Fray Antonio De Montesinos And The Laws Of Burgos,1512-1513, Mirtha Alicia Hernandez
Fray Antonio De Montesinos And The Laws Of Burgos,1512-1513, Mirtha Alicia Hernandez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
On the fourth Sunday of Advent in 1511, in a rustic Cathedral in the city of Santo Domingo on the island of Espanola, a Dominican friar, Antonio de Montesinos, delivered a sermon which, for the first time, publicly denounced the encomienda system, by which the Indians were abused and exploited, Montesinos' exhortation raised two questions: Did the Crown have a right to wage a just war against the Indians because they were infidels? Did the Crown have legal titles to the Indies as a result of Pope Alexander VI's grants? These questions threatened the Crown's sovereignty in the New World …

The Fifth Ward Settlement: A Tri-Racial Marginal Group, Darrell Addison Posey
The Fifth Ward Settlement: A Tri-Racial Marginal Group, Darrell Addison Posey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Fifth Ward Settlement is the name of a community inhabited by "Free jacks" a tri-racial (Negro. White,. Indian) marginal group comprised of at least 2,000 individuals. The etymology of the name "Free- jack" and the development of the Settlement itself go back to the early 1600's. Tracing the development of either is a very complicated and, at best, speculative process.
Due to the racial mixture--especially the Negro element—the Free- jack finds himself in social limbo, somewhere between the White and Black. This middle ground has positioned the people of the Settlement into a "marginal" existence: that is to say, …

Tchefuncte Subsistence Patterns: Morton Shell Mound, Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Kathleen Mary Byrd
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Tchefuncte culture (300 B.C. – A.D. 300), the local manifestation of the Early Woodland Tradition, was originally defined by ceramic types and today is generally viewed in terms of phases based to a large part on varieties of the original pottery types. Although the original report included a faunal list, no detailed study of the subsistence pattern of the Tchefuncte peoples has ever been published.
At the Morton Shell Mound, the excellent preservation in a peat deposit uncovered in one of the excavation units provided an excellent opportunity to study the subsistence aspect of the Tchefuncte people. In the …

The Portrayal Of Women In Selected Short Stories By Eudora Welty. (Volumes I And Ii)., Philip Allen Tapley
The Portrayal Of Women In Selected Short Stories By Eudora Welty. (Volumes I And Ii)., Philip Allen Tapley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although Eudora Welty is a literary artist noted for her feminine approach, she is not a feminist. "In writing fiction," she says, "I think imagination comes ahead of sex." Most of the selections in her short-story volumes portray women characters, however, usually from points of view which focus upon the experiences of women from their particular angles of vision. Her women range from the young girl in "A Visit of Charity" to the aged Phoenix in "A Worn Path." This study examines Miss Welty's portrayal of women, their roles and conflicts, an aspect of her fiction that has received comparatively …
