Four Corners: Concerto For Marimba And Orchestra And Carl Nielsen: An Analysis Of His Late Symphonies: (Symphony 4-6), Timothy James Beattie
Four Corners: Concerto For Marimba And Orchestra And Carl Nielsen: An Analysis Of His Late Symphonies: (Symphony 4-6), Timothy James Beattie
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The first part of this dissertation is a musical composition for orchestra entitled Four Corners: Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra in 4 Movements. This work is a tone poem, featuring marimba and orchestra that depicts American locales as presented by notable American authors. I employed a neo-tonal compositional approach to portray these musical scenes. The work attempts to evoke both the physical features of each place, as well as the author’s experience and mindset with each place. The movements appear in this order: Maine Woods (Henry David Thoreau’s Retreat), Key West (Hemingway’s Home), Big Sur (John Steinbeck’s Backdrop), Mount Desolation …
Ant Diversity And Community Structure In Coastal Dunes And Wetlands, Xuan Chen
Ant Diversity And Community Structure In Coastal Dunes And Wetlands, Xuan Chen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
How do many species live in a certain place? How does species composition changes among habitats? And what mechanisms decide species distribution? These are fundamental questions in community ecology. I first investigated ant diversity in two coastal ecosystems (dunes and wetlands) in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and then used the distribution patterns to infer assembly processes that structure ant communities in coastal areas. Specifically, the following hypotheses are tested: (1) coastal systems support lower ant diversity due to the unsuitable environment; (2) species living near the seashore are a subset of those exist near inland; (3) deterministic processes are …
Amblyomma Maculatum Immunomodulation In Mammalian Models Of Rickettsia Parkeri Rickettsiosis, Kaikhushroo Hormazd Banajee
Amblyomma Maculatum Immunomodulation In Mammalian Models Of Rickettsia Parkeri Rickettsiosis, Kaikhushroo Hormazd Banajee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rickettsia parkeri is an emerging human pathogen and spotted fever group Rickettsia that is transmitted via Amblyomma maculatum (the Gulf Coast tick) in the United States. Since these ticks must feed for several days in order to molt to the next life cycle, they must be able to counteract the host immune response. Despite this fact, there have been few studies that evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of this vector and the resultant influence on rickettsial disease. The hypothesis of this research is that, if A. maculatum feeding modifies the host immune response, this immunomodulation will enhance disease caused by R. …
Mexican Rice Borer (Eoreuma Loftini) Pheromone Trap Efficacy And Role In Invasive Species Monitoring And Pest Management, Blake Emerson Wilson
Mexican Rice Borer (Eoreuma Loftini) Pheromone Trap Efficacy And Role In Invasive Species Monitoring And Pest Management, Blake Emerson Wilson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is an invasive pest of sugarcane, Saccharum spp.; rice, Oryza sativa; and other graminaceous crops along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Identification of E. loftini sex pheromones led to the development of pheromone baited traps. Studies were conducted to determine strategies for the use of E. loftini pheromone traps in invasive species monitoring and pest management. A two-year field study demonstrated that E. loftini pheromone traps attract males from distances of up to 100m. A behavioral assay observed that detection of the pheromone by E. loftini males occurs at ≈48m from the …

A Swann's Song In Middle-Earth: An Exploration Of Donald Swann's "The Road Goes Ever On" And The Development Of A System Of Lyric Diction For Tolkien's Constructed, Elvish Languages, Richard Garrett Leonberger
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Donald Swann is best known for his long-time collaboration with lyricist and singer Michael Flanders, with whom he served as composer, pianist and fellow singer. He composed many other serious works beyond the Flanders and Swann collaboration, including song cycles, operas, masses and other choral repertoire. This study explores one example of Swann’s classical repertory: "The Road Goes Ever On: A Song Cycle," a collection of nine musical settings of texts by J. R. R. Tolkien, author of "The Lord of the Rings." Beginning with biographical and stylistic synopses of both the composer and the poet, subsequent chapters include: an …
This Is Only Temporary, Melanie Robyn Wall
This Is Only Temporary, Melanie Robyn Wall
LSU Master's Theses
This is only Temporary examines my personal history of homes as reimagined spaces. The series of prints in the exhibition depicts reconstructed memories of houses. These visual narratives give context to the installation constructed from handmade paper and raw materials. The framework is reminiscent of housing plans that converge into a labyrinth. Participants actively engage the space, navigating the confined structure. A playful nature runs throughout the prints and installation reflecting upon reinterpreted memories within transitional spaces.
