We have examined the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from phenol over alumina and titania using both powder and single-crystal samples. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of phenol adsorbed on metal oxide powders indicates radical formation on both titania and alumina, with both oxides forming one faster-decaying species (lifetime on the order of 50-100 h) and one slower-decaying species (lifetimes on the order of 1000 h or more). Electron energy loss spec- troscopy (EELS) measurements comparing physisorbed phenol on single-crystal TiO2(1 1 0) to phenoxyl radicals on the same substrate indicate distinct changes in the π-π* transitions from …

Impact Of Obesity On Il-12 Family Gene Expression In Insulin Responsive Tissues, Heesun Nam, Bradley S. Ferguson, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Ron F. Morrison Jan 2013

Impact Of Obesity On Il-12 Family Gene Expression In Insulin Responsive Tissues, Heesun Nam, Bradley S. Ferguson, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Ron F. Morrison

Faculty Publications

Mounting evidence has established a role for chronic inflammation in the development of obesity-induced insulin resistance, as genetic ablation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines elevated in obesity improves insulin signaling in vitro and in vivo. Recent evidence further highlights interleukin (IL)-12 family cytokines as prospective inflammatory mediators linking obesity to insulin resistance. In this study, we present empirical evidence demonstrating that IL-12 family related genes are expressed and regulated in insulin-responsive tissues under conditions of obesity. First, we report that respective mRNAs for each of the known members of this cytokine family are expressed within detectable ranges in WAT, skeletal …

Two zinc(II) phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) were conjugated with a monoclonal antibody (MAb) directed against carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), using an in situ activated carboxylic acid on the ZnPcs. The bioconjugate with the highest ZnPc/MAb ratio of 3 was investigated in vitro for its ability to target and fluorescently label human colorectal HT-29 cells. The ZnPc-CEA MAb 2 was observed to efficiently target HT-29 cells, about 37 times more than unconjugated ZnPc. Furthermore, in the presence of a 4-fold excess of unlabelled anti-CEA antibody, the fluorescence signal of 2 was reduced by ∼90% showing that the targeting is CEA-mediated. These studies further confirm …

Requirement Of Vesicle-Associated Membrane Protein 721 And 722 For Sustained Growth During Immune Responses In Arabidopsis., Hye Sup Yun, Mark Kwaaitaal, Naohiro Kato, Changhyun Yi, Sohyeon Park, Masa H. Sato, Paul Schulze-Lefert, Chian Kwon

Faculty Publications

Extracellular immune responses to ascomycete and oomycete pathogens in Arabidopsis are dependent on vesicle-associated secretion mediated by the SNARE proteins PEN1 syntaxin, SNAP33 and endomembrane-resident VAMP721/722. Continuous movement of functional GFP-VAMP722 to and from the plasma membrane in non-stimulated cells reflects the second proposed function of VAMP721/722 in constitutive secretion during plant growth and development. Application of the bacterium-derived elicitor flg22 stabilizes VAMP721/722 that are otherwise constitutively degraded via the 26S proteasome pathway. Depletion of VAMP721/722 levels by reducing VAMP721/722 gene dosage enhances flg22-induced seedling growth inhibition in spite of elevated VAMP721/722 abundance. We therefore propose that plants prioritize the …

Fuel Composition Influences Fire Characteristics And Understorey Hardwoods In Pine Savanna, Darin P. Ellair, William J. Platt Jan 2013

Fuel Composition Influences Fire Characteristics And Understorey Hardwoods In Pine Savanna, Darin P. Ellair, William J. Platt

Faculty Publications

Fuels in the groundcover of frequently burned south-eastern pine savannas include shed leaves of trees. Flammable needles of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) potentially increase maximum fire temperatures and durations of heating, negatively affecting other trees within the groundcover. Less flammable leaves that accumulate around the bases of understorey stems of hardwood trees such as mockernut hickories (Carya alba) in the fall potentially depress maximum fire temperatures and durations of heating, enhancing post-fire recovery. We experimentally manipulated amounts of pine and hickory leaves beneath understorey hickory stems in a pine savanna, measured temperatures during prescribed fires and assessed combustion of fuels …

