Blackstarting The North American Power Grid After A Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse (Emp) Event Or Major Solar Storm, Joshua Good May 2012

Blackstarting The North American Power Grid After A Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse (Emp) Event Or Major Solar Storm, Joshua Good

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The electric power grid is our most critical infrastructure. This key resource provides the energy required for all other infrastructures to function. In modern times, electricity has become necessary to sustain life. The power grid in the U.S. is a target for terrorists and is vulnerable to naturally-occurring events. Numerous assessments have been performed on the vulnerability of our national power grid to both manmade and natural events.1 Two significant wide-area threats against our power grid are solar storms and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attacks. Solar storms are naturally-occurring events that have the potential to create large-scale blackouts that could potentially …

Nationalism In Afghanistan: Colonial Knowledge, Education, Symbols, And The World Tour Of Amanullah Khan, 1901-1929, Jawan Shir May 2012

Nationalism In Afghanistan: Colonial Knowledge, Education, Symbols, And The World Tour Of Amanullah Khan, 1901-1929, Jawan Shir

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Nationalism in Afghanistan has not received attention from the scholars of the country despite its significance, at least locally. Using a post-modernist analysis of nationalism, this thesis will study nationalism in Afghanistan in the context of colonial knowledge, class, and cultural institutions between 1901 and 1929. Chapter one is about colonialism and its impact on nationalism in Afghanistan. In the nineteenth century, colonial activities constructed the political, epistemological, and territorial foundation of Afghan nation. Chapter two shows how previous studies of nationalism in Afghanistan have explained nationalism in the country. As the review of the previous studies of nationalism in …

"All I Could To Save Our State" Black Virginians' Participation In The Great War, Derick Stackpole May 2012

"All I Could To Save Our State" Black Virginians' Participation In The Great War, Derick Stackpole

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Historians have started to devote more attention to the drastic changes experienced by African Americans during the First World War. Recent works that have investigated blacks’ participation in the army and activism during the war have focused on broad national movements, without taking into account the regional and local differences found at the state level. Through investigation of the Virginia War History Commission questionnaires, black newspapers, and other sources, a more complex view of black experience in Virginia during the war emerges. The unique political and racial landscape of the state, labeled as the “Virginia Way,” meant blacks faced higher …

Capturing A Complex Moment: Pictorial Representations Of The Shenandoah Valley In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Angela Lee Walthall May 2012

Capturing A Complex Moment: Pictorial Representations Of The Shenandoah Valley In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Angela Lee Walthall

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis includes the work, research, and findings that culminated from a non-traditional project that revolved around the processing and analysis of the William Garber Photograph Collection, which is housed in Special Collections of Carrier Library at James Madison University. After processing the photograph collection according to standard archival practice, I analyzed the images to make conclusions about life in the Shenandoah Valley during the post-World War II era. As I delved further into the photographs, I became increasingly aware of three trends: rural modernization, the prevalence of white supremacy, and an emphasis on tourism in the region. Secondary work …

The results of the study were compared to records of the Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora (2012), which currently maps the distribution of vascular plants …

Advantages And Challenges Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Autonomy In The Postheroic Age, Nathan Richards Fields May 2012

Advantages And Challenges Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Autonomy In The Postheroic Age, Nathan Richards Fields

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Over the past decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have revolutionized how the U.S. engages elusive militants in low-intensity conflicts by allowing the U.S. to project continuous military power without risking combat casualties. While UAV usage promises additional tactical advantages in future conflicts, little agreement exists regarding a strategic vision for UAV research and development, necessary for the U.S. to allocate limited resources among UAV development programs that address national security objectives. The present research makes the case for a future UAV technology evolutionary path leading to fully autonomous intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)/strike UAV systems for the United States Air …

Somalia Famine: Terrorism And Landmines Hinder Aid, Cisr Journal Mar 2012

Somalia Famine: Terrorism And Landmines Hinder Aid, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Drought, rising food prices, famine and conflict have forced thousands of Somalis to flee to neighboring countries or become internally displaced. Aid agencies continue delivering food, but the ongoing conflict between al-Shabab and Somali government forces makes additional help difficult. The landmine threat further exacerbates the crisis, contributing to food insecurity, endangering refugees and threatening aid agencies trying to reach those in need.

Case Study: Ngo Staff Implement Educational Goals In Northside Richmond, Grace Leonard Jan 2012

Case Study: Ngo Staff Implement Educational Goals In Northside Richmond, Grace Leonard

VA Engage Journal

The Richmond non-profit organization, Kid's House, complements imperfect educational models with creative and flexible community-based programs. In Northern Richmond, children living in oppressed communities have diminished educational opportunities and outcomes. I use the term "oppressed" to describe these communities because it highlights various political, social, and economic power that has historically been exerted in the process of creating poverty. An NGO's staff is effective in reaching poor students and parents when they are attuned to local social processes. Kid's House teachers negotiate an uneasy existence as mediators between the spheres of structural bureaucracy and local poverty. This ethnographic study culminated …

School Readiness For Young Migrant Children: The Challenge And The Outlook, Smita Mathur Jan 2012

School Readiness For Young Migrant Children: The Challenge And The Outlook, Smita Mathur

Selected Works

There is evidence that children from families of migrant workers are among the most disadvantaged in term of early academic achievement. Yet there are insufficient resources allocated to research exploring the reasons that existing preschool programs are not effective in closing the gap between migrant children and other groups of children in the USA. There are some Head Start programs that migrant children have access to, but many of them offer simply care-giving functions and offer little opportunities for enrichment activities for children in preschool. This paper explores some of the barriers to engaging the preschool child effectively in educational …

