The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller Apr 2007

The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller

Senior Honors Theses

The relationship between food consumed and the resulting body size is not easy to understand. Considering the vast array of nutritional input, numerous hypotheses have been tested for connections among diet constituents and the shape of the human body. The purpose of this study was two fold: to determine the correlation between the level of blood cholesterol and waist size among college students and to determine the correlation between blood pressure and waist size among college students. Volunteers from an upper level Kinesiology class at Liberty University were measured around the waist, screened for blood pressure, and administered a cholesterol …

Putting The Pieces Together: Examining The Division Between Christian And Secular Elements Of Muscular Christianity, Rodney D. Knudsen

Senior Honors Theses

Around the turn of the 20th century a movement called Muscular Christianity was extremely influential in The United States. Despite the name, there was a very strong secular aspect to this movement. A portion of this movement was dedicated to more closely uniting masculinity with the church and Christianity. This group consisted of various personalities and groups that supported a similar message for men and the church at large. The most apparent aspect of this was the Men and Religion Forward Movement of 1911-12. This was a major rally and marketing based movement of men in Christianity.

The many pieces …

Documentation Style As Rhetorical Device: A Comparative Analysis Of Two Bibliographic Systems, Gregory A. Smith Apr 2007

Documentation Style As Rhetorical Device: A Comparative Analysis Of Two Bibliographic Systems, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The documentation styles developed by the Modern Language Association and the American Psychological Association reflect divergent assumptions regarding the apprehension and communication of knowledge. Each system expresses its rhetorical character through the aims it articulates, the sources it values, and the formats it prescribes for in-text citations and bibliographic references. Like other scholarly writing conventions, documentation styles are not arbitrary, but both shape and are shaped by the discourse communities that they serve. Emerging scholars need to be acculturated purposively to the conventions of their respective communities, while authors should consciously select bibliographic systems that support their rhetorical aims.

Postpartum Depression Post Andrea Yates, Patricia R. Luca Apr 2007

Postpartum Depression Post Andrea Yates, Patricia R. Luca

Senior Honors Theses

Scientific research does not occur without influence from media and culture. Certainly, changes in funding decisions and publishing patterns are not immune to the influence of a single fantastic case. Andrea Yates' gruesome murder of her five children is just that type of case. The present paper focuses on the influence of that case on postpartum depression research in terms of both content and volume. The explosion of research on postpartum depression since Yates murdered her children is inarguable, the content of that research was organized into three areas: application of postpartum depression, mother-child relationship, and related constructs and discussed …

Accessory To Genocide? An Exploration Of America’S Response To The Holocaust, Amanda Jean Costa Apr 2007

Accessory To Genocide? An Exploration Of America’S Response To The Holocaust, Amanda Jean Costa

Senior Honors Theses

In considering America's reaction to the Holocaust, scholars must address serious charges that America bears some culpability for what happened. A survey of prominent historical studies and contemporary documents such as newspaper articles, committee reports, and other government documents prove America had some knowledge of the Holocaust, but did little in response. Considering the United States' knowledge of the situation in Germany, America's restrictive immigration policy in the 1930s makes her at least partially responsible for some of the lives lost. Other measures to stop the Holocaust, such as rescue, ransom, or bombing attempts, would not have been feasible or …

Events such as this ignited a political confrontation between the Buddhists and the South Vietnamese government. Although practicing Buddhists did not make up a majority of the population, they effectively enflamed the Vietnamese people against Ngo Dinh Diem, the president of South Vietnam, and captured the attention of the American news media by staging sacrificial suicides, hunger strikes, and street protests. The United States tried to convince Diem to make some concessions to the Buddhists, but their powers …

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an article published in the previous edition of EAP Digest, the Burnout Monster was introduced. This foreboding creature physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually terrorizes its prey through stressful employment or from being a caregiver. Employee assistance professionals are especially vulnerable due to the helping nature of our work, the changing economy, and legal decisions that jeopardize our job security. In spite of the danger, there is hope. The Burnout Monster is not indomitable; it can be avoided, and if attacked it is susceptible to offensive engagement.

Effect Of Short Internships On Student Self-Concept, Toni S. Oakes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study investigated the effect of short internship on college students’ self-concept. The null hypothesis of this study is that there will be no significant difference in the total self concept, as measured by a standardized self-concept instrument, with college students who complete a course requiring a short internship and students who complete a course that does not have a short internship component. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: Second Edition was used to assess the self-concept of the participants. Higher education institutions have increased the requirement of service learning experiences and internships in their curriculums. There has been little research to …

The state of marriage in the United States of America and inside the four walls of the local church is alarming. Marriages are going by the wayside at record numbers which has lead to family breakdown, rise in child delinquency, increased numbers of cohabiting couples and confusion in the church. It is upon this backdrop that the SYMBIS premarital program at Hyland Heights Baptist Church was birthed. The fundamental goals of the program were to virtually eliminate divorce in the church body and to significantly reduce the amount of marital counseling brought by troubled couples. In order to accomplish these …

The development of a theoretical brain-based online course design model with potential transferability across course management systems in higher education is the problem for this study. Qualitative inquiry was the emergent design and consisted of an extensive current, relevant literature review of educational literature in brain-based learning theory, online course design, and course management systems for the purpose of developing a theoretical brain-based online course design model for higher education. The model developed includes synthesized indicators from the analytical charting. The proposed model is presented in acronym form, which in and of itself aligns with brain-based learning theory. The acronym …

Improving Instruction For Teacher Candidates In Classroom Management And Discipline Issues, Scott Watson, Michelle Goodwin, Beth E. Ackerman, Karen L. Parker Feb 2007

Improving Instruction For Teacher Candidates In Classroom Management And Discipline Issues, Scott Watson, Michelle Goodwin, Beth E. Ackerman, Karen L. Parker

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effective teaching of classroom management and discipline skills remains a major challenge for teacher educators in the 21st century. In some ways, instruction and experience with these issues should be the priority for all education programs. Why is this? The answer is simple. If teachers cannot manage their own classroom and control their students, they cannot effectively teach. All of the subject matter knowledge that teachers expect to impart on their students is useless if their students cannot or do not listen and participate in learning activities. The major purpose for this presentation is to provide research-based suggestions on …

The Relationship Between Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jessica A. Talada Feb 2007

The Relationship Between Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jessica A. Talada

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Oral reading fluency and reading comprehension are identified as components in effectively gaining meaning from text. A reciprocal relationship exists between the two that allows one to comprehend more thoroughly as one reads more fluently. Additionally, as one reads more fluently, one’s ability to comprehend also improves. This is due to the fact that one’s brain is more capable in processing text meaning when one is able to read fluently. Therefore, when one automatically identifies words one is able to comprehend text more completely. The oral reading fluency and comprehension relationship was tested for a second and third grade population …
