Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary Jan 1997

Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary

Faculty Publications

Over the last decade, processor speed has become significantly higher than memory and disk speeds. Therefore, exploiting the memory hierarchy has emerged as a key problem in parallel computing. An out-of-core computation is one which operates on disk-resident data. This paper uses the concept of chain vectors for tiling out-of-core codes. The theory of chain vectors is discussed and extended, and their relation to reuse vectors is established. Then, chain vectors are used to optimize the tile size, shape, allocation and scheduling for out-of-core codes.

Etiology And Biological Control Of Seedling Disease In Water-Seeded Rice., Se-Chul Chun Jan 1997

Etiology And Biological Control Of Seedling Disease In Water-Seeded Rice., Se-Chul Chun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In order to assess the potential of biological control of rice seedling disease, detailed etiological information was required, i.e. when and for how long are seedlings susceptible and which portions of the seed and seedling are susceptible. Contaminant-free seeds were required for these studies. For this purpose, rice seeds were soaked for 2 hrs in freshly prepared 2.6% sodium hypochlorite adjusted to pH 7.0 with a final concentration of 0.5 M potassium phosphate. This treatment was not only very effective in disinfesting seeds but also seemed to promote seedling growth. On the basis of this observation, a study was conducted …

Potential For Glufosinate As A Selective Herbicide For Red Rice Control In Bar-Transformed Rice., Sujatha Sankula Jan 1997

Potential For Glufosinate As A Selective Herbicide For Red Rice Control In Bar-Transformed Rice., Sujatha Sankula

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A three year study was conducted to evaluate the herbicide glufosinate on BAR-transformed rice and on the weed red rice. Preliminary evaluations with 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha glufosinate on the BAR-transformed Gulfmont and Koshihikari rice varieties showed that both were resistant, but there was more injury to Koshihikari. Glufosinate at 2.2 kg ai/ha injured BAR-transformed Gulfmont rice more when applied to the 1- to 2-leaf stage (23-26%) than when applied to 3- to 4-leaf (13-19%) plants. The damage was least with boot stage applications (3-14%). Phytotoxicity to BAR-transformed Gulfmont rice was greater when 2.2 kg/ha glufosinate was combined with 0.4 …

Lex Scripta Et Lex Non Scripta: Tensions Between Law And Language In Late Fourteenth-Century England And Its Literature., Susanne Sara Thomas Jan 1997

Lex Scripta Et Lex Non Scripta: Tensions Between Law And Language In Late Fourteenth-Century England And Its Literature., Susanne Sara Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work explores the connections between Middle English literature and transitions occurring within the English legal system. It focuses on the way Chaucer and the Gawain-poet negotiate the tension between the legal potency of the written word and the spoken word. As the common law contains an ongoing negotiation between written and unwritten forms of law, the dissertation discusses the function and significance of the tension between the lex scripta and the lex non scripta. It argues that the increasing displacement of oral and written language in the legal realm is a source of considerable cultural anxiety, and this anxiety …

Knot Theory And The Dynamics Of Quantum General Relativity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Dec 1996

Knot Theory And The Dynamics Of Quantum General Relativity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We propose to interpret the action of the quantum Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity in the loop representation as a skein relation on the space of knots. Therefore, by considering knot polynomials that are compatible with that skein relation, one guarantees that all the quantum Einstein equations are solved. We give a particular example of such an invariant and discuss the consistency of the constraint algebra in this approach. © 1996 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Second-Order Perturbations Of A Schwarzschild Black Hole, Reinaldo J. Gleiser, Carlos O. Nicasio, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We study the even-parity ℓ = 2 perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole to second order. The Einstein equations can be reduced to a single linear wave equation with a potential and a source term. The source term is quadratic in terms of the first-order perturbations. This provides a formalism to address the validity of many first-order calculations of interest in astrophysics. © 1996 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Hemoglobin A2 (HbA2; α2δ2) is a powerful inhibitor of HbS (α2β2/(S) polymerization. However, HbA2 levels are normally low in sickle cell patients. We show that a major reason for low δ-globin gene expression is the defective CACCC box at -90 in the δ-globin promoter. When the CACCC box defect in δ is corrected, expression of an HS2 δ/Luciferase reporter is equivalent to HS2 β/Luciferase. Erythroid Krupple-like factor (EKLF), which binds to the CACCC box of the β-globin gene and activates high-level expression, does not bind to the normal δ-globin promoter. Our goal is to design a modified EKLF that binds …