My Community, Their Community Our Community: "Musings" On Development, Grace Leonard Jan 2012

My Community, Their Community Our Community: "Musings" On Development, Grace Leonard

VA Engage Journal

This reflection explores the collision of anthropology and civic engagement, a combination that has come to define my senior research. My fieldwork at educational NGOs in Northern Richmond and Northern Ghana caused me to question the local relevancy of NGO management strategies. How can white, middle class teachers appropriately improve educational outcomes for low-income black students in Richmond? Is compulsory education appropriate training for Ghanaian farmers? Academic theories criticize “development” for furthering power against the oppressed, while the qualitative work of NGOs is quantified to fit the needs of grant writers. I find policy can never prescribe perfectly. In order …

Mine-Action Challenges And Responses In Georgia, Emil M. Hasanov, Petri Nevalainen Oct 2011

Mine-Action Challenges And Responses In Georgia, Emil M. Hasanov, Petri Nevalainen

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Following an international conflict in 2008, Georgia faces a greater threat from landmines and explosive remnants of war than that posed by previous violence. In response to this threat, Georgia, with assistance provided by the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA) and the Government of Canada, created national bodies to coordinate and implement landmine and ERW clearance. This article documents Georgia’s past ERW, landmine and cluster-munitions contamination, as well as efforts to remove these threats.

Modifying Imsma Training: The Mine Action Information Management Qualification Scheme, Aurora Martinez, Daniel Eriksson Jul 2011

Modifying Imsma Training: The Mine Action Information Management Qualification Scheme, Aurora Martinez, Daniel Eriksson

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The Mine Action Information Management Qualification Scheme (MIQ) is a new training tool for the Information Management System for Mine Action. It was created in response to the Next Generation version of IMSMA, the newest version of the system. The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining eliminated the rigid and unnecessary parts of the training-system in order to make MIQ more user-friendly. The MIQ scheme is currently being incorporated into several countries’ information-management programs, but it could still use input as it is being refined and implemented.

Land Rights In Mine-Affected Countries, Jon Unruh, Gabrielle Chaizy, Sharmala Naidoo Jul 2011

Land Rights In Mine-Affected Countries, Jon Unruh, Gabrielle Chaizy, Sharmala Naidoo

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Land rights in conflict and post-conflict environments is an increasing area of concern within humanitarian and development communities. When conflicts end, land rights may be threatened, especially for women, subsistence farmers and other marginalized populations. Secure land rights are, therefore, a critical issue for humanitarian response, sustainable peace-building and longer-term economic recovery, particularly in countries where agriculture is key to livelihoods. While mine-action activities such as priority-setting, survey and clearance bring mine-action organizations into direct contact with land-rights issues, most tend to avoid these issues. This article looks at how mine-action organizations can better address land issues.

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson May 2011

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

During the late nineteenth century, the penetration of industrial capitalism into southern Appalachia fundamentally altered the region’s economy. Historians have thoroughly studied this period’s coal and timber industries, but little scholarly attention has been paid to the iron industry. Iron production also made great strides in both output and scale as railroads and mining increased demand for iron products. The growth of Birmingham’s iron and steel industry has dominated the studies of iron that have been done, but between the 1880s and 1920s the iron industry of southwest Virginia and east Tennessee also were thoroughly modernized. The consolidation of the …

Initiation Of A Framework For Closed-Loop, Integrated Design And Planning For The Simplest Of Building Types, Vernacular Stuctures, Vedad Hasanovic

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The purpose of this review is to promote a framework for the diversification of the built environment, where adequate human shelter can be more readily available. Shelter will be required as the effects of climate change impact more people around the world. The commonalities that are shared among these structures worldwide give reason, as to their importance, and as humans begin to familiarize themselves with descent culture; models for sustainable living that are found in nature. (Holmgren, 2002) Vernacular structures prove that it is possible to build safe, dependable and cost-effective shelter without negatively impacting the surrounding environment. These structures …

Teaching Music To Students With Multiple Disabilities: A Study Into Teachers' Perspectives And Practices For Self-Contained General Music Instruction, Angela D. Clemens May 2011

Teaching Music To Students With Multiple Disabilities: A Study Into Teachers' Perspectives And Practices For Self-Contained General Music Instruction, Angela D. Clemens

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study investigates the experience of elementary teachers providing music instruction to students with multiple disabilities in self-contained classrooms. With legislation mandating public education for students with special needs, music teachers increasingly encounter these students in their classrooms, which range from inclusion to self-contained environments. Research indicates that music is a valid and valuable tool for supporting extra-musical learning as well as fostering musical growth in students with special needs. Additionally, research provides insight into inclusion experiences for teachers and for students. However, research into self-contained instruction is minimal. This study addressed that gap through phenomenological exploration of teachers in …

Technology Assessment Of Hydrokinetic Energy: Run-Of-River And In-Stream Tidal Systems, Andréa René Badger May 2011

Technology Assessment Of Hydrokinetic Energy: Run-Of-River And In-Stream Tidal Systems, Andréa René Badger

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This is an assessment of the emerging technology of hydrokinetic energy, specifically for current-based systems in rivers, streams or canals. The over reliance on fossil fuels for our power and energy needs is not only environmentally detrimental, but also unsustainable. By exploring means of electric power that emerge from existing technology, society can become less dependent upon non-renewable resources and move towards self-sustaining practices. I will begin with a US electricity overview, and then transition into a discussion about hydropower and its shift to hydrokinetic energy technology. After comparing both turbine and non-turbine hydrokinetic energy systems, the thesis then delves …
