The Person Of Christ In John’S Gospel And Epistles, Daniel R. Mitchell May 1982

The Person Of Christ In John’S Gospel And Epistles, Daniel R. Mitchell

Faculty Dissertations

The working hypothesis of many contemporary New Testament researchers is that the documents with which they are working are the products of a lengthy and involved evolution. It began, of course, with the work and teachings of Jesus, but, the final arrangement and form, officially recognized as the Canon, did not take shape until well into the second century--far removed from the historical Jesus.

The hypothesis which this study seeks to test is as follows. The books of the New Testament are authentic artifacts of the Apostles' respective ministries. They were received, accordingly, by the first century church as inspired …

Skepticism: David Hume, Gary R. Habermas Jan 1981

Skepticism: David Hume, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The Enlightenment period was characterized by differing strains of intellectual thought, from which emerged the skeptical philosophy of David Hume (1711-1776). He held that many accepted philosophical and theological beliefs were devoid of epistemological proof and therefore could not be known with certainty to be true. His twofold attack against the inerrancy of Scripture consisted initially of denying the particular evidences in the form of miracles by holding to the superiority of man's experience for the laws of nature. Also, he further posited empirical standards of judgment against the Christian belief in the inspiration of Scripture as a whole. By …

Agnosticism: Kant, W. David Beck Jan 1981

Agnosticism: Kant, W. David Beck

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter identifies the results of Kant's philosophical system on the contemporary discussion concerning an inerrant revelation. Knowledge, for Kant, is possible only as the forms and categories of the mind organize the raw data of the senses. Beyond this phenomenal world, the mind can only postulate what must or ought to be. It cannot know what is. The first postulate of this practical reasoning is freedom. The individual is autonomous, knows the good, and is capable of willing and doing as he ought.

Within such an epistemological framework, revelation becomes unnecessary, useless, and unverifiable. Inerrancy is not only false …

Schubert Ogden On The Relationship Between Theology And Philosophy, W. David Beck Jan 1980

Schubert Ogden On The Relationship Between Theology And Philosophy, W. David Beck

Faculty Dissertations

In this dissertation I examine the proposals of Schubert Ogden in favor of the view that theology is an integral part of metaphysics. My construction of his sytem yields two arguments designed to demonstrate this view of the relationship between theology and philosophy. What is unique to Ogden's specific position is his use of an existentialist epistemology and anthropology derived from Heidegger and Bultmann as a basis for a process metaphysics influenced by Hartshorne and Whitehead.

Odgen's first argument involves the main components of his epistemology. I summarize it in the following propositions. (a) A proper theology conforms to two …
