Performing Folk Punk : Agonistic Performances Of Intersectionality, Benjamin D. Haas Jan 2013

Performing Folk Punk : Agonistic Performances Of Intersectionality, Benjamin D. Haas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The overarching goal of this project is to argue that folk punk performances offer spaces where a listening audience is exposed to a radical and intersectional politics, and enable that audience to identify with those views. By considering the performances of Inky Skulls, Pussy Riot!, and Against Me!, this study looks to the ways in which these folk punk exemplars highlight elements of the radical politics of the American left and in the history of folk and punk music. In particular, this project considers the intersections of race and class, women and nonhuman animals, and queerness and anarchism, as intersecting …

The Laws Of Verse : The Poetry Of Alice Meynell And Its Literary Contexts, 1875-1923, Jared Hromadka Jan 2013

The Laws Of Verse : The Poetry Of Alice Meynell And Its Literary Contexts, 1875-1923, Jared Hromadka

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Like other poets who came to prominence in the nineteenth century but continued to publish well into the twentieth, Alice Meynell’s work has come gradually to be occluded by the work of her younger contemporaries, among them T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. The available scholarship records this process of occlusion in the form of an almost complete absence of serious discourse on Meynell’s work following her death in 1922 until the beginnings of a modest revival of interest in her writing beginning in the 1980s. This study aims to address that gap by giving a more complete account of …

Integrated Functional Anlaysis Of Quorum-Sensing In The Rice Pathogenic Bacterium Burkholderia Glumae, Ruoxi Chen Jan 2013

Integrated Functional Anlaysis Of Quorum-Sensing In The Rice Pathogenic Bacterium Burkholderia Glumae, Ruoxi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication mechanism that allows bacterial cells to collectively behave like a multicellular organism. It regulates the expression of toxoflavin, one of the major virulence factors of the rice pathogen, Burkholderia glumae. The QS system of B. glumae is mediated by the core genes, tofI and tofR. N-octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone, the primary QS signal molecule of B. glumae, is synthesized by tofI and binds to the cognate receptor tofR at the quorum point. However, tofI and tofR null mutants produce toxoflavin in certain growth conditions, indicating the presence of tofI- and tofR-independent pathways for toxoflavin production. …

Single-Crystal Metal Oxides And Supported Metal Nanoclusters As Model Catalyst Sytems, Matthew C. Patterson Jan 2013

Single-Crystal Metal Oxides And Supported Metal Nanoclusters As Model Catalyst Sytems, Matthew C. Patterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We have investigated the morphology and electronic structure of two basic classes of systems: metal oxide surfaces that catalyze the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from aromatic precursors, and Au and Cu nanoparticles that may be suitable catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of CO or hydrogenation of CO2. First, we examine the adsorption behavior of phenol on rutile TiO2(110) and ultrathin films of alumina prepared on a NiAl(110) substrate. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies show that exposure of both γ-alumina and titania powder to phenol at 250°C results in the formation of persistent phenoxyl radicals. EELS studies of phenol …

Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman Jan 2013

Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A long-standing goal of Artificial Intelligence is to program computers that understand natural language. A basic obstacle is that computers lack the common sense that even small children acquire simply by experiencing life, and no one has devised a way to program this experience into a computer. This dissertation presents a methodology and proof-of-concept software system that enables non-experts, with some training, to create simple experiences. For the purposes of this dissertation, an experience is a series of time-ordered comic frames, annotated with the changing intentional and physical states of the characters and objects in each frame. Each frame represents …

Examining Neotropical Primate Community Structure At Regional And Local Scales : Insights From Taxonomic And Phylogenetic Approaches, Maria Mercedes Gavilanez Jan 2013

Examining Neotropical Primate Community Structure At Regional And Local Scales : Insights From Taxonomic And Phylogenetic Approaches, Maria Mercedes Gavilanez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding mechanisms underlying distribution of biodiversity remains a central issue in ecology. I integrate ecological and phylogenetic information at multiple spatial scales to better understand neotropical primate distribution and community structure. I investigate the variation within species ranges in relation to species richness and patterns of species relatedness. Results suggest positive associations among species throughout their distributions, whereby species tend to present higher richness within their ranges than average richness for the entire taxon. However, comparing empirical distributions to a null model of range cohesion suggests mechanisms other than dispersal are setting a limit to the number of species capable …

Tensions Between Abstraction And Replication In Early-Twentieth-Century Design : Norman Bel Geddes' Designs For Broadway's The Miracle, John Thomas-Hood Mabry Jan 2013

Tensions Between Abstraction And Replication In Early-Twentieth-Century Design : Norman Bel Geddes' Designs For Broadway's The Miracle, John Thomas-Hood Mabry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I make a major contribution to American scenographic historiography with this revised account of Norman Bel Geddes’ set for Max Reinhardt’s 1924 Broadway production of The Miracle, a design theatre scholars have consistently used not only to define Geddes’ aesthetic “versatility,” but also as a prime exemplar of New Stagecraft style. Based on both secondary and primary research material, I contend that the cathedral setting was neither indicative of Geddes’ fundamental aesthetic principles, nor of the aesthetic principles of the New Stagecraft. I firmly establish the principles of the latter within the first definitive, concise demarcation of what constitutes New …

Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence Jan 2013

Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The three studies in this dissertation were posed with the common goal of revealing possible explanations for variations in the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence across regional cultures of the United States. Study 1 posed and tested two hypotheses related to the distribution of male-perpetrated intimate partner homicide across regions of the United States. The South and West, two regions characterized in full (the South) or in part (the West) by honor cultures, emerged as the regions with the highest rates of argument- and conflict- related, male-on-female intimate partner homicides in single victim/single offender incidents. Explanations provided at the …

Role Of Nod2/Rip2 Signaling In Acute Bacterial Pneumonia And Sepsis, Balamayooran Theivanthiran Jan 2013

Role Of Nod2/Rip2 Signaling In Acute Bacterial Pneumonia And Sepsis, Balamayooran Theivanthiran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacterial pneumonia and sepsis are two important causes of mortality in the world. Emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria has necessitated the development of new treatment and/or prevention strategies to augment host immune defense. In this context, the innate host defense is critical in clearing pathogenic bacteria from the host. Early neutrophil recruitment is a critical step in a multistep requence leading to bacterial clearance. Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) play a critical role in the innate immune system. Receptor interacting protein 2 (RIP-2) is an adaptor for the nod-like receptors (NLR) NOD1 and NOD2. Nucleotide oligomerisation domain 2 (NOD2) is an …

Diversity And Activity Of Aerobic Thermophilic Carbon Monoxide-Oxidizing Bacteria On Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, Caitlin Elizabeth King Jan 2013

Diversity And Activity Of Aerobic Thermophilic Carbon Monoxide-Oxidizing Bacteria On Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, Caitlin Elizabeth King

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Aerobic carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation is used by phylogenetically and physiologically diverse microorganisms inhabiting a variety of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Activity assays, culture-based studies, and molecular-based approaches targeting the coxL gene, encoding the large subunit of CO dehydrogenase, were used to investigate the role of temperature in structuring CO-oxidizing communities at Kilauea Volcano, Hawai’i. CO uptake activity was assessed for unvegetated and vegetated temperate volcanic deposits that experience different temperature regimes due to plant development during ecosystem succession. Both CO-oxidizing communities had similar short-term responses to temperature; however, results from extended incubations (30 d) at elevated temperature (55 °C) …

Environmental Kuznets Curve In Water Pollution: A Semiparametric Approach, Mahesh Pandit Jan 2013

Environmental Kuznets Curve In Water Pollution: A Semiparametric Approach, Mahesh Pandit

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The relationship between pollution and per capita income generally appears as an inverted U-shaped curve. This inverted U-shaped curve is known as the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). The shape of the curve, however, is very sensitive to the data, location and pollutant considered in the analysis. Since the early 1990s, there has been an exponential growth in the number of empirical studies in this field, but many refute the inverted U-shaped nature of the curve for pollutants across different time periods and geographical regions. This has generated an increased interest in developing a more flexible functional form for model specification …

The Roles Of Deinococcus Radiodurans Dps-1 And Dps-2 In Nucleoid Organization And In Survival During Oxidative Stress, Khoa Huynh Nguyen Jan 2013

The Roles Of Deinococcus Radiodurans Dps-1 And Dps-2 In Nucleoid Organization And In Survival During Oxidative Stress, Khoa Huynh Nguyen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

DNA protection during starvation (Dps) proteins are important for bacterial oxidative stress responses. This study aims to understand the roles and characteristics of the two Dps homologs in Deinococcus radiodurans: Dps-1 and Dps-2. Dps-2 contains a predicted signal peptide and in vivo localization of Dps-2 reveals that its location is non-cytoplasmic. β-galactosidase assays show that the Dps-2 promoter is upregulated in the presence of H2O2 and the results from the DNA protection assay show that Dps-2 is able to protect DNA efficiently against reactive oxygen species (ROS). Dps-2 has a C-terminal extension that is needed for assembly into a dodecamer …

Complex Formation And Regulation Of Escherichia Coli Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Tyler Craig Broussard Jan 2013

Complex Formation And Regulation Of Escherichia Coli Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Tyler Craig Broussard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is a biotin-dependent, multifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis. The Escherichia coli enzyme is composed of a homodimeric biotin carboxylase, biotinylated biotin carboxyl carrier protein (BCCP), and an α2β2 heterotetrameric carboxyltransferase. Catalysis by acetyl-CoA carboxylase proceeds via two half-reactions. In the first half-reaction, biotin carboxylase catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of biotin, which is covalently attached to BCCP, to form carboxybiotin. In the second half-reaction, carboxyltransferase transfers the carboxyl group from carboxybiotin to acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA. All biotin-dependent carboxylases are proposed to have a two-site ping-pong mechanism where the …

