Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar Jan 1984

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to investigate the processes of socio-economic change that have affected the major ethnic groups in Manipur, mainly the subsistence level tribals and the Meitei peasantry; the strategies adopted by these groups, and individuals within the groups, to cope with the changed environment; and the spatial expression of these processes of change in varying patterns of development. Manipur, a polyethnic state in northeastern India, is currently the scene of hostilities among the different ethnic groups. The study tests the hypothesis that the underlying cause of these conflicts is the difference in the levels of development of the …

"They Fought Splendidly!": The Struggle For Port Hudson (Civil War, Louisiana, Military)., Lawrence Lee Hewitt Jan 1984

"They Fought Splendidly!": The Struggle For Port Hudson (Civil War, Louisiana, Military)., Lawrence Lee Hewitt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the Confederate occupation of Port Hudson, Louisiana, and the Union efforts to capture the bastion during the period August 1862-July 1863. Though it recounts the garrison life of the soldiers, it emphasizes governments. Throughout the period under consideration, the Confederate government's objective in garrisoning Port Hudson and Vicksburg was to maintain the vital Red River supply-line. That waterway facilitated the east-west flow of manpower, munitions and foodstuffs between the heart of the Confederacy and the Trans-Mississippi. The United States government recognized the importance of this supply-line and made control of the Mississippi River one of its primary …

A Comparison Of Chronic And Transient Loneliness On The Variables Of Anxiety, Depression And Self-Esteem., Jeanne Lee George Jan 1984

A Comparison Of Chronic And Transient Loneliness On The Variables Of Anxiety, Depression And Self-Esteem., Jeanne Lee George

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to determine whether chronic and transient loneliness are meaningful distinctions in loneliness research and to provide data to guide future investigations. To do this, the study differentiated people who reported chronic loneliness from those who reported transient or no experience with loneliness and compared them on the characteristics of trait anxiety, self-esteem, and depression. The subjects were 281 student volunteers, ages 18 to 25, who were enrolled in undergraduate psychology classes at Louisiana State University. Subjects categorized themselves as chronically lonely, transiently lonely, or never lonely on the Personal History of Loneliness Questionnaire (PHOL). Current loneliness was …

Typicality And Familiarity Effects In Children's Memory: The Interaction Of Processing And The Knowledge Base., Gary Todd Rosenthal Jan 1984

Typicality And Familiarity Effects In Children's Memory: The Interaction Of Processing And The Knowledge Base., Gary Todd Rosenthal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Third- and sixth-graders and adults participated in an experiment based upon Hunt and Einstein's (1981) theory which relates study activities or processing task to subsequent memory performance. Participants performed a processing task designed to emphasize either relational or item-specific information. In addition, the information about the words available in each subject's knowledge base was measured in two ways: relational information was assessed with a typicality rating task and item-specific information was assessed with an attribute listing task. The experiment consisted of three phases. In the first phase subjects performed one of two processing tasks on a list containing typical, atypical …

Job Satisfaction Of Vocational Agriculture Teachers In The Southeastern United States., Abdul Patah Bin Abdul Malek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Job satisfaction of vocational agriculture teachers in the Southeastern United States was examined. A total of 355 teachers from seven states--Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, Arkansas, and North Carolina--responded to the survey. Job satisfaction was measured by the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) which had six scales--work on present job, present pay, opportunities for promotion, supervision on present job, people on the job, and job in general. Fourteen demographic variables selected to be used as independent variables were age, highest degree completed, current annual salary, years of teaching experience, number of months employed per year, average number of students per class, …

Authority Vs. Power: Preference For Control Among Selected Church Structures., Raymond Leslie Houck Jan 1984

Authority Vs. Power: Preference For Control Among Selected Church Structures., Raymond Leslie Houck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Preference for hierarchical control (PHC) was studied among Catholic priests and religious (ordained and lay) and Baptist ministers in Louisiana and Gulf Coast area (n = 240). Groups represented decreasing strength of hierarchical church structure based on criteria of Mackey (1972). Strength of PHC, as measured by Cochran's (1975) Hierarchical Control Scale, should be influenced by the subject's membership involvement in church structure and his age. The Job Description Index (Smith, et al., 1969) measured job satisfaction (JS) as it related to PHC in the descending order of church structures. Because perceptions differ, JS was analyzed again as a function …

Faculty Publications

The complex of retinol with its carrier protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP) has been crystallized and its three-dimensional structure determined using X-ray crystallography. Its most striking feature is an eight-stranded up-and-down beta barrel core that completely encapsulates the retinol molecule. The retinol molecule lies along the axis of the barrel with the beta-ionone ring innermost and the tip of the isoprene tail close to the surface.