Race In Biological And Biomedical Research, Richard S. Cooper Jan 2013

Race In Biological And Biomedical Research, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

The concept of race has had a significant influence on research in human biology since the early 19th century. But race was given its meaning and social impact in the political sphere and subsequently intervened in science as a foreign concept, not grounded in the dominant empiricism of modern biology. The uses of race in sciencewere therefore often disruptive and controversial; at times, science had to be retrofitted to accommodate race, and science in turn was often used to explain and justify race. This relationship was unstable in large part because race was about a phenomenon that could not be …

Breeding Seasonality In Central Amazonian Rainforest Birds, Philip C. Stouffer, Erik I. Johnson, Richard O. Bierregaard Jan 2013

Breeding Seasonality In Central Amazonian Rainforest Birds, Philip C. Stouffer, Erik I. Johnson, Richard O. Bierregaard

Faculty Publications

Although it has long been recognized that many tropical birds do not share the same narrow breeding periods as temperate birds, conventional thinking considers tropical breeding seasons to be discrete periods generally governed by rainfall seasonality. We used a database of >31,000 captures of 104 species collected over 17 years in rainforest near Manaus, Brazil (2.5°S), to examine timing of breeding. The proportion of individuals with active incubation patches peaked at 7% in the dry season, from October through December. The peak was about twice as high as the lowest rate, in the late wet season (April-June). From 9 to …

Recovery Of Understory Bird Movement Across The Interface Of Primary And Secondary Amazon Rainforest, Luke L. Powell, Philip C. Stouffer, Erik I. Johnson Jan 2013

Recovery Of Understory Bird Movement Across The Interface Of Primary And Secondary Amazon Rainforest, Luke L. Powell, Philip C. Stouffer, Erik I. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Amazonia now contains vast areas of secondary forest because of widespread regeneration following timber harvests, yet the value of secondary forest to wildlife remains poorly understood. Secondary forest becomes structurally similar to primary forest after abandonment, and therefore we predicted that avian movement across the interface of primary and secondary forest (hereafter "the interface") would gradually increase with time since abandonment until recovery to pre-isolation levels. From 1992 to 2011, we captured 2,773 understory birds of 10 foraging guilds along the interface of primary forest fragments and zero- to 30-year-old secondary forest at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project …

Faculty Publications

Background:Cellular glucose uptake can be enhanced by upregulating Ras signaling in either insulin-dependent or -independent manner. In presence of insulin and intact insulin signaling, Ras has a negligible role in glucose uptake. Conversely, when insulin signaling is impaired in obesity or diabetes, the insulin-independent Ras pathway may be valuable for enhancing glucose disposal. We previously reported that Ad36, a human adenovirus, enhances cellular glucose uptake by upregulating the Ras/Glut4 pathway. Here, we investigated if Ad36-upregulated Ras via the insulin-independent pathway, to enhance glucose uptake. Furthermore, uncontrolled upregulation of Ras is linked with oncogenic cell transformation, if the tumor-suppressor gene p53 …

Preharvest Foliar Applications Of Ethephon Increase Skin Lignin/ Suberin Content And Resistance To Skinning In Sweetpotato Storage Roots, Xiang Wang, Ramón A. Arancibia, Jeffrey L. Main, Mark W. Shankle, Don R. Labonte

Faculty Publications

Skinning or surface abrasion in sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] roots during harvest causes a substantial loss of marketable products in storage as a result of rots, loss of moisture, and simply unattractive marketable appearance. In 2008, 2010, and 2011, changes in skinning incidence/severity and skin lignin/suberin content in response to preharvest foliar applications of ethephon or defoliation/devining were investigated. Field-grown 'Beauregard' (B-14) sweetpotato plots were treated with ethephon at 0.84, 1.68, and 2.52 kg·ha-1 (based on the recommendations for tobacco) applied at 1, 3, and 7 days before harvest (DBH). Defoliated/devined treatments were applied at 0, 1, 3, and …

