The challenges faced by student-athletes are a growing concern in todays society. Beyond heightened academic requirements, student-athletes face a multitude of tasks including weight training, practice, film review, and travel for competition. This makes the student life very complex. The evolution of sport and the factors that are influencing it, such as industry standards and external conditions, have challenged curricula in the area of sport. The number of sport administration/management programs has increased over the years to over 500 (North American Society for Sport Management, n.d.), which, in turn, has contributed to variation among higherEducation programs (Eagleman & McNary, 2010). Comparison Of Physical Activity Level And Health Behaviors Between Physical Education Majors And Other Health-Related Majors, Sarah Galparoli

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in eating behaviors, physical activity level, alcohol and recreational drugs consumption, cigarette and smokeless tobacco consumption, and sedentary behaviors between physical education (PE) majors and other health-related (HR) majors. Participants were students enrolled in randomly selected undergraduate classes that were required for their majors offered by the College ofNursing, Health and Human Services at a Midwestern university in the United States. A total of 292 students agreed to participate in the study and completed a survey instrument. Sixteen participants reported their majors as other than PE or HR and, therefore, …

Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess various aspects of athletic health care being provided to athletes in high risk sports in Indiana and the personnel providing this care relative to school enrollment size in comparison to the recent recommendations published by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) regarding appropriate medical care for secondary school-aged athletes. Design and Settings: Based on a literature review, a 34 item web based survey for athletic directors (ADs) and a 33 item web based survey for identified head coaches were developed and distributed to 406 Indiana High School ADs. This thesis uses content analysis, specifically thematic analysis, to investigate the message boards on Major League Baseball (MLB) teams' Web sites in order to 1) recognize in what ways sports teams' Internet message boards meet the unique gratifications of sports fans; and, 2) identify ways that sports PR practitioners can use Internet message boards for better (more gratifying) communication with sports fans. Thematic analysis of eight MLB teams' Web sites (the four with the highest winning percentages and the four with the lowest winning percentages) was conducted using Katz, Gurevitch, and Hass (1973) five gratifications categories and one additional "other" …
