Animal-Assisted Therapy: An Exploration Of The Utilization Of Animal-Assisted Therapy, Ashleigh R. Perry

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has been increasingly incorporated into professional counseling practice, yet limited research has examined the factors associated with counselors’ reported utilization of animal-assisted interventions (AAI). Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior-informed framework, this quantitative, nonexperimental correlational study examined whether subjective norms predicted counselors’ reported AAI utilization, with attitudes and perceived behavioral control included as covariates. Multicultural competence was examined first as an overall mediator and then through the parallel mediating pathways of multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe adult survivors of childhood interpersonal trauma's lived experiences with group narrative therapy in Texas. Three theories serve as the base for this study: Terr's childhood trauma theory, Vygotsky's social constructivism, and Fisher's narrative theory. Social constructivism informs the study by suggesting that group therapy fosters meaning making through shared narratives. Narrative theory informs this study with the concept participants of narrative group therapy can not only create, examine, and reauthor their stories but find connection with others and empowerment in sharing their stories. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the perceived resilience of creativity derived from childhood trauma for professional creatives employed in the Nashville music industry. The theories guiding this study were Masten’s resiliency theory and Vygotsky’s theory of creativity as they informed the literature on my topic by understanding the link early childhood, especially trauma, had on creativity and the link trauma had on resilience and the life courses of individuals. Self-compassion has been found to provide individuals with important tools for facing personal adversity and struggles. These strengths are increasingly beneficial to individuals faced with both internal and external criticism. Studies exploring these benefits for those in highly public and critiqued fields are limited. Pageantry has the ability to amplify such criticism, but research for the population is limited. College counseling centers struggle to accommodate the number of students seeking mental health services today. For the last decade, the leading problem among college students has been anxiety, including social anxiety. Studies indicate that group counseling is a practical solution to address these concerns. This mixed methods replication study explored the use of the Creative Exposure Intervention – Group Version (CEI-GV) with social anxiety. The CEI-GV is a brief, integrative approach that incorporates art with anchoring skills, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and mindfulness with self-compassion. DeBono’s Six Thinking Hats problem-solving technique was used in several online internship courses in order to facilitate case presentations by counselor trainees. The process and results of this method will be presented along with student testimony of their use of Six Hats during group supervision. Counselor educators will be introduced to this technique and will practice its implementation in order to support counselor interns as they think through each facet of case conceptualization.

Sex trafficking recruitment takes place through manipulation, exploitation, and coercion. Counselors must know who is vulnerable to recruitment, and how targets are selected.
