A Model For Pastoral Care And Shepherding Of A Large And Growing Church, Aaron J. Rummage
A Model For Pastoral Care And Shepherding Of A Large And Growing Church, Aaron J. Rummage
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study addresses the challenges related to the care giving ministry of New Lire Church located in LaPlata, Maryland. This revitalized church has grown from 60 attendees in 1999 to over 1,100 by 2004. The growth has led to many challenges, including the development of a shepherding strategy that will meet the needs of the congregation. The leadership team sought to answer the question of an appropriate shepherding strategy through examining scriptures, reviewing the history of shepherding and evaluating current models of care giving used in large Wesleyan churches. Additionally, a survey of pastoral care methodology employed in large Wesleyan …
Lay Shepherding: Developing A Pastoral Care Ministry For The Small To Mid-Sized Church, Barry G. Lawson
Lay Shepherding: Developing A Pastoral Care Ministry For The Small To Mid-Sized Church, Barry G. Lawson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A survey of Wesleyan churches and a review of current literature reveals that most pastors are bearing the burden of pastoral care alone. Only a few churches are effectively equipping and empowering lay persons to help provide this needed and meaningful ministry within the body of Christ. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate biblically and historically that the laity are gifted for ministry and that they are called to the task of shepherding God's flock. Further, this project seeks to present a model for implementing a lay shepherding ministry in the small to mid-sized church.
Profitability In Heterogeneity: A Comparative Study, Ben Gutierrez
Profitability In Heterogeneity: A Comparative Study, Ben Gutierrez
Faculty Dissertations
This study relates Hambrick and Mason’s (1984) Proposition 21 of the Upper Echelons Theory (UET) to the texts of I and II Timothy. Proposition 21 of the UET states, “In turbulent environments, team heterogeneity will be positively associated with profitability” (p. 203). This study affirms the validity of this proposition within the heterogeneous leadership context of Paul and Timothy as seen in the turbulent environment described in I and II Timothy. After defining three key terms (heterogeneity, turbulent environment, profitability) of the UET, this study provides the definitions and rationale for translating these terms into a ministry context. This study …
An Integration Of Biblical Principles In Counseling: Psychology Filtered Through Scripture, Jennifer Marie Mccarron
An Integration Of Biblical Principles In Counseling: Psychology Filtered Through Scripture, Jennifer Marie Mccarron
Senior Honors Theses
Psychology is sometimes rejected altogether by evangelical Christians on the basis that it is a flawed discipline. Evangelicals are threatened by what they might call spirituality hiding behind the veil of science. But psychology must be viewed properly, as must theology, in order to interpret and apply its claims correctly. The Bible may be considered revealed truth, but it is not the only truth God has revealed to humans. The Bible is God's revelation to man in written form, and is reliable as long as it is interpreted and applied properly. God has also given man truth which is outside …

Healing Of Memories: Models, Research, Future Directions, Fernando L. Garzon, Lori Burkett
Healing Of Memories: Models, Research, Future Directions, Fernando L. Garzon, Lori Burkett
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article examines several of the more recent models of healing of memories (HM) as they are found in the clinical and pastoral care literature. A wide variety of approaches are present, including models from David Seamonds, Siang-Yang Tan, Leanne Payne, and Ed Smith (Theophostic Ministry). These models are compared and contrasted in terms of an intervention strategy. While few empirical studies on religious imagery interventions currently exist in the literature, available data has produced positive findings. Given these limited results, the need for specific research on HM techniques is advocated and an agenda for such research is proposed.

The Development Of Family Ministry For The Local Church, Daryl W. Pitts
The Development Of Family Ministry For The Local Church, Daryl W. Pitts
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
All social and cultural indications demonstrate that the American society is in desperate need. Divorce rates and addictions have multiplied both within and without the church. The local church is uniquely positioned to offer hope and healing, from a biblical perspective to those who have been beaten, bruised, and left beside the freeway of the New World Order. The local church also has the ability to provide preventative services so its members can avoid these life hazards. Based on surveys and research, this project presents a strategy to implement a comprehensive professional pastoral Christian counseling service for the local church.
A Strategy For The Use Of Ministry Action Teams In The Relocation Of A Church Of The Nazarene, Truman Daniel Casey
A Strategy For The Use Of Ministry Action Teams In The Relocation Of A Church Of The Nazarene, Truman Daniel Casey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
When Atlanta First Church of the Nazarene faced the task of relocating their current facilities to a location several miles away, the pastor and the leaders of the church searched for a strategy that would allow the church to relocate without greatly reducing the amount of time the pastor had available for pastoral care. The church also wanted to avoid an excessive increase in the level of stress for other participants in the project. Based upon (1) research of church management literature, (2) research of the Bible, (3) a survey of the people involved in the church relocation project, and …

