Developmental Expression Patterns Of "Eyes Absent" Genes I, Ii, And Iii In Xenopus Laevis, Aaron Bishop Glass Apr 2004

Developmental Expression Patterns Of "Eyes Absent" Genes I, Ii, And Iii In Xenopus Laevis, Aaron Bishop Glass

Senior Honors Theses

The original eyes absent gene was first located in Drosophila (fruit fly) and its crucial role in embryological sensorial development has stimulated research which has been conducted on this family of genes in mouse, frog, chick and human. Dr. Martin Offield isolated Eya1, 2 and 3 in Xenopus laevis (African clawed frog) in Rob Grainger's lab at the University of Virginia (Personal communication). The present study was a follow up study using the process of in situ hybridization to record the expression patterns of these genes using embryos at various stages of development. After a staining procedure, embryos were photographed …

Issues Surrounding The Mp3 And Its Effects On Business, Jeffrey Christian Brown Apr 2004

Issues Surrounding The Mp3 And Its Effects On Business, Jeffrey Christian Brown

Senior Honors Theses

The mp3 is a rising issue in today's news. Through research and documentation of interviews, this thesis covers: what the mp3 is; issues surrounding its use; technology versus intellectual property; ethics involved in file swapping; past and current litigations involving the mp3; and possible solutions to the mp3 issue. The mp3 is a great technology that can be a boon to both music listeners and the recording industry alike, if both sides are willing to find a compromise that can balance fair use of technology versus the right to be compensated for intellectual property.

A Strategy For The Implementation Of Contemporary Worship In A Church Of The Nazarene, Paul Mabry Mar 2004

A Strategy For The Implementation Of Contemporary Worship In A Church Of The Nazarene, Paul Mabry

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A review of the current literature reveals much material on the topic of contemporary worship, but little that focuses on the practical steps for implementing contemporary worship in a local church. The purpose of this project is to develop a strategy for the implementation of contemporary worship. With the support of biblical and historical research, and the use of surveys sent to pastors and leaders in the Church of the Nazarene, a strategy was developed. This strategy is historically and biblically sound and helps to minimize the amount of conflict that is experienced in the implementation of contemporary worship.

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison Jan 2004

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Karl Barth is often misunderstood regarding his views of Scripture, hence we must survey his "ontology of Holy Scripture" and then discuss various misinterpretations of Barth's understanding of the nature of Scripture. Such men as David Mueller, Otto Weber, Arnold Come and T. F. Torrance and Evangelicals as C. Van Til, G. H. Clark, C. F. H. Henry and Bernard Ramm are shown to be deficient in their analysis of Barth's view of Scripture, especially as regards a bifurcation of the text and the Word of God.

Aluminum Maltolate-Induced Toxicity In Nt2 Cells Occurs Through Apoptosis And Includes Cytochrome C Release, David A. Dewitt, Kathleen J. S. Griffioen, Othman Ghribi, Nena Fox, John Savory Jan 2004

Aluminum Maltolate-Induced Toxicity In Nt2 Cells Occurs Through Apoptosis And Includes Cytochrome C Release, David A. Dewitt, Kathleen J. S. Griffioen, Othman Ghribi, Nena Fox, John Savory

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Aluminum (Al) compounds are neurotoxic and have been shown to induce experimental neurodegeneration although the mechanism of this effect is unclear. In order to study this neurotoxic effect of Al, we have developed an in vitro model system using Al maltolate and human NT2 cells. Al maltolate at 500 mM caused significant cell death with a 24-h incubation and this toxicity was even more evident after 48 h. Lower doses of Al maltolate were also effective, but required a longer incubation for cell death. Nuclear fragmentation suggestive of apoptosis was observed as early as three hours and increased substantially through …

Creative Preaching: How Multi-Sensory Preaching Connects The Word Of God To The Twenty-First Century Culture, Mark D. Cummins Jan 2004

Creative Preaching: How Multi-Sensory Preaching Connects The Word Of God To The Twenty-First Century Culture, Mark D. Cummins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to identify the benefits of creative preaching for the purpose of connecting the 21st century to the Word of God. The project will reveal the media reformation that brought about a cultural shift from hearing words to seeing words. By examining the scriptures, the reader will discover that creative preaching through multiple sensory inputs is not a new idea. Finally, research-based practical advice and transitional resources will be given to help today’s preachers creatively connect the Word of God with the 21st century.

The Tobacco-Related Behavioral Risks Of A Nationally Representative Sample Of Adolescents, Dolores W. Maney, Joseph J. Vasey, Beverly S. Mahoney, Sarah C. Gates, D. A. Higham-Gardill

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The study's purpose was to determine which factors were the strongest predictors of tobacco smoking behaviors among U.S. adolescents. The population included a nationally representative sample of 6,504 adolescents residing in the U.S. Data were collected in respondents 'homes using trained interviewers. Weighted population estimates showed that over half (55.6%) of adolescents had "ever tried smoking," nearly half of whom (48.2%) reported "regular smoking." Those whose closest friends smoked were twice as likely to "ever smoke " (OR = 2.24, p<.001), twice as likely to be a "regular smoker" (OK = 2.28, p <.OO1), and more likely (b = 5.15p <.OO1) to have smoked daily than those whose friends do not smoke. Results show the very strong influence of friendships on tobacco initiation and continuance among this national sample of adolescents. Recommendations for primary and secondary prevention are noted.

Integrating Doctrine And Expository Preaching: A Proposal And An Analysis For The Twenty-First Century, Joel Randall Breidenbaugh Dec 2003

Integrating Doctrine And Expository Preaching: A Proposal And An Analysis For The Twenty-First Century, Joel Randall Breidenbaugh

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation proposes and analyzes the integration of doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 traces the recent history of doctrinal preaching and expository preaching. Problems related to postmodernism, the New Homiletic, and the changes within contemporary evangelicalism also receive treatment.

Chapter 2 defines and blends the definitions of expository preaching and doctrinal preaching. These definitions form the basis for defining doctrinal expository preaching. Several doctrinal prerequisites of an expositor conclude this section.

Chapter 3 examines the biblical basis for doctrinal exposition. The semantic domain for preaching and the Bible's practitioners of doctrinal exposition support this basis. …

Born in Onondaga County, New York on September 24, 1827, Slocum initially followed a military tack, but later left the army to engage in law and business. When war broke out in 1861, he tendered his services to the government as colonel of the 27th New York regiment. He commanded these men at Bull Run, where he was wounded in the leg.
