Dorothy Sayers On “The Lost Tools Of Learning”, Steven Alan Samson Jan 1993

Dorothy Sayers On “The Lost Tools Of Learning”, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The key to education is “learning how to learn.” We must first stand on the shoulders of the giants who preceded us before we can reach far enough to loose their embrace. A liberal arts education is to be liberating. But as Irving Babbitt noted, commenting on Edmund Burke, the basis of genuine liberty is an act of subordination or humility. We tend to mistake the part for the whole and exalt our partial discoveries into idols.

Thoughts, Feelings, And Actions: A Retrospective Study Of The Coping Efforts Of Pediatric Cancer Patients In The Context Of The Home, Institution, And Community, Deanna C. Britt Oct 1992

Thoughts, Feelings, And Actions: A Retrospective Study Of The Coping Efforts Of Pediatric Cancer Patients In The Context Of The Home, Institution, And Community, Deanna C. Britt

Faculty Dissertations

This study was a retrospective examination of the experiences of pediatric cancer patients and their families from a contextual perspective. The home, institution, and community contexts were investigated to reveal their influences on the coping efforts of the study participants. Ten families of children with cancer were interviewed, and data were analyzed qualitatively. Walker's (1985) family stress model and Lazarus' (1984) coping paradigm guided the study.

The findings indicated that children were ambivalent in their attitudes toward the disease process. While they did not enjoy painful procedures, sickness, frequent hospitalizations, and baldness, they did welcome the special attention brought about …

Factors That Motivate A Man To Become And Remain The Senior Pastor Of A Local Church, David John Leblanc Feb 1992

Factors That Motivate A Man To Become And Remain The Senior Pastor Of A Local Church, David John Leblanc

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project evolved from the question, "What motivates a man to become, and remain, a pastor?" The hypothesis was that a man, called of God into the ministry, would not be primarily motivated in his work by secular or external motivators and factors; but by internal or spiritual factors. An opinion poll of 125 Master of Divinity graduates of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary reflected the thesis and illustrated the problem. The author has concluded that a pastor should give attention to his spiritual development and constant reinforcement of the call of God in his life. The results of this project …

Counseling Hispanics: Cross Cultural And Christian Perspectives, Fernando L. Garzon, Siang-Yang Tan Jan 1992

Counseling Hispanics: Cross Cultural And Christian Perspectives, Fernando L. Garzon, Siang-Yang Tan

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cross-cultural and Christian factors are examined in working with Hispanics in therapy. Cross-cultural concerns involve language difficulties, acculturation assessment, family dynamics, gender issues, attitudes toward authority figures: and expectations in therapy. Christian mental health professionals are in a unique position to increase adequate mental health care to this underserved population. Sensitive treatment can reduce the resistance many Hispanic evangelicals have to psychotherapy. In addition, the training of paraprofessional counselors in Hispanic churches would enable many Hispanics to obtain therapy who could not otherwise afford it.

Frames, Brains, And Chinese Rooms: Problems In Artificial Intelligence, Jeffrey David Koperski Apr 1991

Frames, Brains, And Chinese Rooms: Problems In Artificial Intelligence, Jeffrey David Koperski

Masters Theses

Advocates of strong artificial intelligence believe that properly programmed computers can go beyond the simulation of intelligent acts so as to instantiate and exhibit true intelligence, that is, intelligence equivalent to that of man. In this thesis, I consider three problems for strong-AI.

First, John Searle's well-known thought experiment of the "Chinese Room" is used to reestablish the syntax-semantics distinction and to show how this distinction applies to computer programs. I review the Chinese Room, consider a variety of objections to it, and then expand on the key points in Searle's work.

Second, I examine the Frame Problem in artificial …
