To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation provides students of the New Testament and missions a biblical foundation for missions as revealed in the Gospel of Luke, and especially that foundation revealed in the parables found in this gospel. The study first examines the Gospel of Luke and the theme of universal missions found within it. Next, the history and theory of parable research and interpretation are examined. From this point the parables of the double and triple traditions are compared and contrasted in order to determine if Luke reveals his theme of universal missions in these parables.

Ultimately, this study focuses on an exegetical …

Religion And Mental Health: What Are Virginia Minister's Perceptions Of Counseling And Psychology, Clay E. Peters, Ii

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to ascertain which, if any, variables would effect how a minister felt about counseling and psychology, and what impact this may have on the possibility that he or she would refer to secular counselors for those in their congregations who are having difficulties beyond the pastor's expertise. The study investigated this possibility by examining the following variables: age, pastoral experience, educational level, and the amount of psychology class credits that a minister had in training. In addition, it sought to determine what influence a minister's theological belief and his or her denomination had on …

A Biblical Defense For The Financing Of Church Land And Building, Steven Douglas Suders May 1996

A Biblical Defense For The Financing Of Church Land And Building, Steven Douglas Suders

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A sampling of pastors, who are Liberty graduates, reveals a need for scriptural education concerning the financing of church land and buildings. The purpose of this dissertation is to illuminate the minister regarding the permissibility of taking out a loan to aid in acquiring property and facilities so that their ministries may grow. The project describes the contemporary philosophy of Larry Burkett who is opposed to churches obtaining loans. The thesis then refutes this erroneous claim and finally, provides information that may assist in the process of obtaining a church loan for the congregation that chooses to exercise this liberty.

The Role Of A New Testament Deacon: An Office To Hold Or A Ministry To Perform, Waylan Lawrence Payne, Jr. May 1996

The Role Of A New Testament Deacon: An Office To Hold Or A Ministry To Perform, Waylan Lawrence Payne, Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The function of deacons in many Southern Baptist churches is inconsistent with biblical principles, creating confusion at the local church level. This phenomenon is substantiated by information gathered from available literature, surveys, and personal interviews with professors, pastors and deacons. The purpose of this paper is to present a biblical and historical basis for the diaconate and to provide successful deacon ministries as positive role models. Two church offices are recognized--pastor/elder/overseer and deacon. Deacons are not elders or overseers. When they attempt to perform as such, administrating church business, they are functionally violating New Testament principle and practice.

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus Feb 1992

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The book of Joel presents a myriad of problems to the honest interpreter. For example, the inability to date firmly the book makes it exceedingly difficult to find an original meaning for the work. In addition, the failure of scholars to come to a consensus on the connection between the locust plague and the Day of Yahweh theme in the book exacerbates the interpretive problems further. This dissertation is an attempt to elucidate the meaning of the book of Joel by focusing on the Day of Yahweh and its subthemes in the book via the methodology of canonical criticism. Canonical …

A Definition Of The Title “Son Of God” In The Synoptic Gospels, Wayne A. Brindle May 1988

A Definition Of The Title “Son Of God” In The Synoptic Gospels, Wayne A. Brindle

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation aims to define the title "Son of God" as applied to Jesus Christ in the Synoptic Gospels.

In the Old Testament the term "son of God" was variously applied to angels, Israel, Israelites, Davidic kings, and possibly to the Messiah. In intertestamental Judaism the term was used mainly with reference to Israel and its righteous people, and is never specifically applied to the Messiah. In Hellenistic literature the title was sometimes given to pagan kings, emperors, and certain heroes. None of these occurrences can form the background for the Synoptic use of the title.

In the Synoptic Gospels …
