Christian Premarital Training In The Local Church Setting: A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Symbis Model In Reducing Divorce And Producing Stable And Satisfying Martial Relationships, James Paul Marks

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The state of marriage in the United States of America and inside the four walls of the local church is alarming. Marriages are going by the wayside at record numbers which has lead to family breakdown, rise in child delinquency, increased numbers of cohabiting couples and confusion in the church. It is upon this backdrop that the SYMBIS premarital program at Hyland Heights Baptist Church was birthed. The fundamental goals of the program were to virtually eliminate divorce in the church body and to significantly reduce the amount of marital counseling brought by troubled couples. In order to accomplish these …

Instructional Management Profiles: The Relationship Between Teaching Styles, Grade Level Preferences, And Related Factors, Amy K. Mcnaughton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study explored the relationships between age level characteristics and complementary instructional management styles. The data gathered from published materials provided the information for the research survey questions on teaching styles and age level characteristics. The data gathered from teachers who are currently in the field provided the basis for determining there is a relationship between PreK-8 teachers’ instructional management profiles and their preferences for teaching either lower (PreK-3) or upper (4-8) elementary grade students. Together, published information and survey results indicated that: (1) different instructional methods are more developmentally appropriate for different ages of learners; (2) teachers have natural …

Effect Of Short Internships On Student Self-Concept, Toni S. Oakes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study investigated the effect of short internship on college students’ self-concept. The null hypothesis of this study is that there will be no significant difference in the total self concept, as measured by a standardized self-concept instrument, with college students who complete a course requiring a short internship and students who complete a course that does not have a short internship component. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: Second Edition was used to assess the self-concept of the participants. Higher education institutions have increased the requirement of service learning experiences and internships in their curriculums. There has been little research to …

Improving Instruction For Teacher Candidates In Classroom Management And Discipline Issues, Scott Watson, Michelle Goodwin, Beth E. Ackerman, Karen L. Parker

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effective teaching of classroom management and discipline skills remains a major challenge for teacher educators in the 21st century. In some ways, instruction and experience with these issues should be the priority for all education programs. Why is this? The answer is simple. If teachers cannot manage their own classroom and control their students, they cannot effectively teach. All of the subject matter knowledge that teachers expect to impart on their students is useless if their students cannot or do not listen and participate in learning activities. The major purpose for this presentation is to provide research-based suggestions on …

The Relationship Between Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jessica A. Talada Feb 2007

The Relationship Between Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jessica A. Talada

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Oral reading fluency and reading comprehension are identified as components in effectively gaining meaning from text. A reciprocal relationship exists between the two that allows one to comprehend more thoroughly as one reads more fluently. Additionally, as one reads more fluently, one’s ability to comprehend also improves. This is due to the fact that one’s brain is more capable in processing text meaning when one is able to read fluently. Therefore, when one automatically identifies words one is able to comprehend text more completely. The oral reading fluency and comprehension relationship was tested for a second and third grade population …

The Role Of Latinidad In The Worship And Formation Of Identity Of A U.S. Hispanic, Pentecostal Church, Kristina Arellano

Masters Theses

This case study examines how culture influenced the worship of one U.S. Hispanic church made up of thirteen different nationalities. I examined how Latinidad, a unified Latino identity, assisted in the construction of Iglesia Ebenezer’s collective identity enabling them to worship together despite their diversity. I observed several worship services and interviewed eleven participants during my fieldwork: three pastors, two youth leaders, and six worship-team musicians. I compared and contrasted case studies of the musicians to construct a collective identity of this small group. A final analysis compared my fieldwork observations and the perspectives of all eleven individuals to establish …

This thesis examined the six dance sequences in the film to determine if the dancing is an integral, powerful, and significant communicative addition to the film. Walter Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm was used in conjunction with Seymour Chatman’s concept of kernels and satellites to determine if the dances communicated significantly to the film’s viewers. Numerous studies have attempted to identify a relationship between personality traits and workplace performance. Workplace performance in this study was construed as including perceptions of congruence with the type of work and performance on the job. The Five-Factor Model (FFM) has been used to predict workplace performance across a number of vocations including aviation and the Revised NEO Personality Instrument (NEO-PI-R) is the most widely used FFM-based instrument. Proportional Process Conflict In Undergraduate Cooperative Learning Groups, Glenna K. Dunn

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The first purpose of this research was to determine if minimal training on the concepts and effects of relational, task, and process conflict would have an effect on proportional process conflict (Jehn, 2000) in undergraduate cooperative learning groups. Proportional process conflict is explained as the amount of process conflict in proportion to relational and task conflict and to the overall amount of conflict within the group. The second purpose was to increase knowledge about the cultural patterns and perspectives of undergraduate cooperative learning groups. The sample consisted of 68 undergraduate students from four classes of the same course at a …
