Optimizing University Campuses For Learning, Wellbeing And Equity: An Applied Study Of Higher Education Facilities Organizational Systems, Melissa Nergard Jul 2021

Optimizing University Campuses For Learning, Wellbeing And Equity: An Applied Study Of Higher Education Facilities Organizational Systems, Melissa Nergard

Theses and Dissertations

College and university campuses are designed and maintained by experts in facilities management and planning. What is lacking in these processes is expertise in learning environments and creating spaces that are healthy and inclusive. University organizational structures aid in the autonomy of academic freedom and the nimbleness of research endeavors but hinder operational effectiveness of the campus as a learning and research environment. A more integrated approach, which optimizes the knowledge on campus regardless of where it is housed, can mitigate the unintended conflicts that develop through the disparate approach to learning, equity, and wellbeing in the built environment. From “Angelegenheit Großdeutschlands” To “Österreichische Abende”: Programming The 1945 Salzburg Festival, Rachel E. Scott Jun 2021

From “Angelegenheit Großdeutschlands” To “Österreichische Abende”: Programming The 1945 Salzburg Festival, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Österreichische Abende, or Austrian Evenings, were a series unique to the 1945 Salzburg Festival. These six solo recitals, five of which featured singers, highlighted Austrian musical culture by recruiting Austrian performers to perform Austrian music in an Austrian setting. For the first time since the Annexation in 1938, Salzburg Festival administrators had the opportunity, albeit with limited resources, to assert an identity separate from Germany. By leveraging available resources, collaborating strategically with occupiers, evoking nostalgia, and providing a sacred space, these small-scale recitals were integral to the first post-war season of the Salzburg Festival and its subsequent revival.

'Give Us More To See': A Feminist And Queer Look At Stephen Sondheim, Kevin P. Goffard Apr 2021

'Give Us More To See': A Feminist And Queer Look At Stephen Sondheim, Kevin P. Goffard

Theses and Dissertations

As our world begins to reopen following the closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many industries—including the theatre—will be left with starting to get back to a new normal. Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, theatre also faced another reckoning within the industry: despite often being a place of refuge for many marginalized groups, racism, discrimination, and harassment has been a common occurrence within the industry. As the theatre community looks forward, many are yearning for a more inclusive theatre community. As such, the theatre community will be tasked with an overarching question of: what will our new normal look like? …

Bewitching The Blame: The Crucible's Legacy Of Appropriation And Sexual Shame In Popular Culture, Hope Kristine Morris Apr 2021

Bewitching The Blame: The Crucible's Legacy Of Appropriation And Sexual Shame In Popular Culture, Hope Kristine Morris

Theses and Dissertations

In The Crucible Arthur Miller uses tropes of female characters, Abigail and Tituba, to tell a story of male heroism. In the process, he dismisses and appropriates the true stories of women who suffered during the Salem witch trials for his own political and personal gain. In this thesis, I argue that Miller’s appropriation and sexualization of women continues into contemporary popular culture depictions of the Salem witch trials including the movie adaptation of The Crucible and the television shows Salem and American Horror Story: Coven. These depictions appropriate and sexualize women’s stories in order to fulfill the male gaze. …