Perceived Barriers To Autism Spectrum Disorder Services, Lindsey Willis Williams
Perceived Barriers To Autism Spectrum Disorder Services, Lindsey Willis Williams
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder with hallmark symptoms that can be severely impairing to both the individual and the overall family dynamic. The path to diagnostic and therapy services is often lengthy and complex. Despite various state and federal efforts to improve service access, disparities remain evident across ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic lines with caregivers reporting financial, cultural, geographic, and practical (e.g., transportation, scheduling) barriers. For those able to access treatment, several interventions have been proven efficacious in addressing ASD symptoms, problem behaviors, and adaptive skills deficits. Other often-used interventions include those without established merit for …

The Role Of Burkholderia Thailandensis-Encoded Marr Homologs In Response To Host-Derived Signals, Ashish Gupta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Multiple antibiotic resistance regulator (MarR) family is the most ubiquitous category of transcriptional regulators that exists among different bacteria and archaea. MarR family transcriptional regulators have been studied for their involvement in various biological processes, such as environmental chemical response, pathogenicity, and environmental stress responses. This work elucidates the role of MarR homologs MftR (major facilitator transcriptional regulator) and BifR (biofilm regulator) in the soil bacterium Burkholderia thailandensis. Burkholderia thailandensis-encoded MarR homolog MftR is divergently oriented to a gene that encodes the efflux pump MftP (major facilitator transport protein). MftR binds two cognate sites (each site consist of 9 bp …
Participation In Active And Passive Music Interventions By Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease And Related Dementias: Effects On Agitation, Robert J. Prattini
Participation In Active And Passive Music Interventions By Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease And Related Dementias: Effects On Agitation, Robert J. Prattini
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The ability of music to produce calming effects on us is well documented, and its use is becoming an increasingly accepted intervention with populations displaying agitated and disruptive behaviors, such as people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or other dementias. One reason for its widespread use is because research has demonstrated music’s efficacy in reducing agitation, and consequently disruptive behaviors, in those with AD. Prior studies on music’s effects on agitation in older people with AD have utilized either recorded music used passively, or active sessions with a music therapist or musicians, but none have compared the effects of each type …
Combining Forage And Cover Crop Benefits From Cool-Season Annuals In The Southeastern United States, Dustin John Smith
Combining Forage And Cover Crop Benefits From Cool-Season Annuals In The Southeastern United States, Dustin John Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Cow-calf operations in the southeastern United States (U.S.) are based on warm-season perennial grass pastures. Stored forage feeding during the non-grazing season constitutes more than half of a cattle operation’s annual expenses. Cool-season annuals can extend the grazing season, thereby reducing stored forage feeding. A two-year field trial was conducted to determine the forage potential of a variety of crops commonly used as winter cover crops in the southeastern U.S. The ten cover crop treatments included seven monocultures (annual ryegrass [Lolium multiflorum], rye [Secale cereal], oats [Avena sativa], triticale [Triticale hexaploide], tillage radish [Raphanus sativus], hairy vetch [Vicia villosa], crimson …
Human Norovirus In Artificial And Environmental Marine Water: Development Of Antibody Based Rapid Methods, Morgan Maite
Human Norovirus In Artificial And Environmental Marine Water: Development Of Antibody Based Rapid Methods, Morgan Maite
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Norovirus (NoV) is the principal cause of viral gastroenteritis in the United States. It has been linked to filter-feeding molluscan shellfish, that bioaccumulate the virus from contaminated surrounding waters. The consumption of raw or undercooked contaminated oysters may result in acute gastroenteritis. We investigated the occurrence of NoV GI and GII and microbial indicators of fecal contamination in oysters and harvesting water from areas along the Louisiana Gulf Coast. We developed a filtration and concentration method for the detection of NoV from oyster harvesting waters. Lastly, this body of work compares commonly used molecular techniques (RT-PCR) and a commercial enzyme …

