The most efficient study design to map genes underlying complex traits will be determined by assumptions about whether the genetic effects are likely to be due to relatively few common variants or multiple rare variants. To examine the possibility that rare variants may influence blood pressure, we sequenced a 6.8 kb region of the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene in 29 male Nigerians with high plasma AGT levels and 28 with low levels. The frequency of haplotypes produced from rare variants in the promoter and coding regions was significantly different between the two groups, and it is unlikely that this difference was …

Human forensic casework requires sensitive quantitation of human nuclear (nDNA), mitochondrial (mtDNA), and male Y-chromosome DNA from complex biomaterials. Although many such systems are commercially available, no system is capable of simultaneously quantifying all three targets in a single reaction. Most available methods either are not multiplex compatible or lack human specificity. Here, we report the development of a comprehensive set of human-specific, target-specific multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for DNA quantitation. Using TaqMan-MGB probes, our duplex qPCR for nDNA/mtDNA had a linear quantitation range of 100 ng to 1 pg, and our triplex qPCR assay for nDNA/mtDNA/male Y …

Gamete competition models were used to explore the relationships between 13 ACE gene polymorphisms and plasma ACE concentration in a set of Nigerian families. Several markers in the 5′ and 3′ regions of the gene were significantly associated with ACE concentration (P < 10-4). Multi-locus genotypes comprising different combinations of markers from the 5′ UTR and the 3′ region of the gene were also analysed; in addition to G2350A, in the 3′ region, two markers from the 5′ UTR (A-5466C and A-240T) were found to be associated with ACE concentration. These results are consistent with reports that have suggested the presence of at least two ACE-linked QTLs, and demonstrate the utility of gamete competition models in the exploratory investigation of the relationship between a quantitative trait and multiple variants in a small genomic region. © University College London 2005.

Retrotransposons have had a considerable impact on the overall architecture of the human genome. Currently, there are three lineages of retrotransposons (Alu, L1, and SVA) that are believed to be actively replicating in humans. While estimates of their copy number, sequence diversity, and levels of insertion polymorphism can readily be obtained from existing genomic sequence data and population sampling, a detailed understanding of the temporal pattern of retrotransposon amplification remains elusive. Here we pose the question of whether, using genomic sequence and population frequency data from extant taxa, one can adequately reconstruct historical amplification patterns. To this end, we developed …

Insect Colonization Of Child-Sized Remains And Delay Of Post Mortem Interval: An Exploratory Study In The Behavioral Analysis Of Pig Carcasses Via 24 Hour High Resolution Video Surveillance, Abigail L. Gremillion
LSU Master's Theses
This research was designed to document the decompositional and behavioral patterns and activities of arthropods colonizing child-sized remains, as observed by field sampling and 24-hour, high resolution video surveillance. The purpose of this research was to test the relationship between delays in arthropod colonization of child-sized remains and climatic conditions. Between March and June 2004, the remains of two child-sized pigs (approximately 11 kilograms) were deposited in an isolated wooded region in a suburban area of Virginia. The sites were secluded, approximately 83 yards from any dwellings. The pigs were placed on the surface: one was clothed, the other was …
Secular Change In The Skull Between American Blacks And Whites, Nicole Danielle Truesdell
Secular Change In The Skull Between American Blacks And Whites, Nicole Danielle Truesdell
LSU Master's Theses
Biologically, discernable differences exist between and within populations based on environmental and genetic factors. Understanding these differences is necessary in forensic anthropology as biological ancestry is asked of forensic anthropologists when assessing an individual’s biological profile. In order to make this assessment, secular changes in population dynamics need to be tracked. The purpose of this research is to examine nonmetric racial characteristics in the skull between American blacks and whites. This study used twelve nonmetric traits as criteria on two different temporal groups from collections at the Smithsonian Institution (N=408) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (N=218). Frequencies were calculated, …
Hydroclimatic And Circulation Anomalies Associated With The Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone, Natalie Amanda Vines
Hydroclimatic And Circulation Anomalies Associated With The Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone, Natalie Amanda Vines
LSU Master's Theses
The Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone (GMHZ) has been observed along the Louisiana continental shelf west of the mouth of the Mississippi River since 1985. Previous research associated the surface area of the GMHZ with runoff in the Mississippi-Missouri River Basin (MMRB), with "wet" years linked to larger GMHZs than "dry" years. This research uses monthly climate divisional Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) data and Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI) data and monthly atmospheric teleconnection indices are used to predict the GMHZ extent up to several months in advance, using stepwise multiple regression techniques. The predictive equations are then used …