Faculty Publications

Two high-molecular-mass dsRNAs of approximately 14 and 15 kbp were isolated from the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivar Black Turtle Soup. These dsRNAs did not appear to cause obvious disease symptoms, and were transmitted through seeds at nearly 100% efficiency. Sequence information indicates that they are the genomes of distinct endornavirus species, for which the names Phaseolus vulgaris endornavirus 1 (PvEV-1) and Phaseolus vulgaris endornavirus 2 (PvEV-2) are proposed. The PvEV-1 genome consists of 13 908 bp and potentially encodes a single polyprotein of 4496 aa, while that of PvEV-2 consists of 14 820 bp and potentially encodes a single …

Ethanol Production Potential Of Sweet Sorghum Assessed Using Forage Fiber Analysis Procedures, Kun Jun Han, William D. Pitman, Misook Kim, Donal F. Day, Montgomery W. Alison, Michael E. Mccormick, Giovanna Aita

Faculty Publications

Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is widely recognized as a highly promising biomass energy crop with particular potential to complement sugarcane production in diversified cropping systems. Agronomic assessments have led to identification of four cultivars well suited for such sugarcane-based production systems in southern Louisiana. Sweet sorghum biofuel production systems are currently being developed, and research producing large sample numbers requiring ethanol yield assessment is anticipated. Fiber analysis approaches developed for forage evaluation appear to be useful for screening such large numbers of samples for relative ethanol yield. Chemical composition, forage fiber characteristics, digestibility, and ethanol production of sweet …

An Analysis Of The Prevalence Of The West Nile Virus In Relation To Health Resilience Along The Gulf Of Mexico, Lillian Patricia Mata Jan 2013

An Analysis Of The Prevalence Of The West Nile Virus In Relation To Health Resilience Along The Gulf Of Mexico, Lillian Patricia Mata

LSU Master's Theses

As the Earth’s climate changes, coastal communities are increasingly vulnerable to the natural hazards that are driven by these processes, particularly in regards to the health of these communities. It has been shown that disease patterns can change in response to our environment, putting the health resilience of communities at risk. This study looks at the relationship between natural exposure and traditional resilience index variables in the context of the spread of West Nile Virus along the Gulf of Mexico. Through analysis of 534 counties, the West Nile Virus for 2001-2012 was analyzed as an incidence and incidence rate at …

Response Of Bovine Fetal Fibroblasts To Pluripotency Induction With In Vitro Transcribed Mrna, Tricia Adams Jan 2013

Response Of Bovine Fetal Fibroblasts To Pluripotency Induction With In Vitro Transcribed Mrna, Tricia Adams

LSU Master's Theses

Numerous studies have contributed to the induction of pluripotency in an abundance of cell types; however, transfection techniques and efficiency have yielded undesirable outcomes. Traditionally, the use of viral vectors as a mode of transmission has proven to be efficient in the induction of pluripotency transcription factors in mammalian cells. The increasing concern is random insertion of viral components within the host genome due to the viral mode of replication. The delivery of messenger RNA by cationic lipid delivery vehicles circumvents the viral concerns and provides an efficient and safe mode of reprogramming. Synthetic mRNA can be used to initiate …

The Use Of Duddingtonia Flagrans For Gastrointestinal Parasitic Nematode Control In Feces Of Exotic Artiodactylids At Disney's Animal Kingdom®, Jenna Terry Jan 2013

The Use Of Duddingtonia Flagrans For Gastrointestinal Parasitic Nematode Control In Feces Of Exotic Artiodactylids At Disney's Animal Kingdom®, Jenna Terry

LSU Master's Theses

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are parasites of major concern for domestic and exotic ruminant species around the world. In the past, zoological facilities used anthelmintics as their primary control method. Challenges in accurate dosing and administration of anthelmintics to exotic hoofstock contributed to the development of resistant nematode populations in zoological settings. The historic dependency on anthelmintics to control GIN populations is no longer an option. Biological alternatives are urgently needed, in both exotic and domestic ruminants, in the war against resistance. One such alternative is the use of the nematophagous fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans. Three independent studies were conducted: A nine …