Facts Are Stubborn Things: The Foundation Of Alfred Russel Wallace's Theories, 1823-1848, Sabrina Rae Cervantez
LSU Master's Theses
Alfred Russel Wallace, a Victorian naturalist, firmly believed that based on his own extensive research there were theories that could effectively provide a means of studying the natural world and improving society. Although he became a respected naturalist his interests in mesmerism, socialism, and spiritualism disconnected him from the mainstream scientific community. Following the tradition of early nineteenth-century naturalists, Wallace was self-trained and self-educated, traits that allowed him to study multiple fields of interests and conduct personal experimentations. In these formative years, he was influenced by British popular culture, interactions with the working class and the latest trends of intellectual …

Equipment For Dying: A Dramatistic Critique Of Heroism And The Crises Assaulting Returning Soldiers, Jonathan Mark Broussard
Equipment For Dying: A Dramatistic Critique Of Heroism And The Crises Assaulting Returning Soldiers, Jonathan Mark Broussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents a dramatistic critique of the various crises and challenges assaulting United States soldiers and the current U.S. construction of warrior heroism through the theoretical lens of “Equipment for Dying.” Equipment for Dying theorizes that each specific crisis or challenge faced is a contemporary incarnation of an archetypal challenged faced by all soldiers and the societies that send them to war. Therefore, the dramatic form of the myth of the heroic warrior provides models and guidelines for interpreting and responding to the “deaths” of the soldier: physical, psychological, or economic. As a theoretical frame, Equipment for Dying seeks …
Isolation And Identification Of Foodborne Pathogens And Spoilage Bacteria In Environmental And Food Samples, Myriam Evelyn Gutierrez Barberena
Isolation And Identification Of Foodborne Pathogens And Spoilage Bacteria In Environmental And Food Samples, Myriam Evelyn Gutierrez Barberena
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Escherichia coli O157:H7 has become an important problem for human health in the United States. Scientific studies indicate cattle herds as primary reservoirs of E. coli O157:H7. To diagnose this pathogen, proper isolation and identification methods are crucial. From five different culture media, CT-SMAC and CHROMagar™ O157 results analyzed simultaneously were the best option for an effective detection of environmental E. coli O157. Despite extensive research at feedlots and dairy farms, there is limited information available on the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 at cow/calf operations. From 28 small-scale cow/calf operations in the state of Louisiana, we observed an 8% …
Perceptions Of Criminality: An Experiment On Race, Class, And Gender Stereotypes, Patricia Davis
Perceptions Of Criminality: An Experiment On Race, Class, And Gender Stereotypes, Patricia Davis
LSU Master's Theses
The study of perceptions of criminality is significant in sociology due to its sociopolitical implications for our criminal justice system. Race, class, and gender disparities in this system influence prejudices in the American public, which in turn allows the perpetuation of inequality. Using an intersectional approach, this research seeks to interpret how race, class, and gender intersect to create and shape perceptions of criminality. Conducting an experiment on approximately 500 undergraduate students at a southern university during the Spring 2015 semester, subjects are shown a series of photographs and asked to select who, out of the individuals depicted, they believe …
An Integrated Approach To Ambrosia Beetle Management In Ornamental Tree Nurseries: Biology Of And Control Measures For Exotic Xyleborina, Christopher Werle
An Integrated Approach To Ambrosia Beetle Management In Ornamental Tree Nurseries: Biology Of And Control Measures For Exotic Xyleborina, Christopher Werle