The Art Of Living - The Marketing Of Identity Through Nationality And Spirituality, Shirisha Shankar
LSU Master's Theses
Spirituality has been a term that has always been associated with the East and more specifically with India. Spirituality has been revamped and repackaged in glossy packages by various spiritual groups and organizations in India. One among these organizations is the Art of Living, a non-governmental spiritual organization that has risen in popularity since 1996. This thesis concentrates on the Art of Living as an organization and of the dissemination of the new spirituality through this institution. This research study pertains to the identity of self and of the sense of nationhood through the discourse and the practice of certain …
Digging Through Discarded Identity: Archaeological Investigations Around The Kitchen And The Overseer's House At Whitney Plantation, Louisiana, Erika Sabine Roberts
Digging Through Discarded Identity: Archaeological Investigations Around The Kitchen And The Overseer's House At Whitney Plantation, Louisiana, Erika Sabine Roberts
LSU Master's Theses
During the mid-nineteenth century, the Haydel family was prominent sugar planters in southern Louisiana. Their plantation, Whitney Plantation (16SJB11), lies on the highway 18 on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Wallace, Louisiana. During the summer of 2002 archaeological investigations were conducted around the kitchen and the overseer’s house, in order to collect a sample of materials associated with these occupants. I hoped that the artifacts could yield information on how the planter and overseer family represented themselves materially. Although what I excavated was the discarded remnants of the Haydel family’s life, these remnants offer an understanding of …
Spatial Heterogeneity In Forested Landscapes: An Examination Of Forest Fragmentation And Suburban Sprawl In The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, Brady Randall Couvillion
Spatial Heterogeneity In Forested Landscapes: An Examination Of Forest Fragmentation And Suburban Sprawl In The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, Brady Randall Couvillion
LSU Master's Theses
Forest fragmentation refers to the spatial distribution of forests in a landscape. Forest fragmentation drastically alters forest composition, habitat quality, genetic flow and many other ecological processes associated with forested ecosystems. This research examined spatial patterns and rates of forest fragmentation during the 1991-2001 period for a region in southeast Louisiana known as the "Florida Parishes." Following classification of 1991 and 2001 Landsat data into forest and non-forest classes, spatial patterns were examined using Fragstats 3.3 spatial analysis software. Spatial statistics such as patch density, perimeter to area ratios, core area indices, edge density, and various landscape continuity indices were …

The Matas "Barn", Robin Plantation (16sl66), St. Landry Parish, Louisiana-History And Archaeology Of A Nineteenth Century Milk House, Sara Anne Hahn
LSU Master's Theses
The Robin Plantation Site (16SL66) is located on the left descending bank of Bayou Teche, near the town of Arnaudville, Louisiana. The site—owned by the Michael and Myra Matas—consists of 14.14 acres of land, a main house, the “barn,” a circa 1945 barn, an overseer’s house and two above-ground cistern bases. The primary goal of this thesis was to determine the age and function of Room 1 of the “barn.” The “barn” in its present form consists of two rooms separated by a breezeway: Room 1 of pièce-sur-pièce construction and Room 2 of post-on-sill construction. As noted, the focus of …
Transforming The Hood: Faith-Based Organizations In New Orleans And Community Development, Jaime Beth Petenko
Transforming The Hood: Faith-Based Organizations In New Orleans And Community Development, Jaime Beth Petenko
LSU Master's Theses
New Orleans is one of the most culturally unique cities in America. However, amidst its rich history and lively traditions, there exists extreme poverty and violence. The objective conditions of New Orleans such as poverty, unemployment, violence, poor healthcare, segregation, inadequate housing, drugs, and racism have created a cycle of despair that many in New Orleans cannot escape. These conditions are not isolated in New Orleans but reproduced and reinforced through the basic structure of American society, governmental and institutional policies, and ideologies. While all poor residents in New Orleans internalize and shape the oppression and marginalization they experience on …
Boston's Settlement Housing: Social Reform In An Industrial City, Meg Streiff
Boston's Settlement Housing: Social Reform In An Industrial City, Meg Streiff
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Between the Civil War and World War I, American cities underwent dramatic changes: they changed in shape, they changed in size, they changed in terms of who was there, and how those individuals were distributed through the city. The driving force behind these urban morphological changes was industrialization – and the emergence of industrial slums on the edges of expanding business districts. These industrial slums were widely believed to breed disease, crime, intemperance, and immorality – external costs that were being born by the entire society. Yet American society and American philanthropic institutions were not prepared to deal with the …
Wealth And Deprivation In The Delta: A Landscape Of Subsidization, Jacqueline Warren Mills
Wealth And Deprivation In The Delta: A Landscape Of Subsidization, Jacqueline Warren Mills
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Mississippi Delta, as defined by the Delta Regional Authority (DRA), is an area of historical and present deprivation. Persistent poverty, lackluster economic development opportunities, and the associated ills of this environment exist alongside large-scale, subsidized agriculture. These federal subsidy payments are criticized for increasing the wealth of corporate enterprises rather than stabilizing the family farmer for whom they were created. This dissertation examines the geography of agristructure, subsidies, and socio-economic characteristics in the Delta with the purpose of identifying spatial relationships among these three variables. Drawing from the Goldschmidt Hypothesis, this research proposes that areas of large-scale agristructure will …
Estimating The Postmortem Interval In Forensic Cases Through The Analysis Of Postmortem Deterioration Of Human Head Hair, Jamie Hughes Collier
Estimating The Postmortem Interval In Forensic Cases Through The Analysis Of Postmortem Deterioration Of Human Head Hair, Jamie Hughes Collier
LSU Master's Theses
Establishing the postmortem interval (PMI) of a decedent is one of the most important responsibilities a forensic investigator may face. An accurate PMI may aid in the identification of not only the victim, but also a suspect. Although many methods for determining time since death have been proposed, there is still a need to establish more reliable dating techniques. This study determines whether head hair from an individual deteriorates uniformly and if so, what association cuticle damage, fungal growth, and changes in proximal end morphology may have with PMI. Fifteen to 25 scalp hairs were pulled from nine cadavers located …

Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the most important names in South American music and probably the most important name in Brazilian music. His musical output includes symphonies, symphonic poems, operas, chamber music, concertos, and choral music, among other genres. His choral music output is significant and includes pieces in which the chorus seems to be used for color and rhythm in a primarily instrumental texture, educational music, folk and secular pieces, large scale choral pieces, and sacred music. This document provides a brief survey of his choral music and a conductor's study of his last two choral works, Bendita Sabedoria …
Using Brownfield Redevelopment To Mitigate Technological Hazards In Shreveport, Louisiana, David Farritor
Using Brownfield Redevelopment To Mitigate Technological Hazards In Shreveport, Louisiana, David Farritor
LSU Master's Theses
Brownfields are "abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination" (USEPA 2003a). This thesis focuses on the practices of public and private institutions to redevelop brownfields in Shreveport, Louisiana, as a means of mitigating potential technological hazards. The theoretical concept framing this analysis is hazards-of-place, a model of vulnerability that proposes interactions among physical vulnerability, social vulnerability, and mitigation efforts. In this model, vulnerability is a process that involves not only the likelihood of a hazardous incident but also the processes of hazard creation and mitigation that occur …
Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound, Cameron Hideo Bourg
Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound, Cameron Hideo Bourg
LSU Master's Theses
The subject of Maya music is by no means a new field of study for Hispanic cultural scholars or Mesoamerican anthropologists. For example, the archeological reports of Dr. Norman Hammond and Dr. Paul Healy have greatly increased the information in this area of study. The instrumentation utilized by ancient Maya musicians and the raw materials that were the essence of their production have been the major themes in these previous publications. However, these perspectives exclude the sound of music and aspects of ancient Maya society. This thesis has been planned to examine ancient Maya music according to archaeology, society and …

The purpose of this project was to identify group differences in physical function and HRQL between older adults living in different environments, and to compare information from these groups to data from a random sample of elders pulled from the general population. METHODS: Seventy-eight older adults were evaluated for physical function using the continuous-scale physical functional performance test (CS-PFP) and HRQL using the SF-36 v.2. Subjects were 26 predominantly African American participants (LOW group; age 72.2 ± 8.1 years), 26 Caucasian adults (HIGH group; age 77.6 ± 4.8 years), and 26 adults selected from a population-based study (POP group; age …
Vernacular Exposures At The Aillet House: Anthropological Interpretations Of Material Culture And Cultural Change, Kelli Ostrom
Vernacular Exposures At The Aillet House: Anthropological Interpretations Of Material Culture And Cultural Change, Kelli Ostrom
LSU Master's Theses
The thesis project developed from preliminary archaeological testing in 1999 at site 16WBR45, the original location of the Aillet House. The results of the testing were informative as they suggested the placement of the house and attested to casual activity on the porch. However, the results certainly did not answer the need for a more discerning interpretation of the historic house museum known as the Aillet House, currently on display at the West Baton Rouge Parish Museum. I collaborated with the museum in 2004 to bring to their current interpretive program anthropological insights gained from archaeological remains, an architectural survey …
Complexifying The Poetic: Toward A Poiesis Of Curriculum, Donna Lynn Trueit
Complexifying The Poetic: Toward A Poiesis Of Curriculum, Donna Lynn Trueit
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Inspired by philosopher Richard Rorty’s assertion that we need poetic imagination to move beyond modernity, this pragmatist inquiry seeks to understand the poetic, not as it is rationally defined, but rather as a historically situated discursive practice. In western cultures modernist discursive practices are characterized by rationalist reasoning. Traced to Aristotelian re- interpretations of mimesis (this is that), which structure modernist forms of representation, mimesis operates on a principle of equivalency between the specific and the universal, based on Euclidean, geometric reasoning. Likewise, mimesis underlies poetic representation as an imaginative expression of an objective reality, ideally, a form that moves …
