Union Bound For Quantum Information Processing, Samad Khabbazi Oskouei, Stefano Mancini, Mark M. Wilde Jan 2019

Union Bound For Quantum Information Processing, Samad Khabbazi Oskouei, Stefano Mancini, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we prove a quantum union bound that is relevant when performing a sequence of binary-outcome quantum measurements on a quantum state. The quantum union bound proved here involves a tunable parameter that can be optimized, and this tunable parameter plays a similar role to a parameter involved in the Hayashi–Nagaoka inequality (Hayashi & Nagaoka 2003 IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 49, 1753–1768. (doi:10.1109/TIT.2003.813556)), used often in quantum information theory when analysing the error probability of a square-root measurement. An advantage of the proof delivered here is that it is elementary, relying only on basic properties of projectors, Pythagoras’ …

With the Surface Detector array (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory we can detect neutrinos with energy between 1017 eV and 1020 eV from point-like sources across the sky, from close to the Southern Celestial Pole up to 60 in declination, with peak sensitivities at declinations around ∼-53 and ∼+55, and an unmatched sensitivity for arrival directions in the Northern hemisphere. A search has been performed for highly-inclined air showers induced by neutrinos of all flavours with no candidate events found in data taken between 1 Jan 2004 and 31 Aug 2018. Upper limits on the neutrino flux from point-like …

© 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Aim: How do factors such as space, time, climate and other ecological drivers influence food web structure and dynamics? Collections of well-studied food webs and replicate food webs from the same system that span biogeographical and ecological gradients now enable detailed, quantitative investigation of such questions and help integrate food web ecology and macroecology. Here, we integrate macroecology and food web ecology by focusing on how ecogeographical rules [the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG), Bergmann's rule, the island rule and Rapoport's rule] are associated with the architecture of food webs. © 2019 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Purpose: Teacher ratings were used to compare children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their typically developing peers on 2 subtypes of social withdrawal (shyness and unsociability). Measurement invariance analysis was utilized to determine if teachers rated the 2 groups using the same underlying construct for each of the rating scale items that have been designed to assess withdrawn behavior. Method: The Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (TBRS; C. H. Hart & Robinson, 1996) was administered to the teachers of 173 children with DLD and 182 typically developing children (age range: 5;0-12;11 years;months) to compare 2 …

A Comparison Between Domestic And International Graduate Students On Their Work Readiness At A Research University, Jeantyl Norze, Raymond Doe, Michael F. Burnett Jan 2019

A Comparison Between Domestic And International Graduate Students On Their Work Readiness At A Research University, Jeantyl Norze, Raymond Doe, Michael F. Burnett

Faculty Publications

One critical issue in educational programs involves the extent to which graduates are ready to begin employment at program completion. Additionally, most research universities make deliberate efforts to enroll students from other countries. An important question regarding the effectiveness of the programs in these universities is whether the international students have comparable preparation and “Work-Readiness” as the domestic students. This study revealed that on several of the measures associated with “Work-Readiness“ international students had lower levels of “Readiness” than domestic students. Also, other differences were found in the groups on issues such as internship experiences and involvement in scholarly activities.

Barbituric Derivative Nanoaggregates With Aggregation-Induced Emission And Mechanofluorochromism, Xi Su, Hanjun Zhang, Kaiyue You, Hua Wang, Yuezhi Cui, William W. Yu

Faculty Publications

© 2019 Xi Su et al. Three new nonplanar barbituric derivatives, named as TTB, TTTB, and TOB, were synthesized. The D-π-A type conjugated compounds showed obvious intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, which was evidenced by theoretical calculations and spectral analyses. All of them exhibited aggregation induced emission (AIE) when formed nanoaggregates. These nanoaggregates also showed reversible mechanofluorochromism (MFC). Their red light emission became deep red after grinding and then recovered with dichloromethane fuming. Hence, a strategy to fabricate mechanofluorochromic nanoaggregate phosphors via nonplanar π-skeleton and steric effect was demonstrated, and these nanophosphors possess potentials for mechanosensors and anticounterfeiting technology.