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ambrosia beetles have been a challenge to profitable nursery production for decades, with management recommendations focused on population monitoring and properly-timed insecticidal applications. Beetles disperse from forests starting in early spring, but few studies have determined the extent of this flight period, or how far they will fly into a nursery. And while the use of semiochemicals by ambrosia beetles has been widely examined, their use of visual cues including colors represents another gap in our knowledge. In addition to these under-studied behavioral traits, the available chemical control measures for ambrosia beetles are not completely effective, and repeated applications become …
Biogeography And Population Genetics On Sulawesi, Indonesia: Unrecognized Diversity In The Shrew Crocidura Elongata, Ryan Andrew Eldridge
Biogeography And Population Genetics On Sulawesi, Indonesia: Unrecognized Diversity In The Shrew Crocidura Elongata, Ryan Andrew Eldridge
LSU Master's Theses
In view of its mountainous terrain, peninsular shape, and status as an agglomeration of formerly separate landmasses, the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, presents a fertile opportunity for examining biogeographical processes. Previous work on Sulawesi primates and amphibians suggested the existence of distinct areas of endemism (AoEs), but the relevance of these zones to a broader set of taxa has not been widely investigated, nor the reasons for their existence fully explored. Here, we use population genetic analyses of the endemic Sulawesi shrew, Crocidura elongata, to assess biogeographical partitioning according to the putative AoEs. We uncover significant cryptic diversity within C. …
Masculinity And Social Change: Exploring Generative Masculinity Development In Resident Assistant Men Through The Social Change Model Of Leadership Development, Joshua David Finch
Masculinity And Social Change: Exploring Generative Masculinity Development In Resident Assistant Men Through The Social Change Model Of Leadership Development, Joshua David Finch
LSU Master's Theses
In this study, men’s identity development among Resident Assistants (RAs) at Louisiana State University is investigated using a constructivist approach. Societal expectations of men tend to value hegemonic masculinity, which reinforces a drive for dominance, objectification, and high-risk behaviors (Edwards & Jones, 2009). Whereas, generative masculinity is characterized by a sense of responsibility, desire to give back, comfort with self, willingness to confront and break gender stereotypes, and the use of personal strengths to foster wellbeing (Badaszewski, 2014). Many characteristics of generative masculinity align with the Seven C’s of Social Change as described in the Social Change Model of Leadership …
Jockeying For Position: Horse Racing In New Orleans, 1865-1920, Matthew Saul Perreault
Jockeying For Position: Horse Racing In New Orleans, 1865-1920, Matthew Saul Perreault
LSU Master's Theses
From 1865 to 1920, Thoroughbred horse racing matured in Louisiana, developing into a national sport shaped by the processes of modernization, professionalization, and reform. Before the onset of the Civil War, the leaders of Southern thoroughbred horse racing came from the planter elite who used African-American slave horsemen in shows of “amateur” recreation. Combining upper-class recreation with lower and middle-class entertainment, horse racing was a performance of social power. The Civil War devastated the Louisiana turf, scattering horses and men – but sportsmen proposed that post-war racing would help the state recover. The once-independent New Orleans turf joined an interconnected …

Testing The Asset-Based Theory Of American Social Welfare: Does A Future-Orientation Mediate The Relationship Between Asset-Ownership And Financial Responsibility?, Louie Fletcher Bickham Iii
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The ownership of financial assets protects American households from experiencing the struggles of income poverty. The asset-based theory of American social welfare, which was conceptualized by Professor Michael Sherraden in 1991 and amended in 2001 by other scholars, posited that social welfare programs diminish the prevalence of poverty by enabling households to save funds to purchase assets. This theory has been scantly tested—especially among American households—despite a great amount of funds being invested into programs designed to help low-income American households to build assets. The only previous study that examined the intermediary role of future-orientations on the effect of asset-ownership …