Jet photoproduction, where the two highest transverse energy (ETjet) jets have ETjet above 6 GeV and a jet-jet invariant mass above 23 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at the HERA ep collider. Resolved and direct photoproduction samples have been separated. The cross section as a function of the angle between the jet-jet axis and the beam direction in the dijet rest frame has been measured for the two samples. The measured angular distributions differ markedly from each other. They agree with the predictions of QCD calculations, where the different angular distributions reflect the different spins of the …

SoxR is a transcription factor that governs a global defense against the oxidative stress caused by nitric oxide or excess superoxide in Escherichia coli. SoxR is a homodimer containing a pair of [2Fe-2S] clusters essential for its transcriptional activity, and changes in the stability of these metal centers could contribute to the activation or inactivation of SoxR in vivo. Herein we show that reduced glutathione (GSH) in aerobic solution disrupts the SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters, releasing Fe from the protein and eliminating SoxR transcriptional activity. This disassembly process evidently involves oxygen-derived free radicals. The loss of [2Fe-2S] clusters does not occur …

The production of φ mesons in the reaction e+p → e+φp (φ → K+K-), for 7 < Q2 < 25 GeV2 and for virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies (W) in the range 42-134 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy data at similar Q2, the results show that the γp → p0p cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the γ*p → p0p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of σ(φ)/σ(p0), which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 ± 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 ± 0.05 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q2 of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of ≈ 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q2 the value of 2/9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.

DNA sequences of neutral nuclear autosomal loci, compared across diverse human populations, provide a previously untapped perspective into the mode and tempo of the emergence of modern humans and a critical comparison with published clonally inherited mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome measurements of human diversity. We obtained over 55 kilobases of sequence from three autosomal loci encompassing Alu repeats for representatives of diverse human populations as well as orthologous sequences for other hominoid species at one of these loci. Nucleotide diversity was exceedingly low. Most individuals and populations were identical. Only a single nucleotide difference distinguished presumed ancestral alleles from …

Black Women's Listening: An Ethnography Of Listening In A Southern Inner-City Adult Learning Center., Jennifer Ann Falls Jan 1996

Black Women's Listening: An Ethnography Of Listening In A Southern Inner-City Adult Learning Center., Jennifer Ann Falls

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The research investigated the phenomenon of listening in the context of adult literacy education. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe listening from the points of view of African American women who were teachers and adult learners in a welfare reform program. Using ethnography as a research methodology, this two-year study explored listening as it occurred in the Writing Class, a classroom culture that was situated in a Southern, inner-city adult learning center (Spindler & Spindler, 1982). The study investigated women's assumptions about listening, their own listening behaviors, and the behaviors they expected of listeners. An aim …

The Effects Of Performance Feedback On Treatment Integrity In School-Based Consultation., Kevin Michael Jones Jan 1996

The Effects Of Performance Feedback On Treatment Integrity In School-Based Consultation., Kevin Michael Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relative effectiveness of traditional consultation, with and without performance feedback, on treatment integrity. Six teachers employed in a residential treatment community were responsible for treatment implementation. Treatment integrity was defined as the percentage of 2 min intervals during which contingent teacher attention for student on-task behavior was directly observed. Teacher and child behavior were monitored across baseline, traditional consultation, and consultation with performance feedback conditions in a multiple baseline design. In only one of six cases did mean levels of contingent teacher attention, following a Problem Identification Interview and Problem Analysis Interview (Bergan, 1977), exceed 35%. …

This study employs both quantitative and qualitative techniques to study the restructuring processes at the district, school, and teacher levels. The quantitative procedures include surveys used to distinguish between teachers's perceptions of highly and moderately restructured schools. Qualitative research techniques included interviews, observations, and document analysis to describe the restructuring. A new instrument, the Attributes of School Restructuring Scale (ASRS), was developed to measure teachers' knowledge about restructuring efforts and their involvement in the restructuring projects. The final version of the ASRS, included 48-items spread across three subscales: Budget/Finance, Governance/Decision-Making, and Curriculum/Instruction. The quantitative results from the statewide study indicated …

Pilot-Scale Solvent Sublation For The Removal Of Hydrophobic Compounds From Wastewaters., Jeffrey Scott Smith Jan 1996