Faculty Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to present the effectiveness of a pastoral evangelism methodology. John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, and John William Jones exemplified this methodology while ministering in the camps of the Army of Northern Virginia.
Chapter one explains the research parameters and introduces the historical epoch of Broadus's, Dickinson's, and Jones's army camp ministry. The revival occurred at the end of a transitional period in American revivalism. The chapter surveys sociological, theological, and denominational events in the period 1840-1861 which influenced the men's formation in ministry. This covers the period of the childhood of Broadus, Dickinson, …
Religion And Mental Health: What Are Virginia Minister's Perceptions Of Counseling And Psychology, Clay E. Peters, Ii
Religion And Mental Health: What Are Virginia Minister's Perceptions Of Counseling And Psychology, Clay E. Peters, Ii
Faculty Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to ascertain which, if any, variables would effect how a minister felt about counseling and psychology, and what impact this may have on the possibility that he or she would refer to secular counselors for those in their congregations who are having difficulties beyond the pastor's expertise. The study investigated this possibility by examining the following variables: age, pastoral experience, educational level, and the amount of psychology class credits that a minister had in training. In addition, it sought to determine what influence a minister's theological belief and his or her denomination had on …
The Sword Of The Spirit: Pentecostals And Political Power In Guatemala, Thomas Joseph Metallo
The Sword Of The Spirit: Pentecostals And Political Power In Guatemala, Thomas Joseph Metallo
Faculty Dissertations
Guatemala was predicted to become the first nation to become predominantly Protestant due to the tremendous growth of the Pentecostal church between 1960 and 1990. Historically, the Pentecostal church was very pietistic and did not involve itself in politics. However, the presidency of Efrain Rios Montt (1982-1983) and the election of Jorge Serrano Elias (1991-1993) reflect a change among Pentecostals with regard to political involvement. The Protestant church has moved from a marginalized minority to comprising almost twenty-five percent of the population. In the August, 1994 congressional elections, 20 of the 80 congressmen elected to office were evangelical Christians (25%). …
Developing An Effective Ministry With Mid Life Single Adults In A Mega Church, Charles Richard Hughes
Developing An Effective Ministry With Mid Life Single Adults In A Mega Church, Charles Richard Hughes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A review of current literature demonstrates that very little material is available to assist local churches with developing a targeted ministry with mid life single adults. The purpose of this project was to answer the basic research question of how an effective ministry with mid life single adults was developed in a mega church by answering six sub questions concerning demographic analysis, the need, a model, the membership, leadership and administration, forming a chain of variables for effective ministry. Based on an extensive questionnaire of the membership in 1991 and 1994 the project draws conclusions in this historical perspective case …
Seminary Student Spiritual Formation: Recommendations Based On A Review Of Scripture And A Survey Of Evangelical Seminaries, William E. Wegert
Seminary Student Spiritual Formation: Recommendations Based On A Review Of Scripture And A Survey Of Evangelical Seminaries, William E. Wegert
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Concern for the spiritual formation in ministerial training has grown in recent years, and reasons for this are discussed. The history of spiritual formation in pastoral training as well as relevant Scriptures are reviewed. Particular attention is given to Christ's earthly ministry as well as key biblical terms related to spiritual formation. Certain expectations based on the weight of Scripture are determined. Results of a spiritual formation survey sent to thirty-five evangelical seminaries and a self-study of the writer's own seminary are analyzed. This project makes recommendations for enhancing seminary spiritual formation efforts.
A Strategy For Ministry To Widows In The Local Church, Richard Watson Sadler
A Strategy For Ministry To Widows In The Local Church, Richard Watson Sadler
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In examining current literature, very little research has been done in the area of caring for widows in the local church. The biblical mandate, present social conditions, and the results from questionnaires sent to pastors and widows of Southern Baptist Churches of West Virginia validate the need to assist the church in developing and implementing a strategy in ministering to widows. Deacons, the servant-leaders, are the responsible agents for ministry to widows and the catalyst in getting others involved. This project is an instrument to awaken and equip God's people for the tremendous ministry privilege in serving widows.
The Institution Of An Equipping Ministry Utilizing Spiritual Gifts To Overcome The Pastor/Laity Dichotomy, Mark Alan Harris
The Institution Of An Equipping Ministry Utilizing Spiritual Gifts To Overcome The Pastor/Laity Dichotomy, Mark Alan Harris
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this project is to research and develop an equipping ministry based on the doctrine of the priesthood of the believer emphasizing spiritual gifts. A 27-item Lay Ministry Survey was completed by 99 men and women at four North Carolina churches. Findings indicate that 43 percent of the respondents believe ministry should be performed by professional pastors. Research reveals that the professional pastor and laity have received a call to serve God by spiritual gifts. The church's responsibility is to affirm the call of believers to serve God through their spiritual gifts.

Ministry To Families Of Handicapped Children, John Nickerson
Ministry To Families Of Handicapped Children, John Nickerson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Public attention has been drawn to the presence and needs of handicapped members of society. Little attention, however, has been given by the institutions of society, beginning with organized religion, to the families of the handicapped, the caregivers, and their special needs. This project is directed to the clergy and consists of two parts. The first is a seminar for clergy, to inform and sensitize them to said families. The second is a model forum with which the clergy will be equipped, in turn, to inform, sensitize, and prompt congregational members toward appropriate outreach in this specialized ministry.

Follow-Up: A Model For Bonding Young Believers To Christ And His Church Developed At Liberty Baptist Church, C. P. Tarkington
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Various conflicting concepts of discipleship and follow-up exist in churches and parachurch groups. This paper describes another understanding of follow-up and discipleship which the author has developed over time, while leading both parachurch and local church ministries.
In contrast to the view that discipleship is for only a few selected people, the author sees follow-up as a ministry offered to every convert. Follow-up is the ministry of mature Christians helping new or immature Christians to be bonded to Christ and His church where discipleship continues throughout his lifetime.
The author disagrees with the popular concept that discipleship is a ministry …
