A Study Of Yom Kippur With Special Attention To The Hebrew Root K-Ph-R And Its Old Testament Occurrences, Micah Houck

Senior Honors Theses

Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement is a Jewish feast first given in Leviticus 16. While the concept of atonement in the Old Testament means, "to cover," this feast has not ceased in meaning. In fact, the Day of Atonement is relevant for today's society and is highly important for serious study by the biblical scholar as well as for personal devotion by any Christian. This feast reveals important details about the character of God as well as the nature of sin. It also is important because the New Testament itself makes a connection to the Day of Atonement …

Preaching In The 'Hear' And Now: Justification, Development, And Assessment Of 'Parabolic Engagement' Pedogogy In French-Speaking Missionary Settings, Daniel Sheard Feb 2005

Preaching In The 'Hear' And Now: Justification, Development, And Assessment Of 'Parabolic Engagement' Pedogogy In French-Speaking Missionary Settings, Daniel Sheard

Faculty Dissertations

This thesis argues the utility of ‘parabolic engagement’ method for preachers and listeners in the French Antillean context. The opening chapter defines key terms and clarifies how this imaged sermonic style addresses the listening habits of targeted audiences. It explains that figured delivery is often context-interpretive, involving a more personal, experiential decoding by the listener. Engagement technique increases auditor involvement and creates unique communicative rapport. The chapter points out that the entire experimental process validates the usefulness of the pedagogy. Part One addresses the theological rationale for ‘parabolic engagement’ method. Chapter Two reviews appropriate literature with respect to engagement. Chapter …

While "The literature on Judges is voluminous," one theme scarcely touched on in studies on this book is the role of the family. Women in Judges are often examined in relative isolation. These women need to be studied, however, not as stand-alone characters, but within the social context of their families. Also male characters in Judges should not be studied in isolation, but should be seen in the cultural setting as husbands, fathers, and leaders at various levels who are responsible to prepare the way for the future of Israel in successive generations.

A serious problem in Israel can be …

An Evaluation Of The Moody Bible Institute Ministry Based Partnership As A Ministry Training Tool, Danny Ray Cochran

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to determine the feasibility of churches partnering with theological institutions to offer college-level ministry training in the local church. The Ministry Based Partnership of Moody Bible Institute that was a ministry at Holly Creek Baptist Church for four years is used as the model for evaluation. Student questionnaires are used to evaluate the effectiveness of this program. The Biblical basis for an equipping ministry in the local church is examined. The effectiveness of distance learning programs is examined using literature from the field of education. Conclusions are developed using information from the previous processes.

Understanding The Glory Of God Through The Expository Preaching By Young Sun Park, Young Han Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to understand the glory of God through the expository preaching by Young Sun Park. The reason I write this thesis is that I was called and challenged to be a preacher and pastor by God, after listening to the sermon by my pastor, Young Sun Park.

What does it mean to bring Glory to God?

How can it be realized? God the Father took glory through the ministry and personality of His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. God receives glory by saving sinners and by our obedient living which can be demonstrated through worship …

Historical Perspectives Current Operation And Future Projections For Temple Baptist College, Layne Carter May 2004

Historical Perspectives Current Operation And Future Projections For Temple Baptist College, Layne Carter

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation study will propose to present the rich historical past of Temple Baptist College, as well as the current operations and future projections. The trend in current academia is to move away from biblical principles and established moral standards. Many Christian schools too, have succumbed to the pressure of the age. This dissertation was written not merely to record the history of Temple Baptist College (which was never done before) but also to provide standards and guidance to other small Christian institutions. The information recorded in this dissertation was collected after researching archived records and minutes of several Board …

An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light Apr 2004

An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Much of current evangelical pulpit ministry has veered away from the style and content demonstrated by Jesus in His preaching and teaching. The purpose of this project is to encourage pastoral preachers and teachers to prepare and practice their preaching and teaching according to the model provided by Jesus as revealed in the Gospels. Based on an examination of available literature concerning Jesus’ ministry as a communicator, and interviews with leading evangelical pastors, the project offers personal perspectives and practical advice concerning greater effectiveness in pastoral preaching and teaching by using Jesus as a model.

Developing A Measuring Instrument To Determine The Level Of Discipleship Commitment Attained By Individual Christians, Henry D. Styron Mar 2004

Developing A Measuring Instrument To Determine The Level Of Discipleship Commitment Attained By Individual Christians, Henry D. Styron

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The writer’s personal experience, consultations with clergy and laity, and a review of current literature reveal a lack of genuine discipleship in the modern church. The purpose of the project is to develop a usable Biblical model of a disciple, and to develop a measuring instrument by which conformity to this model may be determined in the lives of individual Christians. The project details the creation of the model and the instrument, and then documents the field testing of the instrument in various churches and other venues, with resulting evaluation and improvement to the instrument.

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas Jan 2004

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

During the last few decades, the subject of the historical Jesus has once again moved into the center of scholarly studies among New Testament historians, exegetes, and theologians. In stark contrast to the movements of the nineteenth and mid-twentieth century, which exhibited very different concerns, the chief focus of the third quest for the historical Jesus is the Jewish background, setting, and context for Jesus' life and teachings. In addition to Jesus' teachings, the social sciences have supplied much of the backdrop regarding Jesus' surroundings.

What Do You Mean “Truth Through Personality”? The Phillips Brooks Definition Of Preaching In Historical Context, Austin B. Tucker Jan 2004

What Do You Mean “Truth Through Personality”? The Phillips Brooks Definition Of Preaching In Historical Context, Austin B. Tucker

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Applying historical-grammatical hermeneutics to the Brooks definition of preaching as truth through personality helps us hear Brooks say that the sum of all truth is Christ. His truth does not stand in indifference to his person as some theologians insisted. By personality Brooks stressed not only the divine person of Christ but also the preacher” character. The contemporary usage of both words, the eight lectures in context, and the colorful history of the 1870” tell the story.