Pilot-Scale Solvent Sublation For The Removal Of Hydrophobic Compounds From Wastewaters., Jeffrey Scott Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solvent sublation is a nonfoaming adsorptive bubble process which exploits the surface active nature of organic compounds in their removal from aqueous systems. Gas bubbles are introduced into an aqueous media and are buoyed upward to an immiscible organic solvent. As the bubbles rise, organic materials are selectively adsorbed from the aqueous phase and transported to the overlying, quiescent solvent layer. This dissertation studied three-phase, continuous solvent sublation of pyrene and pentachlorophenol from simulated wastewater at the pilot-scale. Steady-state removal efficiencies as high as 96% for pyrene and 94% for pentachlorophenol were demonstrated and were significantly greater than the corresponding …

Relationships Between Brain Biogenic Amines And Reproductive And Defense Behavior In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.)., Jeffrey Wayne Harris Jan 1996

Relationships Between Brain Biogenic Amines And Reproductive And Defense Behavior In Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.)., Jeffrey Wayne Harris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation represents an attempt to relate behavioral states of worker honey bees to brain levels of biogenic amines. The first chapter describes the results of experiments which indicated that brain levels of octopamine, dopamine and serotonin were affected by factors including the degree of handling stress, worker age, season of sampling and the source colony from which the workers were sampled. These results helped shape the methods employed in the subsequent chapters. The second and third chapters relate changes in brain dopamine levels to worker honey bee ovarian development. In particular, chapter II showed that an increase in brain …

Analysis Of The Influence Of Genotype On Cayenne Pepper Fruit-Receptacle Detachment., Kay P. Gersch Jan 1996

Analysis Of The Influence Of Genotype On Cayenne Pepper Fruit-Receptacle Detachment., Kay P. Gersch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two genotypes of cayenne pepper, Capsicum annuum L., were identified that differ significantly in ease of fruit detachment. Both greenhouse and field-grown plants of these genotypes, Cajun 1-9027 and Cap-9004, were investigated for differences in cell type and organization at the fruit-receptacle junction. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that mature fruit of Cajun 1-9027, which did not separate, exhibited a distinct region of sclerified cells that extended from the periphery of the fruit into the receptacle for at least 15 cell layers. In contrast, mature fruit of the more readily detachable Cap-9004 had fewer sclerified cells at the region of detachment. …

Conditioning The Auditory System With Continuous Versus Interrupted Noise Of Equal Acoustic Energy: Is Either Exposure More Protective?, Ruth Ann Skellett Jan 1996

Conditioning The Auditory System With Continuous Versus Interrupted Noise Of Equal Acoustic Energy: Is Either Exposure More Protective?, Ruth Ann Skellett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Prior exposure to moderate-level acoustic stimulation (conditioning) can reduce and/or prevent the deleterious effects of subsequent higher level exposures (Canlon et al., 1988; Campo et al., 1991). Both continuous and interrupted schedules of moderate-level noise have been used as conditioning exposures, and both schedules have been effective in providing protection against subsequent noise trauma. However, there is evidence to suggest that continuous noise exposures are more damaging to the cochlea than interrupted exposures of equal acoustic energy (Bohne et al., 1985, 1987), and moderate-level continuous and interrupted noise exposures differ in the pattern of auditory sensitivity change that they produce …

Training Parents To Facilitate Language Through Storybook Reading., Linda K. Crowe Jan 1996

Training Parents To Facilitate Language Through Storybook Reading., Linda K. Crowe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Six parent-child dyads participated in a single subject, multiple-baseline study evaluating the effectiveness of storybook reading as a context for parent training. Six children, ages 3;2 to 3;5 with specific language impairment, and their primary caregivers completed three-to-five baseline, eight-to-ten training, and two follow-up sessions. Parents were taught to use a complete reading cycle (CRC) based on a typical parent-child storybook reading format described by Ninio & Bruner (1978). The CRC consisted of four steps: (a) an attentional vocative to establish joint focus or topic for discussion, (b) a query to elicit a verbal response about the topic, (c) a …

Mechanism Of Nitrogen Fixation: Use Of Carbon Monoxide To Probe Nitrogenase Activity., Linda Margaret Cameron Jan 1996

Mechanism Of Nitrogen Fixation: Use Of Carbon Monoxide To Probe Nitrogenase Activity., Linda Margaret Cameron