A Proposed Framework For The Evaluation Of Academic Librarian Scholarship, Rachel Borchardt, Polly Boruff-Jones, Sigrid Kelsey, Jennifer Matthews Jan 2019

A Proposed Framework For The Evaluation Of Academic Librarian Scholarship, Rachel Borchardt, Polly Boruff-Jones, Sigrid Kelsey, Jennifer Matthews

Faculty Publications

The ACRL Impactful Scholarship and Metrics Task Force has created a framework draft that is designed to help librarians and libraries contextualize their impact within academic librarianship. To create this framework, the task force studied existing disciplinary models, institutional guidelines, and surveyed academic librarians. The task force discovered few standard practices regarding impact measurement from disciplinary societies or in institutional documentation, but did find some larger models outlining distinct impact areas. The proposed framework outlines evaluation in two primary impact areas for academic librarians, scholarly and practitioner impact, with suggested metrics for a range of research outputs in each category. …

River Of Death: The Chickamauga Campaign: Vol. I The Fall Of Chattanooga, John L.S. Daley Jan 2019

River Of Death: The Chickamauga Campaign: Vol. I The Fall Of Chattanooga, John L.S. Daley

Civil War Book Review

Robertson sets the scene for the Union's only major defeat in the Western Theater mainly by giving the fog of war its due, especially that part emanating from flawed staff work, poor communication, and personal grudges. Although this first volume stops short of the culminating battle, he helps us see through some of that fog. First, by providing background information on every commander in the contending armies down to brigade and sometimes regimental level, he elucidates the human factor as few recent campaign histories have. Second, a painstakingly detailed day-by-day narrative enables the reader to understand what commanders knew and …

Borders Of Engagement: Rethinking Scholarship, Activism, And The Academy, Bryan J. Mccann Jan 2019

Borders Of Engagement: Rethinking Scholarship, Activism, And The Academy, Bryan J. Mccann

Faculty Publications

The rhetorical norms around scholarly engagement presume that scholars participate in activist work outside their professional spaces. The avatar of the activist-scholar is the energetic graduate student who fulfills their academic responsibilities while also pursuing activist interests in the “community.” This chapter argues the presumption that activist rhetoricians and other scholars must traverse the border between academy and community reifies the border between the engaged scholar and academia itself. Rhetorical studies, and higher education generally, have always to some degree been invested in traversing the campus-community border. Rhetorical studies, both its communication and composition manifestations, came of age alongside the …

The Role Of Talker Familiarity In Auditory Distraction, Brittan A. Barker, Emily M. Elliott Jan 2019

The Role Of Talker Familiarity In Auditory Distraction, Brittan A. Barker, Emily M. Elliott

Faculty Publications

The current research employed a classic irrelevant sound effect paradigm and investigated the talker-specific content of the irrelevant speech. Specifically, we aimed to determine if the participants' familiarity with the irrelevant speech's talker affected the magnitude of the irrelevant sound effect. Experiment 1 was an exploration of talker familiarity established in a natural listening environment (i.e., a university classroom) in which we manipulated the participants' relationships with the talker. In Experiment 2, we manipulated the participants' familiarity with the talker via 4 days of controlled exposure to the target talker's audio recordings. For both Experiments 1 and 2, a robust …

What We Know About Team Dynamics For Long-Distance Space Missions: A Systematic Review Of Analog Research, Suzanne T. Bell, Shanique G. Brown, Tyree Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Background: To anticipate the dynamics of future long-distance space exploration mission (LDSEM) teams, research is conducted in analog environments (e.g., Antarctic expeditions, space chamber simulations), or environments that share key contextual features of LDSEM such as isolation and confinement. We conducted a systematic review of research conducted on teams in LDSEM-analog environments to identify which factors have been examined with quantitative research, and to summarize what the studies reveal about team dynamics in LDSEM-analog environments. Methods: We used a comprehensive search strategy to identify research on teams that lived and worked together. Data on team dynamics were extracted where possible, …

Progesterone Alters The Bovine Uterine Fluid Lipidome During The Period Of Elongation, Constantine A. Simintiras, José M. Sánchez, Michael Mcdonald, Pat Lonergan Jan 2019