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson Jan 1984

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

A Hausdorff space X is said to be compactly generated (a /e-space) if and only if the open subsets V of X are precisely those subsets for which K n V is open in K for all compact subsets of K of X. We interpret this property as a duality property of the lattice 0{ X) of open sets of X, This view point allows the introduction of the concept of being quasicompactly generated for an arbitrary sober space X. The methods involve the duality theory of up-complete semilattices, and certain inverse limit constructions. In the process, we verify that …

A Harnack Estimate For Real Normal Surface Singularities, William A. Adkins Jan 1984

A Harnack Estimate For Real Normal Surface Singularities, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

According to Harnack’s theorem the number of topological components of the real part of a nonsingular projective curve X defined over R is at most g(X) + 1, where g(X) is the genus of X. The purpose of the present paper is to present two estimates which can be considered analogs of Harnack’s theorem for normal surface singularities defined over R. © 1984 by Pacific Journal of Mathematics.

George Vandenhoff, Nineteenth Century Elocutionist In America (Public Reader, Actor, "Art Of Elocution"; England; New York)., Bill Jaye Schooley Jan 1984

George Vandenhoff, Nineteenth Century Elocutionist In America (Public Reader, Actor, "Art Of Elocution"; England; New York)., Bill Jaye Schooley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three generations of Vandenhoffs were among featured players in theatres of both America and England for over a century, 1808 through 1913. George Vandenhoff, the subject of this study, was the eldest son of the accomplished British tragedian, John Vandenhoff. Lauded in England, George accepted a theatrical booking in New York in 1842 and later became a resident of that city. Dissatisfied with changing trends in the theatre and perceiving a growing interest in public readings of literature, Vandenhoff ultimately turned his attention from the actor's stage to the reader's platform. One of the first to introduce Shakespearean readings, he …

The Critical Connection: A Computer-Assisted Rhetorical Criticism Of The Message Of Harry F. Chapin., Ronald Robert Capps Jan 1984

The Critical Connection: A Computer-Assisted Rhetorical Criticism Of The Message Of Harry F. Chapin., Ronald Robert Capps

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study I examine the forms, contents, and functions of the rhetoric of singer-songwriter Harry Forster Chapin, in an attempt to more fully understand rhetorical theorist Kenneth Burke's assertion that his grandson was a uniquely powerful rhetorical figure who "could energize people, everyone, the world.". This study was conceived from the perspective of the "New Rhetoric," and therefore, it acknowledges that "identification" may serve as an "end" in itself. It is this willingness to accept "identification" as an "end" in itself that separates contemporary rhetorical theory from its classical counterpart. In my effort to remain faithful to Chapin's lyrics, …

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins Jan 1984

Interactions Of Soybean Arthropods And Crop Weeds: Diversity, Moth Nutrition, And Stability (Foraging Behavior, Nectar Analysis, Lepidopterous)., Fred Lewis Collins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Weeds which occur in crop ecosystems may cause suppressive or stimulating effects on arthropod abundance. Yet, little is known about the weed-insect interactions in Louisiana soybean. A three-part study was conducted from 1980-1983 to measure the abundance of arthropods in soybean, Glycine max Merr., as affected by the presence of absence of various weeds. A survey of arthropod abundance was conducted in commercial soybean fields which were either weedy or weed-free in central and south central Louisiana during 1980. Weedy fields had greater abundance of spiders, Geocoris punctipes (Say), and Lebia analis Dejean. Late instar green cloverworm, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner, …

A Rhetorical Study Of Winthrop Rockefeller's Political Speeches, 1964-1971 (Arkansas)., Merrill Anway Jones Jan 1984

