorsulfuron resistance, was tested in transgenic rice to develop an alternative selectable marker for rice transformation. Up to a 200-fold increase in chlorsulfuron resistance was detected in transgenic rice calli expressing the mutant ALS gene under control of the CaMV 35S promoter. Efficient selection of resistant protoplast colonies was achieved by using 10 to 50 nM of chlorsulfuron after transformation with the 35S/ALS gene. Fertile transgenic rice plants were successfully recovered from 35S/ALS-containing transformants. These results demonstrated that the 35S/ALS gene could be used as a selectable marker gene in rice …
A Study On Low-Frequency Variability In Current And Sea Level In The Lombok Strait And Adjacent Region., Dharma Arief
A Study On Low-Frequency Variability In Current And Sea Level In The Lombok Strait And Adjacent Region., Dharma Arief
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Current meter data in the mid-Lombok Strait region in 1985 show that 42% of the variance in the currents is within the intraseasonal frequency band (10-100 day-1). It is about two times the variance of the tidal currents. This intraseasonal variability appeared as episodic northward flows of 20 to 80 cm/s recurring every 20 to 60 days. Our data indicate these northward flows are driven by episodes of sea-level rise south of the Lombok Strait which are controlled by large scale westerly wind events in the Southeastern Indian Ocean. These northward flow events occur almost simultaneously with either a cyclone …
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although some of the most recent work in the field of multicultural education has acknowledged and begun to theorize about what has been called the new cultural politics of difference, problems concerning the very notions of marginality, boundaries, and their accompanying "essentialist" thought remain undertheorized. It is my intention to bring discussions about marginality and essentialism from literary theory, feminist psychoanalytic theory and poststructuralist philosophy more explicitly into the conversation about multicultural curriculum theorizing. In this study I have attempted to further develop this conversation around notions of "translation" as generated by philosophers Michel Serres (1982) and John Rajchmann (1991) …
The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan
The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of organoclay adsorption on the leaching performance of solidified organic wastes was researched. Adsorption isotherms were developed for the adsorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), nitrobenzene (NB), and phenol by five different organoclays. Simulated liquid wastes containing DCB, NB, and phenol were solidified utilizing various combinations of Type I Portland cement and the five organoclays. The ratio of cement/clay utilized in each solidification matrix varied from 3/2 to 13/2. Linear and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were utilized to predict the leaching performance of samples cured for 7, 28, and 90 days. The ratio of the actual leachate concentrations compared to …
Nonlinear Inelastic Finite Element Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Emphasis On Shear And Torsion. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ananth Ramaswamy
Nonlinear Inelastic Finite Element Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Emphasis On Shear And Torsion. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ananth Ramaswamy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study a post-cracking formulation for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures has been proposed. The secant stiffness formulation considers the following nonlinearities: effects of tension-stiffening in concrete along the reinforcing direction(s), aggregate interlock model with variable shear based on crack confining stresses, and reduction of concrete compressive strength and stiffness after cracking as a function of stresses or strains. The cracking model is capable of simulating the effects of multiple non-orthogonal cracks at a point. This total stiffness formulation treats concrete unloading and reloading along a secant path and is capable of simulating the post-peak strain softening response. …
Failure Predictions In Repairable Multi-Component Systems., Woodrow Thomas Roberts Jr
Failure Predictions In Repairable Multi-Component Systems., Woodrow Thomas Roberts Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The subject of this research is the prediction of failures in repairable multi-component systems from statistical models that utilize the historical failure data for the systems. Failures occurring in repairable systems are examples of a series of discrete events which occur randomly in a continuum. Such stochastic point processes are analyzed using the statistics of event series. The Crow nonhomogenous Poisson process, NHPP, model is recognized by the reliability community as being one of the best models for repairable systems. The objective of this research is to show that the Crow NHPP model, with its overall failure predictions for a …
