Special Care Units: Specialization In Long-Term Care, Marilynn Anne Schaus
Special Care Units: Specialization In Long-Term Care, Marilynn Anne Schaus
Theses
i99SThere were two purposes of this study. The first was to conduct a literature review of the research findings on special care units. These units are segregated areas of a nursing home specializing in the care of Alzheimer's and dementia related patients. The purpose of the research was to determine what constitutes a special care unit, what is "special'' about the units and the units effectiveness in the treatment of dementia patients.
The second purpose of the study was to compare existing special care units in the St. Louis Metropolitan area with the research findings. Eight nursing facilities with a …

Aging Archetypes In Latter Life: Mythic Characterizations Of Six Psychosocial Microstages, Bernadette Carol Randle
Aging Archetypes In Latter Life: Mythic Characterizations Of Six Psychosocial Microstages, Bernadette Carol Randle
Theses
The use of myth to examine and explain the human condition is axiomatic in most cultures and traditions. One reason is myth and folklore frequently provide illuminating metaphors for the universal life themes of human experience. In western culture, literature is one of the more powerful transmitters of attitudes toward aging and psychological issues that confront the aged (e.g., mental and emotional declension, human interaction with the environment., and the impact of the environment on the aging individual). The purpose of this research is to examine popular and classical literature for representative archetypes that correspond to the predictable life stages …

Attitudes Toward Older Adults Among African American And White Counseling Students, April Mckinnies
Theses
With the increased population growth of adults 65 and older, the present study set out to examine if there were attitudinal differences between African American and white future counselors, toward older adults. Respondents consisted of 37 graduate students enrolled in a counseling program who volunteered to complete the Aging Opinion Survey (AOS). The AOS was distributed to students in the classroom by the instructor. Overall, the findings indicated that there was no significant relationship in attitudes toward older adults and subjects' ethnic group.
Meeting The Spiritual Needs Of Older Adults: A Successful Presbyterian Model, Andrea Leihser Scandrett
Meeting The Spiritual Needs Of Older Adults: A Successful Presbyterian Model, Andrea Leihser Scandrett
Theses
This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the motivations for and benefits of church attendance in the aged population. A survey of the active older members of a particular church was conducted in conjunction with a review of previous research on related subjects. These methods revealed that the primary and secondary motivations for church attendance were to worship and to fellowship, respectively. It was also found that church attendance plays a major role in the adjustment of the aged. However, attendance and participation are sometimes inadvertently discouraged by youth-oriented clergy. Churches can greatly contribute to the satisfaction of both the …
The Normal Physiological Aspects Of Aging As They Relate To Nurse Aid Care, Michele Corinne Allen
The Normal Physiological Aspects Of Aging As They Relate To Nurse Aid Care, Michele Corinne Allen
Theses
The education of caregivers is essential to proper care. The retention of nurse aids in long-term care of the elderly can be enhanced by specific instruction in the physical aspects of aging as it relates to the required care. The educational level of nurse aids may not give them the perspective needed to interpret the changes they see taking place in the elderly. This paper provides some of that additional perspective.
Aging changes begin at the cellular level Cell tasks are specific and functional Aging effects changes in cell function and response with subsequent visible and experienced signs and symptoms …
The Significance Of Adult Day Care, Jacqueline Crittenden Tisdale
The Significance Of Adult Day Care, Jacqueline Crittenden Tisdale
Theses
This paper discusses the significance of adult day care. Adult day care services are greatly under-publicized. The need to recognize and promote this service is the focus of this paper. Adult day care provides an invaluable service to the elderly and caregivers of the elderly. The literature supports the importance, benefits, and justification of adult day care. Types of models and various services are described. Results of a survey conducted to determine strengths, concerns in management of programs, fees, etc., and activities observed at four adult day care centers are discussed.