A Rhetorical Study Of Winthrop Rockefeller's Political Speeches, 1964-1971 (Arkansas)., Merrill Anway Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to analyze rhetorically the political speeches of Winthrop Rockefeller, 1964-1971. Criteria for the study were determined by the theories of Lloyd Bitzer, Ernest Bormann and Kenneth Burke, which as a whole, interrelated to give full understanding of Rockefeller's phenomenal political rise in Arkansas. Examined were the political conditions in Arkansas prior to Rockefeller's emergence as the Republican Party leader in 1964. Application of Bitzer's situational theory revealed that the controlling exigence, the lack of a two-party system, was the direct cause of other exigences such as poor racial conditions, poor educational standards, poor economic …

The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin Dec 1983

The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is comprised of two objectives. The first attempts to ethno-historically reconstruct the early historic culture of the Houma Indians of Louisiana based upon seventeenth and eighteenth century archival and documentary sources with attention being paid to such ethnographic aspects as Houma subsistence, social organization, and ceremonialism. The second objective, by way of utilizing additional historical documentation such as early cartographic evidence, predicts and locates historic Houma village sites. An archaeological examination and discussion of these sites is presented in terms of an attempt to diagnostically identify broad ethnic markers within the historic Houma material culture.

Molecular Cloning And Analysis Of The Cry1 Gene: A Yeast Ribosomal Protein Gene, John C. Larkin, John L. Woolford

Faculty Publications

Using cloned DNA from the vicinity of the yeast mating type locus (MAT) as a probe, the wild type allele of the cryptopleurine resistance gene CRY1 has been isolated by the technique of chromosome walking and has been shown to be identical to the gene for ribosomal protein 59. A recessive cryRl allele has also been cloned, using the integration excision method. The genetic distance from MAT to CRY1 is 2.2 cM, while the physical distance is 21 kb, giving a ratio of about 10kb/cM for this interval. The phenotypic expression of both plasmid borne alleles of the gene can be …

A Temporal View Of The Turnover Process: Application Of A Repeated Measures Design To Two Models Of Nurse Turnover., Albert Willard Holland Jr Jan 1983

A Temporal View Of The Turnover Process: Application Of A Repeated Measures Design To Two Models Of Nurse Turnover., Albert Willard Holland Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The principal objective of the present research was to examine Mobley's (1982) contention that a dynamic experimental design is necessary in order to advance our understanding of the cognitive and behavioral events which precede turnover. The one aspect of Mobley's contention tested here was the extent to which a repeated measures design contributes to the predictive power of existing models of turnover. A second objective was to conduct a competitive test between the Mobley, Horner and Hollingsworth (1978) and the Price and Mueller (1981b) models of nurse turnover. Four non-profit community general hospitals and two government-owned general hospitals provided the …

Strangers In The Land: The Southern Clergy And The Economic Mind Of The Old South., Kenneth Moore Startup Jan 1983

Strangers In The Land: The Southern Clergy And The Economic Mind Of The Old South., Kenneth Moore Startup

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The antebellum southern clergy has often been characterized as narrow-minded and reactionary with little or no social vision and with little or no commitment to social reformation. My study, which is based upon an expansive survey of the sermons and religious writings of protestant slave state ministers, reveals instead an insightful, critical, and outspoken clergy determined to change southern society; principally to turn southerners from materialism and greed to spirituality and altruism. In their attempt to reform southern society, they condemned explicitly what they considered the ostentation, arrogance, and selfishness of the upper classes and called for a more equitable …

Competitive Environment, Business Strategy, And Organization Structure: An Analysis Of Firm Performance., Masoud Hemmasi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research attempts to develop and empirically test an integrative model of business economic performance. The research framework includes certain concepts and relationships that emanate from the literature in Industrial Organization Economics, Business Policy, and Organization Theory. In general, the key tenet of the study is threefold: (a) that there are industry differences in types of challenges confronting top level management; (b) that strategic and organizational responses that different environmental challenges elicit are quite different and somewhat predictable; and (c) that the combination of the environmental, strategic, and organizational characteristics of the organizations affect their economic performance. The sample for …