Progesterone Alters The Bovine Uterine Fluid Lipidome During The Period Of Elongation, Constantine A. Simintiras, José M. Sánchez, Michael Mcdonald, Pat Lonergan

Faculty Publications

Successful bovine pregnancy establishment hinges on conceptus elongation, a key reproductive phenomenon coinciding with the period during which most pregnancies fail. Elongation is yet to be recapitulated in vitro, whereas in vivo it is directly driven by uterine secretions and indirectly influenced by prior circulating progesterone levels. To better understand the microenvironment evolved to facilitate this fundamental developmental event, uterine fluid was recovered on Days 12–14 of the oestrous cycle – the window of conceptus elongation initiation – from cycling heifers supplemented, or not, with progesterone. Subsequent lipidomic profiling of uterine luminal fluid by advanced high-throughput metabolomics revealed the consistent …

Aspects Of Embryo-Maternal Communication In Establishment Of Pregnancy In Cattle, José M. Sánchez, Constantine A. Simintiras, Patrick Lonergan Jan 2019

Aspects Of Embryo-Maternal Communication In Establishment Of Pregnancy In Cattle, José M. Sánchez, Constantine A. Simintiras, Patrick Lonergan

Faculty Publications

Establishment of pregnancy in mammals requires reciprocal molecular communication between the conceptus and endometrium that modifies the endometrial transcriptome and uterine luminal milieu to support pregnancy. Due to the small size of the early embryo and elongating conceptus relative to the volume of the uterine lumen, collection of endometrium adjacent to the developing conceptus is difficult following conventional uterine flushing methods in cattle. Use of endometrial explants in culture can overcome this challenge and reveal information about the dialogue between the developing embryo and the uterus. The aim of this short review is to summarize some of our recent findings …

Inhibition Of Selected Pathogens Inoculated On The Surface Of Catfish Fillets By High Molecular Weight Chitosan Coating, Baris Karsli, Emre Caglak, Dapeng Li, Nancy K. Rubio, Marlene Janes, Witoon Prinyawiwatkul

Faculty Publications

Antibacterial activity of high molecular weight water-soluble (HMWWS) chitosan (800 kDa) was investigated against four Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes) bacteria. Catfish fillets were surface-inoculated with these food-borne pathogens and coated with chitosan dissolved in aspartic acid (AS) or acetic acid (AC) solution at different concentrations (1% or 3%). Samples were stored at 4 °C for 8 days, except for those inoculated with Vibrio species (10 °C for 6 days). Overall, the most effective coating treatment was the 3% HMWWS chitosan in AS solution (800AS3%). Compared with …

An Actin-Depolymerizing Factor From The Halophyte Smooth Cordgrass, Spartina Alterniflora (Saadf2), Is Superior To Its Rice Homolog (Osadf2) In Conferring Drought And Salt Tolerance When Constitutively Overexpressed In Rice, Sonali Sengupta, Venkata Mangu, Luis Sanchez, Renesh Bedre, Rohit Joshi, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Niranjan Baisakh

Faculty Publications

Actin-depolymerizing factors (ADFs) maintain the cellular actin network dynamics by regulating severing and disassembly of actin filaments in response to environmental cues. An ADF isolated from a monocot halophyte, Spartina alterniflora (SaADF2), imparted significantly higher level of drought and salinity tolerance when expressed in rice than its rice homologue OsADF2. SaADF2 differs from OsADF2 by a few amino acid residues, including a substitution in the regulatory phosphorylation site serine-6, which accounted for its weak interaction with OsCDPK6 (calcium-dependent protein kinase), thus resulting in an increased efficacy of SaADF2 and enhanced cellular actin dynamics. SaADF2 overexpression preserved the actin filament organization …

Comparative Functional And Phylogenomic Analyses Of Host Association In The Remoras (Echeneidae), A Family Of Hitchhiking Fishes, C. P. Kenaley, A. Stote, W. B. Ludt, P. Chakrabarty Jan 2019

