Non-Marine Atchafalaya Deltas: Processes And Products Of Interdistributary Basin Alluviation, South-Central Louisiana (Fluvial Deposits, Lacustrine)., Robert S. Tye Jan 1986

Non-Marine Atchafalaya Deltas: Processes And Products Of Interdistributary Basin Alluviation, South-Central Louisiana (Fluvial Deposits, Lacustrine)., Robert S. Tye

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Progradation of lacustrine deltas alluviated the interdistributary lowlands which occupy the transition zone between the alluvial valley and marine delta in the Atchafalaya Basin. Sediment introduced into the basin during the last 700 years by a major Mississippi River distributary has accumulated in the form of thin, regionally extensive deltas. Deltaic sedimentation is cyclic in nature. Rapid subsidence (basin downwarping and sediment compaction), in conjunction with lateral shifts in the site of deposition, creates vertically stacked deltaic wedges separated by backswamp deposits. One such delta prograded 6.5 km into Lake Fausse Pointe, grew to an area in excess of 29 …

A History And Analysis Of Selected National Urban League Discourse, 1910-1985., Dennis D. Cali Jan 1986

A History And Analysis Of Selected National Urban League Discourse, 1910-1985., Dennis D. Cali

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a critical analysis of selected annual conference addresses of National Urban League (NUL) executive directors. It may be regarded as a "movement study" inasmuch as it traces the conceptualization of an idea, equality, from 1910 to 1985. Richard Weaver's philosophy, theory, and critical methodology of rhetoric provide the analytical framework by which this study was conducted. Specifically Weaver's hierarchy of arguments, which may be taken as a model of his philosophy and theory, served as this dissertation's research tool. The hierarchy includes argumentation from four perspectives, ranking from ideal to base: genus, similitude, cause-effect, circumstances. The dissertation …

Response To Failure As Reflected In The Poetry Of G. M. Hopkins, His Contemporaries (Francis Thompson And Lionel Johnson), And The Moderns (William Butler Yeats, Ireland, T. S. Eliot)., Pushpa Naidu Parekh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of the poetic persona's responses to the experience of failure, as expressed in the poetry of G. M. Hopkins, his minor contemporaries (Francis Thompson and Lionel Johnson), and the moderns (particularly Dylan Thomas), actualizes the poet-text-reader interactions in the reading experience. Chapter one concentrates on the Hopkins persona as he responds to his failures in priesthood and poetry writing, the effects upon the reader, the reader's involvement in the outcome of the poem, and the parallels and divergences between Hopkins and the persona. Chapter two studies Hopkins' persona in his struggle to move from human isolation to human …

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson Jan 1986

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Textbooks are important representative statements of certified and legitimated knowledge within an academic discipline, and the manner in which introductory sociology textbooks assess society reflect the power and sophistication of theories in discerning social patterns and structures. That the pivotal historical event of the Vietnam War and its implications for contemporary American social institutions was virtually omitted in our sample of one hundred-twenty textbooks raises critical issues for sociology. Content analysis of Vietnam War era textbooks (1954-1975) revealed 75% of the sample, divided among four major research orienting paradigms extant in sociology, ignored mention of the war and only the …

Contribution To Power System Harmonic Analysis., Yahia Baghzouz Jan 1986

Contribution To Power System Harmonic Analysis., Yahia Baghzouz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In recent years, power system harmonic levels have increased significantly due to the ever-increasing use of nonlinear loads which primarily consist of power electronic devices. The effect of these harmonics on power system components represents a serious problem to utility companies and consumers. A survey of power system harmonics as generated mainly by static ac/dc power converters is presented. Aspects concerning harmonic injection, their effects on system components and harmonic reduction techniques are included. Harmonic analysis methodologies are discussed and compared in terms of efficiency and accuracy. The need of a stochastic treatment of harmonic voltages and currents is clearly …

Effect Of Ownership Structure On Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of Various Organizational Forms (Stochastic Frontier, Allocative Efficiency)., Daniel Omer Cote Jan 1986

Effect Of Ownership Structure On Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of Various Organizational Forms (Stochastic Frontier, Allocative Efficiency)., Daniel Omer Cote

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research aims at testing the effects of ownership structure on efficiency of various organizational forms: privately-owned regulated electric utilities (PR), publicly-owned electric utilities (PU), and consumer-owned cooperative electric utilities (CO). Because of the attenuation of their structure of property rights and high enforcement costs, it is expected that all three organizational forms (PR, PU, CO) will show some level of inefficiency. CO is expected to be more efficient than PR and PU since it shows: (a) more homogeneity of interest among principals; (b) more individual ownership claim over the assets; (c) a simpler political market (efficiency as the main …

Charlotte Perkins Stetson Gilman, A Voice For Progress And Perfection: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Addresses, 1883-1892., Stephen Robert Guempel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Amidst the social reform impulse of late nineteenth-century America, Charlotte Perkins Stetson--noted writer, lecturer, and social reformer--began her career as a spokeswoman for social justice. As such, she lectured to local religious groups, Nationalist clubs, women's clubs, and literary societies on a variety of subjects that included social ethics, family, motherhood, and art. In these many lectures and sermons, Stetson related her unyielding faith in and fervent expression of humanity's potential for perfectibility. This study analyzes six selected addresses delivered by Stetson between the years 1883 and 1892 in order to identify the rhetorical techniques she used to communicate her …

The Christian Preacher As Poet: A Method For Exposition Of Narrative Portions Of Scripture Based On Aristotle's "Poetics"., William Sherman Phillips Jr Jan 1986