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The inhibitor CO was used to investigate the mechanism of Mo and V nitrogenase. While low pressures of CO enhanced, high pressures inhibited V nitrogenase-catalyzed C$\rm\sb2H\sb6$ formation. This is not the case for $\rm C\sb2H\sb4$ formation, where the rate of electron flux determined if CO acted as an enhancer or inhibitor. A two-site model is proposed, in which CO binding to one site enhances, and CO binding to both sites inhibits product formation. Replacement of CO(g) by Ar or $\rm C\sb2H\sb2$ resulted in correlated decay of hi-CO and development of lo-CO EPR signals, suggesting that the two signals arise from …

Design And Analysis Of Reduced-Connection Multiple Bus Systems: A Probabilistic Approach., Najmul Karim Jan 1996

Design And Analysis Of Reduced-Connection Multiple Bus Systems: A Probabilistic Approach., Najmul Karim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the dissertation we have proposed the first systematic and formal approach to reduce connectivity of general purpose multiple bus systems. The approach is based on a probabilistic technique. The hypothesis on which this dissertation is based stipulates that bus connectivity in multiple bus systems can be much reduced by removing connections which are only needed for highly improbable request patterns. With this approach, performance comparable to that of the original multiple bus system could be achieved while significantly reducing memory bus connectivity. The new architecture thus obtained (Probabilistically load reduced connection multiple bus system, or PRMB in short) might …

Analyzing Traffic And Multicast Switch Issues In An Atm Network., Youngcheol Oh Jan 1996

Analyzing Traffic And Multicast Switch Issues In An Atm Network., Youngcheol Oh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation attempts to solve two problems related to an ATM network. First, we consider packetized voice and video sources as the incoming traffic to an ATM multiplexer and propose modeling methods for both individual and aggregated traffic sources. These methods are, then, used to analyze performance parameters such as buffer occupancy, cell loss probability, and cell delay. Results, thus obtained, for different buffer sizes and number of voice and video sources are analyzed and compared with those generated from existing techniques. Second, we study the priority handling feature for time critical services in an ATM multicast switch. For this, …

A Reusability Model That Creates Design Frameworks Using A Formal Specification Clustering Approach., Youwen Ouyang Jan 1996

A Reusability Model That Creates Design Frameworks Using A Formal Specification Clustering Approach., Youwen Ouyang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Software reuse has been advocated as a technique with great potential to increase software development productivity, reduce development cycle time, and improve product quality. Challenges for successful reuse include populating the repository with the right type of components, representing and organizing the components in a way that the components are easy to be retrieved, and providing mechanisms to compare the candidate components with the requirement of the new component and to assist adaptation. While many existing researches are emphasizing one or two challenges, this research proposes a reusability model that targets all challenges in reuse. The inspiration for the model …

Designing Diagnosable Distributed Programs., Amit Anil Nanavati Jan 1996

Designing Diagnosable Distributed Programs., Amit Anil Nanavati

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The difficulty in debugging distributed programs motivates the development of formal methods for designing distributed programs that are easier to debug and maintain. We address state identification problem for distributed systems using the finite state I/O automaton model. A state S is identified based on the unique event sequences starting at S, called distinguishing sequences. An automaton is diagnosable if every state has a distinguishing sequence. A distributed program may not be diagnosable even if its components are diagnosable. Non-dignosable automata can, in some cases, be converted to a diagnosable form by relabelling some of its transitions in a way …

Two experiments were performed to measure the prevalence of single- and double-hormone labeled gonadotropes, lactotropes, somatotropes, and mammosomatotropes. In Experiments 1 and 2, pituitaries from three intact pony mares were processed for ultrastructural evaluation of cells stained for luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), and growth hormone (GH). Primary antibodies and gold-conjugated antibodies were used to double-stain ir-cells. The percentages of pituitary cells stained for each hormone in intact mares were: total gonadotropes, 15 to 32%; LH-only, 2 to 16%; FSH-only, 1 to …

Use Of Geographic Information System Technology To Assess Vulnerability To Shallow Groundwater Contamination., Brenda G. Bruner Jan 1996

Use Of Geographic Information System Technology To Assess Vulnerability To Shallow Groundwater Contamination., Brenda G. Bruner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was used to develop a local scale screening procedure for assessing shallow ground water's vulnerability to nitrate contamination. The procedure was based on the spatial distribution of ten key physical and chemical properties of soils. Both flow characteristics and attenuation capabilities of soils were incorporated into the assessment. Land surface areas were classified by the GIS to show the level of vulnerability present at a site as a result of existing natural conditions. The procedure produced a Vulnerability Index (VI), and resulted in VI ranging from 4.98 to 6.72 for the study area (with ten …