The Shoulder Suspension Of Bipedal Humans And The Head Suspension Of Quadrupedal Cats : A Reconstruction Of Macroevolutionary Changes Of Complex Systems Based On Nautral Experiments, Comparative Anatomy, And Biomechanical Analyses Of Extant Organisms, Michelle L. Osborn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The biological processes in macroevolutionary transformations, which result in the origin of new species and supraspecific taxa, are not directly observable in organisms with long reproductive generations and need to be extrapolated and reconstructed from physiological, anatomical, and microevolutionary processes. This dissertation reconstructs the anatomical and biomechanical changes that affected the head-neck-shoulder apparatus during the macroevolutionary transformation of a quadrupedal mammal to a bipedal one by studying two model organisms, namely the human and the cat. I hypothesize that the anatomical differences in the head-neck-shoulder apparatus of the two organisms are caused by different force regimes that act on them. …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research builds upon the work of Entman & Rojecki (2001) in examining the ways the most influential movies use racial stereotypes in media frames. The results of this study contribute to the rather limited mass media research and body of knowledge regarding the media content that attracts the largest and most enduring audiences in the new media landscape. As ten of the films that have generated the most revenue, the movies in this sample constitute a genre of movies that are also a prime feature of on-going publishing, cable, internet, digital gaming, DVD, and movie sequel franchises. If, as …

A Multi-Scale Investigation Of Nutrient Dynamics In The Lake Pontchartrain Estuary And Basin, Eric Daniel Roy Jan 2013

A Multi-Scale Investigation Of Nutrient Dynamics In The Lake Pontchartrain Estuary And Basin, Eric Daniel Roy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Humans are responsible for global-scale alteration of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) biogeochemical cycles to support food production. Increases in N and P inputs into soils and waste-streams has resulted in excessive nutrient loading to surface waters, including the Mississippi River, leading to eutrophication. Here I investigated N and P dynamics occurring in the Lake Pontchartrain Estuary and Basin. I measured two biogeochemical processes using intact sediment core incubations and quantified their importance in the context of nutrient-rich Mississippi River flood diversions through the Bonnet Carré Spillway. I show that diffusion of nitrate-N into sediments accounts for a substantial magnitude …

Polyamines are a diverse class of aliphatic molecules that are highly polycationic at physiological intracellular pH. Polyamine levels are regulated by the coordinated actions of arginase (Arg), ornithine decarboxylase (Odc), and polyamine oxidase (Pao). Although little is known of their functions in fish, polyamines have been implicated in diverse physiological processes, including RNA transcription, cell growth, cell proliferation, and cell apoptosis. The main objective of this study was to describe the transcription and enzymatic activities of key enzymes for polyamine metabolism, to measure polyamine levels, and to assess putative roles of polyamines in the gills of the Gulf killifish (Fundulus …

In Spite Of Yourself : The Asignifying Force Of Humor And Laughter, Kevin Michael Casper Jan 2013

In Spite Of Yourself : The Asignifying Force Of Humor And Laughter, Kevin Michael Casper

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In Spite of Yourself: The Asignifying Force of Humor and Laughter calls upon the interruptive moments of uncontrollable laughter to challenge rhetoric’s historical treatment of humor and laughter. Anyone who has ever suffered a fit of hysterical laughter at precisely the wrong moment, or has begun to laugh spontaneously at an inappropriate joke before stopping short, can attest to laughter’s uniquely uncontrollable force. Beyond all reason and control, laughter interrupts us and reminds us of the limits of the human subject. Because laughter does not signify meaning in the traditional communicative sense, it exerts an asignifying force irreducible to the …

Straight University emerged as an integrated higher education institution in New Orleans in 1870 and promoted education and training for young men and women, irrespective of race, gender, or ethnicity. Named after its generous patron, Seymour Straight, the university emerged as a space for community and egalitarianism at a time when the assertion of emancipation and civil rights redefined how people lived together in reconstructing a “New South.” Education represented an archetype to shape the future direction of Southern society in a meaningful and tangible way, and Straight University represented this ideal at its founding. The university also became a …

Effects Of Different Weaning Management Strategies On Preconditioning Performance, Haptoglobin Serum Levels, Feedlot Morbidity, And Carcass Characteristics, Jake Everitt Anderson Jan 2013

Effects Of Different Weaning Management Strategies On Preconditioning Performance, Haptoglobin Serum Levels, Feedlot Morbidity, And Carcass Characteristics, Jake Everitt Anderson

LSU Master's Theses

Weaning, one of the first major stressors encountered by the calf, has a negative effect on the immune system and increases the likelihood of infection of novel pathogens such as those that cause bovine respiratory disease. Fenceline contact at weaning has been shown to reduce the stress on the calf during the time following maternal separation. Preconditioning programs have been shown to reduce feedlot morbidity and mortality. Combining these two management practices could reduce the length of time calves need to be held in a preconditioning program. A multi-year study was conducted to evaluate if fenceline weaning will allow for …