The Christian Preacher As Poet: A Method For Exposition Of Narrative Portions Of Scripture Based On Aristotle's "Poetics"., William Sherman Phillips Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the thesis of this study that Aristotle's Poetics provides the basis for a method of exposition that is "distinctively appropriate" for preaching upon the narrative portions of Scripture. The relationship between Aristotelian poetics and narrative exposition of Scripture is examined in terms of the following two questions: (1) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the expository or interpretive need for narrative exposition of Scripture? (2) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the exhortatory or applicative need for narrative exposition of Scripture? The following arguments are made: (1) Aristotelian poetics provides the basis for a method of narrative exposition that unifies …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Comparability Of Reported Earnings Per Share Under Accounting Principles Board Opinion No. 15., Suzanne Resi Pinac-Ward

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Earnings per share (EPS) is considered by many to be one of the most important summary indicators presented in the financial statements. Many financial statement users rely on EPS as the most important single measure of corporate performance. Previous empirical evidence suggests that a strong link exists between EPS changes and stock price changes. The objective of this study was to determine if the provisions of APB 15 provide for consistent reporting of comparable EPS figures across preparers of financial statements. The application of alternative interpretations of provisions of APB 15 has the potential to produce materially different EPS figures. …

Para-Social Interaction, Rhetorical Sensitivity, And Television News Viewing., Michael Anthony Domingue Jan 1986

Para-Social Interaction, Rhetorical Sensitivity, And Television News Viewing., Michael Anthony Domingue

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to determine the relationship between para-social interaction (an imaginary interaction with mass media) with local and network news viewing and rhetorical sensitivity (an attitude toward encoding spoken messages). It was predicted that para-social interaction would be positively related to rhetorical sensitivity. The Rubin, Perse, and Powell PSI Scale was used to measure para-social interaction. The three internal scales of the Hart, Carlson and Eadie RHETSEN II Scale (the Noble Self Scale, the Rhetorical Reflector Scale and the Rhetorical Sensitivity Scale) were used to measure rhetorical sensitivity. 157 undergraduates enrolled in communication courses responded to scales. A canonical …

Models For The Study Of Intramolecular Interactions: Preparation, Structure And Reactivity Of 2-(2'-Acyloxyphenylethynyl)Benzoic Acids., Michael Allen Oliver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The hypothesis concerning orientational effects of carboxylate in general-base catalysis is discussed, and the first models that allow proton transfer to the syn lone-pair of the carboxylate during intramolecular general-base catalysis are designed, prepared, and tested. These models use a carbon backbone of two aryl groups linked by a two carbon bridge. The syntheses of 2-(2-hydroxyphenylethynyl)benzoic acid (24) and derivatives used in these studies are described. These derivatives were also needed to evaluate the ethynyl group as the bridge linking the aryls and to aid in the design of more complex models. The hydrolysis of the dichloroacetate ester (26) is …

The Rhetorical Drama Of Lyndon B. Johnson: A Burkean Analysis., David Stiles Shipley Jan 1986

The Rhetorical Drama Of Lyndon B. Johnson: A Burkean Analysis., David Stiles Shipley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study analyzes President Lyndon Johnson's Vietnam rhetoric during the escalation period of 1964-1965 to uncover what effect his place in history, his personality, and his political style had on presidential rhetoric in the twentieth century. For this purpose, the critical insights of Kenneth Burke are utilized not only to uncover what rhetoric Johnson used during this period but also what it meant to the American people and how it served the President's purposes. According to Burke, man views everything through a "fog of symbols." His dramatic critique of symbols, what is sometimes referred to as "logology," attempts to get …

The Effect Of Metacognitive Strategy Training On Critical Reading Ability., Jacqueline Means Parson Jan 1985

The Effect Of Metacognitive Strategy Training On Critical Reading Ability., Jacqueline Means Parson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to read materially critically is recognized as a goal of educators. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of training metacognitive strategies on critical reading ability. Critical reading was defined as the ability to judge or evaluate written materials and to compare them against some norm or standard. Metacognitive strategies encourage a conscious awareness of and/or control over one's own mental processes. A review of literature indicated that past researchers had considered critical reading as a distinct skill area, but more recently, educators have begun to recognize it as a part of the overall comprehension …

Host Responses To The Phenolic-Glycolipid-1 Antigen Of Mycobacterium Leprae (Elisa, Leprosy, Epidemiology, Armadillo, Human)., Richard W. Truman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Antibody responses to the apparently species specific phenolic-glycolipid-1 (Phen-Gl-1) antigen of Mycobacterium leprae were examined in humans and armadillos using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Statistical definitions for the interpretation of positive and negative reactions were derived. A retrospective serological survey of armadillos indicated that leprosy in the wild armadillo is a naturally acquired zoonosis. Presently 12.5% of the armadillos in 2 parishes in south central Louisiana have detectable IgM antibodies to Phen-Gl-1. Approximately 2.7% of these histologically exhibit clinical disease. Antibodies were not detected in Florida armadillo sera. Variations in prevalence rates were noted, and may be due to environmental …

An Attempt To Validate An Inventory From The Criteria Of Dsm-Iii., David Gilbert Perry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Criteria of DSM-III were used as source material for items in a psychopathology inventory series. The inventories provided DSM-III diagnoses by reproducing the DSM-III decision process through diagnostic keys. The personality disorders inventory (ADI) was chosen as initial research instrument. Forty-seven voluntary clients from two sites served as clinical subjects and 29 non-clinical volunteers, given special directions to avoid diagnosis, served as subjects for validity scales. Four clinical psychologists matched DSM-III criteria with ADI items in measurement of content validity. Results showed that the ADI was not a useful psychometric instrument in its present form. The ADI gave too many …