Comparative Functional And Phylogenomic Analyses Of Host Association In The Remoras (Echeneidae), A Family Of Hitchhiking Fishes, C. P. Kenaley, A. Stote, W. B. Ludt, P. Chakrabarty

Faculty Publications

The family Echeneidae consists of eight species of marine fishes that hitchhike by adhering to a wide variety of vertebrate hosts via a sucking disc. While several studies have focused on the interrelationships of the echeneids and the adhesion performance of a single species, no clear phylogenetic hypothesis has emerged and the morphological basis of adhesion remains largely unknown. We first set out to resolve the interrelationships of the Echeneidae by taking a phylogenomic approach using ultraconserved elements. Then, within this framework, we characterized disc morphology through μ-CT analysis, evaluated host specificity through an analysis of host phylogenetic distance, and …

Behavioral Health Risk And Resilience Among International Students In The United States: A Study Of Sociodemographic Differences, Youn Kyoung Kim, Arati Maleku, Catherine Lemieu, Xi Du, Zibei Chen

Faculty Publications

Using a resilience framework, the current cross-sectional study examined indicators of behavioral health risk and resilience among U.S. international students (N=322) across key sociodemographic characteristics. A multimethod approach was used to collect data with both an online platform and paper-based survey instrument. Results showed that higher levels of acculturative stress were reported by older students, females, undergraduates, students who lived with their families, and those who had resided in the US longer than 2 years. Findings underscore the importance of culturally relevant screening and prevention strategies that target resilience and other protective factors to reduce health risk and encourage well-being …

Domain Decomposition For Quasi-Periodic Scattering By Layered Media Via Robust Boundary-Integral Equations At All Frequencies, Carlos Pérez-Arancibia, Stephen P. Shipman, Catalin Turc, Stephanos Venakides Jan 2019

Domain Decomposition For Quasi-Periodic Scattering By Layered Media Via Robust Boundary-Integral Equations At All Frequencies, Carlos Pérez-Arancibia, Stephen P. Shipman, Catalin Turc, Stephanos Venakides

Faculty Publications

We develop a non-overlapping domain decomposition method (DDM) for scalar wave scattering by periodic layered media. Our approach relies on robust boundary-integral equation formulations of Robin-to-Robin (RtR) maps throughout the frequency spectrum, including cutoff (or Wood) frequencies. We overcome the obstacle of non-convergent quasi-periodic Green functions at these frequencies by incorporating newly introduced shifted Green functions. Using the latter in the definition of quasi-periodic boundary-integral operators leads to rigorously stable computations of RtR operators. We develop Nyström discretizations of the RtR maps that rely on trigonometric interpolation, singularity resolution, and fast convergent windowed quasi-periodic Green functions. We solve the tridiagonal …

A Finite Element Method For A Phase Field Model Of Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets, Amanda E. Diegel, Shawn W. Walker Jan 2019

A Finite Element Method For A Phase Field Model Of Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets, Amanda E. Diegel, Shawn W. Walker

Faculty Publications

We develop a novel finite element method for a phase field model of nematic liquid crystal droplets. The continuous model considers a free energy comprised of three components: the Ericksen’s energy for liquid crystals, the Cahn-Hilliard energy representing the interfacial energy of the droplet, and an anisotropic weak anchoring energy that enforces a condition such that the director field is aligned perpendicular to the interface of the droplet. Applications of the model are for finding minimizers of the free energy and exploring gradient flow dynamics. We present a finite element method that utilizes a special discretization of the liquid crystal …

Michigan’S War: The Civil War In Documents, Kim Crawford

Civil War Book Review

Students, researchers and readers interested in the Wolverine State’s contributions and roles in the Civil War have had plenty of sources available to them in local libraries over the years, some of them good ones – from reference volumes and bibliographies published by the Michigan Civil War Centennial Observance Commission and Wayne State University in the 1960s to a number of several annotated and anecdotal histories over the years for general readers by Michigan authors and scholars. Some of these titles, books by Richard Bak, Roger Rosentreter, Frederick Williams, Frank Woodford, and Jack Dempsey, appear in the bibliography of military …
