Who Believes What? Clearing Up Confusion Over Intelligent Design And Young-Earth Creationism, Marcus R. Ross Jan 2005

Who Believes What? Clearing Up Confusion Over Intelligent Design And Young-Earth Creationism, Marcus R. Ross

Marcus R. Ross

The question of what differentiates young-Earth creationism (YEC) from Intelligent Design (ID) has resulted in inaccurate and confusing terminology, and hinders both understanding and dialogue. Though both YEC and ID groups have drawn distinctions between themselves, previous attempts to classify design-based positions on origins have been unable to adequately resolve their relationships. The Nested Hierarchy of Design, a multiple-character classification system, categorizes teleological positions according to the strength of claims regarding the reality, detectability, source, method, and timing of design, and results in an accurate and robust classification of numerous positions. This method avoids the philosophical and theological pitfalls of …

The Man Who Skied Down Everest, Steven Alan Samson May 1995

The Man Who Skied Down Everest, Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

The skier Miura challenges the inhospitable mountains in a pilgrimage of self-discovery. The ultimate challenge is what brings personality and spirit into the contest, where the artful words are peeled away so that a man may know the instant of exposure called insight. However imperfect the means or the results, we demand this confrontation with our selves.

Summer Reading For Hearty Souls, Steven Alan Samson

Each of these books stands as a reproach to our secularized educational system which fails to challenge either our minds or our hearts. Our growing ignorance of history and literature is severing the cultural lifeline of our civilization and orphaning our young people. As Zacharias (A Shattered Visage), Kuehnelt-Leddihn (Leftism Revisited), and Nickel (Mathematics: Is God Silent?) have shown, it is necessary to strip away the pretensions of our flight from God and begin a major facelift.

The Growth Of Home Schooling, Steven Alan Samson

We would do well to remember that a series of sixteenth century Reformations were launched with the aid of the fifteenth century printing press. We may be witnessing much the same today. The keynote in home schooling circles is a can-do attitude that seeks to instill the character that once built America and to raise a new generation to rebuild the shattered foundations of western civilization.

Resources—Politics And Resources For Economics, Steven Alan Samson

A distinctly Christian literature on politics and economics emerged in the post-war years and has multiplied during the past decade. A key role in this development was played by Dr. Howard Kershner, who launched the Christian Freedom Foundation in 1950 and edited Christian Economics during most of its 25 years of publication. Other outlets, not avowedly Christian but founded in the same decade, include The Freeman, National Review, and Intercollegiate Review. These excellent sources of political and economic commentary continue to have a place of importance in conservative circles.

Bicentennial Lecture: The Charter Of Our Liberty, Steven Alan Samson

If we wish to know what the founding generation meant by liberty, consult the election sermons and thanksgiving sermons of the day. The founders knew that “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17). They sought to live together as a Christian people according to Christ’s “perfect law of liberty” (Jas. 1:25). That is, “the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” (Gal. 5:1). This is what is written between the lines of the Constitution. The Bible is the charter of our liberty. It is the substance of our constitutional liberties.

Review: Bringing In The Sheaves By George Grant, Steven Alan Samson

Evangelical social scientists have typically sought to breathe life into the old social gospel by professing to operate from a biblical basis while remaining dependent on a secular liberalism that had earlier jettisoned any signs of its clerical origins. But despite their concern with “structural injustice,” they have formulated their recommendations in terms of the same unjust and coercive social structures that rob Peter to pay Paul while picking the pockets of both.

“The literature of humanism ranges over such superficially distinct ideologies as socialism, anarchism, evolutionism, vitalism, eugenics, behaviorism, progressive education, legal positivism, historicism, the human potential movement, globalism, religious syncretism, and occultism. The themes and variations of this literature are linked by a few leitmotifs, or “leading ideas.” In one way or another they parody Scripture and God’s promises.

My teachers often found it useful to keep me occupied with extra projects. I had a teacher in 2nd and 4th grade who brought things from Mexico and got me started studying Latin America. I began ordering booklets from Pemex, the OAS, and the Government Printing Office. In 4th grade, she gave me a corner of the classroom to keep information I gathered on Sputnik and which I shared with other students. At the end of sixth grade, I did a poster presentation at the Colorado Teachers Association meeting on the last days of the Belgian Congo. I enjoy intellectual …