Home health care is a rapidly growing field and is expanding to include more and more people in the United States. However, there are an alarming number of people who do not understand what home health care is and the services it provides.
With all the changes that might occur in the future concerning health care in the United States, it is important to recognize home health as a major and vital component within this system. Home health …
The Need For A Specialized Treatment Center For The Elderly Population In St. Charles County, Sandi Klein
The Need For A Specialized Treatment Center For The Elderly Population In St. Charles County, Sandi Klein
Theses
A most recent trend in the field of psychiatric health care has been to provide services for the elderly on highly specialized "geropsychiatric units" located within the confines of a general hospital and operated as a new component of the psychiatric treatment divisions.
Four local hospitals were surveyed regarding their in-patient mental health services for the elderly. The goal was to identify where geropsychiatric services were currently being offered and if their services were located on a special geropsychiatric unit, specific only to those patients over 65 years of age. Each hospital was surveyed as to the types of staff …

Attitudes Toward Counseling: A Study Of The Older Adult Population, Judith Reiter Tarkington
Attitudes Toward Counseling: A Study Of The Older Adult Population, Judith Reiter Tarkington
Theses
This study investigates the attitudes of older adults toward counseling and professional psychological help, a topic of growing importance as populations age and mental health needs evolve. Using the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ASPPH) scale, the research examined responses from 43 community-dwelling participants aged 51 to 84. The sample included 23 women and 20 men, with varying levels of previous counseling experience. The study sought to determine whether older adults generally hold favorable or unfavorable views of counseling and whether factors such as gender or prior counseling experience significantly affect these attitudes.
Results revealed that the group as …
A Correlation Study Of Locus Of Control And Depression In Individuals Experiencing Job Loss, Robert H. Ramsey Jr.
A Correlation Study Of Locus Of Control And Depression In Individuals Experiencing Job Loss, Robert H. Ramsey Jr.
Theses
This study examined the correlation between Levenson's Locus of Control (LLOC) scale and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in individuals experiencing job loss . The seventeen subjects studied were employees that chose not to relocate with the company, but rather stayed with the company until it had successfully relocated, and then began searching for their next employment opportunity. At the end of their contracted stay, the subjects completed a demographic questionnaire, the Levenson Locus of Control scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. The results for the most part confirmed previous research with regard to the positive relationship between LLOC Internality …

Weight Loss In Alzheimer's Disease: A Comparison Of Care Options, Linda Dyhouse Kaiser
Theses
The purpose of this culminating project is to examine the care of Alzheimer's disease patients residing in a special care unit with the care received by those residing with the general nursing home population. More specifically, it compared the weights of patients on a special care unit with the weights of patients housed with the general nursing home population.
According to demographic information, the fastest growing cohort of the population is the older-old. This data is of great significance to health care providers for it is the 80 and above age group that are prime candidates to develop Alzheimer's disease. …
Adding New Life To Years: A Senior Peer Exercise Program, Cynthia Lymm Pearl Nayer
Adding New Life To Years: A Senior Peer Exercise Program, Cynthia Lymm Pearl Nayer
Theses
The thesis "Adding New Life to Years: A Senior Peer Exercise Program" explores the development and impact of a peer-led exercise program aimed at improving physical, social, and emotional health among older adults. Recognizing the challenges associated with aging—such as decreased mobility, social isolation, and chronic health issues—the study focuses on engaging active seniors as volunteer leaders to conduct low-intensity exercise classes for frail elderly participants.
This program aims to foster mutual benefits: healthy senior volunteers experience enhanced self-worth, social engagement, and physical fitness, while the frail elderly improve in areas like blood pressure, mood, and perceived self-efficacy. Grounded in …
Voting Participation And The Very Old: A Cost / Benefit Analysis, Scott Randolph Jendusa
Voting Participation And The Very Old: A Cost / Benefit Analysis, Scott Randolph Jendusa
Theses
A cost/benefit analysis of the voting behavior of a purposive sample of citizens aged 76 to 94 reveals that disability limits turnout by increasing the effort needed to vote while the reasons to participate decrease due to the loss of social roles and relationships. Personal interviews were conducted with 16 poor, disabled , unmarried women to determine if the decline in voter turnout statistics that occurs in the mid-seventies indicates a lack of interest in voting by the advanced elderly or the inability to participate when so desired . The study expands upon the existing literature which implicitly accepts disability …

Strategic Planning: The Long And Short Of It, Linda Ann Flynn
Theses
This thesis will focus on corporate strategic planning, its stages and the impact that the planning process has on organizations.
Over the yea.rs corporate America has deemed it necessary that not-for-profit organizations should include time for planning in their management efforts. Research has shown that the management of any not-for-profit can be at best difficult. With the help of strategic planning, however, even not-for-profits can be better off in the future with time well spent today.
Time taken to understand the planning process and to follow the steps will help top management to solicit the commitment from both board members …
